	12:11pm gf2002: ↳ Revolution Rabbit Nov63 @12:06 Yes they did, and it's a fascinating story how an army officer in the signal corps brought some of the tape machines to the US from Germany, and how it eventually got to Bing Crosby and then to Les Paul, and the rest is history. Bing was interested in the new tape technology so he could record his radio programs at home instead of traveling. Bing financed a lot of that technology with tape and tape machines. I think the army officer's name was Dick Ranger. Germany actually had vari-speed technology in use during World War 1, for spies to broadcast messages across the Atlantic via code, which they'd record and transmit at super high speeds that couldn't be deciphered. Fascinating stuff.

Bing was interested in the new tape technology so he could record his radio programs at home instead of traveling. Bing financed a lot of that technology with tape and tape machines. I think the army officer's name was Dick Ranger. Germany actually had vari-speed technology in use during World War 1, for spies to broadcast messages across the Atlantic via code, which they'd record and transmit at super high speeds that couldn't be deciphered. Fascinating stuff.
