That movie was actually on network tv the other night and I saw about 15 minutes of it .... the most I've ever seen of it
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 7:06pm ndbob:

I saw it when it came out - probably pretty dated now
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 7:07pm Gary:

Yes, it was kind of uncomfortable to watch, and not exactly because of the subject matter
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 7:07pm Amanda:

Let me guess -- was it on "Movies!"?

Nothing to do with nothing here, but found this and thought it interesting, if anyone wants to see. It's photos from slaves in Brazil through the 1860 to the 1880. Very interesting

Traditionally eaten at Italian weddings, I guess -- maybe a Tuscan thing. It has small meatballs, pasta and white beans in it.
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:20pm Gary:

Jake!!!!!! Great! We're all great, I think
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:22pm JakeGould:

Well, I had a sick day from work. So hey. I cleaned the bathtub & that was an great thing!
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:23pm Holly in NC:

Re wedding soup: Greens & wee meatballs, usually also pasta or other things. yum yum yum

"“Wedding soup” came about through a [n Italian-American] misinterpretation of the Italian words “minestra maritata” which means “married soup”. While it has the word “married” in it the name does not refer to literal marriage but rather a figurative one involving the ingredients in the soup. In other words, the edible delights go so well together that it was known as “married soup”. Over the years the meaning was construed to be associated with marriage and renamed “wedding soup”.
  Wed. 4/16/14 8:23pm doca:

@pss: sounds good, never tried putting meatballs AND white beans in pasta
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:23pm Holly in NC:

Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:27pm carol:

oh - gary - the cheese. ok i'm actually really partial to nacho cheese sauce/dip so there was that. but also a mexican blend pre shredded cheese that i usually dont buy but i got it at my local teeny store and that's pretty much all they had. but it turned out really good!
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:28pm Gary:

I've recently gotten into the Mexican cheese here
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:29pm JakeGould:

Today was great because I also had a yogurt.
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:29pm carol:

the blend action is nice for nachos i must say
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:30pm Gary:

I had guanabana yogurt, Jake ... kind of smellier than I should have eaten in an office, but delish
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:32pm listener james from westwood:

There is a Mexican bodega within walking distance. I should see if they have queso blanco.
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:35pm JakeGould:

Gary, just eating one yogurt a week for me is a big deal. The idea I had 3 this past month is a massive personal best.
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:37pm hyde:

i heard a great interview on a food podcast awhile ago about someone opening an artisanal cheese shop in mexico city for local cheeses. that sure sounded promising.
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:38pm cosmic matrix:

hi everybody! i just wandered in here. never been before! nice place. great set. i'm attempting to make myself some chicken noodle soup, but i have some kind of sinus-headache-belly-ache sort-of-thing. having to vaporize to stimulate my appetite. whee!
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:38pm carol:

i'd love to get the unknown singer as well gary :)
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:40pm Gary:

Cosmic!!!!!
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:40pm Holly in NC:

@pss - I also love Turkish wedding soup, which in my world = a garlickly, coriandery red lentil soup finished with a silly amount of mint butter (I got the recipe from a hippie health food store eons ago - now swallowed by the great Whole Foods maw ). Anyway, seems that in reality Turkish wedding soup = a flour-thickened lamb or mutton soup. Hm.
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:43pm Gary:

I will "blend action" it to you, carol, perforce!
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:43pm Holly in NC:

The Mexican market closest to me makes 3 kinds of cremas and several varities of cheeses, including homemade string cheese which is scary cheap & addictive, perfect for babysitting. The cremas are dangerous.....
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:45pm carol:

blend action is the best!!!
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 8:45pm pacific standard simon:

I'll look it up, Holly. All those ingredients are aces with me.

I still need to play with my quart of beef tallow, I haven't yet been able to borrow a deep fry thermometer.

@carol - Isn't it great? Oh now I want some. Dinner reality = grazing on salami, coppa, chopped chicken liver, arugula and canned salmon aka cleaning out fridge before things go bad.

It was the most popular track on the show, too! Now I'll have to play some Calle 13 on my Indonesian Blow Out Show to make up for it.

Yeeeeowch. Seems like it's true. Any one part of that story is horrible.

Holly, she seems to be taking it well -- must be the baked doggie treats from work.
Avatar Wed. 4/16/14 9:26pm pacific standard simon:

I can't stop playing El Chingon's version of Malageña Salerosa, and singing along. Which is a little dicey, since my Spanish is generally limited to cussing.

I NEED a cone for the darn cat who is my avatar. She (Bitty) was obsessively licking herself this morning, so I gently nudged her away from my legs as she was driving me nuts. So she glared, took 1 step and hairballed on my bed and Will Friedwald's "Jazz Singing".

Now the little monster is curled up in my lap, purring, trying to climb on the keyboard of course.
