Playlist for Bryce - June 19, 2009

Fridays Noon - 3pm on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

Fri. 6/19/09 12:29pm From: perrin

what year is Pharoah''s Seven by Seven recoreded?

Fri. 6/19/09 12:31pm From: bryce

perrin!! it was a super early one, before he really started skronking — recorded in '64!

Fri. 6/19/09 12:32pm From: Marshall Stacks

FYI: Ali Akbar Khan died. It's major news in the Pakistani dailies today, but despite the fact that he lived (and died) in San Rafael, there's nothing in the Bay Area papers.

Fri. 6/19/09 12:35pm From: perrin

Sad. My favorite record was "Duet" between Khan and violinist L. Subramaniam, which was recorded in berkeley, I think.

Fri. 6/19/09 12:36pm From: Parq

Bon voyage to Ustad AAK. He was on the Concert for Bangladesh, which was one of Ravi Shankar's two most famous US performances (the other being the one captured in "Monterey Pop"). Marshall, maybe the San Fran papers haven't gotten it out yet.

Fri. 6/19/09 12:37pm From: bryce

wow. oh man, first i've heard....

Fri. 6/19/09 12:39pm From: Jed

Fri. 6/19/09 12:41pm From: dc pat

for those of you on Doug's list this morning, I found out what the coincidence thing meant: my friend and office mate was laid off this morning--the bullshit is flying. Apparently, Get Along Little Dogies means "so long hard worker, we're re-organizing today!"

Fri. 6/19/09 12:43pm From: Parq

Whoa, pat. Blows. This economy involves watching people fall to the left and right of you and wondering when, if ever, your number's up. Disconcerting to say the least.

Fri. 6/19/09 12:43pm From: Louisville Dan

Holy Carp! This Marion Brown cut is fantastic!

Fri. 6/19/09 12:44pm From: bryce

humus for annie!

jed, that was i. g. farben. but i look forward to your consonant clusters.

Fri. 6/19/09 12:46pm From: Mark

Agreed RE: the Brown / Bennink. Someone please *PLEASE* start a compaign to re-issue the portions of Marion's discography which are out of print while he is still with us, and can benefit from it...

Fri. 6/19/09 12:51pm From: dc pat

problem is, they're saying he wasn't laid off because of budget constraints!! He's being replaced by another fekkin manager!

Fri. 6/19/09 12:54pm From: The Man

Another manager? What's not to like?

Fri. 6/19/09 12:54pm From: dc pat

doesn't make any sense at all but I could use a tune by Edward Tudor Pole.

Fri. 6/19/09 12:55pm From: dc pat

Fri. 6/19/09 12:58pm From: bryce

"All About Jazz" lists the category for European Echoes as "Straight-Ahead/Mainstream/Bop/Hard Bop/Cool". Hope a bunch of neo-con jazzers buy in...

Fri. 6/19/09 2:08pm From: bryce

oh man, the whole album is soooo lovely.

Fri. 6/19/09 2:08pm From: perrin

(wow, from espdisk.com) When MIJ, aka Jim Holmberg was found by ESP, yodeling by the fountain in Washington Square Park, on a hot, summer Sunday afternoon, he explained that an auto accident had fractured his skull and impaired his hearing. But it had also altered his perceptions and enabled him to do things that he did not understand, but which worked musically. The next day ESP sent him into the studio. With Onno Scholtze's help, Mij explored the possibilities of multiple reverb to provide a series of echoes for his yodeling. When the project was completed, both participants continued to reverberate. They may be reverberating still.

Fri. 6/19/09 2:09pm From: bryce
