Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 12:25pm Tim 07030:

I was at Boogarins last night and left after they finished, figuring there was no way headliners could possibly compete. Not to mention the trip back to Hoboken loomed.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 12:26pm MD:

That song was cooool!!~!!!!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 12:28pm tim from champaign:

Sounds like Boogarins slayed last night. They completely won me over on Joe's show yesterday. They should release that recording. It sounded so good.

Duane Train !
hello beautiful people :)
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 12:43pm robyn:

haha! i have played this when my friends' drama has gotten to be too much once or twice...
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 12:43pm tim from champaign:

Windsor techno is great too. I'm not sure but I'm guessing Detroit techno came first. I also imagine it was all part of the same scene. Radio bleeding over the Detroit River and easy border crossings back then.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 12:44pm kirk from beer city usa:

hey everyone! just checking in to say that I have this Grace Jones 12" single, and this side sure beats the other side, which is a Joy Divsion cover. You'd think it's good, but no.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 12:44pm Jshatan:

I'm def going to check out the Three Card Monte session - Boogarins were fantastic at Other Music on Monday. Sorry I couldn't make the full show!
Avatar    Wed. 3/26/14 12:44pm Cecile:

Detroit definitely came first.

That good.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 12:57pm robyn:

wow, boogarins are touring like mad. should be able to check them out in may.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 12:58pm robyn:

re: pitchfork bands. when the description of your band makes me want to fall asleep or go listen to something i already know i like, you're doing it wrong.
Avatar    Wed. 3/26/14 1:04pm bobdoesthings:

re: pitchfork bands - whenever any douchebags make claim at being an authoritative resource for what's good... you're going to have a bad time.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 1:16pm Andrew Waterloo:

Or someone who claims to be authority on what you should be listening to at a given time.
Avatar    Wed. 3/26/14 1:21pm steve:

omg, so many clicky stars
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 1:24pm robyn:

but you MUST be RELEVANT at all TIMES @andrew!! /sarcasm
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 1:30pm Neg-guh-tor:

I love whirlpool productions.
  Wed. 3/26/14 1:31pm Saying ...:

That name, though ... Boogarins ... a little distancing.
  Wed. 3/26/14 1:36pm Cecile:

The problem with pitchfork bands is that they are not coming from a I'm going to Make It On My Own place, but rather dammit my mom forgot to pick up my Xanax today and my shift at Starbucks starts in an hour kind of place.
  Wed. 3/26/14 1:40pm K:

I suppose whenever we make broad generalizations about things there is a danger of stereotyping. I get it with the Pitchfork dis, but surely there are worthy bands who Pitchfork might champion.
  Wed. 3/26/14 1:43pm Cecile:

Absolutely. But I've noticed for bands outside genres they are comfortable with, they usually are not in the vanguard of championing them. Which, come to think of it, makes them more than a little like Rolling Stone.
  Wed. 3/26/14 1:45pm Cecile:

Or Spin.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 1:47pm Johnny_A:

I'm dating myself, but I remember when Spin was the big alternative to Rolling Stone.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 1:48pm Jshatan:

Pitchfork is, for me, just one place to get info and opinions. Sure, they sometimes blow it and the writing could be little less up it's own you-know-what but that's probably true of my own blog as well! And they were up on Boogarins with a 7.1.
  Wed. 3/26/14 1:49pm Cecile:

I'm dating myself, I remember when Rolling Stone was kind of alternative.
  Wed. 3/26/14 1:50pm Cecile:

I respect that. But that doesn't stop me from making fun of it. :)
  Wed. 3/26/14 1:51pm Ralphine:

I remember when Creem was the alternative to Rolling Stone. I first started reading Rolling Stone in the Ben Fong-Torres, Hunter S. Thompson, and Rev. Charles M. Young era.

I don't read Pitchfork, but I went to a Pitchfork festival several years ago that I liked pretty well. GZA, Yoko Ono, Slint, New Pornographers, Sonic Youth, Mastodon, Grizzly Bear, and Ken Vandermark's Powerhouse Sound stick out in my mind.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 1:52pm doca:

thanks for the music, duane!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 1:52pm Jshatan:

Dean Drummond's death last year was a huge blow to the Partch legacy. I got to see Newband at least once back in college and it was amazing. Here's hoping someone preserves those instruments!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 1:52pm Johnny_A:

Not a bad lineup
Avatar    Wed. 3/26/14 1:54pm common:

i wish i could preserve those instruments!
Avatar    Wed. 3/26/14 1:55pm steve:

these days i find i can't take seriously any review blog/site/magazine that gives number ratings (besides Resident Advisor, which i like, and is very straightforward and plain spoken in its reviews) - its become too much endless hype wagon nonsense. maybe its always been that way i just noticed it recently.
  Wed. 3/26/14 1:55pm djelrock:

Duane is the maine man! I'd pay to see Duane dj a performance art piece by Andre, but Andre cant destroy nuthin' for an hour!
Avatar    Wed. 3/26/14 1:55pm steve:

im with you common. each Parch fan should each get to preserve one! i think it might actually work out mathematically!
  Wed. 3/26/14 1:56pm Cecile:

Gotta go, but great chat and music as always.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 1:57pm Duane:

Djelrock: I'd do it in a heartbeat!!
Bye Cecile..'til next time!!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 2:00pm tim from champaign:

All chest thumping aside (on my part), it seems like bands that pitchfork champions and listeners who follow those bands is music for people who don't want to get dirty. For instance, there might be a pitchfork band that has classic rock tendencies but the band and/or their fans either aren't aware of or don't want to dig into something like Mountain.
Avatar    Wed. 3/26/14 2:03pm common:

@steve: that would be great!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 2:03pm tim from champaign:

Whereas the DJs on WFMU are not afraid to get dirty and even revel in some dubious muck which is why I love FMU.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 2:07pm northguineahills:

(i have a Mountain LP)
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 2:08pm tim from champaign:

ngh - I have 3 Mountain LPs!

Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 2:11pm Mike East:

diggin the sounds today, duane, for sure.
  Wed. 3/26/14 2:12pm K:

That Phil Brown sounded like "Got To Be Real."
Mountain LIVE ... yeah .... Long Red ... Nantucket Sleighride ... Leslie West ... Felix Pappalardi .... yeah .... on tempo Jack.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 2:13pm tim from champaign:

This Fugi is bad ass.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 2:16pm kwhitehead:

Man, I've been grooving to Mandrill all week. But I haven't heard this. Fierce.
  Wed. 3/26/14 2:17pm K:

This Mandrill music to me is from the elusive category called "Hard Rock" which became a rather generic term without much clear meaning. And yes, this could be a "Hard Funk" sub-category. I suppose it evolved into metal, but that seemed more about technological "advancements" that helped to formulate a new "sound." Hard rock was old school, loud, distorted, some drug association. Obscure proponent+ Demian (ABC Dunhill) .
THanks for the Mandrill .... brought it up last week.
  Wed. 3/26/14 2:19pm r i s k y:

GO DUANE! Love me some Mandrill!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 2:19pm Jshatan:

I have a smoking bootleg - Mandrill live on Long Island, 1974. This right here is a representative slice.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 2:20pm Johnny_A:

This is hot! I"'e got their 1st album, it isn't quite this hard, though it still rocks. They were at the PP bandshell a few years ago - it was a great show.
  Wed. 3/26/14 2:20pm K:

How about some Slave ... Drac!!!!!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 2:21pm Johnny_A:

Do you have to keep a fire extinguisher by the stereo when you crank that boot up?
  Wed. 3/26/14 2:22pm K:

Great show as always Duane, gotta run. Future request, some Larry Blackmon. Cameo.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 2:22pm tim from champaign:

Oh man, you're gonna set the station on fire, Duane!

Can someone please tell Eddy Grant to re-issue this burner??
