Hey Jeff! It has been as hot as the devil's buttcrack here for the last week. We could use a little rain.
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:03pm Dean:

Houston Person! One of the "elders" I suggested Jeff Golick should celebrate before he passes on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:04pm Funky16Corners:

@Gary - Thanks to my oldest son's new high school schedule, I am up at 5:30 until further notice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:04pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Dean!
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:05pm Erica:

Hi Larry! Yes it's been so hot outside lately. We need more rain. Also, how was your birthday and vacation?
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:05pm northguineahills:

Errand time, will be in and out Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:06pm Funky16Corners:

Hi Erica! NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:07pm Funky16Corners:

The vacation was a lot of fun. Many crab cakes were ingested as well as many beers and I brought home a bunch of records. My birthday was delightful, thank you. Some new cooking supplies and books.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:08pm Erica:

I guessed you had a fun time. Also, I noticed on your Facebook page that you like Ramen too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:08pm Funky16Corners:

Oh yeah. I am a certified ramen fiend.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:10pm Franco Twinkie:

Hello Larry and all. Are we gonna do a rain dance tonight?
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:10pm Erica:

I eat ramen noodles that you heat in the pot or microwave but not actual ramen. I don't like the eggs and stuff that's in ramen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:11pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Franco!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:12pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I LOVE the eggs, and the pork belly, and the noodles and the seaweed and every other delicious Japanese thing they stuff in there. I haven't tried cold ramen yet, but I intend to soon.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:13pm Erica:

Larry I was talking about instant noodles. And I'm glad you enjoy the meal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:14pm Funky16Corners:

My youngest son loves the instant ones, and they are a lot cheaper than the real thing.
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:15pm chresti:

I lived on top ramen in the 70s- adding egg, mushrooms, garlic...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:15pm Funky16Corners:

That's the way to go. Customize the cheap stuff.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:16pm Erica:

Yeah me too. I especially love the cheddar cheese noodles (yes they exist - they're sold at Walmart).
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:16pm Franco Twinkie:

Larry, next time your in L.A. I'll take you on a ramen crawl. We live in the SGV which thick with ramen parlors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:16pm Funky16Corners:

Oooh! Gotta look for those!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:17pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - I would love that. I'd also like to hit all the good Mexican taco trucks, Vietnamese restaurants and every other plentiful ethnic food in the LA area.
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:17pm Dean:

My motto: eat what you want to eat.

Lord, yes, SGV is incredible. But shhhhh...don't want too many folks heading that way.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:18pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, you come too!
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:19pm Dean:

Mexican in LA (rather, East LA) is great in the strip malls, too. Pico Rivera, Norwalk, Downey, Whittier...my haunts.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:20pm Erica:

Why not Dean?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:21pm Funky16Corners:

David Chang did a great episode of his show Ugly Delicious where they hit up regional taco trucks (i.e. Mexican regions) in LA. It looked amazing.
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:22pm chresti:

San Gabriel is dumpling central
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:25pm Funky16Corners:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:27pm doctorjazz:

Great Beatles cover! Hi all!
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:27pm Franco Twinkie:

Don't forget Huntington Park. There is this place called Aqui Es Tescoco that is in some industrial area that serves boreggo (lamb) Mexico city style, on the weekends.
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:27pm Dean:

When the audience expands, the product often suffers. Folks have been dining at Los Sanchez for years (though now it's renamed, which disturbs me). It is a viable, superlative Mexican take-out joint. They're not equipped to handle quasi-celebrity, thanks to, well, David Chang, Guy Fieri, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:27pm Funky16Corners:

We're very lucky that Central NJ has become a settling ground for people from Southeast and South Asia. There is a great variety of Chinese, Indian, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Korean food within driving distance. Unfortunately our local banh mi place shut down recently.
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:27pm chresti:

Re: school schedule - there’s mounting consensus that kids’ brains need sleep and to change class start time an hour or so later. Teacher’s unions oppose the idea
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:28pm Dean:

Frankly, I'm not into fine distinctions between cuisines. If it's good shit, it's good shit. If it ain't, it ain't.
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:28pm chresti:

This is a GREAT version of Taxman!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:29pm doctorjazz:

(oops I just saw the theme of the show .. Sounds like fun!)
Wed. 9/5/18 10:29pm Gary via app:

I just got back and missed Taxman, noooo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:30pm Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - My wife is a teacher and she would LOVE a later start time. In our town I think that the early start time in the high schools is due to distribution of bus resources.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:30pm Erica:

I was aware this week's show would be Beatles-related with the Revolver album. I was expecting more Beatles versions though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:31pm Funky16Corners:

All covers
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:31pm Erica:

Okay Larry.
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:34pm chresti:

The thing about San Gabriel is...more parking
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:35pm doctorjazz:

There are studies that teens sleep clock is shifted to fall asleep later, and wake up later, and recommendations to start classes later Some school districts have started doing this.
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:35pm chresti:

I’m enjoying the covers that you selected!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:36pm doctorjazz:

Vince Giraldi is all over the place ,isn't he?
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:36pm Dean:

San Gabriel: Babita. I used to frequent the joint Roberto ran in Norwalk before he opened Babita. Stunning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:36pm Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - Thanks!
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:37pm Erica:

Larry playing Lobo? Cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:37pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - I think that most people have no idea about Guaraldi outside of the Charlie Brown stuff (which I love). His late 60s albums are great.
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:38pm chresti:

Good news doctor. It was impossible to wake my son before 10 or 11
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:39pm Funky16Corners:

Camarones Topolobampos con salsa de fresas. OMFG.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:40pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, this afternoon I was driving around like an aimless fool when the dinner bell went off. The first place I saw was Senior Fish, so it was fish burritos for me and the missus. While scarfing her's down, Chesti comment how they resemble the great mission style burritos in SF. Now I know them is fightin' words to lots of L.A. homies, but shit dude, these killed it...maybe I was just starving.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:40pm Erica:

Not me. I had trouble getting any sleep as a teenager (stress, IBS, worries).
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:41pm Dean:

I have never partaken of a "mission style burrito." I have, however, enjoyed burritos in Concord, which are dynamite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:41pm Funky16Corners:

I remember coming home from school and collapsing on the couch for two hours, then eating dinner and staying up until midnight listening to the radio.
Wed. 9/5/18 10:41pm Gary via app:

Crazy bass
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:42pm Dean:

But still, Whittier and East LA Mexican can't be topped up here in Northern Cal. Just no comparison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:43pm Funky16Corners:

@Gary - That Four King Cousins album is great
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:43pm Erica:

Lots of jazz covers tonight.

My wife works just a stop or two from those sites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:49pm doctorjazz:

Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:50pm Franco Twinkie:

RW! Where do go in the North OC when you must fuck up a burrito?
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:51pm rw:

Señor Fish... Is there still one downtown? They took up in the old Atomic Cafe space for a while. Used to go to one on Eagle Rock Blvd. when my daughter was little.
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:51pm Dean:

La Habra, Molcasalsa and Castanedas, are decent burrito joints.

Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:56pm coelacanth∅:

good day sunshine one of the beatles songs i never liked. then i heard the "anthology version" (a demo?) and i liked it.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 10:56pm Franco Twinkie:

RW, The one downtown is gone. Eagle Rock is still there - they remodeled the front so you probably wouldn't recognize it. I know I saw another one recently, but I can't remember where. Highland Park? I got ours tonight in S.Pas.
  Wed. 9/5/18 10:57pm rw:

Hey Franco! Mostly we go to a place called Taqueria de Anda. There are a couple around here. Had a rice bean and cheese burrito from there today! There's also an El Faralito down the street. Excellent breakfast place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 10:57pm Funky16Corners:

@Doc - Her real name is Linda Tillery. She was the lead singer of a San FRancisco band called the Loading Zone. Why they 'rebranded' her like that I have no idea, but it was only for one album
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:01pm Franco Twinkie:

Was she the member of the Loading Zone that was knocked out at Altamont?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:01pm Funky16Corners:

I hadn't heard that story. Perhaps she was?
  Wed. 9/5/18 11:01pm rw:

Oh! And there's a place called... Los Gallos in Placentia. Amazing old school style place. Lots of old people. Pickup trucks in the parking lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:02pm doctorjazz:

I heard Richard Thompson at an all request, solo acoustic guitar show ,pull off And Your Bird Can Sing It was quite amazing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:03pm Funky16Corners:

I would have loved to hear that!
  Wed. 9/5/18 11:03pm rw:

F16C, these sets are more loungy than I had expected but we're digging it here!
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:03pm coelacanth∅:

when i bought revolver, as a teen, i didn't know to get the original version, as opposed to the bullshit american version (on capitalist records) - so there was no i'm only sleeping, no and your bird can sing, and no doctor robert - 3 of the best songs on revolver; so i didn't understand why people raved about the album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:04pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I remember when I first found out about the UK albums and I felt ripped off (and confused)
  Wed. 9/5/18 11:05pm rw:

docjazz, that sounds amazing. I can hear it in my head.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:07pm coelacanth∅:

Larry me too
  Wed. 9/5/18 11:08pm rw:

I never bought Beatles records. Every time I picked up one in the record store I would look at the song titles and hear every one of them clearly in my head so I didn't see a reason to shell out the cash and move on to something else.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:09pm Franco Twinkie:

I was in San Francisco with my family the week Revolver was released. So, on KYA, Got To Get You Into My Life was in heavy rotation with You Can't Hurry Love by The Supremes and You're Gonna Miss Me by The 13th Floor Elevators!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:10pm Funky16Corners:

@RW - I'm the same way. i have so deeply ingested the Beatles albums, that I can probably play them back in my head note for note
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:10pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - You're making me jealous!
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:14pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh yeah, the other big song in SF that summer was What's Become Of The Broken Hearted by Jimmy Ruffin. Those songs will be some of my memories on my death bed for sure.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:17pm coelacanth∅:

i feel like i profoundly know all the beatles albums, but i still love listening to them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:17pm Funky16Corners:

It's funny, a smuch time as I spend digging into the 60s (and earlier) my formative radio years were in the 70s, and I find myself lingering on the Sirius 70s channel in the car and experiencing some deep nostalgia, even with records that I'm not particularly attached to, simply because of the Proustian impact of them bringing moments of my youth back to me.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:18pm Franco Twinkie:

This is awesome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:18pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I love listening to them, too. I'm just not buying the ones I no longer have around.
  Wed. 9/5/18 11:18pm chresti:

My first Beatles was from the babysitter when she brought “I wanna hold your hand” with her. Later, when we moved to California, my big brother’s friend from next door , in Illinois, would send a pile of records every year starting in ‘66 or ‘67.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:19pm Erica:

Nostalgia does that to you Larry.

@Erica - It's strange but I think a combination of my own age, and the fact that my oldest son is the age I was in 1976, has unlocked a powerful wave of nostalgia/yearning in me recently. It was kind of unexpected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:21pm Funky16Corners:

Hey SBP! Yes indeed. Sadly passed away a few weeks ago.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:23pm Erica:

The thing about nostalgia is though, you can't feel it until you've experienced something before in the past. It isn't nostalgic if you're unfamiliar with something. Obvious but true. Better to learn things now before it's too late.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:24pm Funky16Corners:

I was an unhappy kid. I'm more nostalgic for youth itself than for anything I experienced
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:26pm Erica:

But how can you feel nostalgic about a time you were an unhappy kid?
  Wed. 9/5/18 11:26pm rw:

F16C, That's one of my favorite things about having kids, seeing them experience the world from a fresh perspective.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:27pm still b/p:

Funny to look back. Though I was a youth neither of initiative or optimism, from way up here now that seems a time of open possibilities.
Erica -- Never look for complete logic in nostalgia.
  Wed. 9/5/18 11:27pm rw:

This Junior Parker version is fucking amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:27pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I'm nostalgic for the feeling of being young, and naive and being able to get up without shouting at my knees for sucking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:27pm Funky16Corners:

@rw - Yeah, blew me away the first time I heard it
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:29pm Erica:

I feel that way too Larry but I certainly don't wish to reminisce about the bad times. They haunt my memory to this day.
  Wed. 9/5/18 11:30pm chresti:

Haunting track that was!
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:32pm coelacanth∅:

not that much music makes me feel nostalgic. i actually listened to it from about the age of 4, when my dad first put meet the beatles on the record player. so i've always thought of it - not just had it there.
meet the beatles is of course an exception. so is absolutely freeeeee by the mothers; and let it bleed. -and some radio hits...
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:33pm Jeff Ash:

Interesting that you should say that about the Sirius '70s channel. I find it unlistenable. Just heard too many dreadful songs too many times back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:34pm Funky16Corners:

The 70s is really where the divide between cool/unusual music and the pop charts opened very wide
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:35pm Funky16Corners:

Sorry 'bout that,,,
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:35pm coelacanth∅:

yeah for sure ...then just kept getting wider.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:36pm Funky16Corners:

I think I walked away from 70s mainstream pop for so long that it sounds somewhat refreshing these days
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:38pm Erica:

I don't have Sirius XM but my sister's husband has it in his car. He had Classic Vinyl on, which was the classic rock station back in November.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:39pm Franco Twinkie:

The music you were exposed to as a youngster has a better chance of sticking in your brain - the cement is still wet.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:39pm coelacanth∅:

i still don't want to hear that much of the radio music from the mid-seventies onward, but given the choice of 70s rock and pop, or any of the overwhelming majority of music made from the mid-80s until now, it's a no brainer. 70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:39pm Funky16Corners:

I mainly listen to 60s, 70s, Little Stevens Underground Garage, Soultown, and the classical stations
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:41pm coelacanth∅:

haha! sirius "classic vinyl" - in ultra-high-distortion mp3 sound!
  Wed. 9/5/18 11:42pm Dean:

Come the '70s, I started listening to medieval and Renaissance music, Western classical, what came to be known bizarrely as "world" music. Rock and pop were just more of the same. If you've heard Clemencic's traversal of Carmina Burana tunes, you realize rock/pop have deep histories.
  Wed. 9/5/18 11:42pm rw:

Man, I find so many compelling shows on WFMU I find it difficult to get too far away. Luckily I'm on the west coast so the late night shows are on during my prime time.
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:42pm Erica:

I didn't make up the station name sadly coel. And not all mp3s are distorted. Depends on the quality of the rip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 9/5/18 11:43pm Funky16Corners:

My Sirius listening is all in the car, always on trips too short to listen to a podcast
Avatar Wed. 9/5/18 11:44pm coelacanth∅:

i listen to a lot of new music; but almost nothing that is acceptable to "the mainstream audience".

no Franco, i know. some mp3s sound decent. that's never been my experience with sirius though. i'd rather listen to the motor.
  Wed. 9/5/18 11:45pm rw:

Speaking of Sirius, I'm going to need a new car soon. Not looking forward to it really. Do they all have video screens in the dashboard now?

Our newer car is a 2016 Toyota Sienna, and I remember getting into it at the dealer, and staring at the dashboard like a caveman when it lit up, and it was comparitively primitive to some of the newer set ups

Miracles by the Jefferson Starship will always be a good memory for me. It reminds me of been at the laundromat in San Francisco, and enjoying it! Probably the last time I had fun at a laundromat.

rw, the 1989 volvo 240 wagon doesn't! (and i'll bet you can see what's going on around yourself better than in a car with cameras)

Miracles reminds me of removing keys from all the used cars on a lot near closing hour while it played on the dealership PA.

I have a 1984 Volvo 240 DL wagon that we use to store trash in. I am very nostalgic about going camping in that car.

coel, 89 may be too old for me, but yeah, I was having that conversation with my daughter today about how people rely on the camera and don't think about actually looking!
