  Thu. 6/20/13 9:51am Ralphine:

I just read this interesting tidbit in the NY Times' obituary for Slim Whitman: "Paul McCartney said Mr. Whitman gave him the idea of playing the guitar left-handed."

Avatar Thu. 6/20/13 10:15am tim from champaign:

I got this record when it came out. In retrospect, I think this might be one of the first non Top 40, pure pop records I got into.
Avatar    Thu. 6/20/13 10:15am Cecile:

I can take them, they just don't move me. When they went pop, there was always something about Patridge's songs that put me off. I'm told the handful of songs I like by them are all written by Colin Moulding. Good to know.
Avatar    Thu. 6/20/13 10:16am Joe McG:

This next tune goes out to Rich Hazelton.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/13 10:16am Dr. Goot:

Avatar    Thu. 6/20/13 10:16am Cheri Pi:

Sweet.
Avatar    Thu. 6/20/13 10:18am Cecile:

I should revisit them. Thanks to Sgt Pepper's being overplayed and bad radio, I had an allergy to a lot of "classic" Britishness that didn't dissipate until I started doing college radio.
Avatar    Thu. 6/20/13 10:18am PKNY:

I have the "Mizrab" LP, but I don't remember Gabor's version of "Summer Breeze" was this dope. I'll have to dig that out when I get home.

BTW, there's a track called "Thirteen" on this record that is that heat.

Avatar Thu. 6/20/13 10:23am tim from champaign:

The early 90s Fantagraphics roster really changed my perspective of art and writing. In recent years, I got back into reading comics because the local library carries just about every graphic novel that comes out.

A mid-show hello , Joe & all. Taurus reporting heah! But it's all bull ( bad rim-shot!). Great Suzanne Vega show in Mad Sq Park last night...but nothin' compared to our present Surface Noise.

this was what we grew up on as kids, not Radio Disney. All those weird little nursery rhymes.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/13 10:36am joe:

@ Tim totally with you tim. I had been involved in the "comics world" for years but there were many artists I did not get into until older and Fantagraphics made it so easy. About two or three years ago I finally found myself appreciating Crumbs work and those Complete Crumb books have been indispensable to me.

Avatar    Thu. 6/20/13 10:40am Cecile:

Fantagraphics were so broad in their taste in reissues, weirdos like Fletcher Hanks, oldies like Prince Valiant and Peanuts and of couse Love and Rockets.

Avatar    Thu. 6/20/13 11:29am Carmichael:

No no, my birthday is in August (Leo). Brian got confused. You can verify that with Mark Knopfler.
Avatar    Thu. 6/20/13 11:29am Brian in UK:

Carmichael I meant same day, same year. Hell who cares.

Alan Hull was a wonderful song writer.

But thanks anyway, all. It's good to count heads, for those times when trouble comes.
Avatar Thu. 6/20/13 11:31am joe:

Oh good I'm not the only one who got the Neil Young vibe out of that.

The Festival is in town this weekend. It's about beer, beer and beer. 200 of them. Too many monies for session tickets, though. I will do my sipping of creditable brews in standard bars & behavior.

Brian, you aren't kidding on how hard it was to find things back in the day. Even in the 80s, I had a huge list of LPs and comics for friends all over the world.

I just have to pass on these comments to an article at CNN.com about Joe Torre's daughter catching a one-year-old who fell off a fire escape in Brooklyn:

Like father like daughter! Nice catch!!

Thank God it wasn't A-Rod -- E-5 and child goes to Emergency room.

Art Vandelay • 2 hours ago
A-Rod is no All-Star fielder, but nobody on the team is as awful a fielder as Eduardo Nunez. Guy couldn't catch a cold.

Steve • 2 hours ago
Not true, he would of caught the baby, but would of thrown it away,
