  12:04pm kuba:

this photo is right up my alley, by the way. concrete, cinder, yes please
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Handy Haversack:

Weirdest thing -- Kate went to the PO yesterday to mail five packages, and apparently they only charged her for one. (You know the ones, Phillippe.) Then a postal worker rang the bell this morning, and he came in and had the packages with him and told me what had happened -- and then took cash, went back to the PO, got them sorted and stamped, and just came back to bring me change and the receipt! Way to go, USPS!

Lucky you, DrJ!

Hello, DiL and beer-thinking coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm WR:

Just heard SparksThank God It's Not Christmas so it was fresh in my mind and seems very similar to Pannach & Kunert Berlin - Dein Winter ist kein Spaß. Perhaps just both mining the rich vein of Brecht/Weill...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm spodiodi:

aloha, David y WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm coelacanth∅:

hi David (iL)!

. . . i think it'd be fun if you played a set of songs, each sung in a different language, and each having beer mentioned somewhere within
and everyone tries to spot it

Enjoying the playlist photo today. Industrial objects ready for use or recently abandoned. Desolate (no leaves) but vibrant nature about the now minimally used but vital rail tracks.
Avatar 1:07pm Sem:

Ah, you must mean vaguenog, coel. Yummy, is it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Stanley:

David. Looks like it's just me and my large can of 18% stout, one of these dark evenings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm David Dichelle:

Glad you like it, WR, and well put!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Handy Haversack:

Stanley, that looks serious!

Greetings, David. See upthread for the story of how the USPS saved the T-shirts!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm doctorjazz:

I'm ok, David, thanks! Turns out to be a false positive rapid test. A PCR done at the same time (more accurate, but takes days to get a result) came back negative, and a second PCR as well. So I'm out of quarantine for the past 2 days (Glory Hallelujah!).
Avatar 1:09pm Bas NL:

Stanley, I've got 6 more hours before I am "off the clock" and drew the short straw to be the one on call for the holiday weekend but contemplating if a similar beverage might brace me well to sit my post by the computer and phone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Stanley:

Nice one, Doctor. So glad you can mix with your family again.
Avatar 1:14pm Bas NL:

A moersleutel is a 'nut wrench' BTW. Hence the sign..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Handy, Stanley and Brian. Though I do miss having room service left at my door each meal (and my family misses not having to hear the music I play).

good news, @dr jz!
Avatar 1:15pm βrian:

What's for lunch today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Stanley:

WR - if 'on call' means sitting by the phone without having to dash off somewhere, then go for it. It'll help.

Since Macao has been claimed by China after UK's lease expired in … was it 1999 or 1997? It was 2 years before or after Hong Kong... anyway, since it has been under China's rule, I have not heard anything about it. Like maybe it is no longer anything but an island that is part of China?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm chresti:

Were firecrackers made in Macao, at some point?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:26pm doctorjazz:

He's an amazing mandolin player, was called The Charlie Parker on the mandolin at one point (or something along those lines). He's no slouch on clarinet either, but I find him more exciting on mandolin.
Avatar 1:27pm northguineahills:

Macau was a Portuguese colony given back to the Chinese in 1999. It still has it's internet domain suffix.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm David Dichelle:

Yes, it also still maintains certain symbols of sovereignty, sports teams and the like, and its own internet domain status etc. In any case, I'm following this list for the series, which is as good an arbitrary list as any: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm David Dichelle:

It was a camera mounted on the hood of a sports car and the driver going just absolutely hammer down from the Arc de Triomphe to Sacré Coeur at dawn. No permits, no stopping other traffic, no warning the pigeons. It was great. I wonder if anyone ever interneted it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm spodiodi:

Avatar 1:51pm βrian:

@Handy: that seems familar. Not a motorcycle?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Handy Haversack:

Definitely a European sports car, βrian. The title of the film is made clear at the end when the driver gets out of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Doug Schulkind:

Ṁ€r̃r̃ý Ẍm̀åš, David and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm doctorjazz:

We're in a mandolin-y kind of mood today.
Gotta run and pick up bagels and fixins, catch you all later!
Avatar 1:54pm Bas NL:

Merry happiness Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Handy Haversack:

Later on, doctorjazz!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm Carmichael:

Avatar 2:00pm Sem:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Dougmaster Drummer!
Avatar 2:01pm Bas NL:

Cameroon! I couldn't have guessed.. fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Handy Haversack:

(Well, relatively speaking, at least.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm David Dichelle:

Handy: I think you were closest, unless I missed something...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Handy Haversack:

And still something like 1,000 miles off, David!
Avatar 2:03pm Hubig Pie:

I guess I gotta pony up 20 nickels now. I'll send into the next 'FMU pledge drive
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm chris in the redwoods:

thanks for sharing that video, Handy. i look forward to watching it later. vroom vroom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm David Dichelle:

Hubig: Sounds like a deal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Handy Haversack:

Me, too, Chris! I don't think I've seen it in 15+ years. We tracked down a car magazine that had an add through which we could order the DVD. I think it had been banned?
Avatar 2:07pm βrian:

Here, too: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm coelacanth∅:

Handy Thanks! - later today i'll watch it
Avatar 2:08pm βrian:

Just watched it again with our little human. Almost made her carsick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm spodiodi:

i love that film... i guess i came across it in the early 2000s. have always been able to find it when i wanted it (i think i had a copy locally(?))
Avatar 2:09pm βrian:

One or two close calls, there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm spodiodi:

havent checked the link, but has to eb the same one, based on your description, Handy ... i've been busy watching some old footage of one of my own virtual races at monaco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Handy Haversack:

How do you virtual race, spodi? Like ... with a game controller? (Or joystick, as they were called when I last video gamed.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm spodiodi:

you can, Handy, but i almost always used a racing wheel and pedals (except when i broke my ankle)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm spodiodi:

i mostly used GranTurismo 5 running on a PS3 at the time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Handy Haversack:

Ah, a real set-up! A friend of mine had something similar for a space-dogfighting game.

I kind of peaked with Dig-Dug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm coelacanth∅:

this is (kind of) why i was talkng about gopro 2 days ago (then someone brought gopro up in the comments yesterday)
i wanted to mount one on a bike helmet... except i wanted to make movies of a more meditative nature. action-meditation. something like that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm spodiodi:

action-meditation has a nice ring to it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm doctorjazz:

I kind of peaked with Pong...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm spodiodi:

pong was my gateway vid
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm Brian in UK:

About to do a family Zoom, so All good wishes to everyone & stay safe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Handy Haversack:

Be well, Brian! Enjoy the days!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm David Dichelle:

You too, Brian - all the best!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm spodiodi:

cheers, Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm coelacanth∅:

Cheers Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm David Dichelle:

I have fond memories of Pong Hockey - the same thing but with a smaller opening to score at the ends, if I recall correctly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm David (in London):

Ah, I was going to go with the Seychelles as my RR selection. Curses, wrong again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm David Dichelle:

Not to worry, David and all - the chances of guessing correctly get better every week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm chresti:

Best wishes, Brian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm David (in London):

David, it's never been so nice to be wrong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm David Dichelle:

Glad you're enjoying it, David!
Avatar 2:29pm Sem:

Lovin' the musical scenery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm David Dichelle:

:)
  2:30pm Funky16Corners:

Hey David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm David Dichelle:

Hey there, Larry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Handy Haversack:

Getting closer and closer to the Gambia. I just need to stick to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm David Dichelle:

I could try aiming a dart at a world map, but it might be hard to hit the Gambia precisely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm chresti:

Love that Bebey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm David Dichelle:

Chresti: He was brilliant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm Handy Haversack:

Easier with a cannon from the river, apparently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm David (in London):

Handy, I like your strategy of sticking with your option and soldiering on. I'm just a flibbertigibbet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Handy Haversack:

I just can't face the feeling of the Gambia coming up when I have chosen Uruguay or Yakutsk or (gasp!) Senegal.
  2:37pm Funky16Corners:

Testify! Coming up at 3pm, to be followed at 5PM by the First Annual Testify! 30 Minute Christmas Special! https://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/99536
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:39pm David Dichelle:

There was a time when they were planning a Federation of Senegambia, but that didn't happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Alex In Illinois:

Back from taking the dog out. Of course Macao was a Portuguese colony, I don't know what I was thinking.

I have met people from there back in the early 1990s. Was known for its casinos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm David Dichelle:

Alex: Yes, and an interesting Portuguese-Chinese creole culture, which is sadly disappearing.
Avatar 2:48pm βrian:

Portuguese-Chinese creole implies tasty food to me.
Avatar 2:49pm Sem:

I wonder how rare the music of Tanganyika is? Fewer than 3 years as an independent country, but a cool flag.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm David Dichelle:

ßrian: No doubt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm doctorjazz:

The hits keep coming!
  2:49pm Funky16Corners:

Cameroooooooooon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm chris in the redwoods:

oh yes, the funk is strong with this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm David Dichelle:

Wouldn't be complete without it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm spodiodi:

this one is sampled in at least a couple of songs in my spotty memory
Avatar 2:52pm Bas NL:

Grrreat tracks! Cameroon is now a worthy new member of the United States of Random Road.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm David Dichelle:

Sem: Yes, Tanzania will cover both Tanganyika and Zanzibar, I guess.
  2:53pm Funky16Corners:

One of my faves, and very sadly an early Covid casualty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm spodiodi:

thanks, David!
killer set!
great show!
safe and happy holidays to you and everyone else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Handy Haversack:

I gotta start vacuuming, but I can't leave the funk!

Thanks, David! Another great ride. Let's go again!

Happy and peaceful and merry days to you all, fellow riders. I hope you have love and plenty. Next year, we can get back to getting angry.
