Listener comments!

  6:00am Listener Bop Monroe:

greetings from chilly Tannersville.
Swag For Life Member 6:00am 12539:

Heigh ho, heigh ho!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01am Jeffrey Davison:

It's the Joe-Jeff Transitional Moment.
Avatar 6:02am Ruth Booth:

Happy Good Morning!
Avatar 6:04am duke:

Hello all and sundry
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning Bop Monroe, 12539!
Good morning Ruth, holding down the fort!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04am Jeffrey Davison:

Time to take my union suit out of mothballs for the season, plus my mink sleeping hat.
Avatar 6:05am Really Lisa:

Hello Jeffrey and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning Lisa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07am Jeffrey Davison:

This musician posted this album with track numbers only (when I was recording the session). He then went back and put in the proper titles, the sly dog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning duke!
  6:13am Earth Walker:

Hello all !
Time to Shine
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning Earth Walker!
  6:27am Cooh John:

Soothing Saturday salutations to my fellow planeteers and our sublime host, Jeffrey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning Cooh John! I only found out this week that Powers/Rolin duo are from Ohio...
Avatar 6:31am Heidee:

Hello Jeffrey and all.
A Highland lament. How did you know, Jeffrey... My old professor of English died just recently. R.I.P. Peter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33am Jeffrey Davison:

Heidee, good morning. Sorry to hear about your old professor. I always had a soft spot for English professors. I had a few wonderful, eccentric, and inspirational ones.
Avatar 6:35am Heidee:

Thanks Jeffrey. This music goes right under my skin.
  6:35am Cooh John:

I will check into that, dj JD. Needing your show after learning just before bed of the passing of RBG and imagining of the fracas to follow.
  6:36am ben abs:

Morning all from the roads of Yorkshire
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38am Jeffrey Davison:

Cooh John, true that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning ben abs!
Avatar 6:39am Heidee:

Lovely piece of piping
  6:41am Cooh John:

As a former English major I am with you, Heidee and Jeffrey. Recently discovered the passing of one of my language profs who studied under Noam Chomsky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41am Jeffrey Davison:

Heidee, Jarlath Henderson is the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Folk Award, in 2003.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43am Jeffrey Davison:

Sorry to hear that, Cooh John.
  6:44am Aye-Aye:

Good morning from the book shop! If anyone has recommendations of books to read along with Shrunken Planet, we're always looking for ideas for stock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44am fred:

English professors had a huge influence on me. One arranged to have me on an exchange program to Foxboro even though I no longer was in her class, another steered me away from a career in finance. And then there's Bill Exley from NSB
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45am Jeffrey Davison:

Aye-Aye, good morning! Just good books in general, or ones suited for this morning vibe?
Avatar 6:46am Sylvia (France-NYC):

Hello Jeffrey, and fellow Planeteers
Thank you for you show, comfort is needed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning fred! Sounds like you had some mighty good luck with your professors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning, Sylvia!
Avatar 6:48am TDK60:

Good morning Jeffrey and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning TDK60!
Avatar 6:51am Heidee:

@Cooh John, wow Chomsky, your prof must have been a wonderful linguist.
@Jeffrey, I'll look out for Henderson. Thank you for all today's beautiful folk pieces, so well and tastefully selected.
@fred, wonderful, and you have embraced it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51am Jeffrey Davison:

I absolutely love this singer, Joshua Burnside.
  6:52am Aye-Aye:

Books suited to the Shrunken Planet vibe would be good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54am fred:

@Jeffrey: I did! When I was in college, one told we I was wasting my time in class and told me not to attend, then for the final exam we had to do a presentation on something related to economics or finance, but I was free to choose any topic. I chose "small town USA in David Lynch movies", and she loved it. Turned out to be more of conversation than a presentation
  6:55am Andrew in Toronto:

Good morning Jeffrey and all other Planeteers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00am Jeffrey Davison:

fred, good story!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00am Jeffrey Davison:

Andrew, good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00am Jeffrey Davison:

Listeners, Aye-Aye is looking for some suggestions for morning vibe books...what ya got?
  7:02am Cooh John:

Jen Powers is in town. Thanks for the local gem I will have to seek out.
  7:04am vanya moscow:

Always loving your show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04am Jeffrey Davison:

Aye-Aye, it seems that the morning is a good time to leaf through photography monographs: Paul Caponigro, Minor White, Edward Weston, Brett Weston, Rolfe Horne, Oliver Gagliani...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05am fred:

Sem would be the expert, but some of his recommendations to me could fit: Alistair McLeod or Robertson Davies for instance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning vanya moscow, and thank you!
Avatar 7:06am Really Lisa:

I’m curious about Huzzar. Wonder if there’s a version named differently on the Roud Index.
Or it’s simply thematic, as I think you suggested.
Avatar 7:07am deborah:

Good Morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07am Jeffrey Davison:

Aye-Aye: art books also: Joan Mitchell (or any of the Ab Ex painters), Hilma af Klint, Agnes Martin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning, deborah!
  7:08am Cooh John:

Yes, Heidee. I took several classes. It was wonderful learning about phonemes, morphemes and expletive infixes. A whirlwind of a teacher. Only saw her quit moving and sit down once during an exam.
Avatar 7:09am deborah:

Feel this sadness and concern for our country and what remains of the democratic constitutional process. Music just fits. Thanks, Jeffrey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09am fred:

@Really Lisa: you should check out David Dichelle's show (wfmu.org...), he's going slowly but surely through the Roud index
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11am Jeffrey Davison:

Lisa: I would have to do some checking.
deborah: you're welcome, and true that.
fred: thanks for the pro tip!
Avatar 7:11am TDK60:

David Dichelle's is a good show. One of a few WFMU ones that emanate from Germany.
Avatar 7:13am Really Lisa:

@fred, exactly the show I had in mind when Jeffrey played the Jarlath Henderson song.
I’ve been catching up on his - David D’s - Roud sets here and there during my work week.
Swag For Life Member 7:13am Ted in Montclair:

Good morning all. Just tuned in and am loving today’s show. Thank God It’s Saturday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning, Ted, and thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16am fred:

Another story to honor English teachers: the reason my high school teacher added me to the exchange program was that I took the habit of finding a way, whatever the subject, to build the assignment to a reference to a French comic by the late Marcel Gotlib. By the end of the year she was already laughing when I turned it in. Instead of cracking the whip, she encouraged me in this small time creative endeavor, and that changed my life
  7:17am Toothgrinder Tom:

Enjoying my coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18am Jeffrey Davison:

Really Lisa, fred: Jarlath's song, as far as I can tell, isn't related to The Gallant Hussar (which is in Roud) or the German song The Faithful Hussar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19am Jeffrey Davison:

fred, thank you. Another great story.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning Toothgrinder Tom!
Avatar 7:20am Really Lisa:

Thanks for having a look into it, Jeffrey :)
  7:21am SaximusMax:

Listening to these beautiful songs in Minneapolis
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning SaximusMax, and thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23am Jeffrey Davison:

fred: I had a Mr. Murphy as an English teacher in 11th Grade. I think the first "eccentric" teacher I had, but one who was in love with words and language. He definitely awakened something in me!
  7:24am Cooh John:

My linguistic teacher's first car out of school was a black VW bug. She said she had to name it Gregor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24am Jeffrey Davison:

Cooh John: ha! Good one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24am Be Now Homeboy:

Good Morning
that dandelion stiff song was outstanding
Avatar 7:26am Heidee:

@Cooh John, brilliant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning Be Now Homeboy, and thanks! He's a young musician I found this week. He has a couple of EPs on Bandcamp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27am Be Now Homeboy:

thanks I was looking for the track I failed to check BC :) ty he is quite good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28am Jeffrey Davison:

Aye-Aye: morning seems a good time for poetry also, but too distracting with songs on. Lorine Niedecker, Jack Gilbert, the ancient Chinese or Persian poets, Whitman...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28am Be Now Homeboy:

Sweet .. and wahla .. Dandelion Stiff dandelionstiff.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 7:31am Heidee:

@fred, support is one of the if not the most important skills of teaching, no matter where. People need to thrive and blossom, no matter what age. A great blessing goes out to all the teachers!
  7:31am Philippe bastille:

Good morning
Avatar 7:32am Really Lisa:

Ok, Henderson references The Wounded Hussar, which is included among lists of Traditional Irish music, if not specifically the Roud Folk Index.
Off to swim at the gym. Glad to have the archives for later.
Thank you for your show, Jeffrey.
Be safe and well, all.
  7:33am Cooh John:

Thanks for the online fraternizaton. Off to work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34am Jeffrey Davison:

Heidee, for sure. If ever the teachers needed help, it's now.
Lisa: thank you! Be well.
Cooh John, take care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning, Philippe bastille!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38am fred:

The way teachers are seen in my country as basically disposable daycare attendants is disgusting. Short-sighted too
Swag For Life Member 7:41am Ted in Montclair:

Books: I must recommend one of my favorite photography books, Galen Rowell: A Retrospective. His photos of mountains and other wilderness settings are stunning and sublime; he died in a small plane crash in 2002. His images would complement any of these contemplative songs — and especially Across the Great Divide by the great Kate Wolf. Rest In Peace Justice Ginsburg.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42am Jeffrey Davison:

fred, I hear you. Too often, teachers are not given what they need, and under-valued, for sure.
Avatar 7:43am Fredericks:

Monographs mean a single subject, Jeffrey?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45am Jeffrey Davison:

Ted in Montclair: Galen was a good one. Thanks for the reminder. Eliot Porter was a big deal back in the 60s and 70s, and kind of overlooked today, but a great one, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45am Jeffrey Davison:

Fredericks: no...single photographer.
Avatar 7:46am Fredericks:

Ah. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46am Jeffrey Davison:

...or artist of any kind.
  7:47am Aye-Aye:

Thanks for the recommendations, I've been looking up the ones I'm less familar with. Looks like I could build a great photography section. Poetry too - really interesting that Lorine Niedecker was the first poet published by Ian Hamilton Finlay's Wild Hawthorn Press.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47am Jeffrey Davison:

Finlay had great taste!
Avatar 7:47am Strandlund:

Good Morning from Iowa. Thanks for the beautiful start to my weekend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning Strandlund, and thank you!
Avatar 7:49am Heidee:

@fred + Jeffrey (and @deborah (Hi!), knowing she teaches as well) - being one myself, I find it is indispensably important to be balanced within and at ease with oneself so that the crap around you becomes just like water off a duck's back. I am in hometeaching but my school administration doesn't manage to pass on important information, guidelines etc. But instead of being angry, I know pretty well that everything is a challenge these days. Everybody needs to chill a bit I think. It is all a matter of mindset, nothing is lost.
Avatar 7:49am Buddha of Suburbia:

Good morning Jeffrey! Morning gang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning Buddha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50am Jeffrey Davison:

Heidee, wise words. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51am coelacanth∅:

Hmmm...Bob Dylan meets Nick Drake
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53am Jeffrey Davison:

801live, good morning. Kinda, yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53am fred:

@Heidee: Wise words indeed. Much has been lost though, but teachers find another way
Swag For Life Member 7:55am 12539:

(Ruth!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00am coelacanth∅:

Thanks Ruth!
Avatar 8:00am Heidee:

@fred, finding new ways is my name ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05am VT Knit Girl:

Jeffery, Double dip id still on the air! They have moved to Sheeas jungle room. Pls tell people they can be found there and not that there are not on the air!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07am Jeffrey Davison:

Aye-Aye: I could easily fill your shelves with photo books, and I'll try to get around to a list. One essential is Alec Soth's Sleeping By The Mississippi. More poets: Kathleen Raine, Frank O'Hara, Antonio Machado, Osip Mandelstam, James Merrill.
Avatar 8:08am Fredericks:

A Replacements album is a monograph?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09am Jeffrey Davison:

VT Knit Girl: So sorry! I misspoke. Too often I forget about the streams. Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09am Jeffrey Davison:

Fredericks: I guess so, ha! A kickass one, as long as it's not a split release! ;)
  8:10am Crei6hton:

Morning WFMU!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10am VT Knit Girl:

Thanks! I have the streams, you should check out the Stork Club on Sundays afternoons on the durmmer stream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11am VT Knit Girl:

meant to say love the streams, we all have them.
Avatar 8:11am Deborah:

@Heidee, fred, teachers Agreed. This year/semester(s) will be a challenge, "a shitstorm," as a student put it. These past three weeks were not good for my energies or my soma/psyche. (body/mind). Decided to let the agony go a bit; get done what I can and if students whine, so be it.
Avatar 8:12am Deborah:

Teachers have to reserve some of the encouragement and nurturing for themselves. I have finally started! "Are you a teacher of the heart?" ---Leonard Cohen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12am nortonjutland:

Another great show Jeffrey! thank you for making hard days a little easier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13am Jeffrey Davison:

nortonjutland, good morning, and thank you!
Avatar 8:13am Heidee:

@deborah, all so true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am Jeffrey Davison:

Deborah, thank you!!
Good morning, Crei6ton!
Thanks again, VT Knit Girl!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14am fred:

@Deborah: Of course you should nurture yourself. How could you give what you no longer have if you run yourself into the ground
Avatar 8:16am Deborah:

@fred. You too. Everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am Jeffrey Davison:

I tried to find Townes's Pancho and Lefty on Bandcamp, to follow the Charlie Stout song. Maybe next time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24am YETI BOB:

@Deborah: It's like when you fly and they tell you "Put Your Oxygen Mask on First, Before Assisting Others."
Avatar 8:25am TDK60:

Jeffrey, it's probably in the WFMU library. Sorry.
Avatar 8:25am Heidee:

Hi Yeti Bob :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26am YETI BOB:

Hallo Heidee, wie geht's?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26am Jeffrey Davison:

TDK60, I have on vinyl but I'm not set up to play LPs. Sad!
Good morning, YETI BOB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28am Jeffrey Davison:

This singer-songwriter, Richard Inman, reminds me a bit of Townes. Found his music this week, and really loving it. He's from Winnipeg.
Avatar 8:30am Heidee:

@Yeti Bob, supi danke. Just enjoying some salted porridge with banana and raw cocoa. Plus the music. Everything so comforting. - What are you up to?
Avatar 8:30am Deborah:

Yes, I hear Townes. Will look for more of his work.
  8:31am Aye-Aye:

Jeffrey: thanks again. Do you know the work of Thomas Joshua Cooper? Photographer of wild and remote places, and a Professor at Glasgow School of Art, just up the hill from here.
Avatar 8:32am Heidee:

Aye-Aye, Glesca Schuil o' Art, R.I.P.
Avatar 8:32am Heidee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32am Jeffrey Davison:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33am melinda:

Good morning Jeffrey and friends
  8:35am Earth Walker:

Jeffery Always lovin the music you play
Thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37am YETI BOB:

@Heidee: Just relaxing after a long work week. It's pretty early in the morning here. Others in my house are still sleeping, I have the radio on quietly for company.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37am Jeffrey Davison:

Aye-Aye: I found images on Google by Cooper. Wow. I came across the work of a young photographer from The Netherlands, Emma Pille, whose work I love. She's on Instagram #emmapille, and also:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38am Jeffrey Davison:

Good morning melinda!
Thanks Earth Walker!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40am Jeffrey Davison:

And of course, R.I.P. Ruth Bader Ginsburg. We lost a great one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43am Be Now Homeboy:

RIP .. we sure did lose a good one indeed. So sad... god knows what happens now with her seat. someone help us all ... Her greatest wish was that her seat not be replaced with Trump in office. Sad.. :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44am YETI BOB:

The timing is incredible. And the loathsome Senate Republicans want to ram through a Trump appointee, with 50 days to the election - when they refused to even consider Merrick Garland, the election was more than 7 months away. If McConnell gets reelected I'm going to be sick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44am fred:

2020 living up to its rep. I'll be drinking to RBG, later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45am Jeffrey Davison:

This is the album that Oregon Trail originally appeared on, if I'm not mistaken:
www.discogs.com... (1962)
Avatar 8:46am Heidee:

@Aye-Aye, just talked to my husband, who studied at Glasgow School of Art. He said he loved hanging about in his photography department. He also introduced him to Ry Cooder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am Jeffrey Davison:

YETI BOB: it's enough to drive you crazy.
fred: there ain't enough bourbon in that bottle.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46am YETI BOB:

IMO Trump's enablers in Congress are even worse than the man himself. I'm hoping they all get unseated. But let's get back to relaxing and enjoying the music - I can get myself pretty worked up over this stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47am fred:

@YETI BOB: prepare to be sick

Good to hear that Woody fella again.
  8:49am Andrew in Toronto:

Thanks, Jeffrey.
That was a great show, as always.
Avatar 8:49am Heidee:

P.S.@8:46: because he was playing "Paris, Texas" while working :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am YETI BOB:

@fred: I haven't been following closely, I guess Amy McGrath is not doing too well. Ugh. Anyhow, if they lose the senate majority, McConnell won't be so powerful, he'll just be a dumb senator from Kentucky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am Jeffrey Davison:

kpx, where is that quote from?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am Jeffrey Davison:

Thanks TDK60 and Andrew!
Avatar 8:52am Deborah:

@Yeti Bob, Be Now Homeboy, Jeffrey Davison I am sad and concerned as this country tips further and further to the right/wrong. Trying to not let it further impact this sense of existential angst. Coffee, this music, virtual list friends all help. Namaste.
Swag For Life Member 8:52am 12539:

Thanks, Jeffrey (and Ruth), for the little oasis. Stay well!
