Fave Herbie Mann LP is "Stone Flute." Favorite Herbie LP cover is, of course, "Push Push." That one rivals the Orleans cover for shirtless audacity and hilarity. Oh yes, and Derek and Lon Van Eaton on Apple. THese are my observations and opinions. More to follow. Good afternoon Duane. Marvelous flow so far. Flomax!

Have any of you read the blog "My Husband's Stupid Record Collection"? There seems to be some current hype about it on the facespace/blogosphere. If so, what are your thoughts about it?
Avatar 12:40pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

I'm going to an AIGA/NY talk tonight by a photographer who's project has been photographing obsessive record collectors...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Mike East:

@tim - I glanced at it. My initial impression is that I like the idea of going through your spouse's record collection, but I didn't really like how condescending she was being.
Bonus points for having a Matt Farley song about her, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm
probablyjohn:

I have, my thoughts are that there's not much of anything there to have thoughts about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm

My thought is record collectors are surprisingly thin-skinned about that blog.

Cecile:

You all should google "Detroit children's choir sings Happy." I see at least three future stars in the lineup
  12:49pm
Cecile:

I used to like the site Record Weirdo. The collectors made fun of themselves
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
tim from champaign:

I like your thinking, probablyjohn.

Mike, I initially liked the idea too. I also liked that the author listened with a fairly open mind (like with the Ayler record). After a bit, I started to wonder if the author was being disingenuous. She stated that she's a writer and librarian yet (for example) she doesn't know the term au pairs, has no context to the cover image of the Au Pairs album or calls a gatefold jacket "open-y". Hmmmm.....
  12:50pm
Cecile:

She says it's a joke.
Avatar 12:51pm
Jshatan:

I checked out that blog - her persona (which I have heard is considered "adorkable") is very tough to take. She just seems like someone with too much time on her hands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm
tim from champaign:

OK, that makes sense now, Cecile.
Avatar 12:54pm
Duane:

Hey Guys! I personally think that it is kinda harmless. It's slightly to indie for its own good, but i've dated plenty of women who kind of had that kind of attitude about record collecting..not so much shaming, but wondering why records. Most of them never grew up with music in the house :)

Osibisa and Mandrill are great afro-funk bands. I'd say that Osibisa was a bit closer to Assagai than Mandrill. Mandrill is closer to Kool & the Gang than all of those bands.
Robyn: Yeah I heard it was good..although mixed to negative feelings about SXSW this year than i've heard in awhile..when the Wall Street Journal say's its to "markety"..the shark is jumped!
Avatar 2:23pm

Mandrill - from darkest Brooklyn. Good bit of the second line in their sound. Plays well with the Meters, for example. Everyone should at least have their greatest hits. Monstrous live, too, according the bootleg I have.
