Options October 10, 2012: LP Mayhem In The PM: 3 hours of power-pop, post-punk, new wave and punk from 1978-1982! (31 Days Of October Silent Fundraiser, week 2)

Listen to this show: | Add or read comments

Tonight it's another one of my "Mayhem" shows, where I return to my college radio roots and play nothing but power-pop, post-punk, new wave and punk from 1978-1982. The last few years I've done this during WFMU's Singles Going Steady week, so I'm turning the tables this time and playing nothing but LPs!

It's part of the station's 31 Days Of October silent fundraiser -- we're giving you a full month of special shows instead of interrupting our on-air programming for a second time this year, but we really need your support to help keep us on the air.

  Wed. 10/10/12 9:05pm SteveL:

I like Ready Steady Go better every time I hear it. I'm pretty stoked. I already have a feeling I'm going to be hitting this show a lot in the archives.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:06pm Barkevious Shabazz:

How do you go from the splendor of Ready, Steady to the dreck of White Weddin'?
Wed. 10/10/12 9:06pm Holly in NC:

Hi Evan & friends! I know this show is going to be stellar. Sad can't tune in 'til ~ 10:30. Y'all have fun in the meantime.

The jags? Wowzers i'm ancient.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:09pm Thierry:

Hi Evan and familiar names! Sounds like a great upcoming show to be back.

EFD! Tonight's "Mayhem" show sounds extremely promising!

Hi MN Jeff, Mike, will, SteveL, Barkevious, Holly, john, Danne, Joe B, Thierry and all other "Funk Fans"! :)
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:10pm will:

Was that "relive your youth" of "relieve your youth"?
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:11pm Caryn:

Damn, missed "Ready Steady Go"! Well, it's not as if I wasn't going to listen to this in the archives too.
Wed. 10/10/12 9:12pm Matt from Springfield:

  Wed. 10/10/12 9:12pm Minnesota Jeff:

Pezband, so much better than Necowaferband. ::big laffs::
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:12pm Neal Adams:

Confusing White Wedding with The Jags, Barkeviius? Why you, I oughta....
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:12pm SteveL:

Barkevious S. I believe the answer is, Fame. The different paths of Idol, Siouxie Sioux, Sid Vicious are fascinating. In the end, they all wanted to be on stage. Billy hit it big, and didn't even die. Always enjoy his bit in The Wedding Singer.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:13pm Cal Zone!:

Mayhem in the PM! It's the New Afternoon Show for Night Owls! Like 32 years never happened!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:14pm john:

What Cal said. Making me wish I'd gone to NYU. Or at least listened on the internet between school vacations.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:15pm will:

Fast answer to Barkevious's first comment: Very easy--gimme money!!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:15pm Caryn:

@SteveL: very true. I actually wonder what would've happened if Idol had played the T-1000 in "Terminator 2" like he was originally supposed to do.
Avatar Wed. 10/10/12 9:15pm efd:

Now now, Neal, Barkevious meant no harm! I think was strictly referring to the career arc of Mr. Idol.

Hi everyone, thanks for listening! Let's get those pledges coming in, especially you lurkers who I don't even know about! :)
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:16pm Minnesota Jeff:

Neal Adams is here?! I loved that Beast falling page in X-Men #57, Neal!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:16pm Thierry:

a gem, this 12''
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:16pm Billy Idol:

];,] (Does that look anything like my lip sneer, or have I been drinking again?)
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:17pm Neal Adams:

Not me Jeff, sorry.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:19pm will:

I will pledge again, just because I must, the EFD show is the nazz, and got me back into listening to FMU shows live, for the surprises they contain.
Wed. 10/10/12 9:20pm Matt from Springfield:

The Shoes! There's some classic power pop right here! :)
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:21pm Oh Evan:

I go back to those days stateside hearing this barage of exciting fresh ,beautiful music ,much of it from the uk but my youth was filled with the joy of being alive during a most unique time in history. and you sir were the pilot for a good part of the radio , round here . thanks for still being here evan .
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:22pm Chowder:

You are killing it EFD, keep up the good work!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:22pm Neal Adams:

And sorry Barkevious..
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:22pm Billy Idol:

Caryn: I didn't know that about Terminator Idol. That would have been interesting. Robert Patrick sure worked a lot (just looked it up of course.)
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:22pm Cal Zone!:

@John. There was no 'internet' in 1982. It was a magical time when we listened to post punk on the radio, danced at clubs, and waited for imported vinyl and tiny indie punk 45's to turn up at boutique record stores. It's too easy to be a hipster today...we used to have to work at it!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:22pm Edley:

This Bill Nelson song RULES. One of my faves :)
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:22pm SteveL:

Caryn: Er, I just outed my Bill Idol alter ego.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:23pm Mike East:

Hey Matt - looks like Marco Benevento is getting around. Doing a live spot on WNYC today as well.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:23pm Cal Zone!:

I've got this Bill Nelson on a 2x45 gatefold set!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:24pm john:

@Cal: I was at school in rural Connecticut in 1982. It was damn near impossible.

I've got the 12" of Flaming Desire--the double-7" is way cooler.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:24pm steve:

hi evan!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:25pm Caryn:

The breaking news on the tv is that archaeologists believe they've found the exact spot where Julius Caesar was stabbed to death. Kinda fits the mayhem show!

@SteveL: I promise to ignore it and move on, if you so want :)
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:25pm SteveL:

Matt from Springfield: If you like The Shoes, get their new stuff. Heard it yet? Pretty damned good.

(Midwest pop REPRESENT, please, thank you.)
Wed. 10/10/12 9:26pm Kat in Chicago:

Forgot what a glorious synthy mess "Flaming Desire" is.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:26pm SteveL:

Caryn: Nothing to see here.
Avatar Wed. 10/10/12 9:26pm efd:

oh my goodness gracious, so many comments! I'm reading them all, but tough to respond during these kinds of shows. They (and you) are all appreciated!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:27pm john:

New Shoes record is my fave rave album of the year, for what that's worth.
Wed. 10/10/12 9:27pm Holly in NC:

@john - I was in school in suburban Connecticut in 1982 - no better. I was no Legs or Thurston, that's for sure!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:27pm Danne D:

e tu cnn?
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:28pm SteveL:

efd: Watch your language!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:28pm Danne D:

Interesting about the Julius Caesar news. Actually they had a thing on Caligula on History last night which kinda threw me, cuz, that was like actually someone from history and not an alien
Wed. 10/10/12 9:28pm Matt from Springfield:

@SteveL: Really? Sounds like I should look into some "new Shoes" then! Thanks john too.
@Mike: That's great! Must be the NY leg of Marco's publicity tour.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:28pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Jaz came home!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:30pm Mike East:

@Matt - looks like he didn't bring Joanne, though. FMU gets the good stuff.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:30pm john:

@Holly, I lived in suburban Connecticut then, but at least unlike school, at home we were just barely in range of WNYU--another town or two over and it was gone.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:31pm SteveL:

Got my Martha swag from last marathon. If you've never pledged won a WFMU DJ mix, you really haven't lived.

Wed. 10/10/12 9:34pm Holly in NC:

@john - I just wasn't that hip. Though I did sneak into a club in New Haven to see the Ramones!
Wed. 10/10/12 9:34pm Michael from the Left Coast:

Oh, I missed Flaming Desire (and the 12 inch too)
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:34pm SteveL:

I'm going to play old man for a moment: Remembering when band names like Killing Joke, Dead Kennedys, Throbbing Gristle, were damned near frightening to even hear. It was a very unusual time in music history.

OK, I'm not old any more.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:35pm Cal Zone!:

Question for Evan. What percentage of tonight's vinyl was purchased from 99 Records vs. Bonaparte Records?
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:35pm Danne D:

Why can I see Ozzy covering this song somehow?
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:36pm Minnesota Jeff:

"Lots of pizza and ice cold cokes!" Ha!!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:36pm SteveL:

Danne D: I can see that very clearly.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:36pm Minnesota Jeff:

Danne D - Whoa! Yeah, totally! I can see that as well.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:37pm john:

Trying to think who I'd have seen in New Haven round that era. Stranglers comes to mind first.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:37pm Cal Zone!:

Baseball Update for EFD. Top of the 7th Orioles beating the other team 2-1 and evidently A-Rod has just jumped ship and is playing for the guys with the crazy cartoon bird head on their hats.
Wed. 10/10/12 9:38pm Matt from Springfield:

"Hong Kong Garden"!!!! SIOUXSIE!!
Wed. 10/10/12 9:39pm BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

  Wed. 10/10/12 9:40pm Danne D:

(just kiddin')
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:41pm SteveL:

I'm just going to say a band name out loud.

Vibrators. (anything but "Pogo Dancing" Talk about a sell-out attempt.)
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:41pm Cal Zone!:

I saw Siouxie and The Banshees play at the Malibu nightclub on LI in 1980 or so. I was at the club early and watched her puke her guts out on stage during the sound check. She came out a couple hours later and put on a magnificent show! A real trooper!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:42pm UNICORNS:

can't deny it . u 2 were there too.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:42pm Power Popeye:

Disco in Moscow!
Wed. 10/10/12 9:42pm Holly in NC:

@john - see, I'd never even heard of the Stranglers in '82. My other high school era New Haven shows = Neil Young, David Bowie, the Police (with REM opening) & Rush. Rush X3, actually :-)
Wed. 10/10/12 9:42pm Matt from Springfield:

This is early early U2, watching Joy Division record era U2.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:43pm SteveL:

I did NOT see U2 during this time period--twice. I believe that was an error.

those days are long gone, clearly, but try to picture them!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:43pm Cal Zone!:

Wed. 10/10/12 9:44pm Holly in NC:

I LOVED the 1st 2 U2 lps. High school, people - & efd's right - they were absolutely not mainstream.
Wed. 10/10/12 9:44pm Kat in Chicago:

Oh, U2. I liked them once.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:45pm Power Popeye:

  Wed. 10/10/12 9:45pm SteveL:

Wed. 10/10/12 9:45pm Michael from the Left Coast:

U2 is mainstream now--but then no one sounded like the Edge and everyone copied him (see Junior's "Mama Used to Say")
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:45pm Danne D:

U2, Kat?
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:45pm john:

@Holly, sounds like I may have a few years on you, and just to lose my hipness cred, I saw Tom Petty at the New Haven Coliseum in '81. Split Enz opened. And I took some crap about playing the first couple U2 records in the dorm, yeah.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:46pm joe:

Wed. 10/10/12 9:46pm Holly in NC:

OOhh! I got to see Adam Ant in my home town jai alai fronton, that was the best! I wore my band uniform, which looked pretty much exactly like an ant costume! And the Romantics opened!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:47pm joe:

hearing something makes me almost remember how important u2 wad to me at one time
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:47pm Power Popeye:

I'd take 65-75 any day. ---- I thought "Beautiful Day" was a decent late-period U2 song.
Wed. 10/10/12 9:47pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: Wow, "Heat Of The Moment"! Had to look that up. (So a new "arena rock" supergroup actually touted the then-current view that the discos hold no charm for you! True for many people, but such a trying-to-fit-in lyric! :)
Wed. 10/10/12 9:47pm BadGuyZero (Dallas, TX):

Time to bust out a Stiff Records box set.
Wed. 10/10/12 9:47pm Kat in Chicago:

Me2, Danne :) Forgot I saw them at the Park West on their first American tour! Holy crap.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:48pm john:

  Wed. 10/10/12 9:48pm Danne D:

Wed. 10/10/12 9:48pm Holly in NC:

I can't hear the Lords, but I singing along anyway because I LOVE THIS SONG
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:48pm Barkevious Shabazz:

This lords is top notch.
Wed. 10/10/12 9:49pm Kat in Chicago:

LOL picturing Holly in her band uniform at Adam Ant!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:49pm Cal Zone!:

Early u2 shows were absolutely magical in the early days...and then they became a Vegas magic show. Joshua Tree was one of the worst ideas of the 80's. A shark jump moment.

Jack Casady on bass on this SVT song!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:50pm Cal Zone!:

I booked SVT at my community college on LI! They were swell!
Wed. 10/10/12 9:50pm Holly in NC:

@John - And pre-show Adam ate at the Post Road HoJo's, a friend of mine may still have his spoon.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:50pm john:

I remember (gonna have to ban that verb here soon) when U2 were written about as spearheading a [ahem] new psychedelia along with Echo and the Bunnymen and Teardrop Explodes. Probably still have the mags that promulgated that nonsense, though the writers and editors have presumably been too embarrassed to emerge from their bunker in a quarter century.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:50pm Danne D:

@M_f_S That album is #GHS-2046 I believe. I'll double check when I get home. Didn't see 'em live until the 25th anniversary tour though (gotta love a 25th anniversary for a band-lineup that last 2 years).
Wed. 10/10/12 9:50pm Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Really, did Adam & the Ants wear costumes like band uniforms? Like George Clinton said, you could tell the hardcore fans at Parliament shows because "they dressed even crazier than we did"!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:50pm Danne D:

(a little hard to get to the arena on my own when I was 12)

@Kat - lots of gold braid. And epaulets. They don't make band uniforms like they used, at least not in public schools.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:51pm As I Recall:

I remember when Adam Ant broke his ankle on Motown 25

@Matt - Yes. Yes, they did. And of course I had the makeup, also.
Wed. 10/10/12 9:54pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cal: Nice score! I wish colleges (and especially comm. colleges!) still booked the kinds of bands they once did!

@Danne: Well a 25th anniversary lineup "is what it is". Might not last too long, but if you enjoy them it's your chance to see the band. If you think you'll have fun, enjoy it! :)
Wed. 10/10/12 9:54pm Holly in NC:

Oh, evan, I can't listen yet, you cad!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:54pm Minnesota Jeff:

Damn, this is such a great song. Adam & The Ants are incredible.
Wed. 10/10/12 9:54pm Matt from Springfield:

Shout-out, to all you Scorpios!
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:55pm Danne D:

@M_f_S (lol already saw 'em - 25th anniversary was 5 years ago ;)

Let's see Howe looked literally like Eddie from Iron Maiden.

(This song sounds just like "The Metro")

Palmer still was fantastic - really mindblowing.
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:56pm Danne D:

Like if the B-52s met "The Metro"
  Wed. 10/10/12 9:57pm Cal Zone!:

Evan Davies loud is a little lower than Todd-o-phonic Todd loud.

Now I'm out.
Wed. 10/10/12 10:00pm Matt from Springfield:

Recreation working! I noticed right away you didn't have the "American Woman" riff as your bed music (from a hip hop song from after '82 you know! :)
  Wed. 10/10/12 10:00pm Thierry:

Didn't The Pretenders release the first single of the 80's, in January 1980?

  Wed. 10/10/12 10:05pm Caryn:

Too bad I was too young to enjoy these at the time. The latest songs played so far came out when I was 3. At that age, I was just listening to classic rock, Zappa and Sha Na Na.

Eddie Tenpole! Where's he at now?
  Wed. 10/10/12 10:09pm Caryn:

@SteveL & Matt: well, my dad was a record collector and my mom was a rock journalist, so me and my brother were raised on lots of music.

  Wed. 10/10/12 10:12pm john:

I can think of a couple other bands that were kind of soundtracky for me from the New Afternoon Show, but there's no way I'm going to remember if EFD played them or it was someone else. But what came to mind was Human Switchboard (you did play them, if I recall) and (are you all seated comfortably?) Urban Verbs.
Wed. 10/10/12 10:12pm Michael from the Left Coast:

This Senders song is exactly the same as Crawl Up and Die by Stray Cats

BadGuy Z, sorry, no Wipers. (And I know people mentioned the Call and the Alarm (kind of) earlier, don't have those either.
Wed. 10/10/12 10:54pm Holly in NC:

@John - 1/2 show was Trans, 1/3 was acoustic. Actually a better & less disconcerting show then when I saw him many years later in Chapel Hill with Sonic Youth opening. Oh and, and, and I have a Sonic Youth at Hampshire College concert tee shirt ca 1986-87, that is some cred right there, I think ;-)
Disclosure - I didn't see the SY show, I chose to stay in and write (gulp) an econ paper & finish a lighting design project, , a good friend brought me the t shirt. Cannot tell a lie. I've never been cool.
Avatar Wed. 10/10/12 10:54pm efd:

Then again we also played "Too Drunk To Fuck" uncensored on the air back then. Different times.

@Holly, to paraphrase Oscar Wilde, the only thing cooler than going to the Sonic Youth show is NOT going to the Sonic Youth show.
Wed. 10/10/12 10:55pm some other guy:

do you have comateens? "cool chick", perhaps? chin chin? It's funny how much this resembles the radio show I did nearly 20 years later. It didn't even occur to me that it was pretty much a throwback show at the time, but it was.

In a perfect world, Head East would be right up there with Styx.
Wed. 10/10/12 10:56pm Matt from Springfield:

@Holly: Neil Young's live in Berlin show was kind of like that -- featuring his songs from Trans, but also featuring old Crazy Horse electric and Neil acoustic songs.

  Wed. 10/10/12 11:33pm Weems:

Wed. 10/10/12 11:34pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: It's normally not polite to issue demands to DJs, but that is one demand they want to hear!! :) I second it! I insist!
Wed. 10/10/12 11:35pm trixia in sf:

Wed. 10/10/12 11:35pm Holly in NC:

@efd - Why is there no cat hair on your floor (gazing despairingly at my own floor)? Magic powers?

Sending this one out to john and all Chihuahua owners!
Wed. 10/10/12 11:38pm Holly in NC:

Bow Wow Wow was much better than most people credit.
Wed. 10/10/12 11:39pm Matt from Springfield:

Bow wow WOW, is that *really* their album title??
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:39pm john:

Thanks! He stopped snoring for a moment to listen.
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:40pm SteveL:

Bow Wow Wow was a greats show. One of the sweatiest.
Avatar Wed. 10/10/12 11:40pm efd:

Matt, would I have typed all that in if it weren't?
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:40pm Caryn:

@Matt: exactly what I was wondering!
Wed. 10/10/12 11:41pm Holly in NC:

Oh, yes.
Wed. 10/10/12 11:42pm Holly in NC:

@john - any doggie dreams tonight?
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:45pm Barkevious Shabazz:

Dammi, had to walk Frank and missed ACR.
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:45pm john:

Actually, there's a bit of a hind leg twitch, so he may be chasing cats, dreaming of having four working legs so he might actually catch one, not that he'd have a clue what to do if he did other than accept an array of puncture wounds. Still, a dog can dream, can't he?
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:47pm Weems:

Love guessing what's next. After Fingerprintz...James white? ESG?Konk? Liquid Liquid? Heaven 17? Haircut 100?
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:48pm Caryn:

@john: maybe he's in the mayhem show spirit and is pogoing in his sleep?
Wed. 10/10/12 11:49pm Holly in NC:

Pigbag? Bronski Beat? (long shot) ;-)
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:50pm john:

Great thought, Caryn, but for a pogo I'd expect that tiny yippy sleep bark that sounds more like a hiccup but is just a happy dream sound. We should all have one.
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:50pm hey efd:

you can't leave human league out .
Avatar Wed. 10/10/12 11:51pm efd:

Weems, you were one song off with your guess(es). Stand by...
Wed. 10/10/12 11:51pm Holly in NC:

@john - dogs need their dreams. cats & humans also.
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:51pm hey efd:

seconds for john lennon
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:52pm mildred:

@ Holly:
I think we must have been trolling the Pioneer Valley at the same time. I saw both REM and Husker Du at Umass in the 80s, amongst others. The days of the good 'ol UPC and spring concerts that ruled.
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:52pm Caryn:

@john: maybe someone stole his Docksider mid-pogo, so he's not in a "happy yippy bark" mood?
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:53pm john:

Oh gosh yes. It's a happy sleep when he does it. I was really wishing something similar on all of us. Except maybe the cat-chasing. Just end up looking for the Neosporin that way. And Caryn, if that happened, it's fortunate he's only got three legs that touch the ground at the best of times!
  Wed. 10/10/12 11:53pm Julie:

I still adore Bow Wow Wow
Wed. 10/10/12 11:54pm Matt from Springfield:

Haircut 100!
Wed. 10/10/12 11:56pm some other guy:

Wed. 10/10/12 11:56pm Holly in NC:

  Wed. 10/10/12 11:58pm john:

Actually, he's starting now, and a bit of a smile too. Maybe he just knows we're talking about him.
