Avatar 9:40am TDK60:

Hello Chris Albertyn, where are you stationed?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

When you get to be our age, Brian in UK, pruning is a necessity.
Avatar 9:41am βrian:

We're plum out of prunes here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

Happy to see you, Jeff Golick! (I just noticed how close you are to being Jeff Garlick.)

Avatar 9:43am northguineahills:

I feel like in Bodega Pop last Wednesday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

@TDK60
Chris Albertyn hails from Durban, South Africa. We'll hear him back on Give the Drummer Some in two weeks with another sizzling hour of sounds from South African and anywhere else he choses!
Avatar 9:44am TDK60:

Ah, Durban. At what time is his show and its name?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Stanley:

Nice Nusrat there, Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Webhamster Henry:

Bouncing cat is in sync with the tabla - very nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Doug Schulkind:

@Stanley
I leave the mean Nusrat tracks for the other shows.

@TDK60
Chris Albertyn is a special guest co-host on my sho. On the last Friday of every month he takes over the middle hour of the show. On 27 November, he will present his third monthly installment.

Here's a qawwali track from a Bollywood soundtrack...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Webhamster Henry:

@doug thanks for stirring the mud in the drummer stream a little. I like fill-ins, co-hosts (like the Uncle Michael-Gaylord show) and specials like the upcoming Susie Ibarra Birthday Special.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

This is an ocarina like instruments. Lotsa little holes. Lotsa joy.
Avatar 10:16am Listener Gregory:

The fine folks at Wattle did not fully exercise their imaginations when calling this album "Seq Name Artist Album Genre Year Duration Comment Bitrate Track #," in my humble opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

Up next, pan pipes from the Solomon Islands. You would be wise to keep listening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am fred:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am chresti:

Happy Friday the 13th!
Avatar 10:22am StringOFperils:

Playing ocarina to an overhead reaper-drone, also not a good idea. Ocarina probably has no place in the theatre of mutual annihilation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am fred:

@Doug: it's a composition PhD, I would need to understand more than I do to be able to translate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Uncle Michael:

This here's a wattle, the emblem of our land.
You can stick it in a bottle or hold it in your hand.
Avatar 10:31am StringOFperils:

They're hallowed grounds if you look at them in the right way, sinner.
Avatar 10:32am Listener Gregory:

I think the main advantage of an ocarina is its size, as you can carry it around in a pocket or your pack and then have it when you need it. Bass saxophones not so much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

Roland Kirk on horn here, interpreting the lyric.

Have you heard the miraculous Ellington/Blanton duets? Just the two of them? Oh my GOD, peak humanity!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

listener Rey, hooray!
Avatar 10:41am bobdc:

I have the "Blanton Webster Years" boxed set, which is how I could recognize Blanton's tone on those first few notes before I recognized Duke Ellington or the song made famous to our generation by Bugs Bunny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
Oh wow. There is nothing better. A towering collection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am listener Rey:

Someone's Rockin My Dreamboat is another cartoon song that I had never heard in its entirety until I heard the Jackie Paris version around year 2000
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

(Even if you didn't purchase it at Tower)
Avatar 10:43am Listener Gregory:

For me, it is Duke's crashing chords at the beginning of the song that identify it for me. Few jazz groups would use that kind of dissonance. And I did buy mine at Tower!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Webhamster Henry:

Little Red Riding Hood was designed by Hank Ketcham, which is why she kinda looks like Margaret from Dennis The Menace.
Avatar 10:43am bobdc:

I guess a big part of Blanton's historical importance was that signficant jazz bassists before him were coming from the tuba (second lines and all that), but he was coming from the violin, so he had real string player chops, especially with a bow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

Preach, bobdc, preach! No one had much explored the bass beyond mere time-keeping before Blanton.
Avatar 10:47am northguineahills:

I've been Facetiming the every night the last week w/ my friend who is storing my records. We've gone through half. I'm getting rid of 90% of them. We're trying to avoid Discogs if possible. Trying to do a portal live for some of them. We'll probably have them cataloged by next week. If anyone has any suggestions for a decent platform, I'd be welcome to them.

Jimmy Blanton died from tuberculosis at 23. The other genius bass innovator, Scott LaFaro, died from an auto wreck at 25. Two inconceivable losses.

What happened to the old quiet screamers, and did the new ones even ask?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

The Old Quiet Screamers®, brought to you by Jeff Golick. Back after this important message.
Avatar 10:57am Listener Gregory:

Old quiet screamers never die, their voices just fade. Then they become old quiet pipsqueaks, which is really not the same.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

A girl in college once borrowed my Miles Davis Live at the Plaza LP (which features a version of "My Funny Valentine") and she never returned it. It makes me steaming mad to this day and I can't listen to My Funny Valentine and not think of it.

Fuuuuck! I'm so mad!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

My Funny Valentine as my father's favorite ballad. One year for his birthday, I made him a mixtape of many different versions. This was prior to 2011, so this Arthur Doyle performance wasn't included.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Lewis:

one of my earliest memories of cassette tapes is my Dad making mix tapes of covers... (didn't know the words "mix tape" or "covers" at the time...)
Avatar 11:01am Listener Gregory:

I wasn't crazy about the opening of this track, but I stuck with it, and it has paid off!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Rob Weisberg:

Yes TDK - Congolese via Paris but he had a very distinctive style!

Hi TDK60 and Doug and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

I bought this Souzy Kesseya record in a cramped little record stall in the shadow of Sacré-Cœur. The record seller spoke little English. He made the universal "which do you prefer?" sign with upturned hands, and said simply, "Slow or fast?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Uncle Michael:

And you said "yes".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

Yes yes a thousand times YES!
