Sight unseen , it seems like they are going for ‘A-list’ actors for an ‘art film’ to play it safe. Both are arbitrary terms anyway and so long as it tells a good story, I guess I’m cool with it.

Oh, there's no playing it safe with this movie. Aronofsky is basically out in the parking lot doing donuts with his middle fingers out the window here.

It's a whole new level of over the top, even for him. I can't say I really "liked" it, though I have developed kind of a grudging admiration for its gaudiness in the week since I saw it. I can't really explain. . .

The thing about Darren Aronofsky is he has great ideas and skills, but in the end it is always suffocating negativity. I liked it with “Pi” and “Requiem for a Dream.” But once he got past that it was just misery schtick.

I haven't seen "Mother!" but it got an "F" Cinemascore grade from audiences, which is virtually unheard-of. Cinemascore is usually very lenient. Super-shitty movies usually get a B-minus at worst. Of course it doesn't help that it's been mis-marketed as a horror movie.

I forgot to add that horror movie audiences are the only audiences that rate movies harshly in Cinemascore, so maybe that "F" isn't that surprising, since it was marketed to them.
