Nice set, Joe!
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:11am N.A.R.D.:

The opener of this song reminds me of Mario getting a star in the original Super Mario Bros.

Nice Joe..very nice. Barock'n'Roll!

There's Gonna Be a Storm CD is hard to find.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:16am pantz:

There needs to be a harpsichord revival. The Decembrists might be the only mainstream band that would feature one.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:16am Linda Lee:

actually prefer Marianne's earlier voice ~ though i loved Broken English much as anyone.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:17am Linda Lee:

she's always been flat though.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:17am The Oscar:

My girlfriend and I have agreed that, if we ever become extravagantly wealthy, a harpsichord will be among our first purchases.

I love how you shoot me Claudine.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:20am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe from sweltering UK.

Lincoln Mayorga played piano on Phil Och's A&M albums. I nearly bought one of his solo albums on import in the early Seventies but it was too pricey for a gamble on the content.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:21am Linda Lee:

sweltering UK! gosh!
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:21am Brian in UK:

Marianne Faithful was never "flat".

i was waitin for that one. :-D

Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:27am crateslinger:

@N.A.R.D. - no I have not seen "1408", but I just scanned the wikipedia page and something about, "We've only just begun". Is it a movie worth checking out? I usually hate most movies where anything happens.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:27am Linda Lee:

i'm with you on those, crateslinger :-D
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:28am N.A.R.D.:

It's mostly forgettable, crateslinger, but the whole thing was that the guy keeps waking up to the Carpenters on the radio and finding out he hasn't left the hotel room, even though he thinks he has.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:28am Brian in UK:

@crateslinger funny, my daughter always comments that I like films where nothing happens.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:29am Linda Lee:

they're heavenly. ;-)
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:30am The Oscar:

One of my favorite Addams Family episodes is the one where they break and need to replace Lurch's harpsichord. In a great moment of bonkers plotting, the second act of the episode has them BUILD A HARPSICHORD, then continue with the episode.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:30am N.A.R.D.:

His hearing that song was what triggered the reset in his time/location, so your comment that your life has been filled with the Carpenters lately made me think of it
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:30am Linda Lee:

actually like music where nothing happens either, me.
or it explodes.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:32am N.A.R.D.:

@The Oscar, here's instructions on how to build one if you have a great deal of woodworking experience and 300 hours to spare for it: www.johnsankey.ca...
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:32am Linda Lee:

none of this verse-chorus-verse-chorus-reprise stuff for me. no sir.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:32am V Priceless:

hiya Joe!
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:32am crateslinger:

@N.A.R.D. - sounds pretty creepy - kind of how I'm feeling about this, but the main song I keep running into is actually "Yesterday Once More."
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:33am Rob (Jerzcity):

Speaking of synchronicity - 1408 came up a bunch of times yesterday.
Tho we were playing a horror movie trivia game....
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:33am crateslinger:

Seems like "Yesterday Once More" would have been a better pick for the movie.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:33am Linda Lee:

that you, Matt?
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:34am themutante:

Who else is twisting their nipples right now?
  Mon. 5/7/18 9:34am Walt:

I think the Bill Snyder song features a tack piano (possibly sped up) rather than a harpsichord), though.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:34am steveo:

Sneaky way to get rickrolled. (Good morning!)
  Mon. 5/7/18 9:34am Brendan:

Quittin just aint my schtick
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:34am N.A.R.D.:

I think that would've worked well too, but I can see why they would have "It's Only Just Begun" to be the line to take him back to the beginning as well
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:34am Linda Lee:

put down that mic, Matty!
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:35am annie:

barry white.... sigh
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:35am themutante:

Chubby Checka those nips!
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:35am The Oscar:

@crateslinger That's actually funny-- a couple of years ago I was in a Chinese restaurant where they were playing a muzak version of "Yesterday Once More," but I couldn't place the tune. It came to me a couple months later, when I heard the original playing at a different Chinese restaurant.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:35am Joe McG:

@Walt: You got me, Walt. Couldn't resist the title, though.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:35am pantz:

Baby-making music...
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:37am Linda Lee:

lick the lips, touch the nips.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:38am themutante:

Hehehe @LL.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:38am crateslinger:

I think the first time I heard it recently it was a cover on WFMU like maybe on Friday or Thursday - anybody remember? Then I heard it over the weekend, and was humming it this morning. Now we've got another cover of another song. I guess it's just WFMU is playing Carpenter's covers. Probably something to do with the record fair.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:38am crateslinger:

Either that or I'm going to start seeing dead people.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:39am crateslinger:

PBS sometimes plays a nice Carpenters doc during fund raising.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:40am themutante:

The irony of my actions to this song are out there. I'm pushing my freezing beers against my nipples, twisting them, and just noticed I'm wearing a Doug Stanhope t-shirt that says 'Abortion is Green.'
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:41am themutante:

Maybe not irony.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:41am Linda Lee:

a fine way to start the day, mutante.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:41am Linda Lee:

makes sense to me!
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:42am themutante:

14.41 here, @LL. But, aye... not too shabby!
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:42am Linda Lee:

a fine way to start my day, then. :-D
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:42am themutante:

Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:42am pantz:

Your bed music starts out kinda like Supergrass' Coffee In The Pot, @Joe
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:44am Roberto:

I actually took harpsichord lessons in college. Super useful when job searching!
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:45am themutante:

Hahahaha @Roberto! Hilarious. I just guffawed!
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:45am Ken From Hyde Park:

Lurch played a mean harpsichord.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:46am Linda Lee:

they're on the moon, Joe! they're stone gon'.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:49am themutante:

Love the Fonal stuff.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:49am steveo:

good thing you didn't start with the Finnish

@tadpoles: Ha! @Brian: I want to hear that!
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:53am themutante:

Yeah, this is not Fonal. Fonal do great freak-folk stuff.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:53am Dominick:

A good kick in the butt this is!
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:54am steveo:

Itzall, thanks but those are actually hand claps
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:55am karlward:

Oh man, this Finnish disco is blowing my Texan mind. Hearing this as a child would have resulted in an entirely different life outcome. But what will happen now that I've heard it as an adult?
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:59am N.A.R.D.:

@The Oscar and @pantz have sent me down a harpsichord shopping rabbit hole...
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 9:59am N.A.R.D.:

I've just spent the last 30 minutes shopping for harpsichords instead of doing actual work
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:00am themutante:

That last track sounded a little like 'Waiting For the Axe to Fall' by Gil Scott-heron
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:00am themutante:

Some bits, at least.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:02am themutante:

Feeling this Finnish stuff.

Blue skies over the isthmus today, and here I am without my cyanometer.

  Mon. 5/7/18 10:03am Brendan:

Or the guy in Opeth
  Mon. 5/7/18 10:04am Avid listener:

Hi Joe, super show, as always. Just wanted to ask if the Sachiko Kanenobu thing you mentioned during the marathon is still happening.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:05am Joe McG:

@karl: I think you might implode! @Brendan: Ha ha. @Avid: Yes, next week! I'll talk about that a bit later.
  Mon. 5/7/18 10:06am Avid listener:

Oh fantastic! Thanks!
  Mon. 5/7/18 10:08am Brendan:

I could listen to Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, forever. This is a stellar version.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:12am themutante:

Did you just play a set of Finnish bands and chose not to play Es, Paavoharju, Islaja, Kemialliset Ystävät et al. Sake, man.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:12am Krys O.:

I love Ewan MacColl's and Roberta Flack's different intentions virtually the same.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:13am Joe McG:

@themutante: I wasn't really doing a whole set, just a taste. I could do a whole show of Finnish music. In fact, I'll bet you Gary Sullivan already has!
  Mon. 5/7/18 10:13am Avid listener:

That Offa Rex had a distinct Annie Briggs feel to it. Which, of course, is a good thing.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:14am karlward:

We are currently inside the credits of a David Lynch piece. Send help. Preferably in the form of some large molded bright blue or red box.

  Mon. 5/7/18 10:39am Walt:

The music for Aki Kaurismäki's movie "The Match Factory Girl" is all Finnish 60s style surf, rock, and rockabilly. The movie is so dryly humourless that it's actually hilarious (the desired effect, I think).
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:39am Rev. Turnip Druid:

holy crap!
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:41am Joe McG:

Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:46am Itzall Ablurr:

That was Jim Jarmusch.
  Mon. 5/7/18 10:47am Walt:

@Brian in UK: I believe you're thinking of "Mystery Train" by director Jim Jarmusch which did feature those two.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:47am frozen_peas:

this song is so good!!

Snares sounded better in the early 1970s.
Avatar Mon. 5/7/18 10:56am βrian:

Back then, snares were made of metal, not just electrons.

Man, that song always improves my mood. I have a specific memory of listening to the Harper's Bizarre version on the way home from school, when I took a wrong turn because I was too busy singing along with the volume all the way up.

hi. writer NHornby reviewed that recent LOUVIN brothers bio (?) and he writes how they'd listen to music at night, but didn't wanna wake daddy (bec he'd beat them).
this is how: "take a couple of broom straws, put them between your teeth, and use them as styli, and the music goes straight into your skull". huh?

Warner Brothers put out a great three CD box set in the mid '90's called "From Where I Stand- The Black Experience In Country Music". Also worth checking out is a mash up of "Sweet Jane- Wichi Tai To" on an album called "The Farrago Sessions" by Michael Stanley.
