Orchestre Poly etc are a must see live.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 9:43am Joe McG:

@Brian: Hey there! I agree, any hour is a good hour. Happy you could tune in. What's the UK like today? Here it is bloody hot.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 9:45am Brian in UK:

They can play any style from this kind of Afrobeat to soul, jazz, funk. Brass section as crisp as a nuns kimono.

Joe, when I got in the car yesterday around one PM the temp read 40c. Ouch.

Scottish friend who is a teacher told me she was off for holiday. I said, there's school in summer? She said, Scotland has no summer.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 9:52am Joe McG:

Does Scotland really have no summer? This I did not know!
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 9:53am Brian in UK:

Joe I was stunned when I heard that 'Stand you ground' was legal with six weeks afore any procescution. Boggling, it has to be reversed. It sends out such a bad message.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 9:54am Brian in UK:

@KP when the sun shines in Scotland there is no place finer. Don't happen that often though.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 9:54am Cecile:

Hola, all!

It's so hot today that I almost tripped over a pigeon. Now the birds in St. Paul are fat and overfed, but they can still book it when they hear a human behind them. This one was staggering! I don't blame him. Whew.
  Thu. 7/18/13 9:55am mrmucho:

This is a great track
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 9:56am Cecile:

Brian, there is legislation on the books in Texas where you can be aquitted if you murder someone and it's determined by the court that "they needed killin'". My friend's aunt got off scot-free because of that.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 9:56am Cecile:

She's like the jazz version of Millie Jackson here.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:00am Brian in UK:

@Ms: Many great songs on your premium this year, Michael, but this one is beyond.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:02am Cecile:

hahahahahahah awesome.
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:02am tim from champaign:

Texas is such a confounding place. I lived in Lubbock for 9 months and I experienced so much culture shock. People seemed to fearful. There was a woman in my neighborhood who walked a big ass german shepherd and carried an axe handle. So weird.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:03am Roberto:

Best FMU station ID delivery I've ever heard!
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:03am Van in DC:

Hi Joe
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:04am Cecile:

Nice! Shoulda been a better hit than Juice's.
I always like Misty Blue, great ballad.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:04am Brian in UK:

@Cecile 'they needed killin' Those three words put together just rip me apart. Is this the f...ing mafia.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:04am Joe McG:

Hey, Roberto, hey Van! I've been practicing for days, Roberto! Hey, Cecile!
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:05am Cecile:

I will visit Texas but I imagine that place would eat me alive if I lived there.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:05am Van in DC:

Still trying to get back to my home state of Texas!
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:05am Roberto:

You NAILED it bro.

@Roberto nitrous Oxide would do it for me.
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:06am glenn:

merrilee rush's version is still the gold standard.
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:06am glenn:

chip taylor is a very "interesting" guy.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:07am Cecile:

Brian, Texas is something unto itself. My husband thinks they should have just split off and become their own republic.

Now, that's extreme. That place has contributed so much to American culture and prosperity, but they do everything bigger. Even the bad stuff.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:07am Brian in UK:

Do not care who does it as long as Chip Taylor gets the cheques (checks)
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:07am βrian:

Lubbock even sounds strange. It's got to be an onomatopoeia, but for what?
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:07am Cecile:

glenn, absolutely, but this is a nice take on it.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:07am Van in DC:

We WERE our own republic, once.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:09am Cecile:

I know! My husband thinks it should have stayed that way.
Historian humor, I guess.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:09am Brian in UK:

Like Terry Allen's record Lubbock on Everything.

Nice one Joe, just bought this ALBUM been waiting twenty years or so.
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:10am tim from champaign:

Austin's cool and there's lots of great natural areas. Lubbock was a really weird place. It was extremely insular and indoctrinated. My wife and I had jaw dropping, forehead smacking interactions with Lubbockites at least once a week.
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:10am glenn:

i LUV lubbock on everything.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:11am Brian in UK:

Chip Taylor is a real gent. Dying breed.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:12am Joe McG:

@Brian: Apparently quite the gambler, too, I understand.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:13am Brian in UK:

He has The Jordanaires singing backup, stunning not on this though. He made his living at the track.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:13am Cecile:

I love Lubbock on Anything, too.
"He was the pride of the backfield"

  Thu. 7/18/13 10:13am Liz B.:

Morning Joe and everyone else! Somehow the twang is working well with this heat!
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:13am tim from champaign:

good one glenn. Here's a perfect example of Lubbock... in the city magazine a headline of an article stated "Reading Is Not Just For Children Anymore".
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:13am Brian in UK:

'Till they banned him.

You'll be playing cow punk next!!
  Thu. 7/18/13 10:16am Larry:

Hello Joe -

Do you keep song titles on file?

Keep doing a good show.
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:16am βrian:

Ah, I was just on a John Prine jag recently.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:16am Joe McG:

@Brian: Ha! I always tell the (true) story that the time I played an hour of cowpunk the comments board died COMPLETELY. The only time that ever happened!
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:17am Brian in UK:

@Joe is this the album with some Terence Boylan on it?
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:19am Joe McG:

@Larry: No, not really, Larry. This is kind of a song by association thing that I usually do. Right now we seem to be exploring the RCA records catalog circa 1972!
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:19am Brian in UK:

It is normally live sets that do that. It was two in the morning to be fair.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:20am Joe McG:

@Brian: Nope, I think that's a different one. Don't see Mr. Boylan on the credits.
  Thu. 7/18/13 10:22am mrmucho:

that one sounded pretty Dynaflex-y
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:23am Joe McG:

@mrmucho: Man oh man, was it ever! I can play frisbee with this fucker.
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:23am βrian:

Michael Nesmith! Where's my knit cap?
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:24am Joe McG:

@Brian: You mean your cowboy hat.
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:25am tim from champaign:

Joe, are your early 70s RCA records Dynaflex?
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:25am Brian in UK:

1976-77 were awful years for vinyl quality. They arrived pre-scratched and jumping. I had a John Stewart album like that on RCA funnily enough. When I heard it years later without the hisses and bumps, I did not recognise it.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:25am KP:

The Nez!
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:26am Joe McG:

@tim: A bunch of them are. My Nilsson records are pretty flappy from that era.
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:27am tim from champaign:

Flappy is a great descriptor. My Lou Reed and Bowie records are mighty flappy too.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:29am Dave E:

good thing for CD's!
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:30am KP:

Brian you are right. i always felt they did that to usher i CDs. They came in in the 80s. i bought a Bangles album that skipped, broke it, bought a Cd player.
  Thu. 7/18/13 10:30am Listener Alexandra:

That set could not have been more awesome. Thanks, Joe!
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:32am Dave E:

I would love to see them release "albums" on memory sticks.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:36am Joe McG:

Thanks, Listener Alexandra! Much fun!
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:37am Brian in UK:

Cannot see any reedeeming features for CDs over albums
Lost artwork
Lost sound quality (alright poor pressings but the principle is there)
Hard to read
Convenient in size is not a good enough reason, this had lead to mp3s and even worse quality.
Plus point the rise of the compilation.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:39am Joe McG:

@Brian: Do you work for Neil Young?
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:39am Brian in UK:

Joe are you covering Doug's show this week. I missed the last voice break. Did you give a station ID like Mickey?
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:39am Dave E:

They are more fun to throw?
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:39am Yair Yona:

Save me Joe from the last hour in the office and play me an Ike and Tina song.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:41am Brian in UK:

Ah yes PONO. He has this little device on the machine that lets you compare with mp3s and CDS whilst listening. That's confidence. Who is to say he is wrong?
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:41am Carmichael:

Yo, Joe! I'm chomping granola bars and drinking tea.

I bought 4 different albums of ELP's Trilogy. Each was worse than the last: hissing and crackling.

Well Chicka Boom, it's Daddy Dewdrop!
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:41am Joe McG:

@Yair: Oh, man, normally I would, but I'm in my 45 thing now, and then I'm playing an interview for an hour. Next time! @Brian: Yes, I'm going to be on for Doug tomorrow, so if you haven't had enough of this nonsense, I'll be back. And no, I love Neil dearly.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:43am Brian in UK:

I think Weld was one of the last new albums I bought.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:47am Cecile:

New albums are pretty great - carefully pressed and 180 gram vinyl. Unfortunately, where I shop, unless they are in horrible shape, all sales tend to be final. Probably that's why they are careful.
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:51am tim from champaign:

Wow, Charlie Daniels is boogeying hard!
  Thu. 7/18/13 10:52am trish:

Glad to be listening this too-damn-hot Thursday. (Cooler weather for NE N. America moving in on Sat.)
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:53am Carmichael:

Yay, Mike Scott!
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:53am KP:

it would be great if CDs sounded as good as Lps but convenience is king.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:53am Joe McG:

Thanks for tuning in, Trish! I'm so happy because WFMU is so nice and cool. I don't have AC at home.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:53am Cecile:

If they were limited to 3 minute uptempo singles, the waterboys would be amazing. Unfortunately, they and their fans love those 9 minute ballads.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:54am Cecile:

Sorry, Carm. hahahaha.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:54am KP:

I think Im going to Waterboys tomorrow (fair warning).
Avatar Thu. 7/18/13 10:55am glenn:

i flat out refuse to pay thirty bucks for a vinyl record. it could be pressed by naked buxom virgins during an eclipse and i still wouldn't pay it.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:55am Carmichael:

I know that's a 45, but it's from This is the Sea.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:56am Cecile:

I like Medicine Bow and Be My Enemy. Great songs.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 10:57am KP:

i would pay 30 bucks for an Lp if it came with someone to turn it over me, put on the next one and repeat process in car.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 11:03am Joe McG:

Oops, "Windy" is 1968.
Avatar    Thu. 7/18/13 11:06am Van in DC:

Ha ha, at a local BWW, I always play Wendy, or just whistle it, around a server named Wendy...cute young girl and she had no idea about the song, but she loves it
