Your 1 year mark? Congrats! Bring on the sunshine pop. Suppose you don't mean Diamanda Galas, Univers Zero, or Killing Joke, ha!

Hi Franco!

Larry! You're one sharp customer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:08pm TDK60:

There's plenty of Sixties sun music I'm sure. Maybe lots from southern California. (Van Dyke parks played organ on "Fifth Dimension" by The Byrds. That's good enough for me...actually great enough.)
  Wed. 5/16/18 10:08pm Cal Zone!:

Great song, LG!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:08pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Cal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:08pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - Some night I'm going to do a bigblock of van Dyke Parks and related stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:09pm Little Danny:

Nino and April sure recorded some oddball 45s

Now, hey, how strung out were they, really?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:11pm Funky16Corners:

Not very, but they made some great music
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:12pm TDK60:

Interesting how vocal harmonies were more prevalent then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:12pm coelacanth∅:

happy anniversary!

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:13pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - vocal harmony is the throughline in this show
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:17pm TDK60:

We understand your statement, man. Bring on the platters...groovy!
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 10:19pm Franco Twinkie:

Speaking of one off singles. Van Dyke drew a picture of himself on a 45 of his for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:20pm Funky16Corners:

THAT is a prized possession right there!
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 10:22pm Franco Twinkie:

Dude is the shit. Lowell George called him the tail gunner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:23pm Funky16Corners:

And when you look at all the different styles he worked in it's kind of mindblowing
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:23pm Little Danny:

I had to look up the Don & the Goodtimes. Jack Nitzsche production! I knew there was something special going on
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:23pm TDK60:

If some Sunshine Pop Scholar shows up with arcane minutae, we'll just bliss them out with our shiny love beads and mojos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:23pm Funky16Corners:

Yes indeed! And a band like the New Colony Six that started out garage and went pop
  Wed. 5/16/18 10:24pm still b/p:

Last one kept reminding ding me if GL&P She’s Just My Style. In a rain(?) of sunshine pop, the what-sounds-like-what angles could get veryyy busy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:24pm Funky16Corners:

I'll take on all comers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:24pm Funky16Corners:

@SBP - It's a sea of influences!
  Wed. 5/16/18 10:27pm still b/p:

Accustomed to hearing Steve Lawrence’s version of Portrait. Interesting choice for popification.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:27pm Funky16Corners:

The OG was by English singer Matt Monro
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:28pm Funky16Corners:

So Steve was def in that ballpark
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:28pm Little Danny:

Whoa this Little Anthony. Is the rest of this album this sunshine-poppy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:30pm Funky16Corners:

It is for the most part with some lite soul stuff. It's a real surprise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:30pm northguineahills:

Got home right before the next storm outside. Hellos!
  Wed. 5/16/18 10:30pm still b/p:

Heard Matt’s often enough too in unusual playlists of couple local stations owned by one guy whose “hobby” is radio.. non commercial.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:30pm Funky16Corners:

Hey NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:30pm Funky16Corners:

@SBP - I actually saw Monro on an Ed Sullivan rerun a few weeks ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:32pm Funky16Corners:

You think they got the Mamas and Papas in Canada??
  Wed. 5/16/18 10:33pm Peter:

WOW! I remember singing this song in elementary school in Vancouver. Never heard this version before. Thank you!
  Wed. 5/16/18 10:33pm still b/p:

If I get started browsing old variety shows, it’s damn hard to stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:34pm northguineahills:

Awww, missed Van Dycke Parks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:35pm Funky16Corners:

@Peter - Was it written for the Canadian Centennial? The composer is some Canadian Dixieland trumpeter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:35pm TDK60:

Moms&Pops likely were an influence on a lot of bands, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:36pm Funky16Corners:

Just looked it up! 1967!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:38pm Funky16Corners:

I could do a whole show of just imitation Mamas and Papas stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:41pm TDK60:

A lot of these bands, with their voc. harmonies, if performing live, did so before stage monitors for musicians became common. Hence, tricky live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:42pm Funky16Corners:

Excellent point
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 10:45pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay, I think the kids are smoking weed now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:46pm Funky16Corners:

That's a young, pre-Rainbow Connection Paul Williams singing lead
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:46pm Funky16Corners:

And yes, some of this strays into the psychedelic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:47pm TDK60:

Of course, I'm no sunshine scholar but it seems all the pop and folk and psych got mixed up, surf too.
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 10:47pm Franco Twinkie:

Paul Williams sing through a Leslie Speaker? Yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:48pm Funky16Corners:

Yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:49pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - The Beach Boys sound plays a big part in this sound
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:49pm Parq:

Larry, has it really been a year? I remember how excited I was when you got the nod (I am a long time fan of the blogs) and the show has been everything I had expected and more. Happy anniversary and looking forward to much more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:49pm TDK60:

Yes Leslie speaker vocal, wonder who did it 1rst?! Plus, hear the electric sitar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:49pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Parq! thanks so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:50pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - Not sure, but this has to be fairly early
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:50pm Parq:

I am late on this (Mrs. Parq and I were having dinner), but what a joy to hear the Tokens' "Portrait of My Love". God, I remember loving that so much in its original release, and it all came back to me, hearing it tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:51pm TDK60:

yes...before Ian Anderson over in Angleland
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:51pm Funky16Corners:

It's such a good album, too
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:52pm Little Danny:

@TDK60: that seems like something the Beatles/George Martin might have championed early on, especially "Tomorrow Never Knows"
  Wed. 5/16/18 10:53pm chresti:

Is holy mackerel in response to I am the walrus?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:55pm Parq:

I think that Tokens single can fairly be regarded as the root (or at least an element of it) of my life-long love affair with harmony vocals.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:55pm TDK60:

Was that a leslie on "Tomorrow N.K."? Sounds different like a megaphone or cone-? Man that song, T.N.K. is one my tops. I recall exactly when/where I first heard it in '66. Lifechange! yet I digress...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:56pm Little Danny:

According to this Beatles nerdery site, it was: theproaudiofiles.com...
  Wed. 5/16/18 10:56pm still b/p:

Just looking yesterday at story of the man who did paintings for Aqualung cover. $1500 flat fee and never another nickel through decades of endless reuse and repurposing. Ian Anderson quite dickish in the matter, and maybe in general.
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 10:57pm Franco Twinkie:

Don't think so. However, George Harrison did employ a Leslie on Rubber Soul
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:57pm coelacanth∅:

tnk definitely a leslie speaker, and John singing upside-down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:57pm TDK60:

Little Danny, thanks, will look..
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:58pm Funky16Corners:

@SBP - That Aqualung story is a bummer. Ian Anderson sounds like a creep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:58pm TDK60:

and inside out, from downstream
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 10:59pm coelacanth∅:

according to Geoff Emerick singing through a leslie was his solution to John wanting to sound like he "was singing from a mountaintop".
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 10:59pm Franco Twinkie:

You think so Coela? have to dig that one out.
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 11:01pm Franco Twinkie:

John Cippolina plays through a Leslie on the first Quicksilver album
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:01pm TDK60:

I think it was common for artists to get paid a one-time fee with no subsequent nada -- may still be like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:02pm Little Danny:

@coel: Emerick really doesn't get the recognition he deserves!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:03pm TDK60:

..have to listen to T.N.K. again. Sure don't recall a leslie sound but maybe they tried to make it sound even different from that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:03pm Little Danny:

My fave guitar -> Leslie speaker recordings are those of the New Colony Six. Whom I believe Larry mentioned in passing earlier this eve
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:03pm coelacanth∅:

there's a photograph of Lennon hanging off a chair, upside-down, singing into a mic. some people say it's a hoax that it was tnk; but then, what the hell else?! either way he's singing upside-down!
...the leslie i take as fact, and i don't think anyone disputes this.
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 11:04pm Franco Twinkie:

Saw Garcia sing through a Leslie in '71.
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 11:05pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay Coelacanth, I stand corrected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:05pm coelacanth∅:

Danny i agree about Emerick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:06pm Funky16Corners:

Many years ago I was in a band with a guy who bought an old Leslie at a music store sidewalk sale, refurbished it and used it for his guitar
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:06pm chresti:

At first I thought they were doing Paperback Writer
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:06pm TDK60:

..learn a new thing some sunny day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:06pm Funky16Corners:

This is a Neil Diamond song!
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:07pm chresti:

I think Lennon was also underwater
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:08pm coelacanth∅:

paperback writer (& "rain") represents another stroke of genius on Geoff Emerick's part. (using an amplifier speaker in place of a microphone)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:09pm Parq:

In fairness to Ian A (who I've no doubt is a world-class, multiple-award-winning A-hole), one-shot payments for visual piecework was the order of the day in the 20th Century. What happened to the Aqualung guy is nothing compared to what happened to the creators of touchstone super-hero imagery. And $1500 is still better than the "think of the exposure you'll get" that many visual artists (and writers, for that matter) are offered for similar work nowadays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:09pm coelacanth∅:

chresti yes...with piranhas circling!
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 11:10pm Franco Twinkie:

Many years ago, My dad and I were driving down the street and I saw a Leslie in the parking lot of a church, I started screaming, dad was going"Wha!?!" We pulled over and threw it in the back of the truck. I Still have it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:11pm TDK60:

Yeah Franco T. -J. Garcia used one on Dead's 3d LP ('69) on long dark "What's Become of the Baby" -not sunshine pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:11pm Funky16Corners:

@Parq - Oh yeah. Piecework/for hire wasn't at all unusual. I was referring to Anderson's legalese response to the guys son
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 11:13pm Franco Twinkie:

"What's Become of the Baby": Nightmare Anti-Pop.
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:14pm still b/p:

Handshake deal = risk = regret.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:15pm coelacanth∅:

chresti - there was actually a song that John wanted to sound like he was under water for. i forget what song, but they put microphones in plastic bags and submerged them in glasses of water, not aware of the fact that they were phantom mics! later thankful they weren't all electrocuted. (i may not be remembering that exactly)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:15pm Little Danny:

Oh man I love, love, love the Follow Me soundtrack

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:18pm TDK60:

All night I'm thinkin' LA/So. Cal area feel. Kind of hard to get my mental images off that locale. But it was maybe sunny elsewhere too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:18pm Little Danny:

Yessir. Easily one of Stu's finest releases
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:19pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - Lots of New York stuff here too, but all roads lead back to LA
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:19pm Funky16Corners:

Sometimes, I take out the guitar and play the first several bars of the Mannix theme. On one string.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:27pm Funky16Corners:

I was digging Mannix reruns on Decades a while back. Great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:27pm Funky16Corners:

The Buffalo Springfield were on Mannix!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:27pm TDK60:

Is this mostly US stuff? Was there similar music in other countries? Australia? Brazil?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:27pm Little Danny:

Free Design are almost a subcategory unto themselves. Massive credit to them for being distinct in the world of psychedelic/sunshine pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:29pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - With the exception of Steff this is all US stuff. There was a lot of similarly inclined music in the UK and Europe and pretty much everywhere else, but not in the concentration that you get here
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:29pm still b/p:

He got punched or knocked out soooo many times, but I guess all TV PIs did. It’s quite a parade of patterned sports jackets too.

Nite Danny!
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:36pm chresti:

The harmony style makes me think of dance numbers on variety shows
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:36pm rw:

Ha! Thanks Franco. Just had a bowl of blueberries and whipped cream. Seemed to help the mood a little.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:36pm Funky16Corners:

@C - I have a kidney issue that requires placement of stents. They have to be swapped out periodically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:36pm coelacanth∅:

okay glad you're on the mend then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:37pm Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - There's a lot of crossover between mainstream pop and stuff like this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:37pm Funky16Corners:

@C - Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:37pm coelacanth∅:

cd malfunction happening, or transmission malfunction...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:38pm TDK60:

Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 11:38pm Franco Twinkie:

Fresh fruit everyday! Keeps your head from exploding.
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:38pm rw:

And hey coelacanth! Stream seemed to crash here too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:39pm Funky16Corners:

Am I back on?
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:39pm rw:

It's back now.
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:39pm cupcakejenny:

Hey Larry....you alive?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:39pm coelacanth∅:

i think we're good now
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:40pm Funky16Corners:

Oh shit, I don't thin it's me. It may be a problem with the stream
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:40pm coelacanth∅:

i can taste the sunshine - through the rain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:40pm TDK60:

No // Checked main fmu show = on...
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 11:40pm Franco Twinkie:

Intercontinental transmission fuck-up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:41pm coelacanth∅:

it's pretty quiet though
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:41pm rw:

Went to nothing, then to the regular drummer stream then back to Testify!
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:41pm cupcakejenny:

Oh whew. I don’t have to get up and do cpr on you
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:41pm Funky16Corners:

I think it burped at the station and disconnected me. I reconnected but it took a second.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:42pm Funky16Corners:

I will inform Doug in the AM
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:42pm TDK60:

>> back on...
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:42pm still b/p:

After all the layers and harmonies and studio flavors of the period, Rick’s sounding like subdued sunshine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:43pm coelacanth∅:

(it's quiet, but the levels had been all over the place already - due to mastering)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:44pm Funky16Corners:

@SBP - That Rick LP is really good. James Burton is all over it
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:44pm TDK60:

This was a big hit for Spanky A.O.G. Made me nostalgic then, still does.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:44pm coelacanth∅:

i always liked this song, and haven't heard it in many years for some stupid reason
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:45pm Funky16Corners:

Really one of the greatest 'sunshine' songs
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 11:45pm Franco Twinkie:

They used to be regulars on this show called "Boss City" back in the day.
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:45pm still b/p:

Absolutely always an extra nostalgia hit from this Spanky one — a real piece of period meringue pie and atmosphere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:47pm Funky16Corners:

Spanky and Our Gang's albums are exceptional. A really interesting, underrated group
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:47pm coelacanth∅:

and the cake...2-hit wonder? or am i ill-informed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:50pm Funky16Corners:

I didn't know they had any hits
Avatar Wed. 5/16/18 11:52pm Franco Twinkie:

As soon as Tesstify! is over I am going out into the street to look for something with a lot of sugar on top of it. The needle on my "Syrup Meter" is in the black...and it need to be in the red.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:52pm TDK60:

F16C - will have to listen to a Spanky album, may have heard one long ago but not in recent ages.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:52pm Funky16Corners:

@TDK60 - They are fairly cheap and easy to find. Well worth picking up
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:56pm TDK60:

Thanks for the tunes, later.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:57pm coelacanth∅:

Larry my info comes from someone i knew who really liked them and i thought she said these 2 songs were the cake's 2 hits (baby that's me & "i know") but maybe i misunderstood and these were just her favorites.
  Wed. 5/16/18 11:59pm chresti:

Thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 5/16/18 11:59pm coelacanth∅:

Franco i'd say try an archive of Jeff Mullen's "noise and syrup" show, but...it's a different kind of syrup!
  Thu. 5/17/18 12:00am chresti:

Deeper sunshine pop pockets
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 5/17/18 12:00am coelacanth∅:

Thanks Larry! Great program

good night sunshine people
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 5/17/18 12:00am Funky16Corners:

@C - It's possible they were regional hits on the West Coast. I will investigate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 5/17/18 12:00am Funky16Corners:

Thanks guys!
Avatar Thu. 5/17/18 12:00am Franco Twinkie:

Thanks Coelacanthe. I will look into it. Good night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 5/17/18 12:01am Funky16Corners:

@Chresti - Sunshine pop pockets, better than Hot Pockets!
  Thu. 5/17/18 12:01am still b/p:

Anita notwithstanding, missing this show woulda been a day without sunshine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 5/17/18 12:01am Funky16Corners:

Thanks SBP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 5/17/18 12:02am coelacanth∅:
