Avatar 7:27pm TDK60:

hmmnn...those last 2 song titles...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Gary:

[*slow nod*]
Avatar 7:29pm LambdaCalculus:

Did I see something about taco carts on every corner? Can that be a thing now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm alanr:

wow.... that was awesome (6LA8) so unexpected. Thanks for introducing something totally unexpected.
  7:30pm Mark R:

Man, that 6LA8 was some pretty trippy stuff. I didn't know they were gobbling acid by the handful in Pakistan. Very groovy.
Avatar 7:31pm Honeybear:

I only visit taco trucks if they're Franco-approved
Avatar 7:31pm βrian:

For taco reference:
en.wikipedia.org...
  7:35pm Mark R:

I forget which Republican jackass warned there would be taco trucks on every corner as if it was a bad thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Webhamster Henry:

A bodega on every corner!
Avatar 7:35pm LambdaCalculus:

YES!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm chresti:

Our new favorite , Mexicali tacos, has cauliflower tacos for me and pork al pastor burritos for Franco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Gary:

Mark R.!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Gary:

Alanr! Hey there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Ike:

I moved to Sunset Park, Brooklyn, a few years ago specifically for the promise of taco trucks on every corner. Although they're not quite on EVERY corner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm spodiodi:

cauliflower tacos? nice. love the stuff. need to try a taco
Avatar 7:40pm TDK60:

chresti & franco-you often get me hungry..
  7:40pm Mark R:

Republicans are so out of touch with what Americans actually want. They say, "Socialism," and like 60% of the country goes, "Cool!" And then the R's are like, "Wait, what?" Their whole playbook is out of the 50s. Everyone who agrees with them is dying off, and everyone replacing that generation thinks Biden is a too right wing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm spodiodi:

we've been eating orange cauliflower recently, since the white vanished (temporarily)
  7:41pm Mark R:

I recognize that I just made several wild, unsubstantiated assertions. Besides, we don't do politics here (mostly). We were talking about tacos.
  7:42pm Mark R:

For my non-vegetarian friends, I'm making some beef stew which is taking a helluva lot longer than I thought it would, but on the plus side, it smells MARVELOUS.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm spodiodi:

i didn't even want to mention the color of our current cauliflower
  7:43pm Mark R:

Jogi De Naal sounds like it would be delicious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm chresti:

TDK60, sorry, it's supper time.
Avatar 7:44pm TDK60:

No prob chresti, just jestin.'
Avatar 7:44pm βrian:

Tonight's pandemic dinner is chil con pescado.

Home-canned tomatoes, factory-canned beans, mahi-mahi, and so on.

Short-grain whole rice to accompany.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Gary:

I have just put some of the chili I made before the show into a bowl with a tortilla I heated on the burner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm spodiodi:

had more delicious masoor dal for lunch and Regular Dinner in 2.25h from now
Avatar 7:46pm TDK60:

Mark R -yr comment at 7:40 I tend to agree with. Also, the prez. has warned you not to read Howard Zinn. k?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm spodiodi:

you sup early, chresti! (i'm jealous (right now) ;) )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm chresti:

The cauliflower in my taco looked kind of yellow, maybe from the garlic sauce.
ßrian, sounds yummy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm schmutz:

howdy! ha, just popped sweet 'tato enchiladas in the oven here
Avatar 7:48pm Honeybear:

Halal Bodega atcha. Greetings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm spodiodi:

never tried it, chresti, but it looks good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:08pm Gary:

WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm spodiodi:

actually, i may have had something similar at an indian buffet ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ been a long time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm spodiodi:

rip, buffets :~(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm WR:

Palak paneer, palak aloo, mutter paneer, etc etc. Yum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm spodiodi:

i never asked what any of it was called, but ate everything they put out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm chresti:

Has a lot of ghee in it, and cheese, love that cheese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm chresti:

WR, don't think I've tried the other paneers.
Avatar 8:15pm Honeybear:

then again, this show has subliminally reminded me that I still have some fresh curry leaf + a good tomato or two... so I think it's gonna be a dal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm WR:

www.nationalheraldindia.com...

Masoor/ moong dal warning issued. Science or trade war fodder?
Avatar 8:22pm Honeybear:

(checking)
Avatar 8:24pm Honeybear:

well these mong dals are allegedly organic, and are from a market I trust (the dual specialty shop - which I'm sure @Gary knows for sure)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Gary:

First Ave?
Avatar 8:26pm TDK60:

Gary, what era is this Pakistani film music?
Avatar 8:26pm Honeybear:

@gary - yup
Avatar 8:27pm Honeybear:

also, they're from india while the glysophate warning (if still valid) applies (or applied) to dals important (strangely enough) from canada and australia apparently
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm chresti:

Sounds safe, Honeybear, Maybe there's a way of removing traces of pesticide?
Avatar 8:28pm Honeybear:

but yeah, food is scary - it's all a big numbers game
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Gary:

TDK: late 70s -80s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Gary:

I'm hearing a bit of RD Burman influence from the 70s throughout these
Avatar 8:31pm Honeybear:

@chresti - I doubt it - glysophate is nasty stuff, by all accounts. but in general, it's really difficult to know (where) exactly our foodstuffs come frome, let alone how they were stored (plastic containers, etc) and/or modified along the way
Avatar 8:34pm TDK60:

Thanks Gary. I was guessing '60s-'70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm Gary:

it could be earlier in the 70s -- some of the Burman stuff this is referencing is early to mid-70s. I mean this one has Sholay written all over it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm WR:

Sorry, but my mind keeps telling me this episode is wacky paki spectacular
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm chresti:

Wacky paki spacti.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm spodiodi:

i wasn't aware "paki" was slur for a while (tsk tsk -- i know you're both good people, and didn't intend to use it as such, but that's what it is (i think))
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm spodiodi:

probably worth mentioning here, in The Realm of The Easily Offended / super-enlightened¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm spodiodi:

i'm going to remove my enter key
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm spodiodi:

*applause*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Gary:

Heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm WR:

Has always been common to have popular movies released in multiple versions for each language group. Hindi, urdu, bengali, so on. Sometimes just redubbed voices, sometimes completely reshot and partially rewritten. And the split between Pakistan & India has been at times so rancorous that no respect of copyright was bothered with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm chresti:

I didn't know it was a slur, either.
  8:53pm northguineahills:

Any music from the Kalash people? One of the few non-Muslim peoples in Pakistan and they claim to be descended from Alexander the Great’s soldiers that settled there, and have belief structure that is somewhere b/tn the Greek pantheon and other paganism, Zoroastrianism, and Islam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Gary:

Ah, no, I didn't know about them, I'm embarrassed to admit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm WR:

True that Paki can be a slur in some contexts. One reason I apologized in advance for my comment. On the other hand I live surrounded by stores with signs advertising themselves as Indo-Paki. And I was apologizing for characterizing Gary's cinema selections as wacky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Gary:

They are decidedly wacky tho
Avatar 8:58pm TDK60:

Interesting that an ancient religion like Zoroastrianism still is around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm coelacanth∅:

hey Gary and all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Gary:

Coelacanth∅!
  9:02pm northguineahills:

I dated a girl for a year whose family was Zoroastrian and fled Iran after the revolution.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm WR:

On a food chat board i was criticized for referring to Bangladeshi speaking Bengali as Bangla while I can go to the corner and get the free weekly Bangla News. But point taken spodiodi. I think Paki as a slur grew mostly in the UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm coelacanth∅:

i think the easily offended or those acting to defend the *potentially* offended are in most cases just control freaks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm spodiodi:

all good, WR! (the "tsk tsk" was meant with humor and love. i figured it might be less known than other slurs. trivia -- it was featured in the (last?) Queen movie, in a non-flattering way, nodding to the 70s-80s problem/use in UK)

the list of slurs is long en.wikipedia.org...

i vote that next we tackle "Kraut" ;) good luck, here in The Realm of Krautrock (a legit use, like many others)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm spodiodi:

aloha coel∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm spodiodi:

as a wacky control freak, i agree with coelacanth∅
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm spodiodi:

i'm also part Kraut (used in the non-slur sense)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm part kraut also∅:

hey spodi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm spodiodi:

also part Paleface and Indian (alarm alert debate!), and more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm coelacanth∅:

...and part mick
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm spodiodi:

part Mick
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm spodiodi:

indeed
Avatar 9:14pm Honeybear:

I disagree with (though am not offended by) what coelacanth∅ said. that said I think intent matters - and I don't detect any bad intent in what's been posted here
  9:14pm rw:

Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm Gary:

I'm part Celt and part Angle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm coelacanth∅:

spodi the thing about the natives that europeans brutally stole this continent from is that they are no more "native americans" than they are "indians".
they are neither.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm spodiodi:

yeah, coel, that one is likely to find no consensus any time soon.

I AM ONE PLANET PEOPLE

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm spodiodi:

my neighborhood where i grew up had a big irish vs italians thing... too funny, all of it. what we should really be discussing is The Case Against Reality: Why Evolution Hid the Truth from Our Eyes www.goodreads.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm spodiodi:

a dna test my late aunt took said that our *very* Catholic family also has some Jewish origins as well. just try and offend me. just try!
Avatar 9:25pm TDK60:

I recall a an anecdote. A historian I heard lecture said, in response to the idea of racism in England toward African migrants, that there were Africans in Britain long before the English even existed; in the Roman Legions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm coelacanth∅:

true Honeybear
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm WR:

4 micks and a mutt went to a White Castle at 3am, back when there was a counter you sat at and ate at like in a diner. 2 micks had to restrain 1 mick while 1 mick and the mutt (me) had to reassure the African American cooks no insult or trouble intended when the one too drunk mick went crazy when asked how do you want your paddies (patties). True story. It was funny the next day but scary at 3am.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Gary:

Hey, here's an idea: Stick around after this show for the Spectacular Sam Segal and If You Lose Your Horse! Tonight's show promises to dew right by you: "From the Dew of the Heavens and the Love of the Horse" wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm coelacanth∅:

hahaha "how do you want your patties, paddies?"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm spodiodi:

whew, for a sec, i thought you meant kooks, WR (was about to offer further enlightenment ;) ;) ;) -- i hope you know i'm part klown too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm spodiodi:

i really want to tell a lame joke featuring italian slurs, but i will resist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm coelacanth∅:

i know at least one mostly irish guy who would've reacted the same way. drunken mess, he was. last i knew (around feb) he'd gotten some control of himself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm WR:

The cook just said how do you want your patties. The paddy word was heard by our drunk companion.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm WR:

Take care NGH. Laters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm coelacanth∅:

i'd bet the majority of people never even heard of "paddy" used as a "racial" slur.

certainly many people that applies to, but yes, maybe not "in most cases".
