A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Bonjour Trouble !
Tue. 9/4/12 9:15am Ken From Hyde Park:

I sorry, but I can't make out any of the handwriting on the mushroom sketch. When we were kids, we had a 78 with a Popeye story. I think the story was about it raining hamburgers on Wimpy.
  Tue. 9/4/12 9:18am annie:

i had always thought i was imagining that bluto's original name was brutus..nice to know i'm not crazy
  Tue. 9/4/12 9:22am Mike East:

I just bought Popeye at the grocery store for 5 bucks. I've been on a Robert Altman kick.
Avatar Tue. 9/4/12 9:23am trouble:

the written bits are not important ken. it's all about the mushrooms. john cage was a mushroom enthusiast. BONJOUR pierre!
  Tue. 9/4/12 9:23am annie:

ok, this is too funny, i had the wrong station on and was reading the playlist saying to myself, well, it's john cage, it could be ANYTHING.... haha..
Avatar Tue. 9/4/12 9:23am trouble:

this is from a you tube clip, which is fascinating to watch. also that's why it has that painful steel hiss sound i imagine.

fabulous!

@Annie That sounds like a perfect Cagian moment. Watching one performance while something else plays.

Hello trouble & sensation seekers. There are some wonderful words used in the mushroom world like fimbriate - fringed; fugacious - short-lived; sessile - without a stem

  Tue. 9/4/12 9:39am David Shortell:

@annie
No, the original and true name of the character (created by E.C. Segar in 1932) is Bluto.
It was only for a brief period (a couple of decades after Segar died) that a crappy TV version of the strip gave him that stupid new name. Here's more info:

Good morning! Great article about John Cage in last NYTimes Sunday week in review. Woman who wrote it related it to her OCD and told how it described her anxious mind.

who did TROUBLE say she has crush on, PETER LORRE? (all this MOLD and FUNGI talk makes me wonder about how they reproduce. on recent 7SECOND DELAY, i learned about bedbug's TRAUMATIC INSEMINATION. yeeeeah!!)

The mushroom is my favourite fungus.
If you only eat one, make sure it's humongous.
  Tue. 9/4/12 10:47am hamburger:

heyo - been interrupted - was there a punchline to the the chicken / universe question?
  Tue. 9/4/12 10:49am Cheri Pi:

what about a chicken alarm system? A raccoon sneaks in and a motion detector lights up the coop like a rave. Solar powered of course and the neighbors will love it for it's simple charm.

  Tue. 9/4/12 11:04am bw:

Trouble: I am calling child services!!!
  Tue. 9/4/12 11:07am Jennique:

There is no answer to the chicken/universe question. It is the sound of one hand clapping, or the sound of a tree falling in a forest with no one to hear it, or the sound of an imaginary chicken coop door closing.
Tue. 9/4/12 11:07am jersey boy in nicaragua:

make a balanced weighted shelf for your chickens to roost on, when the last chicken roosts, the shelf drops a bit, releasing the latch on the door, allowing it to close. rube goldberg would love it.

Will allergy pills help with the mildew issue you're experiencing?
Avatar Tue. 9/4/12 11:16am trouble:

perhaps erella, but i don't have any with me. I brought vinyl, cd's and dj icepack this morning. didn't know we were in crisis mold lifestyle here.

  Tue. 9/4/12 11:20am duke:

@trouble icepack There are commercial electronic chicken coop doors. http://www.automaticchickencoopdoor.com/ Not cheap. We once tried to build an electronic cat door to prevent one of the cats from delivering presents of live rodents. It didn't work too well. It was supposed to recognize when the cat has a chipmunk. It either let everything in or nothing.
  Tue. 9/4/12 11:22am Jennique:

marmalade kitty - that Bill Hicks clip is great! I think Bart Simpson borrowed from him in a Simpsons episode.
  Tue. 9/4/12 11:23am john:

Thanks, Pidge. Amazing! I almost puked on my desk.

Not sure if anyone responded re. Mold vs. Mildew but I too was curious about this because I also react to the stuff (which makes me sad cause I love old things found in basements and other spore-ridden locations sometimes) Here is an answer:
