My wife went to the DC march, but I'm still stuck down here in FL waiting to see if any of these job leads will start.

She had a blast, but said it was suffocatingly crowded, and couldn't hear any of the speakers due to the lack of PAs.
  3:38pm
modchick65:

When I was in 7th & 8th grade, there was a huge initiative (among schoolchildren) to raise money for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. We sold these chocolate Statues of Liberty, and I still remember the poem (we had to memorize it). I can see the Statue of Liberty from my apartment and I visited Ellis Island, and it makes me happy to think that all those chocolate statues of liberty we sold went towards their present state.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

thats true ngh, at a certain point we all started chanting "LET US MARCH!" because we were all packed in there listening to speakers whose words we couldn't make out
  3:40pm
modchick65:

@Bronwyn... we must have been close to each other. My friends and I were at the side of the stage, and we couldn't move and were stuck there for 5 hours. They kept bringing speakers out who had a variation on the same 3 speeches, and we were like, "OMG. LET US MARCH." I was definitely joining in those chants!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

yeah i was by the porta potties at one point and people were crushed up against them and others were trapped inside them, because they wouldn't let us move so we could listen to people say things we already knew we all agreed with otherwise we wouldn't be there. the actual marching part was great though.
Avatar 3:42pm
Cecile:

Bronwyn, you might want to post about that on social media. I know that some people have complained that the chanting was disrespectful to the speakers, but if you could not hear them at all, it makes perfect sense. Maybe they can have better sound in future marches.
Avatar 3:44pm
Cecile:

and modchick too.
Avatar 3:44pm
northguineahills:

@Bronwyn: Yeah, she said they were in that chant. By 3 they slipped out to find a bathroom, and by the time they got back, finally, the place they were at started to moved. Her and her friends were wiped out by the time they finished. Yet, they found enough energy for karaoke afterwards (which is odd as she usually shies away from that).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

I did post about it Cecile, but no one cared (ha)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm

And it's not just that we couldn't hear them. It was getting dangerous. We had to move because I personally was having trouble breathing and there were kids and 90-year-olds in there. Amazing cause and event but not really well organized.

My daughter went to dc on the NOW bus from NYC. She took a picture of John Kerry walking his dog. She got home late and slept in. Said it was like standing in a huge crowd for five hours.
Avatar 3:47pm
Cecile:

I did hear that there were some big logistical issues.
  3:47pm
modchick65:

The problem was that the speakers were all directed down the street, but there was a huge area next to the stage and behind the stage where people were standing (and there were no speakers in that direction). As for disrespectful, I mean... whatever. We had literally been standing there for 5 hours and could not move. My feet were killing me, my back was killing me, and it was beyond claustrophobic at that point. It was waaaaaaaay too long, and I'm sure others were feeling that, too. It was most likely one of those situations where every womens organization asks if they can speak, the organizers don't want to say no, and then they end up all saying the same thing. There was too much repetition in the speeches (I've heard that from a lot of people). It was just too long to be standing there. Way too long.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
Stevel:

My daughter lives in DC and took part with friends who came from out of town. No serious complaints from their experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm

Dad on Women's March in NYC (his first protest since 1970): "It was a zoo, but what do you expect with 400,000 people?" It's always a zoo. 4,000, 400 or 40, you show up a protest & no one has any idea what's going on. This is a good thing, it's the most basic form of democracy: "Let's agree to all walk in the same direction". We need the practice.

The London march was so huge, it took about an hour to walk 100 metres. After three hours we made it out of Grosvenor Square, where the US embassy is, by which time the speeches had already started – and probably finished – in Trafalgar Square. Didn't really matter though.

The Chicago march became a rally in Grant Park (?). I heard the DC march organizers chose not to pursue an actual march, as there were so many people.

In the 80's Arnold Rypens had an originals programma in Belgium once a month on Saturday evening from 10 to 12. That was the first programma for which I stayed at home (SBB is the second). I used to record the show on tape and save the songs I wanted to keep on Originals-tapes. I still have dozens of them.

OK, back from luncheon. About 25,000 marchers in Sacramento, including my wife and daughters. Thoroughly pissed off the right wing rednecks, who started whining worse than they have for the last 8 years. One of these primo assholes owns a local brewery (google "12 Rounds"), and someone took all his posts and put them on his business home page. It's naturally gone viral, and most of his suppliers, business connections and customers have evaporated. I'm enjoying this particular soap opera.
