Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 3:12pm SSS:

I used to have a pachinko machine, and I particularly love stuff that sounds like music from the '60s, but is more recent.

"Baby Let Me Bang Your Box" was covered by adult film actress and erotic dancer Robin Byrd as the theme song for her public access TV show in Manhattan — 80's and 90's era...

Wow - that Ruth track is new to me! I only knew the Polaroid electro/new wave stuff - speaking of Thierry Muller, new Ilitch release apparently in the works...

inturist is the name of the Soviet hotels that were exclusively for visiting foreigners, to keep them separated from locals. it was also a tourist agency type service for soviets who were able to make arrangements for trips outside of the Soviet bloc
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:05pm Fox:

The track is pronounced "Moozhcheena Moyego Otza" and the album sounds like " Komandeerovka"
  Tue. 2/5/19 4:06pm andrewb:

The band name "Normal Brain" must come from the Abby-Normal brain bit from Young Frankenstein
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:08pm Creamo Coyl:

Damn you guys are coming w/ the facts today! Interesting stuff re: public access & Russia. and who doesn't love Young Frankenstein? Not this guy.
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:09pm Fox:

I took four years of Russian. I can't remember what anything means, but I can read it.
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:17pm Creamo Coyl:

Hmmm, kinda like Lee Harvey eh?
  Tue. 2/5/19 4:23pm rw:

I gave a copy of Young Frankenstein to my kid to give to a neighbor kid for his birthday. Later, my wife said, "I heard someone gave Jared Young Frankenstein for his birthday. Who gives a 7 yr old a movie like that?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/5/19 4:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I was about 10 - which was utterly perfect.
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:26pm Aitch:

Loving all this Thirlwell / Foetus stuff. Staple of (very) late night radio here in Australia way back when.

Does anyone know if Marc Almond was aware of The Screamers when Soft Cell first started?
  Tue. 2/5/19 4:36pm rw:

Thanks tim! It was probably a little inappropriate but what the hell. My thinking was not far from yours. It was a while ago. The kid turned into a mild degenerate but I think that may have more to do with his controlled childhood than anything else. His dad also died after a long bout with cancer which was very sad and impactful I'm sure.

Oh! And speaking of The Screamers, I had a brief email exchange with Tommy Gear the other day.
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:36pm Chris from DC:

Aw, I missed Get Out Of My House. A friend would always play that at the end of his basement shows.
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:36pm Creamo Coyl:

They were contemporary really. Some of this stuff is from '78. Certainly into Suicide, as we'll soon find out. You can def hear the kinship he had with Throbbing Gristle on this stuff.
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:37pm Creamo Coyl:

Scream-mail! nice.
@ChfromDC Good song to get people to fuck off for sure.
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:40pm ultradamno:

Back when Thirlwell was the king of the morbid one-liner. The Henny Youngman of death and perdition.
  Tue. 2/5/19 4:41pm andrewb:

fingers crossed for "Clothes Hoist"
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:46pm Fox:

THis is an excellent set.

...& where was little TrentReznor just then...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/5/19 4:49pm tim from champaign:

Do we have thirwell to blame for Nine Inch Nails and Merlyn Munson?
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:49pm Creamo Coyl:

Ha. Foetus + Soft Cell = NIN. Also Coil + Flock Of Seagulls = NIN. Also Skinny Puppy + Donna Summer = NIN.
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:50pm Cheri Pi:

Marc Almond had his finger on the pulse of pretty much everything methinks
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:50pm Creamo Coyl:

His fingers were everywhere. At least, that's what I've heard.
  Tue. 2/5/19 4:51pm rw:

What would we do without push-button phones?

Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:55pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

HA, Tim... old uncle Jim has a lot to answer for, true. But that early output is fairly bulletproof.
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:56pm herb.nyc:

oops, I'm away from stereo. I see SOFT CELL is being played a lot. aside: I have a memory of seeing Marc Almond perform at the mercury lounge, nyc. can someone confirm? I did a quick duckduckgo and see he played bowery ballroom in 1999. thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/5/19 4:56pm tim from champaign:

Despite my snarky question about what cruddy musicians do when they hear a Foetus records, this has been a really enlightening set for me. Thanks, Creamo!
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:57pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

Still the favorite thing the man ever did was the B-side to the Motorslug 12" ... one brutal 3-note riff without change. It's a marvel.
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 4:57pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

ALSO: seconding Tim 4:56. Never got to hear the early, filthier Soft Cell material. Lovely stuff.
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 5:00pm ultradamno:

A much as I love Ache/Hole/Nail (not to mention Wings Off Flies), my favorite thing he's done is Steroid Maximus (Fever-dream Hermann)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/5/19 5:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...all the heavies like NickCave had time for Marc...
  Tue. 2/5/19 5:02pm rw:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/5/19 5:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 2/5/19 5:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Cecile here once observed that Suicide is like Synth Rawkabilly - which was so obvious & huge I didn't even take it in @ the moment...
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 5:07pm ultradamno:

Maybe something from Sylvie and Babs now.
Avatar Tue. 2/5/19 5:07pm Cheri Pi:
