Listener comments!

  12:05pm
Cecile:

this is great.

Man! You were here last week. I was off, but didn't think you would be around.

Now we need to compare notes on the past 2 Unsungs...
  12:05pm
paula pc:

2 for 2, Duane...wonderful start in keeping with a glorious day in NYC!!
  12:09pm
duane:

Thanx paula:) Great to hear from you :)
Cecile: Yeah two god ones, right? Angela Bofill is one of my fave singers of the ear, so it was heartbreaking to hear her talk post stroke:(
Confunkshun...Man..I just wished I was old enough to tag along on one of those tours |!!
  12:12pm
Cecile:

I was in tears. And I barely knew her music. My dad went through simliar. It's a long road back.

Confunkshun looked like they were having so much fun until the end there. I only knew their 80s ballads from Detroit radio. Their funk songs sound pretty swell.
  12:12pm
Cecile:

and next week Kool Moe Dee! Even my husband loves Moe Dee.
  12:13pm
duane:

confunkshun..the first three albums are great! Kool Moe Dee looks pretty awesome
  12:14pm
Cecile:

I'll have to look for them.
  12:15pm
Nathan:

Been checkin' out those Unsung docs... since you spoke of them months ago. Forgot to start pickin' them up again! Thanks for the reminder.
  12:15pm
still b/p:

As usual...I don't want to go step away for lunch, and a farmers market run. Outdoor speakers playing FMU s' whut they need at the downtown market.
  12:15pm
Cecile:

Love's Train has to be one of my favorite schmaltzy ballads next to All Seasons by LeVert.
  12:16pm
Cecile:

Nathan, there are 3 new ones - Sly, Angie Bofill and Confunkshun.
  12:16pm
Lizzie:

Was that new?
  12:16pm
paula pc:

Love Train by Confunkshun was the theme of a slow jams show on WDMT in Cleveland for years...ESP, Cecile, as I see you just evoked similar emotions...and yes, so sad for Angela Bofill
  12:19pm
paula pc:

I should say, "Love's Train," and "Con Funk Shun."
  12:19pm
Ciderbully:

Forever groovy, Duane!
  12:19pm
Cecile:

Ha, Paula, I just knew. ESP!
  12:21pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

That Halloween album cover was amazingly hilarious Duane! Great show as always.
  12:22pm
duane:

Smiles all around errybodeee
  12:23pm
Nathan:

@Cecile I grab 'em off Youtube and sometimes they take a while to show up.
  12:24pm
Cecile:

duane, do you have any vintage confunkshun you can slide on.

I dig it, Nathan. It's probably still easier than trying to watch them from the TVOne site, right? I always had trouble with their player.
  12:25pm
Nathan:

@Cecile yeah I've tried their site as well.. diabolically bad. But nice that they don't seem to issue any takedowns on the Youtube content. Kind've like the BBC doesn't really 'mind'....
  12:25pm
Mike East:

I introduced my wife to Sly and the Family Stone last weekend. Reminded me how mindblowing that can be. Great set so far, Duane. You're liftin' my spirit.
  12:26pm
Nathan:

"The Duane Train" that's a new one... made my laugh as I was takin' the rice off the burner.
  12:26pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

Any trashy italodisco on our plates today?
  12:27pm
Caryn:

Funny, I was watching the final moments of a tv series while the Delores track was playing, and all I could think of was "this would've made for a cool soundtrack for this scene". Made it seem almost "cool blaxploitation showdown"...
  12:27pm
robyn:

i want a martini lunch...
  12:27pm
Nathan:

Americans need more holiday. Seriously. You guys work waaay too hard and get too little for it.
  12:28pm
Cecile:

that's why I stuck it out with public employement - much more vacation than private sector.
  12:28pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

Something really sleazy. Vanity 6 sleazy. The Flirts sleazy.
  12:32pm
Cecile:

this sounds like a Candyman record. And I mean this in the best sense.
  12:32pm
duane:

Wow! Everyone's in a randy mood here..I like it, I like it:)
  12:33pm
Mike East:

I get 3 weeks vacation/year. Just took one week, but now I have to work 2.5 weeks without a day off...gotta make that cash, though.
  12:34pm
Nathan:

Ain't nothing wrong with more vacation. Everyone needs time to relax, see their family, work on their hobbies. I remember when I moved to England from the states and how relaxed everyone was in the private sector about going on holiday.. it was more like "Hey I'm going to take some of my 21 days holiday (plus 10 public holidays) to XXXXX on XX date to XX date" and they were completely fine by it. It wasn't the old, "We decide when you can take your holiday, if ever," mentality. Which frankly sucks.
  12:36pm
Ahmet:

Favorite Aretha Lyric: Knew you'd be a vision in white ... how'd you get your pants so tight?
  12:37pm
Mike East:

@Nathan - I agree, that sucks. My bosses are pretty accomodating...but then again, so am I, so it works out for them, too.
  12:38pm
Cecile:

ha! I just ordered a supercheap copy of No Shame in My Game.
  12:38pm
Phillip in San Antonio:

Its getting stankier in here! Good thing!
  12:41pm
Cecile:

niiiiiice.
  12:44pm
yayson:

always so good, this show.
  12:45pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I worked for a Canadian company that was bought out by a New York company... they really grumbled about our 4 weeks vacation and that extra stat that we get
  12:48pm
Jex:

this song is great!
  12:51pm
Cecile:

4 AM is great
  12:52pm
Daniel T from Copenhagen:

This song (Now by Old Smokey) is quite similar to the theme song of Snuff Box http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLKibXI3fXY
  12:53pm
Denise in DC:

I am proud that I recognized this song as a Monkees song even before the vocals kicked in.
  1:03pm
Cecile:

Nile Rogers's twitter feed is great.
  1:18pm
Cecile:

as were the Relatives
  1:21pm
seang:

let's boogie
  1:26pm
Cecile:

segs smooth as silk. you get an A in beatmatching!
  1:27pm
Cecile:

my God, I may have heard this on UP radio back in the day.
  1:28pm
Cecile:

when did the Michael Burton record come out?
  1:30pm
duane:

cecile:'81
  1:31pm
Cecile:

Maybe? Or I might have heard it on the WCBN funk show at the time
  1:35pm
bennett4senate:

this Kasso is an edit, sort of, right? isn't there a more four on the floor version?
  1:37pm
duane:

benet: This is the Jellybean remix from '85 I believe
  1:40pm
bennett4senate:

hey duane I'm gonna DJ an event at a fancy chocolate store, any ideas for subversive message jams I should get in the mix?
  1:46pm
Cecile:

Skin and Bones by the Kinks?
  1:46pm
Nathan:

Isaac Hayes - Chocolate Salty Balls
  1:47pm
Cecile:

Gil Scott-Heron - the Train from Washington
  1:48pm
Cecile:

Machine - there but for the grace of God go I.
  1:49pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Chocolate City..? too obvious?
  1:50pm
Sammy:

Who can take the sunlight ... sprinkle it with dew ...
  1:51pm
Denise in DC:

**sigh** Gil Scott-Heron RIP.
  1:53pm
Sir Walter:

Miami ... The Raleigh Hotel ... wish I were there, poolside.
  1:56pm
Jagger:

England always shows us how to re-imagine our own blues and soul. American singers are too busy fulfilling the visions of their producers.
  1:58pm
james stacheless:

Just tuned in - sounds great as usual, Duane. Glad I don't have a gig and can stop by your party on the 20th!
  1:59pm
duane:

james: :)
  1:59pm
tim from champaign:

Is this Timmy Thomas song going to end with a frying pan upside his head?
  1:59pm
Neg-guh-tor:

Great show, as usual. Dig!
  1:59pm
bennett4senate:

does anybody know about Timmy Thomas, did he have a cool life story or anything? was he a black hippy?
  2:00pm
Cecile:

Timmy, just say you're going into the Witness Proection Program.

tim, ESP! lol
  2:00pm
Rev. Green:

At least he isn't getting grits thrown on him.
  2:01pm
Cliff Richard:

Hey Bennet! play one of my records? ;)
  2:01pm
still b/p:

Ahhhh back for final hour. And bought the sorriest looking kale that ever drooped on a farmers market table...but only for a dollah. Is there a wrenching soul song about that?
  2:02pm
Sam Cooke:

or worse
  2:03pm
Mangione (Feel So Good!):

That's why he's playing Hugh Mase"Kale"a
  2:03pm
tim from champaign:

I was getting the stink eye from my female co-workers for just listening to that song and I've got earphones on!
  2:08pm
Cheri Pi:

I knew Annie was missing...
  2:09pm
still b/p:

Ah, buono, Mangione! ...and maybe something later from David Ruffage.
  2:10pm
Cheri Pi:

Sb/P-I heard that you can refresh wilted greens by swishing them around in some vinegar water. Haven't tried it myself....
  2:14pm
Cecile:

Oh, my sweet gangster.
  2:15pm
Cheri Pi:

hahahahaha. they wish.
  2:17pm
still b/p:

If it's looking any worse -- as it probably will after a few hours in my bike pannier -- I will try to reanimate it. Maybe stab a giant adenalin hypo into it...à la the Pulp Fiction OD emergency.
  2:20pm
Prog Police:

Hmmm... Cozy Powell, should this incident be reported? This track's a close call.
  2:23pm
Cecile:

franklin agaye?
  2:26pm
Cecile:

whoops, mispelled. hahahaha
  2:28pm
Caryn:

@sb/p: some time in a bowl of ice water should perk that kale up
  2:30pm
Cecile:

You've heard of the Ex Cops, but have you heard of Axe Cop?
http://axecop.com/index.php/acask
  2:31pm
duane:

cecile: HAhahaha..me likes
  2:31pm
still b/p:

Thanks, Caryn. Hope YOU get some greens.

Too bad commenter slugluv wasn't on here for that last track.
  2:32pm
Cecile:

it's amazing. A little kid writes it, and his older brother draws it up for him.
  2:33pm
robyn:

"Throughout the recording of the album, Young and his fellow musicians consumed a homemade concoction dubbed "Honey Slides", a goop of sauteed marijuana and honey that "felt like heroin"." Sounds a bit safer though.
  2:34pm
duane:

robyn: That sounds awesome, actually...
  2:35pm
Cecile:

that explains a whole lot about that album, actually.
  2:35pm
robyn:

it does sound awesome. but heroin? you would think young would know heroin from heroin. so maybe a little scary too...
  2:36pm
james stacheless:

Cool pair of covers!
  2:37pm
duane:

robyn & ceclile: And why It sounds so good when your stuffin your face with brownies while you're..you know
  2:37pm
still b/p:

Has Billy Jam ever tried that double-sticky icky?
  2:43pm
robyn:

thanks for the shoutout duane. what will my mother think!
  2:46pm
Jose Cuervo:

Do Not forget to wash down the honeyslide con ample shots of tequila. Also, Mr. Young never no uso the heroin, Mr. Whitten and Mr. Berry they do that.
  2:49pm
Mike East:

This was a great show today, Duane. Don't forget - Free Parliament show tomorrow at Rockefeller Park!
  2:50pm
Caryn:

The honey slides story really does explain the sound of that album. I was just guessing lots of booze, but the goop actually sounds better and even healthier!
  2:51pm
robyn:

@cuervo he didn't but many people he knew did...you see what i'm saying. here's some more on honey slides: http://thrasherswheat.org/rns/honeyslides.htm
  2:52pm
robyn:

""The high was debilitating. 'People passed out,' said Elliot Roberts. 'This stuff was, like, way worse than heroin.'" actually, this may just speak to the lack of seriousness with which they regarded heroin.
  2:52pm
Fan Request:

Anybody got the Golden Smog's cover of Revolution Blues?
  2:53pm
common:

creeeepy
  2:56pm
bennett4senate:

Madvillain, right?
  2:56pm
duane:

bennet: Yup!
  2:58pm
Mister Mackey:

Okay, children, what do we say?
