Hi Mark and Techtons! I'm hearing the theme music on good speakers for the first time, it's like a whole different song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm Mark Hurst:

Hi geezerette & melinda! Happy ASCII holiday image.

Hello Technoggins!
Avatar 6:04pm geezerette:

Great nativity scene!
  6:04pm River:

Good evening and merry Xmas to all Woofmooers around the world from West Yorkshire, UK. Let 2019 be the year that things start to turn around and the darkness, cynicism and hopelessness of the past few years give way to optimism, hope, inclusivity and positive action.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Mark Hurst:

Hi Beast, Annie, TDK60 (happy Druid Wynter Ritual), & chresti & all Technoggins!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Mark Hurst:

@geezerette - yes, a timely nativity scene... But yes, @River, I'm also hopeful for 2019
Avatar 6:06pm TDK60:

Hiya River: where exactly in olde Yorkshire?
Avatar 6:07pm dale:

annie - i made a mince and apple pie. it's still warm. ya'll come have a slice.

Avatar 6:09pm geezerette:

River,cheers to that, beautifully put.
  6:09pm River:

@TDK60 I am visiting my grandmother in a village between Barnsley and Huddersfield, but hail from Leeds myself. You?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm ultradamno:

I saw that Joy Reid hosted a roundtable on her show yesterday on whether it was worthwhile to quit Facebook. The tone was slanted toward yes, so welcome to the party already, 24 hour newspeople.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm annie:

ooohhh, dale!!!! how cool! i can smell it from here, virtually..
Avatar 6:12pm TDK60:

River: I'm in the north end of the towne of Manhattan, *New* York.
  6:12pm Robert Tables:

Hello and Happy Everything!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Mark Hurst:

@ultradamno - so many high-profile people have publicly announced recently that they're leaving Facebook. Walt Mossberg, Cher, who else.. seems like about a dozen in the past week. In my opinion it's not a question of *should* we delete Facebook (of course we should) but whether people are in a position to do so (some can't, but many can)...
  6:14pm River:

@TDC70 I like NYC a lot, but I can't understand why y'all went with saying 'New York State' rather than 'New Yorkshire', which would be much more consistent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm listener james from westwood:

"And Mark said to the crowd, as his sleigh he did mount,
'Merry Christmas to all,
'Delete your Facebook account!'"
Avatar 6:15pm TDK60:

River, you have a point. There is a New Hampshire, so I hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm annie:

if i took myself off FB, i'd lose a small gig i have copy-ediing......and how would i play Words with Friends?.. aaahhh, third world problems
Avatar 6:16pm geezerette:

Listener James, clap-clap-clap!!! :)
Avatar 6:16pm coelacanth∅:

the xmas coel! :D

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm ultradamno:

Xerox needs single men?
Avatar 6:19pm herb.nyc:

Lovely music. I'm reminded of a song called "No L" by Jeffrey Lewis, about the upcoming no L train in NYC. But it's not techmology driven. -- related to Xerox, I miss the smell of the Gestetner machine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm listener james from westwood:

Holy toner, that was outstanding!
Avatar 6:21pm TDK60:

Victor Herbert?! Now, that's some "old school." There's a statue of V. H. in Central Park.
Avatar 6:21pm coelacanth∅:

  6:21pm River:

813! The Xerox Musical sadly never got the Broadway release its creators hoped for.
Avatar 6:23pm TDK60:

..those dancing snow people in the vid-graphic are scary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm ultradamno:

They look pissed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm listener james from westwood:

"They are not all accounted for, the lost seeing stones. We do not know who else may be watching." —Gandalf the Grey on Facebook Portal, probably
Avatar 6:28pm coelacanth∅:

my sister got 3 of those kits a few years ago - one for me, but i refused to do it.
  6:28pm River:

So if I want to do 23andMe, do it under a fake name. Got it.
Avatar 6:29pm TDK60:

..you Scrooge, coelacanth∅ … kidding.
Avatar 6:29pm Jeff Moore:

Most Techtons have probably already heard this (because really, who doesn't subscribe to and listen to every episode of the essential "Stay Tuned with Preet"?), but in case any of y'all missed it – the episode "Does Silicon Valley Have a Conscience? (with Kara Swisher)" seemed right in the Techtonic wheelhouse.

Apologies if it's already been mentioned ; I'm unable to listen live this evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm melinda:

I did 23andme for health reasons, after long consideration. My sister had already done it for ancestry purposes, so the cat was out of the bag. Or the horse had left the barn, whatever.
Avatar 6:30pm coelacanth∅:

i don't know how much proof of id. they required but when my sister bought them she had to tell them who each kit was for before they'd send them.
  6:33pm River:

@Coelacanth That's pretty screwed up. What the hell business is it of theirs? Hmph. I really want to do one, but not if it means essentially giving my DNA to the police.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm annie:

my son did one of them.....his grandfather beat him to it by compiling a complete family tree back to the mid 1600s... white as toast. i don't trust those tests mainly because there is no disclosure on how they can use the data. and consider the crispr technology.. nope.. not me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm listener james from westwood:

Go home, inflatable Santa, you're drunk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm melinda:

There's an article out there somewhere on how to do 23andme anonymously, but it seemed like a lot of work and I didn't like the prospect of explaining to people at work why I was having something shipped to me there under a fake name.
Avatar 6:35pm coelacanth∅:

TDK i think that's how the sister felt!
...i also unplug her amazon surveillance cylinder (whatever it's called) that her asshole husband gave her whenever i see it's plugged in again, which he's probably doing.
Avatar 6:37pm TDK60:

..sometimes you gotta put your foot down, even if you look like Scrooge to one and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm melinda:

@annie my sister has been doing genealogy for years and the test confirmed that we too are white as toast, except for 0.5% South Asian, which is interesting. But no big surprises, and their estimates for timelines were off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm melinda:

@coel I think surveillance cylinder is a good term.
Avatar 6:38pm coelacanth∅:

River yeah i'd like the information but not enough to do that.
  6:39pm River:

I can't imagine why anyone would want to put an always-on microphone in their living space. All companies are trustworthy, until they aren't. All governments are trustworthy, until they aren't.
  6:40pm River:

Everything is legal, until it isn't.
Avatar 6:40pm TDK60:

I've heard of Ellul, mentioned by others. Been reading Murray Bookchin's 'Ecology of Freedom,' critical of techne; he thinks the ancient Greeks integrated techne more socially, ethically than our current society.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm melinda:

Wait, toast isn't white...
Avatar 6:41pm geezerette:

Happy Holidays, Mark and every buddy!
I'm so glad you all exist. :D
Eyes needed elsewhere but leaving ears right here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm chresti:

Avatar 6:41pm coelacanth∅:

haha melinda that's what i was thinking
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm annie:

hey, you're right, melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm chresti:

Happy holidays geez!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm chresti:

raw toast?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm melinda:

@annie but you got your point across nonetheless! For I minute I thought i was being dim.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm melinda:

@chresti that's what I was picturing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm annie:

very few people know of the involvement between IBM and nazi germany..... i'll have to look that up to see its origins
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm chresti:

nowadays telemarketers are bots
Avatar 6:46pm JakeGould:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm annie:

Avatar 6:48pm JakeGould:

“Why don’t you stop playing games and act like a man.” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm chresti:

Oh man! I'm starting to worry about that guy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm annie:

a musician friend in jersey does this, too
Avatar 6:49pm TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Fuzzy:

Guy just wastes his time to own himself! LOL
Avatar 6:50pm tak:

Avatar 6:50pm JakeGould:

When I get telemarketing calls at work I just say, “Can you hang on a second? I need to put you on hold.” and then hang up on them. Works fine 90% of the time.
Avatar 6:51pm coelacanth∅:

the guy doesn't value his time very much
i would've hung up within a few seconds
Avatar 6:52pm tak:

i make them listen to dopesmoker
Avatar 6:53pm coelacanth∅:

tak, and for just that moment they like their jobs
Avatar 6:53pm JakeGould:

While I think your obsessing with deleting Facebook is naive, I still wish you a happy everything!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm melinda:

I almost hung up on a new sales rep who called at work because he sounded like a pre-recorded message to me. Good thing I didn't!
Avatar 6:55pm TDK60:

Roger Byrd McGuinn!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm melinda:

Thanks Mark!
Avatar 6:55pm dale:

i love the fb messages i get that say "to help us keep your account secure please add your phone number to your information." that makes me more secure how?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm chresti:

Why do you find it naive? @Jake
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm melinda:

@dale I'm suspicious of those too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm chresti:

@dale, yeah, same thought
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

♫ You Googled your stuff, they're checking you twice. ... www.bgr.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Mark, and may Santa delete your cookies (and milk) tonight!
Avatar 6:57pm coelacanth∅:

dale, right? google does that too. ...as if.
-they don't even have my real name. (or...they probably do; but i didn't give it to them)
Avatar 6:57pm JakeGould:

@chresti: Because the overarching issue is not a Facebook issue. The issue is big data, data collection and the ease of correlating data in the digital age. The laws haven’t caught up to this new tech, but Facebook, Google and Apple could stop collecting data right now and the issue still remains.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm chresti:

haha Ken
Avatar 6:59pm dale:

if you can get your asses to west orange and the edison museum (probably closed now for the -ahem - govt shutdown). see the room where all the edison cylinders and diamond discs were recorded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm chresti:

Ah, right@Jake
Avatar 7:02pm coelacanth∅:

i thought the edison museum was in edison. (where he supposedly invented the lightbulb)
Avatar 7:03pm coelacanth∅:

oh it's after 7
Thanks Mark! happy post saturnalia digestion to you and yours
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm chresti:

Thanks again , Mark!
Avatar 7:07pm dale:

museum is on main street in west orange, where his factory was. menlo park may be a museum but it's not where all the recording and manufacturing took place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46am Michael 98145:

Aloha from archive time. This season i've been horrified to discover how many have brought an Alexa device into their homes. And think that is -normal- ... what are we becoming?
