Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 10:11pm still b/p:

I usually can't name a favorite anything -- movie, color, food -- but for a year or two my favorite Aretha selection has been a TV performance of Say A Little Prayer from 10/9/70, not sure what show. Just a damn pleasure. Another clip of same song, same year, from Cliff Richard Show is also pretty good.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 10:12pm Funky16Corners:

@SBP - Among her many covers, that is especially economic and sublime.

Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 10:25pm Erica:

Yea it's sad that Aretha passed away. I posted a song by her that she sang with Elton John as a tribute to her called "Through the Storm".
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 10:25pm Funky16Corners:

I'm not 100% sure but I think it was recorded in church. I'll have to look.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 10:25pm Funky16Corners:

@Erica - I'm not familiar with that one. I'll look it up
  Wed. 8/22/18 10:25pm rw:

Yo! Franco T!

F16T, all the Aretha tributes I've heard have been incredible. I guess it's tough to go wrong, but still.
And holy cow, that WAS a hard left turn there!

Hey Larry, just curious, ever heard the Original Sinners? They had a single called "You'll Never Know". Very catchy mid-60s garage rock//pop-rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

That name isn't ringing any bells. I'll look for it.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 10:32pm Erica:

It's on Youtube.
  Wed. 8/22/18 10:32pm chresti:

Hey joe is so forlorn ! Great!
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 10:33pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh Yeah! This is the Shit! In the sixth grade(1966) Mr. Watkins asked the class what their favorite songs on the radio were. As you can expect lots of Beatles, Hermins Hermits ect. He said:"Franco?" I said Talk,Talk by the Music Machine. I got stares of non -comprehention and suspicion. This reaction would plague me my entire dismal career as a student. More later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 10:33pm Funky16Corners:

Yeah, I always suspected that Hendrix heard this version,
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 10:33pm Funky16Corners:

@Franco - That's great!

Give The Drummer Some Other.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 10:47pm Erica:

Wrong, sir. WRONG!
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 10:47pm Franco Twinkie:

A long time ago, my girl friend dumped me and moved up to the Southern Sierras to play in a county&western band. I drove up to see her shortly there after. One day she said "Lets go see my friend Rocky" (The band leader.) When we got to his house, his wife said he was out in the garage with some guy recording. We banged on the door and Rocky came out with his friend. He said "This is Sean Bonniwell." I blurted out: "I use to see you on Boss City!"(A TV dance show in L.A.) He said " You know, I invented punk rock" He was wearing flip-flops with socks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 10:48pm Funky16Corners:

That's cool. I was in touch with him years ago via a fanzine I was doing. He had become a big Christian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

@FRanco - Who was the host of Boss City? Was it Sam Riddle or was he just on Hollywood A Go Go?
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 10:51pm Franco Twinkie:

I know, Rocky said they recorded a bunch of song about Jesus.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 10:53pm Franco Twinkie:

Both. Hollywood A Go-Go morphed into Boss City.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 10:54pm Funky16Corners:

Ah, OK. I thought I had heard his name associated with both, though I don't think I've ever seen any Boss City clips.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 10:54pm Franco Twinkie:

BTW. The Fire Escape turned into The Seeds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 10:55pm Funky16Corners:

Really? I thought the Seeds were out first.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 10:58pm Erica:

He's probably referring to another band of the same name perhaps?
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 10:59pm Franco Twinkie:

Larry, is Super K a spin-off of K-tel, it's swell?
  Wed. 8/22/18 10:59pm rw:

There must be a comp with a bunch of these songs. Most seem SO familiar to me but I can't figure out from where. Couldn't have been the radio. I must have had a tape at some point. Maybe it was the Nuggets comp.
  Wed. 8/22/18 11:01pm chresti:

They are great songs!
  Wed. 8/22/18 11:03pm rw:

You're a madman, Larry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:03pm Funky16Corners:

@rw - There was a great Rhino comp of the Music Machine that came out in the 80s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:04pm Funky16Corners:

And Talk Talk was def on the original, Lenny Kaye compiled Nuggets

Liberace in a buckskin caftan
  Wed. 8/22/18 11:07pm rw:

That sounds familiar... maybe we had it at the radio station when I was in college. Maybe I've got the LP in my closet. Pretty sure I had a tape on rotation in my car though. Great stuff. Thanks for the set and the scholarly anecdotes!

Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:09pm Franco Twinkie:

Original Sound was the official record label for Cholos and Cholas in jr. high. How they bagged the Music Machine I'll never know. Art Laboe was a funny guy. He put out some early Frank Zappa records.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:10pm Jeff Ash:

I bought that Liberace record on your recommendation way back when on the Iron Leg blog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:11pm Funky16Corners:

@FRanco - I think Laboe got his start putting on R&B concerts in East LA.
  Wed. 8/22/18 11:11pm rw:

Ha! Jeff Ash. And?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:11pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - It's worth it for the couple of cool tunes and the Spooner Oldham involvement.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:12pm Franco Twinkie:

Yup, At The El Monte Legion Stadium.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:12pm Funky16Corners:

Didn't Zappa do a tine called 'Memories of El Monte' or something like that?
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:13pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes. Ray Collins sang the lead vocals.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:16pm Jeff Ash:

Larry's recommendations are usually right on. Liberace was all right, RW. Not that I'm ever going to pop for another Liberace record.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:17pm Franco Twinkie:

Go ride the music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:18pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Nobody "needs" a Liberace record, but if you have the time, a dollar (or less) and open ears, that's the one to buy.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:19pm Franco Twinkie:

Sounds like Liberace on piano. but I think it's Nicky Hopkins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:20pm Funky16Corners:

It is indeed Nicky!
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:21pm still b/p:

If I come across early Liberace albums in a thrift store stack, I'd consider buying one or two for the cover images.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:22pm Franco Twinkie:

I just pulled out The Tin Man Was Dreamer today. But I got distracted by Ella Fitzgerald.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:23pm Funky16Corners:

Ella will do that to you.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:35pm Franco Twinkie:

My enduring memory of Guinnevere was the day I got that record when I was 14 I had driven up into the foothills above La Verne in my uncle Johns Dodge Power Wagon to pick avocados in hazy winter light.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:36pm Funky16Corners:

That's a cool memory.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:37pm still b/p:

A judge in this area hauled a number of people in this week to answer for failure to report for jury duty. "Distracted by Ella" would get you an instant pass.

"Your honor, I was knee deep in Ornette Coleman albums and the freedom had me otherwise occupied"
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:41pm still b/p:

If you make it to the voir dire stage, are Ornette and Ella inclinations/fascinations going to assure you a seat or get you struck?
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:41pm Franco Twinkie:

You bet, BP! The very album I was listening to was Sunshine Of Your Love recorded live in 1969 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:43pm Franco Twinkie:

My dad use to cut school to go see Ella at the Million Dollar theater Downtown L.A. in the late 1940's.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:45pm Erica:

I bet he got caught too.
  Wed. 8/22/18 11:47pm rw:

My dad almost hit David Crosby in the parking lot at the Hollywood Bowl. I said, "Hey, there's David Crosby" And he started looking around saying, "Where?" I said, "He's right in front of you. Stop! You're going to hit him!"
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:48pm Franco Twinkie:

Yes he did! His solution to escaping the the truant officer was to join the air force!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:48pm Funky16Corners:

@rw - Now, the chances that the story was about almost punching Crosby...even odds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

Non-Deja Vu - bonus track...
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:50pm Jeff Ash:

This is one of my favorite Isley records.
  Wed. 8/22/18 11:50pm rw:

Ha! Not my dad. But maybe...
  Wed. 8/22/18 11:51pm rw:

Wow. This IS good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:52pm Funky16Corners:

@rw - I meant that Crosby might have been asking for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:52pm Funky16Corners:

@Jeff - Yeah the Isleys in the 70s is a real treasure trove of interesting stuff.
  Wed. 8/22/18 11:53pm rw:

Yes! I got that. But still, my dad was a pretty nice guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 8/22/18 11:54pm Funky16Corners:

I'm sure he was. Crosby on the other hand...kicked out of every band he ever joined, including his own solo projects...j/k
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:56pm Franco Twinkie:

The same girl friend that dumped me to hang around with violent crackers in the Sierras...Her parent lived down the street from David Crosby's father. One day we had coffee with him and it was Davy this,Davy that. He was really proud of his son. Floyd Crosby was no slouch, he was the DP on High Noon and my personal favorite, The Man with x-Ray Eyes with Ray Milland.
  Wed. 8/22/18 11:57pm rw:

My daughter was just talking about the Isley Bros. the other day. She was saying how she likes them but then she heard a song about young girls that creeps her out. I tried explaining that times were different but it's a tough argument to make to a young person these days. Especially my daughter who's kind of a hard-ass.
Avatar Wed. 8/22/18 11:57pm still b/p:

Forrmer flight attendant I know had a bunch of celebrity encounters. Crosby firmly reinforced his own rep.
