I always try to imagine what this record must have sounded like to people whose only frame of reference for something like this was "blues rock." As an old coworker of mine once said, "Just imagine all those bummed out hippies!"

Avatar 3:11pm PKNY:

I still think it's crazy that Sabbath played a Catholic High School gym in NJ in 1971. A flyer was on the cover of a Sabbath book, submitted by one of the guys in the Smithereens. Just trying to imaging the look on the faces of the clergy in the school with that young and likely high bunch coming through with the tri-tones.

I sold the Butthole Surfers acid in a bathroom at Bogart's in Cincinatti in 1987.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Fox (Rā-chul):

PKNY: My father was at that show. It was his highschool. But my Dad was into it, as a teenage bassplayer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm crateslinger:

before they went on stage.
Avatar 3:15pm PKNY:

@Honeybear - I just imagine some student-run entertainment club running the idea of having Sabbath play. Think this was before "Master of Reality" was recorded, so don't think they tried to pass the lyrics of "After Forever" to the nuns for review.
  3:15pm Zuki:

Bout time to hear the Butthole surfers again - back in the day they reigned supreme...
Avatar 3:16pm PKNY:

@Fox (Rā-chul) - awesome! Did he go to school at Union Catholic? I always wondered if there were pics of the band/show in the class yearbook.
Avatar 3:16pm Cheri Pi:

I was at that show @crateslinger! And I was most likely on acid

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm Fox (Rā-chul):

PKNY: Yup, Union Catholic. He wrote me a list of the bands he saw play at highschools (his and surrounding ones). Lemme find it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm crateslinger:

Yeah Cheri Pi. I think we know a lot of the same people - mostly no longer with us unfortunately.

RIP Williamm Berger. He was my friend too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm KRYPT:

Hello Fabio, I'm not usually working this late on a Thursday (I'm in Scotland) so this my first time listening to your show, but I have to say the Buttholes were just what I needed right there, hits the spot. Thank you sir.
Avatar 3:18pm PKNY:

@uuee - I know the Who played at SUNY New Paltz in the 60s, but didn't know they played high schools as well. My dad told me about seeing the Lovin Spoonful at Poughkeepsie High, and seeing a Vanilla Fudge show at a roadside bar that turned into a poolstick-aided bar fight.
Avatar 3:20pm PKNY:

@Fox - I only live a few miles from Union Catholic now, so that Sabbath show is of extra-interest to me now.
  3:20pm mischi:

Avatar 3:25pm Cheri Pi:

@Paps, there was one BS show where all I remember of it was a greenish yellow glow and I thought I had dreamt that I'd gone but confirmed later that I had. If that makes sense.
Avatar 3:25pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

It makes immaculate, perfect sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm coelacanth∅:

most of the wildest girls in 10th(?) grade came from union catholic and mount st. mary's schools, which only went up to 9th(?) grade.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:26pm Fox (Rā-chul):

Thank you for playing Uncle Wiggly, Fabio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm KRYPT:

@Rev. Turnip Druid, I have had such a trippy day at work (completely sober) that some previous Buttholes gigs seem like an herbal tea break :)
  3:27pm ERD:

My favorite Ungle Wiggly track. Thanks for this music. Bill was a really great guy.
Avatar 3:28pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

New Years Eve 1988, it was Dead Milkmen, Cramps, & Surfers with the full overlapping movies & everything. Gibby nearly burned the place down with his hi-hat fireballs. Building full of tripping lunatics; probably favorite night on earth.
  3:28pm Polyus:

Careful With That Failure, Fabio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:28pm coelacanth∅:

(...at least that's how i remember it; but maybe some of them went from mount st. mary's TO union catholic, and i knew them through the ones who spilled into public school.)
Avatar 3:29pm Chris from DC:

Holy crap, the Cramps *and* the Surfers...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm The Oscar:

I'm enough of a youngster that I didn't get to see the Buttholes until their reunion tour in '08, but even THAT was wild. They had to cut the gig short when Gibby threw a beer bottle at the sound guy and got escorted out by security, and the crowd went APESHIT. They were only momentarily quelled by a tattooed woman coming on stage and telling them to shush, and it wasn't until later that I realized it was Genesis P-Orridge.
Avatar 3:30pm Cheri Pi:

That sounds magical!
Avatar 3:30pm đ¢ ÞäŦ:

Dead Milkmen on same bill as BSurfers? That ain't right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30pm KRYPT:

@Rev, that sure sounds like a keeper, so many boxes ticked!
Avatar 3:31pm Cheri Pi:

Nice! I can picture Gen shusing them.

  3:36pm wfmu listener phillip:

im sorry he has passed away i loved his show. but maybe "dark night of the soul" with julie could come back i loved her show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm joe mulligan:

@Rev Turnip - yes, those were the best shows!! I saw the buttholes and dead milkmen many times in philly during those years. at club revival and one halloween at the chestnut cabaret
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm coelacanth∅:

Dum Dum, definitely?
-well it makes some sense. (though not that much)
  3:38pm wfmu listener phillip:

im hoping its Julie and dark night of the soul. OR! mary wings 100 percent whatever
  3:39pm ?:

Didn't William Berger's 80s show give us the term "lo fi" as a genre?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Dum Dum is the one. www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 3:39pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

joe m.: this one was at the Warner Theater in DC - a great old victorian-style theater: I recall the fireballs causing great concern amongst the security folks... and the scene of hallucinating human depravity at the t-shirt stand was total fear-and-loathing territory.
Avatar 3:42pm Megadano:

I got through so many tough deadlines for Rick&Morty with coffee and "my castle of quiet" as my only companions fueling my late nights. I'm supremely bummed that swell guy is gone. I remember distinctly that I storyboarded stupid Rick scenes while he was playing a "Mercyful Fate" block. I used to keep a pad of paper by my computer and write down music he recommended. His departure is a huge void. R.I.P.
  3:42pm ERD:

Sinistre! Digging real deep, love it. Also, politely, please realize that it's a big gauche to be discussing what shows might take over for My Castle of Quiet. It will no doubt be something great but just be patient.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm ɨkɛ:

Looks like Dum Dum is already listed on the schedule in that slot. :( {sob} His taste in metal is nowhere near as good as Wm.'s. For that matter, I bet Wm. would have been better at writing and soliciting poems about brutally slaughtering the baby Jesus, too, if he'd had any interest in such a thing. [pours out a 40 of whatever cheap crap Dum Dum is drinking lately]
  3:45pm Tony:

When I first started listening to WFMU, Fabio and The Hip Bone were on back to back Friday evenings. That was always an amazing block of radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm coelacanth∅:

yeh. i like Dumdum's humour and provocation; but his song selections usually suck. Martha would be a closer match to Wm....but then i don't think trying to replicate his programming is what's going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm joe mulligan:

@Rev - yes, that's how it went down in philly too - the flames were hitting the ceiling tiles so hard that they would spread a good 3 foot radius on the tiles. i still have a cowgirl t-shirt from one of those tours. so glad to hear you tell how it was in DC!
Avatar 3:45pm Honeybear:

sadness beyond words to hear of william's passing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm ɨkɛ:

The Hip Bone was SO GREAT. One of my first favorites on FMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm Fox (Rā-chul):

ike: William and he were friends. William was in one of his films, even. Why talk shit about people?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm coelacanth∅:

(...though i increasingly lament the gradual softening and mainstreamization of wfmu; and would like to remove some of the crap and bring back Sue P, Jeff Mullen, Martha, etc etc.....)
Avatar 3:48pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

  3:49pm nic:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm Fox (Rā-chul):

Megadano: You work on Rick & Morty? Do you know Doug E. O.?
  3:54pm V Priceless:

thanx for this, Fabio
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm ⓔⓘⓚ:

Oh, I didn't know Wm. was in one of his films. That's wild. Look, whenever I see Dum Dum, he and I always have fun talking shit at each other. (I mean, insofar as I can understand what he's trying to say.) No real offense intended. Except at the baby Jesus. Screw that little bastard.
Avatar 3:57pm northguineahills:

Loving the tribute. taking a break from digging a drainage culvert so my folk's place doesn't flood in the next storm. Still waiting for electricity at my place so I can go home 90 km away. Back to digging!
Avatar 3:59pm northguineahills:

and I'm beyond learning impaired to never noticed William was in Uncle Wiggly. He never played it on his show. I did really like Sinistre! Hope to find more of that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm (i)(k)EEE:

@NGH you're literally digging a ditch?! Holy shmow. Also, playing your own band on your own show at FMU is verboten, isn't it? (Unless it's FMA or royalty-free, perhaps?)
Avatar 4:04pm northguineahills:

Ike, I had a bad experience w/ Dum Dum. about 14 years ago, my band was to play at WFMU, but the marathon was going on, so all of the equipment from studio B was gone, and studio A was bare bones, so, we played w/ the dj w/ no studio engineers. Everything went wrong, and we barely got a set off before the end of the time slot w/ 10 minutes to spare. We were breaking down our equipment and Dum Dum came in and ordered us out as he needed to get into character. (We would have been out before midnight, but his manner hit us the wrong way. That said, I have no ill feelings towards him).
Avatar 4:05pm northguineahills:

Avatar 4:14pm Cheri Pi:

Culvert is a nice woody sounding word
Avatar 4:18pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

...it's still a distant 2nd place to "tarpaulin."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm crateslinger:

"Culvert" sort of folds over itself, like a carpet rolling down a hill. You think it's over, but it's not. There's more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm coelacanth∅:

hahaha! while imagining that i imagined myself wrapped inside the carpet.
Avatar 4:22pm Cheri Pi:

Imagining myself sliding down the escarpment on my nanna's old tarpaulin, hoping to find some of that leftover beer we stashed in the culvert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm crateslinger:

haha! Have you ever been wrapped in a carpet? It's very hard to get out of.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm crateslinger:

I suppose "rolled up" would be more like it, not "wrapped", but either way, it sucks.
