Sem on the Bay.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:06pm YETI BOB:

D(iL) - I enjoyed our conversation about Julian Cope yesterday. After that I was inspired to check out what he's been up to lately, and I wound up purchasing & downloading "Drunken Songs".
Avatar 12:06pm Really Lisa:

Hi Yeti B, David iL,Sylvia, spodi, Handy, everyone. Hope all are holding it together.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:07pm YETI BOB:

@D(iL): Have you heard that one? Mrs Yeti and I listened to it and it really made us want to drink - so we did. It's a very effective album & a ton of fun to listen (and drink) to.
Avatar 🚂 12:08pm Sem:

David (iL). Semaphore flags signaling *Hulllllloooo*!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm David (in London):

Yeti Bob - That's one of the great things about Cope (and I would probably say the same about Nick Cave, too): you can duck out for long stretches, but when you're ready, you can dive back in, hear lots of great new stuff, and remember all over again why you loved them in the first place. I've played loads of his stuff this summer after that gig.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:11pm David (in London):

No, don't have that one, but that might soon need to be rectified...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:12pm YETI BOB:

It's a good 'un!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm David Dichelle:

Lisa: Just about - hope you are as well.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Handy Haversack:

David, Lisa, hi! Gonna make some lunch, but I'm listening.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm YETI BOB:

Includes the song "As the Beer Flows Over Me" which he says he wrote for his own funeral, and the epic "On The Road to Tralee" (it's a very long road, because they keep stopping for another drink along the way). Mrs Yeti is not quite as big a Cope fan as I am, and she said "This is really good!"
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Brian in UK:

Hello David & strap hangers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm David Dichelle:

Hello Brian!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:17pm YETI BOB:

@D(iL): The Cope record made us want to hoist several pints, and it also really made us want to go visit Ireland and England - as soon as conditions permit.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:18pm chresti:

Hi David and Continentals!
Avatar 🚂 12:19pm βrian:

Can one be hoist with his own tankard?
Avatar 🚂 12:19pm Sem:

Hiya, chresti. Left coast still attached to the mainland, I guess?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:19pm David (in London):

Sold Y.B. And how can you not love a man whose recent compilation was called 'Trip Advizor'! And boy, it would be great to see you and the Countess in Olde Albion when the world once more permits...

Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm YETI BOB:

My guess: Niue
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:43pm YETI BOB:

I never heard of that country before but that's what my program printed out! 1 in 249 chances of being correct :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44pm David Dichelle:

YB: You may be right or maybe niuet.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:46pm Handy Haversack:

This is what happens after the War with the Newts, YB, at least according to Čapek.
  12:46pm Irene:

I often forget how great Kate is!
Avatar 12:46pm Honeybear:

all countries are imaginary anyway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm David Dichelle:

YB: I think we're down to around 228 more or less viable countries and territories left.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm David Dichelle:

Hello Irene!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:47pm YETI BOB:

(Reading up on Niue) - A coral island in the South Pacific, people go there for the dark sky. @HH: Nice háček there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm David Dichelle:

Honeybear: Arbitrary at best.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Carmichael:

Oh hey, what's the artsy wood carving, David?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm David Dichelle:

Dividing the world neatly into countries is in fact a qualm I have about the series, but it is a good way of covering a lot of territory/ies as it were.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm David Dichelle:

Carmichael: It is called "Balance?!" by Christian Schmidt, 2018.
Avatar 12:50pm Honeybear:

Is that around Leipzig somewhere?
  12:51pm Irene:

Loving the show as I drive, so not much commenting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm David Dichelle:

It is between Leipzig and Zeitz along the Elster-Radwanderweg bike path.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Irene - stay safe out there!
Avatar 12:54pm Honeybear:

@david - cool, I'll keep a look out for it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm David Dichelle:

Honeybear: Do you pass that way often?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm David Dichelle:

(Do I know you by another name?)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Carmichael:

Celtic hoomei!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Handy Haversack:

This is great.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:56pm YETI BOB:

@HH: I need to re-read "War With The Newts", Čapek was such a visionary/genius. I'd love to get my hands on this edition: upload.wikimedia.org...
On a related note, I'm sure you've read "We" by Yevgeny Zamayatin, right?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:57pm YETI BOB:

(that's from 1955 and just so pulp-fiction-trash looking!)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Michael 98145:

into the up and out
Avatar 🚂 12:59pm Will in Raleigh:

is this breton?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm David Dichelle:

Hey there Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm David Dichelle:

Hey Will, yes it is.
Avatar 🚂 1:00pm Will in Raleigh:

i thought so. always sounds like welsh spoken with a french accent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm David Dichelle:

Yes, Breton and Welsh are very closely related.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:00pm YETI BOB:

This is reminding me of "Tuva-Irish live music project" by Sainkho Namtchylak and Roy Carroll ... haven't thought about that in a while. Is throat-singing traditional in Breton music or is this a cross-cultural influence?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Brian in UK:

I think it was Alan Stivell many years ago from the French North-West I remember hearing.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Handy Haversack:

Ooo, yeah, YB. I think this is the edition I have: external-content.duckduckgo.com...

I don't think I ever have read /We/!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:02pm David (in London):

Brian, I was just about to mention Alan Stivell. Always been a big fan of his.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:04pm YETI BOB:

@HH: That's the classic "psychological" cover, using some Max Ernst or other surrealistic artwork to suggest "modern" and "brainy".
Avatar 🚂 1:04pm Will in Raleigh:

@yeti i'd say it's a cross-cultural influence in the case of this track, has a pretty fusiony feel in general. Though Irish & scottish mouth music/Puirt à beul does have some similarities with throat singing & i wouldn't be surprised if there's a similar tradition in brittany
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Handy Haversack:

This Amsterdam sounds like a party town, as Clay would say.
Avatar 1:05pm Honeybear:

Would love to hear this band whilst wandering the canals...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:06pm YETI BOB:

Since the topic of book covers came up I can't resist posting this, totally brilliant artwork by Todd Alcott lithub.com...
Avatar 1:06pm Honeybear:

Would love to be able to get to wander any part of Amsterdam again, period. Some day ...
Avatar 🚂 1:07pm Sem:

Angels chanting, my, my, my.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:08pm YETI BOB:

@Will: Thanks!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Brian in UK:

Are Klezmer bands the musical equivalent of Irish pubs?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Michael 98145:

@YETI BOB, that is wonderful!

( We probably have some of those books :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm David Dichelle:

Yes, I think that is a cross-cultural influence there, quite a few Breton groups like to mix traditional Breton sounds and other traditions.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:11pm YETI BOB:

@Michael: I appreciate the attention to the small details, like "Zimmerman Books", etc.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Handy Haversack:

Holy crap, Yeti Bob. Amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm David Dichelle:

Brian, traditionally they are wedding bands but I love the idea of klezmer pubs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm StringOFperils:

I forgot about Mari Boine. I saw her around the time of this recording. Music of the Sami people.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm YETI BOB:

If you like those, there are more Todd Alcott book covers (way too many, actually) here: www.instagram.com... -
I really love the Moonage Daydream and Bizarre Love Triangle covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm David Dichelle:

String, saw her later that decade, it was an excellent show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm StringOFperils:

Yes, David, agreed. I quite enjoyed it. And it introduced me to that indigenous group too.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm David (in London):

Y.B. - Those covers are absolutely great. Lovely pieces of retro design humour.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:19pm YETI BOB:

Thanks for the Mari Boine , hadn't heard her before, that was amazing!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Handy Haversack:

YB, I sent that LitHub URL to our Editorial, Design, and Production Dept. The designers are desperately trying to get all the covers done for the seasonal catalogue. They really appreciated it. So you've done a mitzvah for some beleaguered culture-industry workers.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:24pm YETI BOB:

@HH: I'm so glad that you liked it and shared it with other people who appreciate this sort of thing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm David Dichelle:

My pleasure, Yeti Bob!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm David Dichelle:

Hey Fred, great to see you!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:56pm fred:

@Yeti Bob: Does he specialize in book titles lifted from tracks I listened to many many years ago?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 1:59pm YETI BOB:

@fred: I think these are tracks we all listened to many years ago!

Well - it's weekly meeting time for me - I have to drop off - it's been fun - see y'all next time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm David Dichelle:

Thanks, Yeti Bob, have a good meeting and evening...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:01pm fred:

Damn, I missed the Roud. Those responsible for that should meet the fate of most Roud protagonists. Even more so if it was one or the rare ones that ends well
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:06pm fred:

The gram link looked fun, but it quickly asked me for a facebook login. Oh well, as I might tell to Mark Hurst, the reason I'm not willing to delete my facebook account is that I'd have to create one first
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Stanley:

Andorra. I've never been there but sounds like a strange place.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Michael 98145:

I believe we actually -have- driven thru Andorra -- it was raining
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Stanley:

Food's probably good, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm David Dichelle:

I have been there, beautiful mountains, tobacco growing everywhere, very commercial main town of Andorra la Vella with all its duty-frees and the like.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:11pm Michael 98145:

468 square kilometres (181 sq mi)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Handy Haversack:

Good call, fred. As for the ending of the song ... I think a case can be made that it all came off OK in this one!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:14pm fred:

All I know about Andorra is that it's where southern French people go to buy cheap cigarettes (northern ones go to Luxemburg or Belgium)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm David Dichelle:

People here go to Poland or Czechia, I suppose everyone has to get around that cig tax.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:18pm fred:

Also I think the French president is a prince of Andorra. Soon to be know as a Kushner of Andorra
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Michael 98145:

Well, okay!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm David Dichelle:

Indeed, co-prince along with the Bishop of Urgell. I wonder if they meet often for tea.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Yvang:

Hi David and everyone. I am glad the Random Road segment outlives the Hellraiser Fundraiser! Andorra could be the french Delaware, except for the chemicals and Joe Biden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm David Dichelle:

Hey Yvang - yes, it has been extended for another 228 segments! Andorra was a bit of a challenge, of course.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:25pm fred:

@Yvang: It's not officially a French territory, though it looks that way it doesn't want to be. The French Boris maybe?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:27pm Yvang:

@Fred : Andorrexit !
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Yvang:

I can't wait for the random Liechtenstein set some day!

Yvang: Could be next week - I won't know for another 35 minutes myself.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Handy Haversack:

David and train friends, I'm afraid we have to go on a supply run -- we're out of both Royal Lochnagar *and* cheese! Thanks for another fantastic afternoon, David. Much appreciated.

  2:33pm Funky16Corners:

I like this piece. You always add something new to my modern classical list!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:35pm David Dichelle:

Glad you like it, Larry, as far as I know it is the only symphony ever commissioned by the government of Andorra.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm David Dichelle:

Hey there Bas!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:48pm fred:

@Bas NL: Looking up I saw a package box saying that "Bas" is French for "Low". Isn't that appropriate for someone from the Netherlands?
Avatar 🚂 2:51pm Bas NL:

Yes, Bas from Les Pays-Bas! I got my own country.. then again, to many people claim that nowadays.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Stanley:

The Lowlands of Holland is a lovely Scottish song
