Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08am Guido from Cologne:

Good morning Bill.
I think I will listen to the largest part of the show sitting on my bike and enjoying the sun.
German Telecom can be grateful to WFMU, since I want to enjoy some freeform outdoors. Otherwise no need for an LTE tariff.

Hi P-90!
  3:09am Officer Pupp:

Morning Bill
This Brigitte Fontaine track is great.

@Stanley you're throwing me off!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:20am Stanley:

Sorry guys, I have no idea what I'm doing up at this hour. Might as well listen to the music.

That's exactly what I was going to say.

Hiya,Bill Mac, and hello all from farther up the Eastern Seaboard of North America where it's UTC-4 and inky black night, natch.

The look would be all wrong - a hippie joining the mainstream
Avatar 3:35am Brian in UK:

The only rule is, 'There are no rules'.

The Loan Arranger would be the capitalist balance against the hippie 'belief' system.
  3:35am Officer Pupp:

This sounds like a Paul McCartney White Album outtake.
Avatar 3:37am Bill Mac:

That and a bar of soap.

This is Mojos follow-up to weird albums. The readers choice.
Avatar 3:45am Bill Mac:

I think I'm going to like that list - but how do you play Metal Machine Music and keep people from tuning out in droves?
Avatar 3:45am Brian in UK:

Nice one, Bill, there are no rules or playlists.

I read your show title as Onions on first glance.
Avatar 3:45am Bill Mac:

Right on Guido, and a little Frank to boot

Group 1850 is the Most of Nederbeat-Psych!
I'd recommend the CD-version with all the singles which are even better!

"Comme a la Radio"-Re-Issue : internal WFMU heavy rotation hit! ;-)
Avatar 3:56am Brian in UK:

No 'California '99' in either list. My favourite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56am Stanley:

I have some of those albums. Never thought they were weird, just enjoyable. I suppose outside WFMUland there's a lot of stuff that the regular folks find weird.
  3:57am P-90:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58am Stanley:

Those who might wear tennis shoes or the occasional python boot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00am Guido from Cologne:

Other WFMU heavy rotation hit and listener's favorite.
Awesome album!
Allready on the "albums of the year list".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01am Guido from Cologne:

She actually sings "lost in Mexico" (according to the lyric sheet).
Avatar 4:01am Bill Mac:

I know whatcha mean Stanley. The unusual is just appealing round these parts.
my python boot is too tight
I couldn't get it off last night
A week went by, an' now it's July
I finally got it off
An' my girl-friend cry
"You got STINK FOOT!
STINK FOOT, darlin'
Your STINK FOOT puts a hurtin' on my nose!
Avatar 4:01am Brian in UK:

Stanley, lists are divisive little toads of the fourth estate coming from dullard journalists with no imagination or talent.
Did I just write that?
Avatar 4:02am Sem Chumbo:

Automatic writing can be a bitch, Brian/UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02am Fran:

Morning all. Just caught Bill's reference to Jack White doing a play on someone elses' phrase. Made me laugh as he is calling the Black Keys for ripping off his ripped off sound....
Avatar 4:03am Brian in UK:

The other Stinkfoot, Bill.
Avatar 4:04am Bill Mac:

I just saw that! I always thought he was a direct descendant of Jon Spencers' Blues Explosion. Talk about someone that didn't truly get his just desserts
Avatar 4:05am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05am Fran:

As for Metal Machine Music you play it for people when you want them to have no choice e.g. its that or the Eurovision Song Contest and it is 6ft deep snow outside! Or you could play the Zeitkratzer 'classical' version which hurts....just differently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06am Fran:

Now if the Black Keys released their next lp housed in a teak cupboard......
Avatar 4:07am Brian in UK:

Fran Joe McGasko played some a few weeks ago.
Avatar 4:08am Brian in UK:

Everyone loves the Black Keys they are the greatest duo since the White Stripes.
Did I write that?
Avatar 4:09am Brian in UK:

Sorry I meant Nina & Frederick (the dope smuggler) or was it Esther & Abi Ofharim, back to Eurovision.
Avatar 4:11am Bill Mac:

They're not bad. I got one of the tunes from their last CD on regular ipod rotation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11am Fran:

And recent gigs to pick that theme up again - Swans excellent!! A shorter set but better for it! Neutral Milk Hotel - very disappointing! It had its moments but was based on the premise that if you have comedy beards, a musical saw and.....well you know where I'm going with this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12am Fran:

Yes Brian - you must have written that, perhaps in the Motel Yorbafornia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13am Fran:

Brian - if only it was Esther Rantzen......now that would make the MOJO list!!
Avatar 4:14am Bill Mac:

You guys are in rare form today. Swans WERE awesome. I think I would have like NMH better if the hall wasn't so large
  4:16am Chrissy in London:

Morning all, Great selection Bill really liked the DVA track. Good to be back not been able to catch you for a while- internet problems...
Avatar 4:18am Bill Mac:

Good to hear from you Chrissy. Apparently lotsa buzz surrounding the entire DVA CD.
Avatar 4:18am Brian in UK:

Love this drum sound, reminds me of Sly Dunbar.

Hey Chrissy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19am Fran:

Magic Band - still wonderful to see live but they are almost at the point of touring the UK too much - I make it 3 times in the last year I've seen them. As for NMH - the problem with the hall was that I was in it with them and 1500 others of which 1400 wanted a few singalongs! I agree - I saw NMH back in the 90's in a small room and without the festival singalong approach and it was magical. And you can still see A Hawk and a Hacksaw/other offshoots doing a magical set in a room of 150!
Avatar 4:22am Brian in UK:

Fran, I missed A Hawk etc last time they were over but they have done the soundtrack to this film live I believe. Not on this link though.
Avatar 4:23am Jay/London:

this is just right for having my breakfast in the sun :)))
Avatar 4:25am Brian in UK:

Fran they were on Irene's show last year playing and talking, linked if you are interested. Great moustache (on the fella)!
Avatar 4:25am Bill Mac:

I formally experienced Swans with Hawk & a Hacksaw as openers. Yeah, the crowd element of the NMH show was off putting too.
Why the Magic Band doesn't tour the states I'll never know. Seems Europe are currently their cash cow - I'm sure they'd prefer to play and make some dough than repeat the BS of days gone by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26am Fran:

Thanks Brian - went to a show where they played live to that film in an old Art Deco cinema in Leeds - wonderful
Avatar 4:28am Bill Mac:

I recall Brian bringing this movie up before - I'll have to review it again.
  4:29am KP:

Hey Bill. Is this thing on
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29am Stanley:

@Fran - I also saw NMH last week and at times it felt like watching a community sing-a-long novelty act.
Avatar 4:29am Brian in UK:

Would have loved to see that, Fran. What a start to a film.

I saw Jason Isbell the other week and even there the right arm was going up in the air for some choruses. When he plays acoustic, his favourite line is 'if you are waiting for the happy songs, you better go now'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30am Stanley:

Then I saw Toumani Diabate on Thursday - the exact opposite. Wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31am Guido from Cologne:

Diggin' Ninos du Brasil !
About to climb my bike for today's Köln - Bonn tour, maybe with visiting some exhibitions here and there.
So I'm pretty much off the board but still with the show.
Avatar 4:31am Bill Mac:

KP! Testing testing testing.... You going to the record Fair today?
Avatar 4:31am Brian in UK:

Bill, you read my mind. Dubsville. Please ignore the other grubby bits in there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31am Fran:

Oh yes Brian - the 'tache is a Movember award winner for sure and may even get a Peter Wyngarde award of merit - who if I remember rightly in 'tache terms was once referred to as 'that highly polyesterised porno-tached fopp' - best description ever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32am Stanley:

...but he smelled great!
Avatar 4:33am Brian in UK:

Jason the ponce.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33am Fran:

And talking of Wyngarde Bill - his LP called something like 'when sex rears its inquisitive little head' - no really!! is something you have to play something from - it is truly odd and oddly wonderful
  4:33am KP:

I've never heard Neutral Milk Hotel and I don't plan to
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34am Stanley:

@KP - hahahahah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34am Fran:

Stanley - perfect description of NMH. Toumani D - excellent. The only time I have seen him was with Ali Farka Toure in London when he did his last show.
Avatar 4:34am Brian in UK:

Hey Stanley you have the same trouble with your pajamas as I do.

I saw Ballake Sissoko back end of last year. I do loves a kora.
Avatar 4:35am Bill Mac:

Peter Wyngarde... didn't he do a song called Rape?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35am Stanley:

@Brian - you remember the ad correctly. I get Jason King and Peter Wyngarde mixed up (no hiding on this comments board!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36am Fran:

Brian - that seems to be a standard line for 'Americana' artists talking to audiences now - either 'here's another about death' or variations on the theme
Avatar 4:36am Brian in UK:

Am I right in thinking that beards are in vogue over here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38am Stanley:

I sold my shares in Gilette a long time ago....saw it coming.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39am Fran:

Yes Bill - Rape and also at the other end of the scale Neville Thumbcatch and Hippie and the Skinhead - truly a lyricist of epic proportions. But the lp cover is a treat in fopp fashioning!
Avatar 4:39am Brian in UK:

I know Fran, Mary Gauthier is similar but it does not diminish the power of the song. Isbell's Elephant or Yvette are powerful.
Avatar 4:40am Brian in UK:

Hey you have the same trouble with your leiderhosen as I do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41am Fran:

Mary Gauthier can turn an excellent lyric (e.g. I Drink) and I do have a soft spot for the excellent Drag Queens and Limousines album
Avatar 4:41am Jay/London:

just love your choice of music this morning bill
Avatar 4:41am Brian in UK:

New one out next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42am Fran:

Leiderhosen - good name for a prog group Brian as you could truly say they were pants!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43am Fran:

Peter Wyngarde - Rape? perhaps he was talking of crops but he couldn't get Oil Seed Rape to fit in with the lyrics?
Avatar 4:44am Brian in UK:

Oh Fran, last week I found my 45 of Court of the Crimson King. Plays like new. Must check an auction site.
  4:45am KP:

Yes to Record Fair (I think). I was there all day yesterday. It went well. Nice big space. It's an armory and I did see one guardsman handling automatic weapons
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45am Fran:

Brian - keep it...grow to love it again. Take it to dinner and put the past behind you...its not too late if you both really try!
Avatar 4:47am Brian in UK:

We just drifted apart but somehow we never really connected. It was because we were so young and did not realise the commitment at the time. We still talk but it always feels so onesided.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49am Fran:

Trust me - soft lights, a nice bottle of wine and some Frippertronics and you'll fall in love again........possibly. there is also counselling as a fallback!
Avatar 4:49am Jay/London:

what were they on when they wrote that !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52am Stanley:

Ooooooo....love this Doctor Who stylee thing.
Avatar 4:52am Bill Mac:

yeah I'm likin' this....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52am Fran:

Talking of gigs - very excited that I'll get to see Richard Pinhas in July. Bill some Pinhas or Heldon in a future show please?? And Bill - those Gipsy Rhumba and Sounds of Siam albums are a treat!
Avatar 4:53am Brian in UK:

I would need Flippertronics jumping backwards thorugh hoops. You cannot go back, Neutral Milk Hotel only saddened you. Time may heal it has been too long.
Avatar 4:53am Bill Mac:

Thanks Fran and sure I'll get some Pinhas/Heldon together for a future show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:54am Fran:

Excellent Bill
  4:54am KP:

So Bill, since you asked, I take it you are going today. If i tell mrs KP that she'll surely want to go
  4:56am david from ks:

Hey DJBMac ,,GOOD SHOW and sorry guys for this on the comment board. I was thinking the other day about an adult swim cartoon called"Squidbillies", The episode was titled "The Fine Ole Solution" It had to with genocide against humans by Early the dad squid. I kept thinking of that title and i thought that is exactly what THE USGOV. has been doing since Reagan/Bush took office. A final solution on a grand scale! Conspiracy theory does not fit in this at all ,,it is what it is! Only this time they are not wiping us as fast azay can. They are killing us slowly by destroying our environment around us with GEOENGINEERING/ chemtrail spray/HAARP weapons located round the globe in agreement with all the allied countries. NO RAIN ,NO CROPS,NO BEES eventually just freezing dry weather ,,10 TO 20million TONS OF ALUMINUM OXIDE ALONG WITH OTHER DEADLY COMBOS sprayed on a timely schedule. A plan to reduce worldwide poulation to approx.500,000,000 or whats left of us to serve the new master race. THE FINAL SOLUTION ON A LARGER SCALE. Sorry to stray from the fine music and center on this but with the short time left One can go to: GEOENGINEERINGWATCH.ORG,,This Is So Important ! thnx Bill. dna
Avatar 4:57am Bill Mac:

@KP I will be there today, more or less right after here. Maybe a quick nap before I go over...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00am Stanley:

@David - you didn't see Neutral Milk Hotel in concert did you?
  5:10am KP:

I bought an Lp from Paul Majors of Endless Boogie. I don't know what it was, just that I got it from Paul Majors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11am Fran:

Endless Boogie........great live band!
  5:14am KP:

They play around here all the time but I hsvent caught them yet. I think I just love they have an album called "Long Island."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15am Stanley:

Fran - I'm putting together another of my 'educational' cds for a select group of friends. The theme this time will be extreme guitar. Any suggestions?

Avatar 5:21am Looms:

e12 beat me to it, it's a wonderful album.
Bill, do you know that Spaceheads have a new EP out?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22am Fran:

Stanley - extreme guitar as in improvised, shredding, feedback sodden ear bleeding etc etc?
  5:23am KP:

Stanley, if you don't mind me butting in, I made such a comp that was given away on an Fmu show, just listener to listner. Lot of Television, Robert Quine, Endless Boogie ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23am Fran:

Swans rule at the moment - this album just grows and grows and I thought they peaked with The Seer - as usual I was very wrong!
Avatar 5:23am Bill Mac:

@Looms, I didn't know that. Any samples out there in Spacehead-land?
Avatar 5:24am Bill Mac:

Morning Leo - yep new Swans rules... and yeah, what Fran said...

new Dave Cloud?
  5:31am Emile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32am Stanley:

KP - nice one, did it get aired, is there a playlist?
Fran - sure, but way out there, mind-numbing psycho stuff. I'm thinking Earthless, Endless Boogie and some of them Japanese fellas like Suzuki Junzo.
Brian - hear ya, I'll do that as some form of beautiful antidote.
Avatar 5:32am Bill Mac:

Cloud split with Sexton Ming - it's what you'd expect
Avatar 5:32am Bill Mac:

Hey Emile, que tal?!
Avatar 5:33am Brian in UK:

I am hearing this in Charles Hawtry's voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34am Fran:

Stanley - I could go on but currently I'm enjoying Casper Brotzmann, Tashi Dorji, Fred Frith, Sir Richard Bishop, Bill Orcutt, Keiji Heino, Marc Ribot, Loren Connors, Jon Collin, Noel Akchote - some old and some new, some easy to get and some more obscure but lots on the Free Music Archive!
