Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:06am SeanG:

Hey Joe! 1972 was damn good year for music.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:07am ndbob:

Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:07am duke:

I thought I missed the intro. Glad to hear the radio guys.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:08am SeanG:

Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:08am Joe McG:

Sorry for the late start, guys! I'm a bit stream-challenged. Welcome!
  Fri. 7/19/13 9:09am 12539:

Just tuning in. Does this mean I'm not late?
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:10am listener james from westwood:

just splash around until you adapt to the current, and then dive on in!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:10am northguineahills:

I could swear we were all here together 24 hours ago.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:11am Uncle Michael:

We've got to keep meeting like this.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:13am Joe McG:

Today I'm broadcasting from Studio B, which gives this show a nice marathon-y vibe for me. Anybody want to donate some money? :)
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:15am Uncle Michael:

I'm robbing from Peter to pay Paul. not Joe. Check back with me after the first of the month.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:17am Uncle Michael:

I'm told Studio B has no cough button. I don't want to catch anything. How are you feeling, Joe?
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:17am Stanley:

This track started out all chilled then went electric.... now...now is all chilled again.
I like....now its gone all funky. I gotta shut up and go with it obviously.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:18am Joe McG:

Stanley, so nice to see you!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:20am Stanley:

Recently Friday afternoons at work have been me on my own, so its a great thing to tune in to the music and out of the dirge.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:20am Uncle Michael:

My dad...I swear. I send out the morning show email with the links and he replies to it asking me how he can listen at the office on his laptop. Patience, UM...patience....
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:21am Uncle Michael:

This track is fucking great.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:23am Joe McG:

@Stanley: Glad I can keep you company! @UM: I agree! @SeanG: Belated, but I agree, 1972 was a fab year for la musica.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:26am Dominick:

Riot! perfect 90 degree morning pick-up!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:27am Joe McG:

@Dominick: The part that is closest to me is the part where he says "don't want to move." Whenever I move, I start to sweat like I'm attached to a water sprinkler.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:36am Uncle Michael:

Who want's to change the baby? It takes a big diaper.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:37am Brian in UK:

Hello Joe and too many to mention, lovely people.

Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:38am Joe McG:

Hey, Brian! Long time no see!
  Fri. 7/19/13 9:38am Paul Sherratt:

Dr Brian, I presume !
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:39am Uncle Michael:

Hello Brian
  Fri. 7/19/13 9:40am Paul Sherratt:

Baby Huey, ' Hard Times ' never met anyone who didn'y love that on first hearing.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:41am still b/p:

The pop-up link for this stream and the main FMU stream are just an inch and a half apart on this playlist page. For the attention-challenged, this is a tripper-upper, the surest error bait. Gonna be record hot today, and that's the kind of thing that could cause tempers to explode and the window at Sal's Pizzeria to get smashed.
  Fri. 7/19/13 9:41am marmalade kitty:

Good to hear you, Joe!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:42am listener james from westwood:

b/p, i need 20 d-cell batteries.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:42am Joe McG:

@still: Do the right thing, my friend. @MK: Hey, Kitty, nice to see you!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:43am Uncle Michael:

Mookie saved lives when he threw that trash can. He did the right thing. Sal's never gonna get that.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:44am Brian in UK:

@Paul how are you doing? Hitting that south-west coast? This heat is hell for the mutt.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:44am ndbob:

actually cooling down here today - was 94 yesterday mid 80s today
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:45am still b/p:

@LJFW - Fight the power-hog.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:46am Brian in UK:

You can swear.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:47am still b/p:

If Drummer's still up here in Maine, he's gonna get cooked today, too. No relief in the north or on the shore.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:48am Uncle Michael:

I was exposed to baby in Wattstax.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:48am Stanley:

Ha ha Brian - see you and ready to point out the swearing opportunity.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

@still b/p
It is positively chilly (and foggy) on Deer Isle. Seems we picked a good coupla weeks to get the hell out of Dodge.

Good morning Joe! I finally wrestled my computer away from my anime-watching-obsessed daughter.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:51am Joe McG:

I swore. I hope you're proud of yourselves. :)
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:51am Brian in UK:

Stanley gasping for a pint of Pride already. Booked in for one at five o'clock.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:52am Uncle Michael:

I've been to Dodge. It's a hell of a place to get the hell out of.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:52am Brian in UK:

Fuckin' right, Joe. It's not clever and it's not grown up.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:54am Joe McG:

I'm definitely not a grown up, so it's okay.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:54am Joe McG:

DOUG! I just saw you up there! So happy to be filling in for you today. Hope you're having a great vacay!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:56am Alex In Illinois:

Not a summer person, eh? Reminds me of an episode of South Park.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:57am Doug Schulkind:

Leaving Maine tomorrow to drive the kiddo to camp in Vermont. Won't be back on the air until next Friday. This coming Tuesday, Jesse Kaminsky will fill in for me 6-7, then continue with his show 7-9. Thanks for pinch-hitting Joe! Sounds like you knocked a stand-up triple.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:58am Joe McG:

@Alex: I don't know it, but yeah, I see Canada in my future. Not because I love caribou. Maybe Minnersoter.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 9:59am Joe McG:

@Doug: My pleasure, Doug! Pretty country up there, enjoy!
  Fri. 7/19/13 9:59am Paul Sherratt:

As regularly as possible, and yes this summer stuff is a bit challenging if have to keep wearing a fur coat. Have you been on a trip ?
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:05am Brian in UK:

We went to Northumberland afore the weather went mad. Around Keilder and Hadrians Wall. Great walking. Few people. Stayed on a sheep farm where they also made their own sausages. Tasty.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:06am Stanley:

@Brian - waitng for my beersies too. Up here these new style craft beer places are all the rage. Scabby old pubs are turning into fancy joints as fast as you can say 'see you jimmy'. Very odd, one minute half empty smelly Stags Head, next minute 'The Other Place' gastro continental style bar and clientele to match. Its like magic.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:07am Brian in UK:

@Paul here's a free advert.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:10am Uncle Michael:

Joe knocked up triplets? I can't keep up.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:11am Brian in UK:

@Stanley looks like it's 4:30pm now.
Craft beer prices too.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:11am Brian in UK:

Killer set Joe.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:14am Joe McG:

@Brian: I'm feeling groove-oriented today, as you can tell, despite the hour.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:15am northguineahills:

Ah, so this is Jeri-Jeri, I've been wanting to hear them.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:18am still b/p:

Doug - I will gladly pay you on Tuesday for a bucket of chill today.

I see you are a bit outside our heat advisory area, with your expected highs in...the 70s...Whaaaaat? Your Kool Fu is powerful.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:21am Stanley:

@Brian - shit, you had me going.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:23am Holly in NC:

Good morning Joe & all other friends! Happy Friday!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:24am Joe McG:

Hey, Holly! Just like old times!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:25am Doug Schulkind:

I've been wanting to hear the Jeri-Jeri, too. Downloaded it just before leaving for Maine.

@still b/p
Chili today, hot tamale.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:30am Joe McG:

This song, by the way, has song title of the week and maybe the month.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:32am Brian in UK:

I'll drink to that. Joe.
  Fri. 7/19/13 10:32am 12539:

I think in German there's a single word for that.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:33am Joe McG:

@12539: Yes, but it's 32 letters long!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:34am Brian in UK:

No schadenfreude allowed on this station.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:34am listener james from westwood:

great track and great title!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:35am Uncle Michael:

How many umlauts?
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:35am Joe McG:

@UM: At least three.
  Fri. 7/19/13 10:36am trish:

way too hot todale,
game for tamale
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:41am Brian in UK:

Might consider Marsala Dosa, string hoppers and mutton curry later.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:44am Stanley:

string hoppers? Please explain. I need to know.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:45am listener james from westwood:

if i get enough work done this weekend i may hit the good indian place in my area as a reward. or even to stock up for readily reheatable leftovers through next week.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:47am Brian in UK:

Sri Lankan, formed in a wire container, basically noodles eaten with sambals, hot and coconut. Have them for breakfast over there.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:49am Uncle Michael:

I have pre-garnished a bowl of fresh, homemade, chilled gazpacho...which will be in the studio beer fridge, hard by my left hand for the moment during Hinky Dinky Time when peckishness sets in. It's the boy scout in me.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:49am Brian in UK:

Stanley, you should really try and get downwind of Dosas, made with ground rice flour again eaten with sambals. Loike a giant cripsy pancake folded in half. The Marsala is stuffed with potato. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:51am Brian in UK:

Joe, gotta sneak out there's a beer with my name on it out there. As they say, I've got a thirst you could photograph.
This is cookin'.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:52am Joe McG:

@Brian: So glad you could stop by! Enjoy that be-ah!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:57am Brian in UK:

Hector Lavoe singing Rueben Blades' El Cantante would make the day complete. Bye.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 10:58am Stanley:

Thanks Brian. Dosa is the mosta. Lived on them when I was in Calcutta (from tales of when I was a younger man). Enjoy your beer.
I'm off now, too.

Bye Joe and everyone.
Keep cool.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:04am Joe McG:

Bye, Stanley!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:04am Carmichael:

Hey Joe, I'll step up and take Brian's spot. How's it goin'?
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:05am Joe McG:

Hey, Carm! I like it when the seats are filled. I've been dancing around the studio so much during this show that I think I need to calm down. Next set will be mellow, I think.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:17am ndbob:

excellent show Joe! .. I need to go -catch the rest later
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:19am Joe McG:

Take care, ndbob! The magic of archives!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:27am northguineahills:

I like this take!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:28am Joe McG:

@ngh: Just listening to Danny Thompson play the bass makes me very happy.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

Learned the other day that Topic Records was founded by communists! Formed in 1939 by the Workers' Music Association, it is the oldest independent record label in the world.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:35am Uncle Michael:

I am not now, nor have I ever been...a musician.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:36am Holly in NC:

Loved the alt take of Reflection, thanks, Joe!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:36am Joe McG:

@Doug: And still going, I understand!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:36am Holly in NC:

btw, SO excited to listen to your Ruthann Friedman interview when I have time catch up...
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:38am Joe McG:

@Holly: Thanks, Holly! It was so nice to talk to her! I think it's fun to listen to. I just wish I'd asked for a crazy David Crosby story!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:38am Uncle Michael:

I have one!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:39am Uncle Michael:

Not as crazy as hers, one supposes.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

I believe Topic's most recent release is by Martin Carthy's (and Norma Waterson's) daughter Eliza.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:40am listener james from westwood:

arise, ye records from your jackets!
arise, ye singles from your sleeves!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:40am Joe McG:

@Doug: She caused quite a ruckus for awhile there with her dyed hair and big boots.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

Way better than big hair and dyed boots.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:44am Joe McG:

@Doug: Ha! Although certain 70s country singers might be an exception.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:44am Uncle Michael:

From each according to their abilities...to each according to their needs.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:45am Carmichael:

I'm going to see Richard Thompson next month! I love the whole Fairport/Span/Fotheringay/Pentangle/Brass Monkey era.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:48am Joe McG:

@Carm: Darn, I was going to play a track from the new John Kirkpatrick CD (Thompson's long-time accompanist, for one thing), but I forgot it downstairs. Perils of 4th floor broadcasting is that the library is so far away!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:49am Alex In Illinois:

John Kirkpatrick?? Is this the one that plays squeezebox?
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:51am Joe McG:

@Alex: Yep, here he is on a record from long ago. I'll try to get a track from the new one on a future show.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:52am Joe McG:

Ha! FMU's library copy of this one is a bit poppy. But hey, this show is called Surface Noise.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:52am Mike Noble:

I'm sad that I tuned into this show late!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:53am Joe McG:

Hey, Mike! Hope all is well!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

You know the old saying, Mike: You snooze, you lose McGasko.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:55am Uncle Michael:

I hope you'll all meet me over at www.wfmu.org... after Joe wraps it. Great show, Joe.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:55am Alex In Illinois:

I guess during the Fela Anikulapo Kuti song would have been the best chance to run downstairs to get that record.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:56am Joe McG:

@Alex: If only I'd thought of it then! Oh, well!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:56am pacific standard simon:

I been snoozin'.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:57am Joe McG:

Thanks for listening, everybody! Stay tuned on the stream for Uncle Michael!
  Fri. 7/19/13 11:57am trish:

Fine fill in, Joe.
Bon weekend everyone.
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:58am northguineahills:

That was awesome, thanks Joe!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:58am listener james from westwood:

many thanks for the lovely show, joe! great to have a double dose this week!
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:58am pacific standard simon:

Whattaya say, easterners? Is today gonna be a good day?
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 11:59am Alex In Illinois:

One summer when I used to DJ on my college's radio station, would put on a Fela Anikulapo Kuti song whenever I had to go to the bathroom or needed more than 10 minutes
Avatar Fri. 7/19/13 12:00pm Carmichael:

Kirkpatrick is a fine button accordion player. Saw him w/Thompson about 15 yrs ago.
