  12:09pm

Onra has been tearing it up lately.
  12:19pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

I guess you looked pretty happy Jorge?
  12:23pm
robyn:

  12:35pm
Duane:

Jan: Heh heh...didn't think anyone would catch that
  12:43pm
poonji:

MrPotatotoheadafunkapotatopus
  12:44pm
kata:

finally made it to my desk, with warm bagel.
  12:47pm
mark vt:

Thanks for the nice show, Duane. Hey I am sitting here and need to order some new checks. I ran out. Usually go to the bank but does anyone here know of a good place online to get them. And safe? Maybe be able to put your own picture on them like something wfmu related.
  12:48pm
Cecile:

I get mine through my bank. They are as uncreative and bland as I can manage.
  12:50pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Was Ace really playing roulette, or was it suicide?
  12:51pm
mark vt:

yeah. maybe I'll just get them from my bank again. I usually just get the bland blue ones.
  12:51pm
Duane:

He was playing Russian roulette backstage at a concert in Houston on Christmas Day 1954. True!
  12:51pm
kata:

Jan, that sounds like an awesome class to teach -- graphic design is my profession too..
  12:53pm
Cecile:

Jan and Kata, I just started Typography 1 last night - taking night classes to change careers in my dotage.
  12:54pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Kata, It's the first time I'm teaching this course. I teach a Senior Proj. Graphic Design class at Pratt,Brooklyn. Been doing that for... Oh my! 13 yrs.
  12:54pm
doca:

hi you all, duane, cecile, a lazy and rainy afternoon here in porto alegre.
  12:54pm
Cecile:

HAHAHAHHA
Kajmere Stage Band.
It's time for the percolator.
  12:55pm
Cecile:

hi, doca!

Jan and Kata, any suggestions for getting good really fast? I don't have a lot time to waste.
  12:56pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Cecile, you talk like you're 80 yrs old or something!
  12:56pm
Cecile:

I'm 51. I need to get going!
  12:57pm
doca:

or like a teenager.
  12:57pm
Cecile:

the youngsters are already nipping at my heels, I can feel it.
  12:57pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Getting really good really fast? Hmm. Innate talent ;)
  12:57pm
Cecile:

ha, doca, a little of both.
  12:58pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Forgive me Cecile, but many people assume that graphic design is "easy," and, well it isn't...
  12:58pm
Oliv:

Cecile: start painting!
  12:59pm
Cecile:

ah, well.
I have been doing exercises out of books and sketching everyday. And trying to remember the mistakes of my abortive early stint at it
  12:59pm
Cecile:

Bad graphic design is!
I'm trying to be halfway decent.
  12:59pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

You should try and take some courses, not online, and hopefully with good teachers
  1:00pm
MenfussMike:

this song is SICKKKKKK
  1:00pm
Cecile:

Oliv, I have been watercolor painting and doing stuff with oil pastels and watercolor pencils.
  1:00pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Learning to be a good graphic designer is an investment, not a thing you simply "pick up." again my apologies...
  1:02pm
Cecile:

I have a good teacher for my Type 1, and am working toward a certificate in Print/Web through my work in a couple years, a few more semesters I should have a 2-yr degree after that.
  1:02pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Okay, off my high horse. I'm 52 btw...
  1:02pm
poonji:

psychofunkascientologyapus
  1:03pm
mark vt:

when I was a very little kid in elementary school I had an art teacher named Mrs Drake. She was probably in her 60's. I loved that lady. I hope art teachers are still around like her. She was kind of crazy but enlightened. At the time I thought graphic design was graphite design. Like the pencils.
  1:03pm
Cecile:

No problem. I just am impatient to get going on something. I have the tools I didn't have when we were putting down type with wax and rubbing down letraset letters for our comps.
  1:03pm
kata:

Cecile, good on you to go for typography, one of my favorite areas in design ! I don't know about learning it "fast," but I'll tell you two things that were very very important to my understanding of it: a letterpress course, and a calligraphy course (or how-to book). Also really fun both of them !
  1:05pm
Cecile:

We have some great letterpress people here, they probably have classes. Calligraphy classes (as opposed to a book) are a good idea, too!
  1:05pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

I love Kon & Amir! So cool...
  1:06pm
Oliv:

Cecile: so it is OK. Do what you wanna but not with computer - just old school, analog way. Than scan it and voila... Such retro way is still used by many.
  1:06pm
Cheri Pi:

Hey Cecile, Duane! Everyone on the comments
board!!! Just had some spicy thai for lunch.
  1:06pm
Andrew:

That song for aretha was amazing...
  1:07pm
Duane:

Hi doca1 Thanx for tuning in :)
  1:07pm
Cecile:

Oliv, yeah, I have been doing that. Or I have at least a pencil sketch I work from. you just can't lay it out the way you can even just scribbling on a piece of paper before you go to the computer.
  1:07pm
Duane:

Hi Cheri Pi..is the real one? HAHA!
  1:08pm
Cecile:

ask her a Voivod trivia question to be sure...
  1:10pm
kata:

you're so right though Jan, it is a deep field of learning and I've been in the biz for many years but still have a lot to learn. Not only that, but the term "graphic design" is a huge umbrella under which so many specialties fall. Even "typography" is too general a term, covers many aspects of type use.

Cecile, I taught myself calligraphy using a few books. I'm still definitely of a novice but there's one book that I found to be really great to dive into. I'll dig up the title here...
  1:11pm
Cecile:

thanks, Kata!
  1:12pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:

Well Bernard "Pretty" Purdie played drums on any number of classics by Aretha, so the song makes sense...
  1:13pm
Cheri Pi:

Yes Duane!!! No spoofers at the moment.
  1:13pm
Cheri Pi:

hahaha! Away is my favorite drummer....
  1:16pm
kata:

oh crap, I almost missed the Prince moment, thanks Duane ! Love it..
  1:19pm
BodegaMan:

a favorite part of the show every Wednesday is the deep Prince cut for the week. Great one.
  1:21pm
mark vt:

Prince was very big back in the day. There was a kid at school and in the neighborhood who looked a LOT like Prince and he was also a huge fan. He had Prince buttons all over, up and down his jacket and he WAS Prince, kind of, to us. We were not even 12 yet at the time.
  1:23pm
seang:

it's 2012-holy shit!
  1:26pm
Clay:

I recently found a nice copy of Andre Cymone's "Living In The New Wave" LP. Actually, it wasn't that good, but it looked cool, and that's 50% (or more!) of the equation. Great show as always Duane.
  1:26pm
mark vt:

The kid also used to do some disturbing things to cats involving tools. And do weird things in his garage and show us what he did after. Not to discredit the real Prince.
  1:28pm
Duane:

Thanx Clay. Is that the one with the "Survivin in the 80's" cut on it? That song isn't bad. But yeah "Dance Electric" was the Andre Cymone solo highlight. 'Cuz it sounded just like Prince.. Ha!
  1:30pm
mark vt:

We were also paper boys and we used to get the papers delivered to his house to pick up and deliver. Even at 5:00 in the morning we would listen to Prince.
  1:32pm
Cecile:

I liked "Living in the New Wave" it was kind of popular around Detroit and Ann Arbor.
  1:32pm
Clay:

I looked it up just now, Duane. Surviving in the 80's was a 1983 LP by Andre Cymone. Here's a link to the title track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdk-DubCMtY Keep up the good work. Apollonia 6 forever!
  1:33pm
kata:

can't find the exact title Cecile, but if I figure it out I'll let you know. I got it out of the library here a couple years ago.
  1:33pm
Cecile:

this is incredible.
  1:34pm
Cecile:

thanks, Kata! Well, off to join the wonderful world of meetings. Stay funky, ya'll.
  1:35pm
mark vt:

I grew up in the South West during the 80's and this paper boy and Prince thing happened in Arizona. He really did look a lot like Prince for an 11 year old kid.
  1:38pm
Barney:

Boogiemonsters before they got all god sound!
  1:38pm
Eli:

Ahoy Boogiemonsters
  1:38pm
Luis:

The Boogies! So slept-on. And I love how the LP cover is a riff on Cal Tjader's Soul Sauce.
  1:39pm
Duane:

I even liked God Sound Barney..that track with Bahamadia was incredible!
  1:40pm
Mike East:

busy today, but wanted to checkin. Thanks for the tunes, Duane!
  1:40pm
Duane:

ladedededeeaaah!
  1:41pm
Duane:

Thanx Mike!
  1:42pm
Barney:

I remember being disappointed overall--mostly because I liked the first one so much, but I will have to go back and listen again. bahamadia is always nice. just have to figure out where I left the tape deck.
  1:49pm
Eli:

Global Goon. You don't hear his tracks often. I'm a fan.
  1:52pm
mark vt:

Speaking of Bahamadia, I lived in the Bahamas as a kid, too. I have many stories about that time. Here I am like an old man sitting on the porch telling stories. Must be something about Duane's music and his show. He sets the mood for a party. And I turn into the crazy story guy at parties.
  2:05pm
Andrew:

YES. This is an excellent remix. Good call. Have you heard the Move D Workshop 13 album? That has some serious funk.
  2:09pm
Duane:

Yes that a great album. Move D is incredible as a DJ as well
  2:12pm
kata:

is that the Clay Pigeon visiting the comment board ? hello Clay ! :)
  2:18pm

  2:23pm
Clay:

@Kata. It's me. I'm a Duane fan!
  2:23pm
Duane:

kurious: Yes Escort is great. I've known those guys for years and they work really hard to make that ish tight! respect!
  2:26pm
FCC:

Duane, We don't monitor the comments board. You may TYPE "shit".
  2:27pm
Paul Ryan:

You may type it ... for now.
  2:29pm
Duane:

FCC: I think I like the word ISH better than Shit. It's sexier ya know?
  2:33pm
FCC:

Yes, sexy is one of our favorite fetishes. We monitor very carefully for sexy. Thank you for bringing your use to our attention.
  2:42pm
Jan Audun Uretsky:
