  Thu. 6/26/14 9:13pm P-90:

@ Dominick: Cool link, thanks, the Fleischers are woefully underrated. The article says about Bimbo and Betty: "Yes, Betty Boop dated a dog." they missed the little-known truth about Betty Boop: she was originally drawn as a canine herself, she looked almost the same in her very first few appearances, but with droopy, hound-dog ears.

Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 9:45pm Matt from Springfield:

"Java"!
By NyooAwlins man Allen Toussaint, in tribute to his native city's coffee. I saw him @ this year's JazzFest! Nearly 80 and still going quite strong!

And Al Hirt, easy listening fave of the early 60s, my grandparents were fans of his stuff.

@P-90: Whaa?! The "Watusi"??! ... ;)
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 9:46pm listener james from westwood:

IIRC the Al Hirt version was used over the closing credits of a British kids' show called "Vision On" or something like that.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 9:47pm Stevel:

Al Hirt was often heard in my house, growing up. Dad played the trumpet in a swing band, post WWII.

By coincidence, my dad, the trumpet player and barbershopper, would have loved tonight's show. No, he might not have enjoyed ALL NZ presentations.

Also by coincidence, his birthday was three days ago. He's been gone for about 13 years. This is a nice way to include him in my evening.

He loved encouraging people to sing and he loved listening to wonderful voices as well. Lots of wonderful voices here tonight, including our fair DJ. Thanks.

Amanda - Terrific show and great music. You should be on FMU every week!
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:10pm Matt from Springfield:

Splendid coincidence Stevel! Glad that hearing the good times reminds you of your Dad.
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:11pm Matt from Springfield:

@Nick Caputo: She is! On WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio webstream, Wednesdays at noon. I can't tune in live like I used to, but every week brings 2 hours of new Archives!
  Thu. 6/26/14 11:13pm Nick Caputo:

Thanks for the info, Matt. I'll check it out!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 11:14pm Stevel:

Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh man !! We had this tune on a 4-song B.Splits E.P.; this is deep roots!!...
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 11:21pm Stevel:

Trying to remember if the BS record was purchased or came off of a cereal box. Perhaps that was The Archies.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 11:22pm Stevel:

Wow. When Amanda dials in...
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- right Stevel ! - but this one had a garish paisley sleeve !!...
  Thu. 6/26/14 11:22pm Marc:

I bought that record at the WFMU Record Fair.
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:23pm Parq:

This Duprees song always makes me feel like I should be slow-dancing in a ballroom, maybe with a mirror ball.
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...cereal top coupons, I think !...
  Thu. 6/26/14 11:23pm rw:

checking in from the ether... Enjoying the show tonight. Thank you Amanda! (I think I have that Banana Splits record from when I was a kid. Probably sent in some cereal box tops and a couple $ for it.)
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 11:23pm Stevel:

RRN63:Yes. I can see it. Probably wore through the grooves on that one, especially using our Wards record player.
  Thu. 6/26/14 11:23pm P-90:

@ RevRab & Stevel: I was just about to ask Reverend Rabbit where that BS ep came from...through the mail from a cereal box or comic book offer is entirely possible
Thu. 6/26/14 11:23pm the man on page 602:

Banana Splits! Mailed in 4, I think, Kellogg's box tops for the 2 singles
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:24pm Matt from Springfield:

Cherry People!! Wow, what a sunshiney pop record--this is heavily Pigeon territory!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 11:24pm Stevel:

Coupons! That's it. Dear God, I DO have a memory. Pieces at least.
  Thu. 6/26/14 11:25pm P-90:

OK, it WAS probably a boxtop offer
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:28pm Matt from Springfield:

Simpsons Time!! :D
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Also had 'I Enjoy Being a Boy (in Love w/ You)'...other two? B.Splits theme?? ...Two 45s you say - ?!?...
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:28pm Parq:

There is an alternate universe in which Chuck Berry is on cereal boxes. (Just close your eyes and picture it.)
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:30pm Matt from Springfield:

The *first* appearance of the BiMonSciFiCon? That's made appearances in several more episodes over the years.

Ooooh! Homer as Mayor Quimby's bodyguard! That is a GOOD'UN!
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:30pm steve:

Bi Mon Sci Fi Con! now there's some good Simpsons trivia.
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:31pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The Springfield Arena usually has something dire going on the next day. Fumigating for vermin or something.
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:32pm Matt from Springfield:

"You promised me dog, or better!!!"
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:32pm Matt from Springfield:

@Ken HP: It's not a good convention, UNLESS they fumigate it or fire hose it off the next day!
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:33pm Matt from Springfield:

"Luke Be A Jedi Tonight!" :D

"That's MY picture next to the pepper steak, and don't you forget it!"

Mark Hamill has a great sense of humor. He voiced several scenes in "Robt Chicken Star Wars" and played himself in a "Freakazoid" short involving a character called -- of course -- Fanboy.
  Thu. 6/26/14 11:38pm D-Lux:

Nice, nice.
  Thu. 6/26/14 11:38pm P-90:

@DJ Amanda: Have you ever discussed The Simpsons episode "Flaming Moe's"?
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:38pm Amanda:

Nope, not yet!
  Thu. 6/26/14 11:39pm D-Lux:

Listen to the music
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Cool that you had a didgeridoo for the talkover music.
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Barry White - en.wikipedia.org... :
...'He also wrote "Doin' the Banana Split" for TV bubblegum act The Banana Splits in 1968.[9]'...
- So him being in one of the suits probably an urban myth, we may presume...
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:41pm Matt from Springfield:

I wasn't aware that was an Australian Simpsons theme--I thought it was a modern orchestral arrangement or something, but now I notice the didgeridoo and the somewhat Celtic violin.
  Thu. 6/26/14 11:42pm D-Lux:

Right-on.
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:42pm Matt from Springfield:

(deep) You're my first, my last, my BANANA SPLIT, baby...
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:43pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow! A Vicki Lawrence single not related to gunshots, murder, night, lights going out, or Georgia! FTW!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 11:44pm Stevel:

I have a dog named Barry White. I'm sure that fits in somewhere.

No murder for Vicki. Just the suggestion of prostitution.
  Thu. 6/26/14 11:44pm P-90:

@Matt: she's a damn good singer in addition to her other talents
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 11:45pm coelacanth:

@Stevel: "The dime's for a dance only! But...let's say we go someplace less crowded, then we can talk, 'kay?"
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:46pm Amanda:

That's right! Mine is definitely one of those EPs. (Though I didn't have to send away for them from a Kellogg's box.)
Avatar    Thu. 6/26/14 11:48pm Matt from Springfield:

"Amy - Amy - Amy Grant!"
When she gets home from church, she takes off her pants. That's what I like, about Amy Grant! And she plays her Barry - Barry - Barry - Barry White! :)

Sweet dreamels, Stevel
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 11:53pm coelacanth:

i certainly would've tried to get my mother to buy those cereals if i'd have known about a banana splits mail offer. I did have a bobby sherman song, cut off the cereal box itself.
...My mom rarely bought very sweet cereals.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 11:56pm coelacanth:

...& we only had cold cereal on saturday mornings, so it would've taken a while to get those box tops together.
  Thu. 6/26/14 11:56pm D-Lux:

Pure beauty.

I was lent Jimmy Webb's book where he described the song writing process he had. I only finished half of it because it was kind of boring...
