The sway is underway. Good to be on the train.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02pm JtotheK:

hi Duane and passengers of his train.
Avatar 12:03pm Jshatan:

Punch my ticket! Sure to be a FAB ride, if you know what I mean...
  12:03pm Cecile:

Hi and bye! Getting my Internet fixed finally.
Avatar 12:06pm Duane:

Hi Cecile..bye Cecile..see ya in the arcives:) Hi Jeremy, and all the rest of tha gang!! Should be a FAB show indeed!!
Avatar 12:07pm Jshatan:

Betty! I've been dying to hear this.
  12:07pm Ari:

Super start. That Caston & Majors album got shamefully neglected by Motown. As for Betty, I've been curious about this release. Cool to hear her in her formative stages (you should drop some of that prime era live stuff of hers some day soon!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm chris:

hi, Duane, Train Gang! I'm hangin out.
  12:08pm Eli:

Duane AND Fab? Not missing this. Much love to you both.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm JtotheK:

hadn't heard this buddy cantrell, pretty great!
  12:14pm Cecile:

What time if FF Freddy on? Maybe they'll be done.
Avatar 12:14pm βrian:

"Your aura sounds like a growly sax riff." she whispered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm sweeks:

Kick ass start to my day
Avatar 12:17pm pierre:

Hello, hello Duane and duaniacs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Kat in Chicago:

I got on the train late. What is this Fab of which you speak?
Avatar 12:23pm Duane:

Hello Kat, Pierre. Fab 5 Freddy will be my special guest today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Kat in Chicago:

Wow, really?! Very cool.
  12:35pm robyn:

It's only Wednesday? Lord help us...
Avatar 12:37pm JakeGould:

Fab 5 Freddy! Yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Kat in Chicago:

Kai Alce's Detroit but any city would be proud to claim him
  12:44pm robyn:

Dang have to catch she's always in my hair in the archives. One of my fav prince songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Carmichael:

Aloha Duane and others. I'm bbq'ing at work today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm chris:

Fab's bio on his website is a good read: fab5freddy.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm chris:

aloha, Carmichael!
Avatar 12:54pm Eli:

that was fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Carmichael:

Heya Chris!
  1:00pm Ari:

This Bobby Caldwell cover sounds very natural. The reggae rhythm was always implied, but just smoothed out with the West Coast production. Cool piece.
Avatar 1:05pm Eli:

Killer jams, the train is roaring down the tracks!
  1:06pm Ari:

Don't wanna monopolize the board, but ACE Joan Armatrading track! She is sooooo underrated...
  1:09pm Polyus:

For those of you who never thought you would hear copulate and co-operate rhymed in a song. . .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Michael 98145:

a match made in heaven
Avatar 1:23pm Cheri Pi:

I'm psyched for F5F!
Avatar 1:24pm βrian:

Sounds like a sunscreen rating.
Avatar 1:25pm slugluv1313:

love them, they are phenomenal (& *not* just b/c they have a song named "Kathy," hah!)
i sure wish they were more universally well-known -- THANK YOU, Duane!
Avatar 1:27pm Cheri Pi:

we need sunscreen to be in Fab's presence
  1:33pm el BO-Bo:

Maaaan, how I miss this music. Why isnt anybody making this type of groove anymore? Why can't my Newyo Rican brothers make more soul recordé like in the 60's n 70's? Any theories Duane? Great show as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Michael 98145:

what el BO-Bo said
Avatar 1:36pm Duane:

hmmm...we can ask Fab maybe and discuss..i have a few theories though!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm sweeks:

groovy, baby
  1:40pm Ari:

You really got those "rubber band" basses bopping today! This Starpoint track is more than a little Steve Arrington reminiscent, no?
  1:40pm el BO-Bo:

Yeah. Id b interested if he has any opinion on that. I can say that I was heavily into soul/disco until I started breakdancing in 80. After that hip-hop and now? Anythings good. I've missed it so though. This show is the s**t; so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Kat in Chicago:

"makes me wanna... I ain't gonna say that, haha" (priceless)
Avatar 1:41pm Jshatan:

I wonder if that is a certain Brother Johnson on the bass on this track. Virtuosic!
Avatar 1:46pm Eli:

Bringing back memories of the classic french house jam by Cheek. Played that until it wore out in the '90s!
Avatar 1:47pm Perpetually New Listener:

I refilled the crown incense dispenser
for my dashboard
  1:48pm el BO-Bo:

I think maybe with the demise of shows like Soul Train and Dance Fever, soul had nowhere else to go so it went down down down and it didnt come back up.
Avatar 1:49pm Perpetually New Listener:

what about some Funkadelic ???
Avatar 1:52pm Jshatan:

If you want to know my theory...African-American music has always been about constant innovation. Just when you get a bead on rock & roll, we go to soul...figure that out, then get to funk. Got funky? How about some disco. Then hip hop. Hip hop goes suburban, dig our New Jack R&B. And on and on...always one step ahead. No time for nostalgia. Just a theory...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm Kat in Chicago:

I do miss soul.
  1:55pm el BO-Bo:

U.Penn in da hauss. Yeah.
  1:57pm el BO-Bo:

Right on Jshatan but, with nostalgia selling so well don't you think a musician may cash in while making beautiful music. What about Leon Bridges? He's old school thru n thru.
  1:58pm el BO-Bo:

MC Solaar RULES!!! See, I'm olde but this track is celestial
  1:58pm Ari:

Always liked MC Solaar's smooth flow. First two albums are ace!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm Michael 98145:

pass the Cohibas
Avatar 2:01pm Jshatan:

Yes, el BO-Bo - there is currently a nostalgia thing happening - "Brand New You're Retro" - but I don't find it very exciting. I'd rather have everyone know every great OV Wright or Syl Johnson song before we get new folks retreading soul. Just my opinion, of course.
  2:08pm Jeffy Jazz:

D-Train!!! What a great ride, as always!
Avatar 2:14pm Monica:

yo, duane and freddy! got any "change the beat" waiting in the wings?
  2:16pm nickrhombi:

i heard 'nouveau western' at a place called 'the palmyra tea room' in bound brook nj. - got eiped out in the flood of 2000.
  2:19pm Jeffy Jazz:

B-Side! Cairo Nights....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Kat in Chicago:

That's the best, when someone at the record store "gets" you. Maybe not the best for your wallet but the best every other way :)
  2:26pm SeanG:

hit the vape!
Avatar 2:27pm Eli:

Avatar 2:39pm Monica:

"this stuff is really fresh!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Michael 98145:

sounding good downstream
  2:40pm Ari:

Considering how post-punk this vibes, it might be interesting to learn Freddy's take on the rich poly-cultural ferment of the historical Downtown scene: what enabled it, how those times/conditions differ from today, how find that kind of fruitfulness in today's different environment...
Avatar 2:41pm Jshatan:

Good stuff!
  2:44pm Cecile:

Is he still there? My wi-fi is fixed!
  2:45pm Cecile:

Ari, I know a big one - cheap rent.
  2:49pm Ari:

Good point, Cecile. I guess the implication is that the next place to pull together a rich, poly-cultural scene will be someplace more off the radar than NYC, right? Or, might it be that, without the media amplification NYC provides, that hypothetical off-radar scene might never really break wide open?
Avatar 2:52pm Mochi Pierre:

I think Will Hermes' book, "Love Goes To A Building On Fire", does a very good job detailing how hip hop, punk, salsa, and art world scenes all met up and influenced each other.
  2:52pm Cecile:

Hello, Freddy!
  2:54pm Jeffy Jazz:

Great talk guys! I'll have to catch the rest on archived. Thanks, D-Train and Fab 5!
Avatar 2:55pm kumar:

Oh man, this interview is so awesome. I thought I could do some work in the background but that's not happening :)
Avatar 2:57pm Wild Neil:

@Ari and Cecile-Organism back in 1994 in Williambsburg, Brooklyn (an art happening/rave) was NOT advertised in the Village Voice to avoid the "bridge and tunnel" set from suburban NJ from colonizing the scene....I agree "scenes" should ferment for awhile so that they can get tasty...something hard to do in this novelty-seeking hyper twitterized world we now live in. This guy made a good point! Vex Ruffin that is....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Mick:

Amazing interview. I'm with Kumar in terms of work having to *stop* while this is going on!
Avatar 2:59pm kumar:

not posting early work to instagram is key advice
Avatar 2:59pm 173:

Thanks Duane & Fab!
Avatar 3:00pm alanr:

that was super nice!!!
Avatar 3:01pm Monica:

awesome interview, duane! 2 of my faves together. great stuff discussed.
Avatar 3:04pm Cecile:

Thank you Duane and Freddy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm Kat in Chicago:

Super show!
