Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Handy Haversack:

Hey, Lisa!

We were out in that rain walking to and from the ferry and polling place and waiting outside for a bit. A soaker! Glad to be back home.

Afternoon David!

Heya Spodi!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Phillippe Bastille:

My bride was talking about voting last night and I told her I was still undecided. Did not go well, even after I told her I was referring to pizza toppings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm David Dichelle:

Tis indeed, ßrian - our local infrequently used track.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm spodiodi:

lol, Phillippe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm David Dichelle:

And I mean very local.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Handy Haversack:

Lisa, we did -- it was pretty fast, really. Half an hour from arrival to walking back to the ferry.

Your commitment to the bit is admirable, Phillippe!

David, glad to see you. I head from Mariano, and he got through the storm OK but has no power -- or had none as of this morning.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:09pm David (in London):

Yo Spod. Settling in after the move now?
Avatar 12:10pm Really Lisa:

David D, is there a chance your mic is on?

Hi David and continental s!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm David Dichelle:

It was briefly, thanks for mentioning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:10pm David Dichelle:

Hello!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm spodiodi:

hi David, slowly getting closer to settling in! every day another small piece finds it's place. thanks for asking

hi chresticia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm David Dichelle:

Hello TDK!
Avatar 🚂 12:11pm βrian:

I had too much good coffee this morning. Now my spark plug wires are arcing, causing misfires.
Avatar 🚂 12:11pm Sem:

Hello, David, and all aboard.
Happy to report the Long Island daisies here in bloom still, but the last of the dahlias bowed out to the very recent frost.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm David (in London):

Handy, good news. We had a storm here yesterday, but I felt a bit sheepish at use the word in Mariano's presence.

TDK! Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm David Dichelle:

Hey Sem!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Phillippe Bastille:

thought I heard a little extracurricular whistling there...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm David Dichelle:

I should always have it on!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm spodiodi:

aloha S'em!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:16pm Handy Haversack:

The dog is not used to our going anyplace without him now! He acted like we'd been gone a week when we got back -- as if he'd stir outside on a day like this for love or money.

spodi, in back-yard-animal-life news there was a possum that looked like it might outmass me hanging out on the back stoop last night as we were going to bed! The dog took one look and was basically like, "Uh, [Handy]? This seems like it might be something *you* should handle."
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:17pm YETI BOB:

Sem - my marigolds and zinnias are turning out to be remarkably hardy. Everything else is pretty much over.
Avatar 🚂 12:19pm TDK60:

Handy, still perplexed why you must ferry to an election. Still in Brooklyn or across to Manhattan?
Avatar 🚂 12:19pm Sem:

Greets, David in the fox mask.

Yeti Bob: where are you growing things?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:19pm David (in London):

Wasn't 'Yeti Bob's Hardy Marigold' an obscure Psyche band from 1968?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:21pm spodiodi:

haha, Handy. such a brave pup :D possums are scary, man, those teeth! that expression! the playing! (we had some that lived next to my place in Glen Park) i bet your stoop friend was looking for halloween loot (with all of those jack-o-laterns! ;)
Avatar 🚂 12:21pm TDK60:

hehe, hiya David in Londonham.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:22pm YETI BOB:

Sem: Chicago, on my deck (in containers) and in my front yard (in the ground).
@D(iL): Yes, that was me. I was 3 years old. The album goes for upwards of $1000 on Discogs. Only 7 copies pressed. (I may have one or two copies stashed away).
Avatar 🚂 12:22pm βrian:

We've had some hard freezes, but a few of the garden marigolds have held on. And the kale, of course, which is impervious to anything.
Avatar 🚂 12:23pm TDK60:

Ah, a Silly Wizard version coming? ...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Handy Haversack:

TDK60, there's no early-voting place in Greenpoint. All N. Brooklyn is going to Clymer St. in S. Wburg, which is an hour's walk from us, easy. So we took the ER ferry from Greenpoint to the S. Wburg stop, which was about four blocks from the polling place.

Our regular polling place is in a senior center, and we decided we felt kind of weird about putting them at more risk.

OH WOW--"Broom of the Cowdenknowes"! Do you have the Silly Wizard version, David?
Avatar 🚂 12:25pm TDK60:

Handy, oh, Bkln-to-Bkln; keepin' it in the republic.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Handy Haversack:

Nice call, TDK60 -- great minds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm David Dichelle:

I wasn't planning to - but if you both would like to hear it...
Avatar 🚂 12:26pm Sem:

Thx, Yeti Bob, for the gardening report from the Windy City.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm spodiodi:

what's everyone doing about trick-or-treaters this year? we didn't really have to give it any thought ta the last place, as no kids would come by. lots more kids aorund this year, and we're unprepared, and not sure how to handle it (with the plague times and all)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm WR:

Hi all. Handy, wow, I forgot about Zeta, need to check in with family in NOLA.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm YETI BOB:

Sure thing Sem. I had a pretty good summer - grew tomatoes, eggplant, chilis, salad greens, and lots of flowers. I have great southern exposure and lots of sun. We've had snow twice but not really a hard killing frost yet.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Handy Haversack:

@spod: If we were to give anything out, it would be little USB drives with the Peanuts Halloween Special saved on them since Disney has locked all of those specials away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm David Dichelle:

Hey there WR!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:29pm spodiodi:

good idea -- stick it to the mouse, Handy \m/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:29pm David Dichelle:

Spodiodi: Why not just leave things outside for the taking?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Stanley:

Here I am.
Yaroo!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:30pm YETI BOB:

I'm not really expecting trick-or-treaters. Don't get many on a normal year...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm David Dichelle:

Salut Stanley!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:31pm David (in London):

Stanley! No chewing at the back.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:31pm spodiodi:

that's the best we'd come up with, David. was also thinking of being a scary monster voice who would release treats to the brave. we don't have any candy nor a jack-o-latern --- we shall see (guessing we'll just end up putting out a bowl of candy, like you mention)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:32pm YETI BOB:

leaving a bowl of self-service candy at the door is a good idea though, DD. i'll do that. and probably i'll wind up eating all the candy myself so i'll get some good stuff :) dark chocolate
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:33pm chresti:

spodi, if you have a local Nextdoor forum, there might be listings of places that kids can go and get treats, I think they put the treats in a bowl for the trick or treaters.
Avatar 12:34pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

if you plan of handing candies out, make sure they're paper wrapped, for obvious reasons
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm spodiodi:

i also considered putting apples out instead of candy (we used to get pissed off at people who'd give us apples as kids) additionally, i thought of putting out some Jack Chick tracts (more of just because it's funny to me, and probably not something we'd do) :D
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Phillippe Bastille:

We don't get many trick or treaters here. Very few sidewalks in our neighborhood, so families go to the street that runs to the elementary school, which does have sidewalks. Everyone generally contributes the bulk of their candy to people living on that street, because they could easily get 500 kids. We got 2 kids last year. Those of us who don't have little kids hang out in our street in costumes and I watch everyone drink.
Avatar 12:35pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

on, not of
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Cmurtha:

This slaps.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Stanley:

Good afternoon David. Getting dark here, already.
So happy we have a Scottish song in the Roud today.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Handy Haversack:

Silly Wizard! So good -- thanks, David!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm chresti:

Kids never will step inside our gate. One year we got maybe 3 kids, the ones that live in the back.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm YETI BOB:

Sylvia - even before COVID there was a huge paranoia in the USA, kids won't touch anything that's not individually wrapped (no apples!) because they could be poisoined, or have razor blades inside (this razor-blade in the apple story is an old chestnut).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm David Dichelle:

My pleasure, Handy!
Avatar 🚂 12:37pm TDK60:

David, danke.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Michael 98145:

Happy whatever-day-it-is, all
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm spodiodi:

chresti, i'm afraid of what my local "Nextdoor" community has to say about me ;)

Sylvia, yes. wrapped for ure. there was a lot of urban legend surrounding "razor blades found in" ... apples, candy, whatever... when i was young
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Handy Haversack:

This whole album is excellent, in case anyone's looking for a Scottish trad. band to sample.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm David Dichelle:

Gern geschehen, TDK!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm David Dichelle:

Happy day, Michael!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Michael 98145:

i remember when the fire stations were x-raying the halloween treats
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:38pm YETI BOB:

That reminds me - when I was a kid and we'd go trick-or-treating in the NJ suburbs, there was one house everyone avoided, our parents told us we shouldn't go there because they were "doing drugs" and there might be drugs in our candy. Everyone believed and repeated this story. Turns out, I discovered years later, their teenage son had been arrested for marijuana possession. The idea that this put us at risk is totally ridiculous. But these kind of stories spread and thrive (even in the days before social media)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:39pm David (in London):

The Broom of the Cowdenknowes is useless without The Dustpan of Berwick.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm chresti:

spodi, the one here is silly, like getting alarmed when they see a coyote, or someone collecting cans, etc.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Stanley:

Lovely rendition, this.
Avatar 🚂 12:40pm βrian:

We're going to turn out the lights, though we may leave a small basket of airline liquor bottles on the stoop.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:41pm chris:

lol, DiL :)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:41pm spodiodi:

YETI BOB, crazy how those kinds of ideas propagated back in the day. the "scary houses" we found would often have some of the best loot. also always liked unprepared people who just gave out money
Avatar 🚂 12:42pm TDK60:

..speakin' of dustpans & brooms...this place needs a sweep.
Avatar 🚂 12:42pm Bas NL:

Hi David and subwayteers!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm chris:

ah next-door... social media for the constant left-turn signal, get-off-my-lawn set. what a hoot it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm David Dichelle:

Good almost evening, Bas!
Avatar 🚂 12:43pm Bas NL:

Last colleague just left... so full speed training!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:46pm spodiodi:

i think there was some static recently about how Nextdoor was taking heat for supporting that kind of alarm-ism, chris ("Nextdoor is racist", etc.)
Avatar 🚂 12:46pm βrian:

My mom was a schoolteacher who got her ya-yas out by taking seriously her role in scaring the kids who came to our door. She could scream like a banshee.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:47pm spodiodi:

ahah, to your mom, βrian!
Avatar 🚂 12:50pm βrian:

She was a diligent and well-loved teacher.

But on Halloween, she was *off-duty*!
Avatar 🚂 12:51pm Bas NL:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm David Dichelle:

Hello Doctorjazz - and thanks for your pledge as well!
Avatar 1:01pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@Yeti Bob @spodiodi oh, I didn't know. It reminds me of an episode of Firefly though, where two characters used to cut apples with a knife and they had a whole war story around that, but kinda similar to that urban legend
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Handy Haversack:

@Sylvia: "It's a grenade."
Avatar 1:03pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

yep
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:06pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm David Dichelle:

And thanks, Brian - we have made the goal!!!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Brian in UK:

spodiodi, are you unpacked yet?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:24pm Brian in UK:

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:25pm spodiodi:

dingdingding!

Brian no, but i retrieved my motorcycle yesterday, and we had some art moved and hung (those two things took almost the entire day yesterday.) little by little, things are falling into place. (sooooo much going on with that and work and ... everything. my head has been spinning) i'm ready to slip back into my casual existence, but not quite there yet

thanks for asking! and good to see ya :)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm spodiodi:

our new mattress and box spring will arrive saturday
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:27pm Brian in UK:

spodiodi, what motorcycle do you have? Mine is an old Honda CB500. Might be an idea to go for a ride and clear the head.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:28pm YETI BOB:

@Brian: I used to have two CB750's, one from 1971, one from 1973 ... used parts from both to put together one working bike. (I don't ride motorcycles any more - too dangerous! - but so much fun)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:29pm YETI BOB:

CB500 is a great bike. The 750 is almost too powerful.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Brian in UK:

YETI BOB, those early CB750s changed motorcycling. Multi cylinders, reliable with good brakes and fast. They were the template for the future. Two wheels are tops.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm spodiodi:

Brian, it's an old Kawasaki Zephyr (ZR550) -- its a little small for me (both it's stance and power), but i love it! got a little bit of the head clear yesterday moving it (was nervous as i need to replace the fork seals, and i have it registered non-op atm -- so wiping out on the highway and the popo were on my mind the entire ride, plus i stalled out at 70-some mph while switching to reserve) ... nut it's a great little bike, and i love it (almost sold it to avoid having to deal with it... been too long since i'd ridden prior. glad i didn't sell it. i was reminded of *how much i love riding* yesterday.. smiles for hours)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Webhamster Henry:

cool, chris! my mail is in limbo, and keep getting new distrubing evidence that the usps has become muffed up pretty bad... so many ads delivered as a result of chang-of-address (in their confirmations, and new mail spam arriving here before things i expect to eb forwarded -- usps is telling every mail spammer where i am. privacy was dead in 1995, it's now rotted into a putrid state.)

We paddled from Killin to Aberfeldy a few years ago -- a real highlight of our travels. Killin is a really nice little town with lots of great walking nearby. We've stayed there a couple of times now. The MacNabb cemetery on an island in the river is well worth a look about as well, and the historical society has a very cool little museum. And of course you can just sit and watch the fall of Dochart for hours on end.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Stanley:

Aye, Handy. So happy you had a good time in Scotland. Viccy and I thought about moving to Aberfeldy.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:19pm chris:

speaking of getting a perspective of old sites by water, i can highly recommend renting a boat and taking it out on Lago di Garda in NE Italy. the ancient Roman terraced gardens along the west coast of the lake truly come into view, unlike driving through them on roadways. i effing miss travel so much.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Stanley:

That sounds sublime, chris. Only time I did something like that was a sunrise on the Ganges in Varanasi
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:22pm spodiodi:

me too, coel! it's a 1990 Zephyr 550 (ZR550) -- i too dig Japanese bikes (especially scooters!) but i love all bikes, more or less.
Yamaha: i've owned an '81 XJ650 (i still ogle the schematic of that engine from the repair manual from time to time -- the reason i kept the manual) and a '85-ish Riva scooter (that was stolen in front of my old place in Glen Park, around this time of year (many years ago) -- also wiped out on that one (my right arm and shoulder have never been right since.)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:22pm spodiodi:

that does sound nice, chris
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:24pm spodiodi:

the XJ was too soft and too small for my liking, but that engine was the first inline-4 j-bike i'd owned -- coming from 2 Harleys before that bike, i was thrilled that i could tach it up 3x as high as the sportsters

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm coelacanth∅:

ha, spodi i'm just catching up -was in the other room.
the xj is what i wish for. i've had 550s and a 750 (modified) and yes the 550 is small but it was far faster than i'll ever need to go and i can back it up an incline, maneuver through situations...i also like the chain. the 550 is the only xj that isn't shaft-driven.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm coelacanth∅:

of course if i was planning on distance traveling i'd want a bigger bike.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Phillippe Bastille:

Handy, do you have any of that Earle Grey tea left? All I have is Sleepy Time, which ain't gonna cut it today...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:39pm Handy Haversack:

Plenty left, Phillippe!

If you check your e-mail, you'll see one from me asking for your mailing address -- I can throw some tea in the envelope!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Ike:

I like Earl Grey green, but I haven't had it in quite a while. Unfortunately my tastes are getting too fancy for the cheap stuff. Maybe I need to just get some bergamot and dip it into some already-procured loose-leaf green tea myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm coelacanth∅:

the frame of the xj550 and the 750 is identical, but i guess the extra weight of the 750 makes it sit lower, and i get fatigued much faster. i can ride the 550 for hours.
kind of opposite of the generally accepted reasoning that a bigger bike rides smoother so it's better for longer periods.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:41pm spodiodi:

shaft drives are really mixed blessing. low-maintenance is nice, but the unwanted torque is undesirable (as can be repairs), for sure, coel -- i probably prefer chains too (with all of the mess, adjustment, stretching, and replacement and all -- just simpler, which is huge)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:43pm spodiodi:

the 750's engine is *part of* the frame iirc, coel -- so i'm surprised to read that (more than likely, my memory has failed me again)

spod, you know what's funny? Bagpipe LOVES motorcycles. He stares at them when they go by, sniffs them when they're parked, and seems to be silently judging me whenever I make him get in the Corolla. I guess a motorcycle, sidecar, and dog-sized long white scarf and aviator glasses should be in our future.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:48pm spodiodi:

i'm curious to hear that now, David! but really enjoying everything you've been playing today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm coelacanth∅:

well -it's possible what i read was incorrect. (it might've been wikipedia) i don't understand the innards of motors so well. i was told, though (which bolsters what you say) when my 550 suddenly couldn't do anything but 2nd gear, that i broke a fork, which is in the transmission, which "is in the engine". if i'd had a garage then i would've made that a winter project.
- but, alas...
