There are ZERO Vietnamese places anywhere near me, although we have a halfway decent Korean joint in town, and a sublime Chinese place about 40 minutes away where they grow many of their own vegetables. Makes me miss jersey city with TWO good Vietnamese places, about one block from the other. One expensive, the other not. Both NICE.
Avatar 4:59pm

Wendy, I don't know what I will do when I eventually move to a cheaper town in my dotage. I'm gonna have to learn to cook Vietnamese!!!
  4:59pm

  5:00pm

Trust me I have to do a hike into NYC or Brooklyn or Queens to get anything decent. This area BLOWS for food more and more. Pt. Washington is a food black hole. it wasn't when I first moved here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Cecile, I feel ya. We have NO good bagels up here in New England. A friend cures her own corned beef for similar reasons.

Scott Briggs, Hoboken is stupid expensive for food these days.
  5:02pm
Scott Briggs:

OH yeah I gathered that. Last time i was even there was like four years ago already for a Winter Hours tribute night at Maxwells, and ate dinner there, which isn't that bad but the food is meh now I had sheph. pie it was ok
Avatar 5:03pm
Cecile:

I can deal with Bruegger's because I am lazy.
I just wish they would carry the cream cheese from Rye Deli. Their bagels are lame, but it's the BEST cream cheese ever. Putting the two together is too much work.

When I was a kid we would travel around a lot because of my dad's work. One time when I was 10-11 we lived in Vernon, TX. I had a friend from school that I hung out with most all of the time. His dad was a Vietnam Vet and his mom was Vietnamese. So he was half of each of course. But she would make those sandwiched for us when we played outside, and use lettuce leaves to wrap up some delish stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm

Cecile, you must be in my neck of the woods. We have a Brueggers too. Their bagels are half-ass. But better than Bagel Works, which are bland as fuck. Sigh... If I had room in my shop for a big vat to boil bagels in, I'd make my own!
  5:09pm
Scott Briggs:

I think Park West used to be really great many years ago, from my recollection, my dad used to live in Passaic and then Nutley so we went to all those diners all the time then, talking 1980s through early 1990s at most

We can have stale H&H Bakery bagels shipped in at Brother's. (Oh, pre-baked. Read half-stale) Or there's Bruegger's. Or Rye Deli.

I guess St. Paul Bagelry is good, but I never get over there.

Tick Tock is NJ is ok, but the one in Manhattan (near Penn Sta) is pretty shitty. Awful service, too. Too bad, because the menu is pretty good, but the food ain't so great. I like the diner a block south from there -- can't remember its name -- across from the big post office. The diner I really miss is Cheyenne, which used to be on 33rd and 9th. Ok, I can't put it off any later, time for a sandwich, will be back.
  5:18pm
Scott Briggs:

Go for it! Do you recall Dave B, Avenue A Sushi?? The place that was across from where Niagra is now?
Avatar 5:18pm
Cecile:

I like Pantera, but not their bagels.
Avatar 5:19pm
Dave B:

@ Cecile - they make you F*CKING HOSTILE!!!!!!
Avatar 5:20pm
Cecile:

Yeah. I like those little quichey things they make, though. om nom nom.
Avatar 5:20pm
Dave B:

Ave A Sushi was good. Izakaya Ten is kinda more pubby, kinda like Decible only above ground.
  5:22pm
Scott Briggs:

I walked into Ave. A two years ago and realized someone bought it and converted it into god knows what. Oh well.

B Bagels corporate office is in Burlington, VT. Or one of them is. I know some of the people. They have stories.
  5:25pm
Scott Briggs:

What's the deal with those Dangelos Sandwich Shoppes up in New England? I ate at one a long time ago mid 1990s or so, it was ok not great
  5:27pm
Scott Briggs:

The grinder places D'Angelos. They're like, eh.

We'll bring back New York Bagels from Southfield on trips to the Detroit area to satisfy bagel needs.
Avatar 5:34pm
Dave B:

The H&H on the UWS is now a Verizon store.
Avatar 5:35pm
Cecile:

Southfield has some great bagels.
Avatar 5:36pm
Carmichael:

Where the heck were you guys BEFORE lunch?!?
  5:36pm
Scott Briggs:

omg! so sad. H&H used to be great. I did read Detroit has some actual good pizza though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Oh Dave B, that is so depressing and typical. i was still living in the area when the UWS H&H closed. Granted, I get my bagels from Zabars because I work there so I get a discount, but fuckin' A. H&H!
Don't we have ENOUGH cellphone stores? What is it with them?!?

Modern Love

Carmichael:

Nice bed music, Scott. I suddenly feel like roller skating!
  5:38pm
Scott Briggs:

I recall the Let's Dance video clip got all the push on MTV though before China Girl did from my memory anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:38pm
tim from champaign:

My wife attended elementary school in Southfield. She loved bagel Fridays.

Mike East:

A few weeks back, my daughter and niece wanted to have a dance party, so I put "Let's Dance" on the turntable and let it ride. So many hits on that album. I'm a fan of Modern Love, myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
Scott Williams:

Ah, Modern Love, that's right - thanks Cecile!
  5:40pm
Scott Briggs:

I picked up a nice fresh remaster of Let's Dance (finally) a couple of years ago at HousingWorks was playing it in the car a lot the next few days, it's a good record but not great by any means but produced well
  5:41pm
Scott Briggs:

Can we hear some Frank Chickens?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

This AR & Machines track sorta reminds me of the keyboard-only version of "Eminence Front".
Avatar 5:42pm
Carmichael:

Didn't Stevie Ray Vaughan play some uncredited guitar on that album?
Avatar 5:42pm
Dave B:

@Wendy - if not for a cellphone store, then a bank. Just last week the Emerald Inn on Columbus shuttered after 70 years and will be a Kate Spade store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm
Scott Williams:

a very fine Who number, Wendy. Hi Wendy! Carmichael, yup - tho I don't think he was uncredited, in fact I remember a big deal being made out of it
Avatar 5:44pm
Cecile:

he wasn't credited on the album, but he was sure in the videos.

Scott Briggs:

lucky bugger! where is this in Brooklyn??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

Dave B, further evidence of NYC becoming a place where nothing useful for average people is sold. No bagels, no neighborhood bars. Just mall shit and expensive crap. Sigh... Let's all move to Pittsburgh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm
Wendy del Formaggio:

hi Scott Williams! Fine show today!
Avatar 5:47pm
Cecile:

no, wendy. Too close to my mom.
  5:47pm
Scott Briggs:

I see it Nam Nam over near Bushwick or in Bushwick. Sounds great. I'd go tonight but it's only open till 9 supposedly and I'm stuck in LI hel.
Avatar 5:48pm

I still call it home, and still have faith. (and I go out of my way to support mom and pop shops...)

Montrose & Manhattan.
  5:48pm
Scott Briggs:

Pt. Washington we have three bagel shops, four pizza joints, and I like NONE of them anymore. So sad.
  5:49pm
Scott Briggs:

thanks yeah I bookmarked it on Yelp etc.
  5:49pm
Scott Briggs:

however, I went to the legendary Whitestone sandwich shoppe Cherry Valley Deli last week, it's 24/7, been there for many years, so great!
  5:50pm
Scott Briggs:

trouble is, it's in Whitestone. ho hum
Avatar 5:51pm
Dave B:

there used to be a good Thai joint in Pt. Wash years back when I was on the island... cnat recall name or location at the moment
Avatar 5:52pm
northguineahills:

They got a better recipe and better bread then the last time. It's pretty much just a take-out joint, although they have seats, it won't win any awards for ambiance. I'm very satisfied and have enough sandwich for two meals at $5.50.

Wendy del Formaggio:

Cecile, howsabout Baltimore? Providence?
Avatar 5:53pm
Cecile:

I can do Balmer or Providence.
I hear Des Moines is kind of happening, but it's way too landlocked.

Little bunny is chafing under the constraints of oppression. Just saying.
  5:55pm
Scott Briggs:

There's a Thai place here it's like, ok, wouldn't say superlative. A better one in Williston Park I just ate there last weekend, SriPriThai or whatever the same as in Queens
Avatar 5:55pm
Cecile:

mom is enabling little bunny. Will she hide him from the cops when the law is after him?
Avatar 5:56pm
Dave B:

A good bunny tomorrow makes for a delicious paella tomorrow night!
Avatar 5:56pm
Cecile:

"No, Officer, I haven't seen Little Bunny. A warrant for murder you say? Oh, he's in the shed."
  5:57pm
Scott Briggs:

I'll go check out Nam Nam soon next jaunt I take over to Brooklyn for sure. Half the time I end up in Queens for dinner, at least, because I cannot tolerate the food here mainly
