A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:19am AndrewC.:

Thanks - will give it a try...
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:19am Cecile:

no, andrew.
You have to pledge the amount they ask. I pledged in advance as a prize account, and unless there is a special prize for "Mouse of Today" people who pledge in advance, I have to pony up the money the premium requires.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:19am duke:

@AndrewC you can also give an amount all at once and apportion the credit to several different shows.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:19am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Thx for asking AndrewC! I do $10/month anyway - but I want $50 during the Marathon (that's all I can swing) to get me a T-Shirt.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:19am Cecile:

Oh, yeah, you can do that for total swag. But for on-air swag, you have to pledge the amount.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:20am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:32am Cecile:

I'm an omnivore carnivore. For you, you have to research your cheese Seek out cruelty free dairy farms or cheeses that don't use rennet.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:32am dale:

Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:35am duke:

I sometimes make the mistake of reading comments on news and other sites. One of the great things about the FMU comment board is that there is almost never any kind of abusive or obnoxious behavior you see on lots of sites. I don't know if the DJs can filter comments, but I attribute it to the fact that FMU listeners are just the best people.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:35am Guido (Cologne):

@RRN63
Most rennet today is artificial.
but the cows need calves for producing milk.
most of the calves get saughtered.

depends of what your goals are.
if you're straight about no animal-killing at all, so no milk products.
If you're just about reducing mass-meat-production some cheese might be still ok.
  Tue. 2/25/14 10:35am ?:

Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:40am duke:

@common yes, it's so rare that it shocks you when it happens. I noticed that occasion last week and definitely thought WTF!? The DJ told the person to cool it.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:41am Cecile:

I personally see no use for veal. I have tried it. It tastes like nothing. Let the little cows grow up and get old and tasty on grass and sunshine.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:41am Cecile:

duke, I heard later they banned his stupid ass. Good.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:41am ᏧᏣ ᎮᎯᎱ:

Ah Guido: I see your point. calf slaughter is a side product of livestock farming whether you eat the meat or drink the milk. You're right. Another point to keep in mind (then I shut up) is it's becoming apparent that all livestock farming combined is putting more than 50% of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Not really proven but even half that is not good. Done.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:43am duke:

@cecile Good!
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:43am Benjamen Walker:

Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:43am Cecile:

Yeah, that was awesome to hear.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:44am Ike:

Unfortunately we've had a few persistent mentally-ill commenters lately, but even they sometimes behave themselves. I feel kind of bad for them, some of them clearly need better medication (or to take their meds at all in the first place) or maybe they're just lonely, what w/repeatedly replying to themselves.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:45am Cecile:

i think it is a good idea to promote delicious vegetable cooking and to demonstrate how to produce best omami tastes from veggie food. There are some trick, you don't even need soy-replacement-products.

A good culture of cooking could help a lot.

Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:48am Cecile:

Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:48am V Priceless:

nice discussion about veganism and so. only half calves (male obviously) end up in meat industry.
somehow, pure veganism is not achievable.
it is a global question and taking it hardcore is not always the best way to make things change.
being reasonable and 'disturbing' the meat industry is already a good start.

I guess you could make an argument that the fairly unique solidarity of Revolutionaries & Workers in Paris68 (the U.S. didn't come close to that) prefigured CrowdSourcing in a way; FMU isn't broadly challenging the Government (of course) - but as StnMgr. One thing about the comment board is that the closer it gets to lunch time on the US east coast, the more the discussion steers towards food.

Radical veganism tends to produce bad promotion.
My humble opinion.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 10:54am doca:

@Andrew: You're right, it's like "I would like to eat meat but I can't, so I'll cook soy". But I think soy farming is equally hazardous to the planet as livestock, especially when it comes down to business and heavily-processed soy foods. And I speak from the world's largest soy producer and toxics using country, Brazil.

Oh right Cecile, now I see what you're talking about. I missed that one. Yeah, that's pretty rare here. @ RevoRabb: how about this: if cheese is OK, because it is produced by the animal as a natural process but is not the animal itself ( ie, "has no face"), than rennet is similarly a natural product of the animal, but not an animal per se.
"rennet" is just the culture "starter" for the fermentation that produces the cheese. (This is all quite apart from the "unpleasant" details about rennet that you might read.)

The production of soy for both food and green fuel is destroying rain forests and replacing traditional food production in developing countries. I avoid soy. A hereditary blood disease prevents total vegetarianism in our family (Well, 2 people have tried. One ended up in the ICU, one manages to get by just with chronic health problems.), but I tend to favour vegetarian meals. I think the key is moderation: some meat/fish/poultry a couple of times a week, otherwise vegetarian. The talk of exteme vegans about how everyone should be vegan and then we should exterminate all cattle, chickens, sheep and pigs seems ridiculous to me, not to mention the height of killing animals uselessly (and without using any part of it).

@P-90: If they're killing a baby calf just to get rennet from his tummy to make cheese - that's more than a by-product - that's killing - as far as the Humanitarian angle. Guido makes a good point about the Environmentalism; I have skated by for a while now saying if I don't eat animals I'm ahead of the curve (esp. as an American) - & this also means I'm still getting Cholesterol from Egg & Dairy - to add the Health angle.
- For the 'Health Food Store Types' - for lack of a probably better term - Less Processing is what's it's all about indeed; Soy is healthy - but Processed Soy - not so much.

Animal product issues are interesting. I avoid leather and fur, but clothes being vintage makes e.g. leather more appropriate. Also, if a certain number of animals are being slaughtered for food anyway, I'd prefer that the rennet and leather from those animals also be used, just because it feels like more of the animal is being used and not wasted. Killing purely for the rennet or leather would be unacceptable. But slaughtering animals in the huge amounts we do now is also an issue.
Avatar Tue. 2/25/14 11:22am bibi:

I was talking at the bus stop last week when it was miserably cold with two equally cold strangers. One guy had just moved up from the Carolinas, and me and another young lady were giving him advice. I said "I don't want to offend anyone , but down, silk longjohns, rabbit fur hats, and fleece lined boots are your friends. Thinsulate only goes so far." The young lady goes, "Look, I have rabbit fur earmuffs at home. I"m a hippie and a vegetarian, but it's freezing here and you can die in the cold. It's one thing to be perfectly vegetarian in California, and another thing here where the weather can kill you."
