she was actually convicted of negligent homicide and given 30 days in jail. she got to pick the 30 days and just went in on weekends. she then went on vacation with her lawyer who was married at the time and she married him after his divorce.

Carmichael:

Here you go, Dale: "Longet has never performed again after the criminal trial, and the Sabich family initiated civil proceedings to sue Longet. The case was eventually settled out of court for a large monetary settlement, with the proviso that Longet never tell or write about her story. They also demanded that Claudine withdraw from public circulation her recording of "Bang Bang, My Baby Shot Me Down."

The false impression that Spider Sabich was actually shot while skiing may have begun with a Saturday Night Live sketch that appeared shortly after the murder.

Isn't that how Sonny Bono died? There's actually a touching little memorial to him in NW D.C.

And ironically, the song's writer Sonny Bono died on the ski slopes.

This Longet thing may be one of those things where fiction has become remembered as fact. The first installment of SNL include a bit called the "Claudine Longet Downhill Invitational" in which stock footage of skiers beefing was melded with gunshot Foley cues to suggest that each contestant was being gunned down in mid-schuss. I strongly suspect that's why so many people "remember" that Spider departed this world in that manner.

The Longet trial was quite weird... the jurors seemed to fall for her beauty and gentle manner and thus not think her capable of the crime she committed. I read some newspaper reports from the time, and there was this attitude that she was being treated unfairly because of being a celebrity - when her fame and money completely privileged her here.
