Dan's rotary dialing digression made me think of the old days of seven-digit local landline phone numbers, when I was a wee brat. Yep, the first three numbers in a seven-digit # were called "exchanges," and small towns, or clumps of towns, often all had the same "exchange." My town was so big that it had (at least) four exchanges! I still remember those four three-digit #s.
