Currently in my car, so I can’t check my vinyl collection; yet I know I scored only ONE Barnabé album over these many years - “Arrival” 1986? perhaps? I emailed you yesterday, Gary, about the remarkable NYT obituary for Marjorie Perloff, still another literary theorist -- along with Paul de Man, Geoffrey Hartman, J. Hillis Miller, Harold Bloom -- who gets celebrity treatment from the mainstream taste makers. She was sui generis, though I associate her with her friend Charles Altieri, whose work I have admired for ages. When I entered law school I discovered that Altieri's daughter was one of my classmates. She kindly introduced me to him. I forwarded her the link to the obit and remarked that as much as I enjoyed and learned from Perloff in certain ways, I much preferred her dad's work, and still do. She reported back that her dad concurs with my assessment, naturally.

When he retired from Cal, she invited me to take what I want from his library. I cherish these Altieri volumes that include cryptic little scratches of marginalia by his hand, his comments about poetry that supplied material for his theoretical work.

May I ask a question of the assembled Bodega experts? I picked up a used CD by the Master Musicians of Jajouka (2000, eponymous) produced by Talvin Singh. It seems to me to be not enough Jajouka and too much Singh, who co-writes the songs and plays a lot of keyboards, drum parts, etc. I find most of it uninspiring and fusiony. Am I missing something here? If they would just chant and pound their drums, I would be thrilled.

That is so, tim, in the realm of cultural anthropology. Per OED, an early connotation was: "That has the lowest amount necessary to produce a particular effect; minimal; insignificant. In early use spec. (Psychology): of or relating to a limen (limen n.), relating to the point beyond which a sensation becomes too faint to be experienced."

In food you can add ingredients that are not percieved but affect the perception of other flavors. WHich might be an opportunity to bring the conversation back to music and wonder if musicians will play at sub liminal sounds.

@Dean, there may be faint stimuli that are registered at some level and have an effect on you but don’t reach consciousness.
