My dad had this Louis Jordan record on 78rpm. When I was a kid I used to play it all the time until one day I tried to put it on the spindle and it literally shattered. He also had Bill Haley's Shake Rattle And Roll on 78rpm...and I accidentally sat on it. Love The Tympany Five!

Agreed! We had an old console turntable and radio combo unit, a big old wooden thing, and the turntable still had 4 speeds! I never had a 16rpm record to play on it. Sounded great with my dad's 78's, the ones I didn't break. I still have a few.

I don't know much about them, only that they could hold like 40 minutes per side which was much more than the 33 1/3. It was cool to be able to slow down records to 16 to hear/learn guitar solos though

Those 15" records were put out by the military. IDK what speed those played at, only seen them in in record stores. Also don't quote me on this but some of the early Nat Cole Trio recordings were made specifically for armed forces radio and originally came out on these big discs.

Yes they did, and it's a fascinating story how an army officer in the signal corps brought some of the tape machines to the US from Germany, and how it eventually got to Bing Crosby and then to Les Paul, and the rest is history. Bing was interested in the new tape technology so he could record his radio programs at home instead of traveling. Bing financed a lot of that technology with tape and tape machines. I think the army officer's name was Dick Ranger. Germany actually had vari-speed technology in use during World War 1, for spies to broadcast messages across the Atlantic via code, which they'd record and transmit at super high speeds that couldn't be deciphered. Fascinating stuff.
