Avatar 7:16pm hyde:

when was your Chicago run? i was supposed to go there next year for a conference but of course it's cancelled. i kind of want to go anyway, assuming the future world isn't in flames
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Gary:

Oh, man, I haven't been to Chicago for almost a decade
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm Franco Twinkie:

This is a crazy song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm Gary:

At least six or seven years, anyway -- Devon Ave was where I found some of this stuff

TGK! Is that block of Indian restaurants still in the east village - 6th street and 1st Ave?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Gary:

I think so, FT. This track, Hawa Hawaii, is one I have probably mentioned several times, and maybe pointed folks to before, but haven't apparently ever played before. The scene itself is outrageous: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Gary:

In this first part, she's spouting pure zaum
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Franco Twinkie:

Gary, we use to imagine they all shared one kitchen connected by a long hallway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Ike:

I walked by there a year or two ago -- some of those Indian restaurants are gone, some are still there. It's really diversified and there are a lot more authentic-looking Chinese restaurants in that general area now, plus loads of other stuff to appeal to NYU students.
Avatar 🥁 7:27pm WR:

One of my first great music finds in NYC in the 90s was an LP of Geeta Dutt, found in a long gone South Asian clothing and gift shop on Lexington in the upper 20s in Manhattan. Moved to Jackson Heights in 98 and soon I was scooping up DVDS for cheap. Got every Guru Dutt and Satyajit Ray movie and and dozens from other directors. Plus dozens of anthologies featuring playback singers or composers. Have yet to review and digest it all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Franco Twinkie:

Ike,I imagine the rents are insane now.
Avatar 7:29pm TDK60:

Oh Gary, forgot to say, thanks for all the reggae shows this summer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Gary:

You're welcome, TDK!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 7:36pm chresti:

That video is something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Doug Schulkind:

This gal Bhosle is pretty good. Has she made any other records?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Gary:

You're in luck, Doug!
Avatar 7:43pm TDK60:

I might've mentioned before, but my intro to Bollywood was via an Indian grocery, with tapes for $2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Gary:

This film is worth seeing for Shammi Kapoor -- which is more or less true of every film with Shammi Kapoor
Avatar 🥁 7:44pm WR:

As I began to learn about the genre and found that popular movies would usually be in 2 to 4 languages, with different singers and voice over actors I gave up on keeping track of it all. Happy to enjoy the gems that I know and whatever I happen to get hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm Gary:

My intro was seeing the film Khuda Gawa at the University of Minnesota and trying to track down the soundtrack for the next 10 years
Avatar 🥁 7:49pm WR:

Asha Bhosle and her sister Lata Mangeshkar between them have probably recorded as many songs as released by whole countries.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm spodiodi:

aloha, Gary and Bodega Poppers!

Avatar 8:22pm northguineahills:

finally back at the hotel....
Avatar 🥁 8:22pm WR:

Ok Manna Dey, he and Mohammed Rafi were nearly as prolific as Asha and Lata. Add in Kishore Kumar and the three gents probably approach the output of the 2 sisters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Gary:

NGH!
  8:26pm peter:

hey tim! and all & sundry
Avatar 🥁 8:27pm WR:

Roshan, Sahir Ludhianvi & Va Roshan are burning hot here. And they are all new to me. Dammit, you're tempting me to to start accumulating more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Ike:

Where in Brooklyn, just out of curiosity? Kensington? There are some Bangladeshi restaurants around the F stop at Church but I never found anything amazing there except for some really good naan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Gary:

Ike, on Coney Island Avenue around Avenue H
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Gary:

Haven't been there for a decade, so can't speak to what's there now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm ɛɨk:

Oh right, I think that's near where that one Indian or Pakistani restaurant used to be open 24 hours, and I went there once at 4 a.m. after a party and it was great. A very unusual/memorable moment for me.
Avatar 🥁 8:35pm WR:

Ok, the Barsaat Ki Raat song Karvaan Ki Talash Hai" (Yeh Ishq Ishq Hai) according to Wikipedia features the singers Asha Bhosle, Sudha Malhotra, Mohammed Rafi, Manna Dey, S. D. Batish, so not whole new crew but does look like a movie worth seeing.
Avatar 8:37pm northguineahills:

Outside of random finds in junk stores in Brooklyn, I used to love the Pakistani restaurant on 9th and 46th for cdrs near the port authority....
Avatar 🥁 8:38pm WR:

ɛɨk @835, memories like that are truly memorable. I have a few like that.
Avatar 🥁 8:42pm WR:

This jump to 1994 (even with the rap) was not jarring from the earlier qawwali song. At least not with the expert bodega pop segue.
  8:42pm rw:

Digging this insanity.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm chresti:

I imagine there are videos for all these songs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Gary:

Your imagination is very much correct
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Gary:

Not *all* of them will be on YouTube, but most will
Avatar 🥁 8:51pm WR:

So far they are all from movies, hence the Bollywood reference.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:53pm chresti:

The ones I've seen match the insanity of the music.
www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Gary:

Yes! Hit filmi geet = hit film songs - everything here is from Hindi cinema. Almost branched out into Telugu and Tamil, but decided to stick to Hindi for the evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Gary:

Chresti, there is another even more insane clip from Caravan ... lemme see if I can find it for you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Gary:

Here you go: www.youtube.com...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm chresti:

Thanks Gary!
  8:59pm peter:

Gary, I think I know the spot you mean on Coney Island Ave & Ave H (although I had been thinking it was on Utica..?).. The one experience I had there was regrettably brief, as the owner was playing porn on his personal TV (you could hear the sound, and it was rather loud, but not see) which understandably lessened the time my companion was willing to hang around.. :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Gary:

Haha, oh man, that's ... wow, Peter. There were several places I used to stop by on Coney Island Ave, all around H, generally ... used to bike or bus down there from where I lived at the top of Ocean Parkway
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:04pm chresti:

I'm finding some older bollywood videos, some kind of blurry, adds to the charm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Gary:

They did a lot of the Vaseline on the lens trick in the 50s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm spodiodi:

really enjoying the music, Gary
Avatar 9:17pm StringOFperils:

Me too. Been a long day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm spodiodi:
