Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Gary:

Hey there, zzzm, Jeff, and Spodiodi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Jeff Golick:

I remember the turntable thing happening on the East Coast, at least. Got to interview Christian Marclay for a now-defunct music site in the late 90s-ish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Gary:

Oh, wow -- that's awesome, Jeff! I'd love to read that someday, if you still have the text version
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm alanr:

take us back to SoundLab! (NYC)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm Jeff Golick:

I'm sure I don't. Gone with the digital wind, alas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Gary:

AlanR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Jeff Golick:

(I'm also sure there are much better things out there on CM.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm chresti:

Hi Lambda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Gary:

Well, I have that OnByWith or whatever it's called, which is pretty good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm Rich in Washington:

been listening to lots of DJ Spooky lately, who I listened to a lot in the late 90s. His whole ouvre is so diverse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm coelacanth∅:

hey Gary & Bodegatrons
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Rich in Washington:

hey, coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Gary:

  7:12pm northguineahills:

Love this DJ Spooky! He’s not a nice lad . Punched a friend in the face and my friend put him down. Random: he did A Gap ad for the MYA. dj Shadow!
  7:12pm rw:

Hi! To my knowledge, I've never heard the term, Turntablism. Always feel a step or two (or more!) behind y'all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm coelacanth∅:

is that Rob Swift thing a put-on or was he really talking to a bunch of comatose people?
  7:12pm northguineahills:

The best of Davis, CA.
Avatar 7:12pm tim abdellah:

Howdy Bodega Hopsters!

This Kid Koala track rules!
Avatar 7:16pm LambdaCalculus:

Poor Charlie Brown getting all those rocks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm coelacanth∅:

he should toss them through the windows of the houses they came from
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Gary:

James!!!
  7:21pm northguineahills:

When they got into the fight ,
They were on tour in Europe..
Kid Koala! (Saw him first open for Radiohead. He had a camera above him so you could see his turntabilism in action.
  7:21pm northguineahills:

I actually have this Vadim on vinyl.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Gary:

@NGH: Sweet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Ike:

I know I should go for a walk, but dang, I'd rather stay here and listen to this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Gary:

Ike!
  7:26pm rw:

NGH, if you had TWO copies you could get some turntablism on. There. Now I've used the word turntablism in a sentence twice. Maybe three times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm chresti:

I really like Madlib.
  7:27pm northguineahills:

@RW: I’m selling most of my vinyl. So if you want some. I’ll put a links up soon in my profile.
  7:29pm northguineahills:

I have a final job interview tomorrow that pays really well in FL, w/ full benefits. As long as Inpass the background test, it’s mine (round six of interviews):
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm chresti:

Swifilating a cassette.

  7:31pm northguineahills:

Oh, wish me luck, I need it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm chresti:

You have extremely good luck, ngh.
  7:32pm rw:

Good luck ngh! I'm sure you'll do great. Hopefully you'll love the job!
Avatar 7:34pm TDK60:

Hey, dust that slab and drop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Rich in Washington:

Love this Marclay track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Gary:

Best of Luck to you, NGH ... sending HIRED vibes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Gary:

TDK60!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm Rich in Washington:

I'll never forget seeing him on Night Music on NBC. Such a life changing experience for me.
  7:36pm Headcleaner:

@ngh - I hereby grant you all the luck in the world!
  7:36pm rw:

First time I heard of C. Marklay was in a record catalog... maybe NMDS. It was a record called Record Without a Cover. An LP mailed without a jacket so it would pick up scratches along the way. Really bummed I didn't order one. I remember loving the idea at the time.
  7:36pm northguineahills:

I have this Christian Marclay on vinyl as well (not selling it). Thanks. Being homeless has put a spammer in the works lately. I’ll go back to being middle class and beat my psoriasis if I get this.
  7:37pm northguineahills:

Spammer/wrench, but spammer works as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Charlie:

Scratch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm chresti:

Yeah, do that scritchy on that roto-slab.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm coelacanth∅:

good luck ngh
... but in MY world any potential employer has to pay the interviewee for all interviews after the 2nd one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Gary:

Headcleaner and Charlie!
  7:42pm listener james from westwood:

Dave the Spazz’s ears just pricked up at that scratchy monkey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Gary:

Haw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm Charlie:

x-ecutioners, livehuman: scratching my itch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm coelacanth∅:

rw that record without a cover has been played a few times on wfmu (maybe on bodega pop?) - but i think getting it in the mail you kind of get gypped though, it having not picked up any damage from storage and handling in a record store!
Avatar 7:45pm tim abdellah:

Holy crap - that sample is from "Chilling Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House" - "you are an expert"
Avatar 7:45pm tim abdellah:

Oh I know these screams!
Avatar 7:45pm tim abdellah:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Gary:

Hehhehehe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm chresti:

I went to 2 interviews for the city job.
Haha coelacanthϴØ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm WR:

Sending You are HIRED! northguineahills vibes to the master mixer at the controls.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Charlie:

coelacanth∅: you gotta use that Marclay record as a doormat for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Gary:

WR!!!!
  7:49pm rw:

tim, for reasons I don't understand I have two copies of that record but I don't have two turntables!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm coelacanth∅:

haha Charlie! - or a serving tray?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Gary:

Oh, man, you need to get a second turntable just so you can extend the screams into an endless screambeat
Avatar 7:52pm tim abdellah:

@RW - wow! The possibilities!
  7:52pm rw:

Gary, I'm on it. I really need more hobbies and projects in my life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm coelacanth∅:

Mutabaruka!
  8:09pm rw:

Gary, is that a photo of you in your basement? And boy, what a difference a couple years makes 1996-1998
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Gary:

@RW: Haha, no; it's Shadow
Avatar 8:11pm tim abdellah:

I listened to that podcast with Oliver Wang over the weekend. Super interesting! goodbye.substack.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm Gary:

Ah, thank you for dropping the URL, Tim! Yeah, I was mesmerized ... book's also a great read + cool photos
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm coelacanth∅:

hahaha! Awesome
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm coelacanth∅:

(although i'd be scared if someone i was with made those noises)
Avatar 8:25pm TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Jeff Golick:

This show is making me rather nostalgic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Gary:

We're leaning into the retromania
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Jeff Golick:

Yeah. (Another great book, btw, by Simon Reynolds [as you probably know].)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Jeff Golick:

Gonna go break out my Technics Chainsaw Massacre CD now. Back in a sec.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm Uncle Michael:

neh-mon-ick
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Charlie:

not dee-mon-ick
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Jeff Golick:

Lesson 6 is on this jam, which is probably my fave: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm chresti:

Oh yeah, I love some of that stuff, trippity hoppity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Jeff Golick:

woo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Gary:

@Jeff: Fuuuuuuck! I probably could've justified including it then, if I'd known about that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Uncle Michael:

My ignorance of turntablism is boundless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm chresti:

Hey you, martial arts fan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm Charlie:

Better turntablism than ablism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm WR:

Brainfreeze may be sampling Albert Collins. Waiting for a signature rif to seal it.
  9:19pm rw:

What's the deal with martial arts? Just a random thing or something of significance? Or both?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Jeff Golick:

Key context (for me, anyway): this is mixed live, on 45s, in a largely pre-internet age.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm chresti:

Listening to this led to listening to collage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Gary:

@RW: It's a recurring hip-hop trope, but I dunno when it begins. 36 Chambers being most obvious example. And, yeah, what, Jeff said!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm coelacanth∅:

these guys learned a bit from coldcut
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm spodiodi:

listening but afk... i case i don't make it back, thanks, Gary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm WR:

My bad, it was Albert King. Discogs has the tracks listed.
Avatar 9:26pm tim abdellah:

Dang - I just got the Thang CD of Eddie Bo in the mail yesterday!
Avatar 9:28pm tim abdellah:

Make that "The Hook and Sling" CD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm chresti:

Haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Uncle Michael:

Glitchtableism!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm WR:

This set has many records that I love the original but I can enjoy the groove they have put them into.

@tim, lovely Thang you got to go with the Bo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Gary:

Hey whoa the "action" doesn't stop here, kids. No, no, no, no, no. Stick around when Sam Segal takes things up a notch or fifty with If You Lose Your Horse, starting at 10 PM EST. Tonight's show: "Plank Road Built by the Horse" wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:40pm tim abdellah:

Firesign?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Gary:

Gosh, you know, it sounded familiar, and my first thought was Bob and Ray, but ...
Avatar 9:42pm tim abdellah:

Ah - could be!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Uncle Michael:

One voice sounded like Pat McCormick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Gary:

It could well be FT
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Gary:

Ah, Pat McCormick ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm chresti:

Haven't listened to this in ages.
Avatar 9:53pm TDK60:

Thanks Gary.
