The dog is not used to our going anyplace without him now! He acted like we'd been gone a week when we got back -- as if he'd stir outside on a day like this for love or money.

spodi, in back-yard-animal-life news there was a possum that looked like it might outmass me hanging out on the back stoop last night as we were going to bed! The dog took one look and was basically like, "Uh, [Handy]? This seems like it might be something *you* should handle."

We've had some hard freezes, but a few of the garden marigolds have held on. And the kale, of course, which is impervious to anything.
Avatar 12:23pm
TDK60:

Ah, a Silly Wizard version coming? ...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Handy Haversack:

TDK60, there's no early-voting place in Greenpoint. All N. Brooklyn is going to Clymer St. in S. Wburg, which is an hour's walk from us, easy. So we took the ER ferry from Greenpoint to the S. Wburg stop, which was about four blocks from the polling place.

Our regular polling place is in a senior center, and we decided we felt kind of weird about putting them at more risk.

OH WOW--"Broom of the Cowdenknowes"! Do you have the Silly Wizard version, David?

what's everyone doing about trick-or-treaters this year? we didn't really have to give it any thought ta the last place, as no kids would come by. lots more kids aorund this year, and we're unprepared, and not sure how to handle it (with the plague times and all)

Avatar 🚂 12:28pm
YETI BOB:

Sure thing Sem. I had a pretty good summer - grew tomatoes, eggplant, chilis, salad greens, and lots of flowers. I have great southern exposure and lots of sun. We've had snow twice but not really a hard killing frost yet.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm

Avatar 🚂 12:31pm
spodiodi:

that's the best we'd come up with, David. was also thinking of being a scary monster voice who would release treats to the brave. we don't have any candy nor a jack-o-latern --- we shall see (guessing we'll just end up putting out a bowl of candy, like you mention)
Avatar 🚂 12:32pm
YETI BOB:

leaving a bowl of self-service candy at the door is a good idea though, DD. i'll do that. and probably i'll wind up eating all the candy myself so i'll get some good stuff :) dark chocolate
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm
chresti:

spodi, if you have a local Nextdoor forum, there might be listings of places that kids can go and get treats, I think they put the treats in a bowl for the trick or treaters.
Avatar 12:34pm
Sylvia (France-NYC):

if you plan of handing candies out, make sure they're paper wrapped, for obvious reasons
Avatar 🚂 12:35pm
spodiodi:

i also considered putting apples out instead of candy (we used to get pissed off at people who'd give us apples as kids) additionally, i thought of putting out some Jack Chick tracts (more of just because it's funny to me, and probably not something we'd do) :D
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
Phillippe Bastille:

We don't get many trick or treaters here. Very few sidewalks in our neighborhood, so families go to the street that runs to the elementary school, which does have sidewalks. Everyone generally contributes the bulk of their candy to people living on that street, because they could easily get 500 kids. We got 2 kids last year. Those of us who don't have little kids hang out in our street in costumes and I watch everyone drink.

Kids never will step inside our gate. One year we got maybe 3 kids, the ones that live in the back.
Avatar 🚂 12:37pm
YETI BOB:

Sylvia - even before COVID there was a huge paranoia in the USA, kids won't touch anything that's not individually wrapped (no apples!) because they could be poisoined, or have razor blades inside (this razor-blade in the apple story is an old chestnut).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm

Avatar 🚂 12:38pm
YETI BOB:

That reminds me - when I was a kid and we'd go trick-or-treating in the NJ suburbs, there was one house everyone avoided, our parents told us we shouldn't go there because they were "doing drugs" and there might be drugs in our candy. Everyone believed and repeated this story. Turns out, I discovered years later, their teenage son had been arrested for marijuana possession. The idea that this put us at risk is totally ridiculous. But these kind of stories spread and thrive (even in the days before social media)

Brian, it's an old Kawasaki Zephyr (ZR550) -- its a little small for me (both it's stance and power), but i love it! got a little bit of the head clear yesterday moving it (was nervous as i need to replace the fork seals, and i have it registered non-op atm -- so wiping out on the highway and the popo were on my mind the entire ride, plus i stalled out at 70-some mph while switching to reserve) ... nut it's a great little bike, and i love it (almost sold it to avoid having to deal with it... been too long since i'd ridden prior. glad i didn't sell it. i was reminded of *how much i love riding* yesterday.. smiles for hours)

the xj is what i wish for. i've had 550s and a 750 (modified) and yes the 550 is small but it was far faster than i'll ever need to go and i can back it up an incline, maneuver through situations...i also like the chain. the 550 is the only xj that isn't shaft-driven.

the frame of the xj550 and the 750 is identical, but i guess the extra weight of the 750 makes it sit lower, and i get fatigued much faster. i can ride the 550 for hours.
kind of opposite of the generally accepted reasoning that a bigger bike rides smoother so it's better for longer periods.

shaft drives are really mixed blessing. low-maintenance is nice, but the unwanted torque is undesirable (as can be repairs), for sure, coel -- i probably prefer chains too (with all of the mess, adjustment, stretching, and replacement and all -- just simpler, which is huge)

well -it's possible what i read was incorrect.
