OK Duane, before you get plastered and I have to go to a meeting, time for comparing notes on the Kool Moe Dee Unsung. I think the part that made me laugh hardest was LA Sunshine doing his WWW moves while Moe was trying to do a serious interview.

All of those things might be more exciting than Hot Chip. But that's just my opinion, of course.
  12:36pm
Mary Wing:

Didn't hear it, Duane. Anything print out?
  12:38pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Well Jeremy, there's any number of bands you got a thing for that I just don't get, but it's all opinion!
  12:38pm
Duane:

Yeah I got a print out mary. Should I send it again?
  12:39pm
Caryn:

Aaaahhh, it's been such an enjoyable show so far. Are you inspired by the prospect of cocktails or what?
  12:41pm
Mary Wing:

If it printed out a test, that's good enough for me. Did you hear it in the studio?
  12:41pm
Jeremy Shatan:

I know that all too well, Jan - but I just can't resist a good straight line!

Jan Audun Uretsky:

A Drink With Something In It

There is something about a Martini,
A tingle remarkably pleasant;
A yellow, a mellow Martini;
I wish I had one at present.
There is something about a Martini,
Ere the dining and dancing begin,
And to tell you the truth,
It is not the vermouth--
I think that perhaps it's the gin.

Ogden Nash

  1:37pm
robyn:

i still have "love train" in my head but i guess hearing it every 20 minutes can do that to you.
  1:41pm
Yvonne:

Hey guys here are the ingredients to that FDR drinkie poo:
Plymouth gin (essential!) 2 oz
Noilly Prat (smells nice!) 1/3 oz
Splash olive brine (ew yucky!) (but yummy too)

Shake gin/vermouth with ice, add olive brine and shake again. Rub twista lemon on rim of glass, a fancy glass please. Garnish with a green olive, and enjoy! Have a nice martini lunch! FDR would be proud...
  1:42pm
Yvonne:

There you have it. Have it!
  1:44pm
Mike East:

I like my dirty martinis filthy. olive brine is delicious.
  1:45pm
joe:

@ Yvonne so I should avoid drinking it out of my Daffy Duck jelly jar glass? Bummer.
  1:46pm
Yvonne:

@Joe... you can do WHATEVER YOU WANT TO WHENEVER YOU WANT TO
  1:54pm
kata:

Yvonne, I knew someone who was allergic to sulfates. therefore allergic to wine and a whole huge list of other foods. Sad !
  1:54pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Duane... You guys *are* getting tight!
  1:54pm
Eli:

More animal sacrifice!
  1:55pm
Yvonne:

What is the list of foods?
  1:55pm
Yvonne:

I'm allergic to animal sacrifice.
  1:55pm
Cheri Pi:

This is already AWESOME! Thank you Duane.
  1:56pm
robyn:

to hell with wine anyway. guaranteed headache.
  1:57pm
kata:

maybe it's sulfites not sulfates. ?
  1:57pm
robyn:

this is a great "martinis just kicked in" song.
  1:58pm
Yvonne:

I'm doomed
  2:00pm
kata:

I think beer was on the list, and anything with vinegar in it. Sulfites I believe.
  2:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey Duane & Company! Hey everyone!
Anyone "playing along", drinking martinis with them? :)
  2:01pm
Nathan:

The wheels are starting to wobble a bit.
  2:02pm
kata:

hi MFS, I'm chained to a desk at 11am, so no 'tinis here. Inspired though !
  2:03pm
steve:

oh god, i want a dirty martini...
  2:04pm
kat330:

Two rounds late, but expecting the third round to be a knockout! Hi, Duane and all!
  2:04pm
Matt from Springfield:

Hey kata! I may be inspired to make a martini tonight. This weekend though, I finally tried making a manhattan--those are pretty good. I even "converted" my Mom over to a bourbon drink! She never drinks whiskey, but quite enjoyed that particular cocktail.
  2:05pm
CeciIe:

Play some good music like Smashmouth or Nickleback!!!
  2:06pm
Yvonne:

OK listeners here it is, the magic of The Vesper Martini, thanks to James Bond, shaken not stirred, OF COURSE!

*3 parts Gordons gin!
*1/2 part Kina Lillet
*Substitute Lillet Blanc with orange bitters
*Long strip of lemon ZEST!

Drink up sillies.
  2:07pm
Matt from Springfield:

http://www.drinksmixer.com/drink580.html
Drinksmixer is a FANTASTIC cocktail recipe site. I particularly enjoyed this mix. Coating the rim of a martini glass with orange or lemon, and/or squeezing some in but NOT adding the peel can really make a drink! I see above they did that with their martini as well.
  2:07pm
Yvonne:

I'm doomed
  2:07pm
kat330:

@Yvonne: Well, I'm having the long strip of lemon zest at any rate -- in a tall iced coffee.
  2:08pm
CeciIe:

we are ALL....doomed
  2:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Augghh! CeciIe is drunk! ;)
  2:08pm
Yvonne:

Sounds funny! I wanna try it @kat330
  2:08pm
Yvonne:

Dooooooomed
  2:09pm
CeciIe:

drank
  2:09pm
Puertoricarious:

That drummer for Talbot-While was nasty
  2:10pm
kat330:

Some restaurant first served me iced espresso that way -- caffe fredo, I believe. The coffee I make is strong enough to almost be espresso. It makes a nice summer alternative.
  2:10pm
Eli:

Less animal sacrifice!
  2:10pm
Droll:

Yvonne is definitely toying with fate... I hope there's someone sober standing over the dump button.

. o O ( But these Martinis go to eleven. )
  2:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

GORDON'S! The best gin for the value! "London's #1", or so they say. Very nice, clean, tasty gin, and priced lower than really fancy gins. Perfect in fact for a G&T--Gordon's & Schweppes.
Kina Lillet, never heard of that vermouth before but evidently that was the original one mentioned in the James Bond novels.
  2:11pm
kat330:

Groovin' and movin' to this sound.
  2:12pm
CeciIe:

mmmmmm Boon's Farm.......and manischewitz concord grape wine.
  2:13pm
Caryn:

Only have water to drink, but I might put it in a martini glass to feel like I'm partying along.
  2:13pm
~L:

Just wondering what the Martini expert thinks of vodka martinis, and then those made with the candy-type flavored vodkas, or the flavored vodkas craze in general. Gummy (swedish fish flavor), Toasted Marshmallow, Cake, Watermelon are some. I have seen people who are not drinkers change their minds for these.
  2:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

Not sure if I would go for a dirty martini, but I give FDR huge props for using Plymouth gin! There used to be a whole category of such gins, but I think there's only one maker of it now, called "Plymouth gin". It's a milder in strength, but still wonderfully flavorful; I can even drink it straight, especially when chilled! Search for Plymouth gin if you haven't tried it yet!
  2:17pm
kat330:

I was quite late to the martini -- not a gin fan -- but an uncle up in Chicago made me the first one I ever tried, and I loved it. Only enjoyed his martinis though -- with 3 olives -- and never ordered them out or made them myself.
  2:17pm
Cheri Pi:

I would drink a very dirty martini, would need the olive juice for hydration purposes- I'm such a light weight.
  2:18pm
Duane:

Wow!
  2:18pm
kat330:

Lots of salty brine in the olive juice, though, so that hampers hydration, too.
  2:19pm
Caryn:

It has to be said that the original Vesper Martini recipe includes 1 part vodka. Also, fun Kina Lillet fact: it is also Hannibal Lecter's drink of choice.
  2:19pm
Cheri Pi:

Duane- you need to do occasional sobriety tests on mike so we can check your progress. recite a poem or something. Or the lyrics to Erotic City. We need a base level Duane before things go comically awry
  2:21pm
Ike:

I'm not much of a drinker, but the band is very intoxicating.
  2:21pm
Cheri Pi:

really? I would think that salt giving electrolytes would help- is there a martini doctor in the house?
  2:22pm
kat330:

Well, extra salt is needed on a hot, sweaty day, so that would be a good thing these days.
  2:22pm
DCE:

yeah, that was great, just caught the last little bit
  2:23pm
DCE:

or, it's still happening, I guess!
  2:23pm
Caryn:

Vodka in Vesper Martini should preferably be Polish or Russian, and grain, not potato vodka. However, as the recipe for Kina Lillet was changed in 1986, the taste will not be the same nowadays :(
Martini fact: in the original Fleming stories, James Bond orders a vodka martini 19 times, and a gin martini 16 times. And the Vesper Martini once.
  2:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Are We Not Men? We Are Debo! Band.
  2:26pm
Caryn:

Bond fact: George Lazenby and Roger Moore never order a martini in any of their Bond movies. Other characters who know what kind of drink Bond likes make or order it for them, however.
  2:26pm
kat330:

I hear such a mix of world music influences. As Duane said, wow!
  2:27pm
northguineahills:

I see I'm in good company here. Been away from ye ole laptop prepping and cooking collard greens (vegan).

I prefer gin martinis, but I rarely buy gin, so if I'm at home, I'll make a dirty vodka martini.
  2:27pm
Matt from Springfield:

Wow Caryn, I guess Connery made it such a meme that the producers didn't feel James himself needed to say the line in every movie.
  2:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Buñuel! And just like the Churchill, ha HA!
  2:30pm
kat330:

Instead of an olive, you put an eyeball (the Bunuel)?
  2:30pm
Stanley:

The most beautiful drink in the world......
  2:31pm
Caryn:

@Matt: that was actually one of the reasons Moore gave for making his movies more light-hearted as a whole. He said that Bond is not exactly much of a secret agent if every bartender in the world knows his drink preferences.
  2:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Poached, or sliced eyeball :P
  2:32pm
Mike East:

my wife keeps buying gin for me...even though she knows it makes me go mad. Been mostly drinking it with a bit of seltzer or tonic and a twist of lemon, and sometimes a splash of cranberry with lots of ice. Fantastic summer drink. I'll have to start up with some martinis. Hard to drink it before it gets warm on a really hot day, though.
  2:32pm
Caryn:

@Matt: also, the other characters of course say the line for Bond in those movies, either ordering for him or handing him the drink and saying what it is. So the line remains.
  2:32pm
kat330:

Seems like Lecter would have preferred the Bunuel with a speared eyeball.
  2:32pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

When I used to bar tend (eons ago) I got so sick of folk complaining about a martinis not being dry enough I'd just skip the vermouth... The best part was when they'd still complain that it wasn't dry enough!
  2:32pm
Matt from Springfield:

Not if it's Rum Afternoon for Irwin! ;)
  2:33pm
joe:

Wait did Duane just say Irwin was going to bring a sense of sanity?
  2:34pm
Mike East:

...and why do I "have" to start drinking martinis, you ask? Because the man on the radio said so, that's why.
  2:34pm
joe:

@Jan I bet you they had no idea what they were complaining about they just thought it was the cool thing to do.
  2:34pm
Caryn:

Bond likes his martinis shaken because it makes both potato vodka and vermouth less oily-tasting, and it makes the drink colder. Or as Bond explained: 'When I'm...er...concentrating, I never have more than one drink before dinner. But I do like that one to be large and very strong and very cold, and very well-made. I hate small portions of anything, particularly when they taste bad."
  2:34pm
kat330:

Think I'll switch from my iced coffee to some honey water.
  2:35pm
northguineahills:

(slips outside to buy some gin b/c the radio said so.....,)
  2:36pm
Yvonne:

@Stanley, is your name really Stanley?
  2:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Shaken, or stirred? How to best mix in sticky honey with water, with ice? :)
@Jan: That's funny, some people just never satisfy!
  2:37pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

"Bubblers" Ogilvie!
  2:37pm
Yvonne:

@Scott thanks for the PB&J
  2:37pm
kat330:

"Radio, radio " "Do as you are told"
  2:37pm
Yvonne:

I'm less doomed
  2:37pm
Caryn:

@Matt: Even Sean Connery didn't use the line until "Goldfinger". Until then, his Bond too was given his drink by others.
  2:38pm
Yvonne:

@God, please help
  2:38pm
Stanley:

@Yvonne yes and no....
  2:38pm
kat330:

Is Stanley Scott W.?
  2:39pm
Yvonne:

@kat330 I think so!
  2:39pm
Stanley:

@kat330 - in his dreams
  2:39pm
kat330:

@Matt: Honey water needs to be shaken in order to be stirred. ;)
  2:40pm
YvonneJoleneStanley:

Whoa this is getting too, as they say, "meta"
  2:40pm
joe:

Me personally I skip the martini all togeather. Go out and get yourself a jar of extra large olives. pour out about a 1/4 of the brine (or more if you don't like salty). Freeze for a little bit until that get just a bit of an ice crystal on them. Take out fill the rest of the jar with vodka or gin depending on your like (i'm a vodka guy) and ad vermouth if you don't like dry (again like mine sahara). Put back in the freezer over night. Then in the fridge next day to defrost a bit. Grab a fork and if your nice go ahead and share.

kat330:

And who were the Swipers? His daughter and wife? Thought the woman sounded a tad like Amanda Nazario.
  2:41pm
YvonneJoleneStanley:

I'm ready for more martini
  2:41pm
YvonneJoleneStanley:

The Swipers?
  2:43pm
kat330:

Maybe I'm misremembering. Wouldn't be the first time. I think Scott W's contribution to Kurt's MM Friday the 13th was attributed to Staney & the Swipers.
  2:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Probably not very secretive for every bar in the world to know a spy's drink, but Bond could still have been undercover--he just goes to every bar in the world, who then give him his favorite drink based on the face that always orders it!
  2:43pm
Matt from Springfield:

Mmmm, hear that shaker!
  2:44pm
kat330:

StanLey, sheesh -- S-T-E-L-L-A !!
  2:45pm
Nathan:

The orgy just doesn't end!
  2:45pm
Nathan:

I'm starting to chaff.
  2:45pm
Scott W:

I am the swiper
  2:45pm
Scott W:

Stanley's on your radio today!
  2:45pm
Caryn:

@Matt: yeah, if your undercover role is an international jetsetting playboy who keeps showing up at exotic casinos and resorts, people might well know your face and coctail preferences, while you stay in character. But the objection was just Moore's take on it.
  2:46pm
kat330:

Ah, OK. That clears everything up.
  2:46pm
Nathan:

Bomba safphrreereree... iss all gooood!
  2:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

Darondo > this Richard McDonald, yeah, make sure your skin isn't blistering! Bring out some lotion, just remember not to drink it...
  2:47pm
kat330:

Orange-y orgy?
  2:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Luv N Haight", great label name!
  2:49pm
Jeremy Shatan:

I missed a lot - anyone else put Peychaud's bitters in their martini?
  2:50pm
joe:

Things like this are why public transportaion is great.
  2:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

Beer Hear! or rather, Martini Genie! with Duane, Yvonne, Stanley, Ben! And all YOU folks on here! A fun show!
  2:51pm
Stanley:

And I'll be back, no swipers are gonna stop me. Take care y'all
  2:51pm
Caryn:

Ending the martini party completely sober, but pleased by the smooth grooves of the music.
  2:52pm
kat330:

Great fun in this bar car of the love train. Thanks, for this third round, Duane and guests! I'll try to catch the first two in archives. Later all!
  2:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Jeremy: I usually use Angostura bitters in drinks that require it, Peychaud's is I think the original absinthe cocktail bitter, and in other New Orleans area drinks.
  2:54pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Jeremy, you missed them making the Vespa from Casino Royale!
  2:55pm
Cecile:

Whew, I caught a little bit...
  2:55pm
Cheri Pi:

Where the hell is Pierre-he's writing a book on cocktails?
  2:55pm
Jeremy Shatan:

I illustrated an article about cocktails years ago for GQ and their guy insisted on Peychaud's for the best martini - I've been doing it ever since!
  2:55pm
?:

6 parts gin
3 parts sweet vermouth
  2:55pm
Cecile:

  2:55pm

  2:57pm
Yvonne:

I am also a Swiper
  2:58pm
Yvonne:

Yes, we're doomed.
  2:59pm
Cecile:

Sometimes, I like a dirty martini with Punt e Mes red herbal vermouth instead of regular vermouth. A defunct restaurant used to make them and call them Bastilles.
  2:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Yvonne: We who are doomed/about to be doomed salute you !
  3:00pm
Eli:

Great show as always D
