Gary, checking in from the barbecue epicenter of this grim country.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Gary:

I'm sure you guys all know, but if not, Tim hosts the incredible Moroccan Tape Stash blog, where you can find some of the music we're playing tonight: moroccantapestash.blogspot.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Gary:

Franco Twinkie! And Mzzm, you snuck in there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Gary:

Some music also came from moroccantapes.com and from lazyproduction-arabtunes.blogspot.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm Gary:

And some from my own CDs found here in Astoria, in Bayridge, and Marrakesh
Avatar 7:15pm LambdaCalculus:

I need to dig through the tape stash again!
Avatar 🥁 7:18pm tim abdellah:

We're open 24-7, Lambda! I haven't posted there for a while, but there's plenty of stuff from years past.
  7:20pm mzzm:

oh no i got run but I will played it back from the archive later. It's my kind'a music.
  7:20pm Maia:

Started bringing my headphones to work for this :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm Gary:

Maia! So happy to see you!
  7:24pm northguineahills:

Gary! Why you Maghrebi rai off of that? (Finishing work) (Doug-worthy pun, right there).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Gary:

NGH! Pun on in, the water's rhyme
Avatar 🥁 7:26pm tim abdellah:

Love me some Lemchaheb. They were one of the first Moroccan groups I ever heard. Picked up this CD at Down Home in El Cerrito about 30 years ago: www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm Gary:

I love the cover of that one! Tim, I just reread your Lemchaheb are not the Village Green post last night and was cracking up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Gary:

For those of you who may not have read it yet: moroccantapestash.blogspot.com...
Avatar 🥁 7:30pm tim abdellah:

Oh I like these Dissidenten collaborations!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Gary:

I love this album, too, but I can't say the same for the one Dissidenten did with Jil Jilala. Do I need to back and relisten?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Franco Twinkie:

I love this record too! They were so out in front when this came out.
Avatar 🥁 7:33pm tim abdellah:

I kind of like the Dissidenten/Jil Jilala one as well. Especially the first cut with the really crunchy guitar chords! It's been a while since I listened to it, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Gary:

I just discogged this one and I didn't realize how early it is: 1983
  7:37pm northguineahills:

Ther last family interviewed was an Moroccan immigrant family. I blared you’re program w/ the windows open as I left.

NHH, report from the field...
Avatar 🥁 7:39pm tim abdellah:

That blogpost of mine is pretty funny - I had fun with the side-by-side Lemchaheb and Jefferson Starship photos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Gary:

Tim, I am so beyond in love with this band, why are they third on the triumvirate rung, is it just b/c they were third to start up?
Avatar 7:49pm LambdaCalculus:

I have to say too that this is a damn good band.
Avatar 🥁 7:49pm tim abdellah:

I think that is part of the reason. They did get started after NG/JJ were already successful.
  7:50pm Maia:

This playlist is amazing!! Holy cow
Avatar 🥁 7:52pm tim abdellah:

Damn - this is a Gnawa quote
Avatar 7:52pm TDK60:

Hello Gary and Bodega Popstars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Gary:

Avatar 🥁 7:54pm tim abdellah:

Also, NG/JJ drew almost exclusively on Moroccan traditional musical sources (instruments and songs/genres). This was a huge deal because up to that point, modernity in Moroccan music was being sought on a Middle Eastern model - big string orchestras a la Umm Kulthum. So when Lemchaheb came out using non-Moroccan instruments like bouzouk, and non-Moroccan musical elements like vocal polyphony, it may have been seen as diluting the Moroccan modernity of NG/JJ with outside elements.
Avatar 🥁 7:56pm tim abdellah:

But that's also one of the things that makes them so interesting, and their music sometimes more eclectic.
Avatar 🥁 7:57pm tim abdellah:

Don't ask that Google lady how to speak Moroccan!!
Avatar 🥁 7:57pm tim abdellah:

You are pronouncing the name correctly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Gary:

Haha, OMG, now I have to rethink my whole relationship with Google Translate Lady
Avatar 🥁 8:07pm WR:

tim, I downloaded a couple of your blog tape shares. Tried to make a comment but Firefox & blogspot & blogger & google cannot agree on the signon protocol. you have some spammer hitting your May post. And thank you so much for the sounds and the explanations!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Gary:

Tim's blog is the Gold Standard
Avatar 🥁 8:10pm tim abdellah:

Thanks WR! Sorry about the trouble with the comment box.
Avatar 🥁 8:18pm WR:

Tim the comment box is nothing for you to worry about. I was just excusing myself for not leaving a comment. As typical, the next post I read, suddenly the page recognized the g account I was trying to use.
  8:21pm mzzm:

back. glad it still in the same venue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm Gary:

We were going to move to a bigger space with a better rug, but then we remembered you had stepped out, so we stayed here for you, mzzm
Avatar 🥁 8:23pm tim abdellah:

This song is so cool - though I'm still sort of conflicted about the synthetic sounds. I mean why use a synth bass when you have the great guinbri player Mustapha Baqbou in your band!
Avatar 🥁 8:24pm tim abdellah:

Above comment was for "Dib El Ghaba". On this track "Mali ya Mali" you can hear the actual guinbri.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Gary:

They also used what sounded like a drum machine on I think Assalamou alykoume
Avatar 🥁 8:25pm tim abdellah:

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm chresti:

Love this Jilala.
Avatar 🥁 8:30pm tim abdellah:

It's worth pointing out that Jil Jilala experimented with these electronic sounds in the early 1990s, almost 20 years after they began their career. So this is long after the time we were discussing earlier re: modernism and Moroccan-ness.
Avatar 8:34pm northguineahills:

back at the hotel. Clicky finger, do your thang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Gary:

Get hyped for the next set with this post from Tim on Nass El Ghiwane's 2nd album (which we'll hear from later tonight): moroccantapestash.blogspot.com...
Avatar 8:51pm northguineahills:

wait, I can get more hyped? I'll need a tranquilizer!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:52pm chresti:

I'm stoked!
Avatar 🥁 9:03pm tim abdellah:

I was lucky that I chose Mediafire to host the files - so many other platforms from those early blog days have been removed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Gary:

How did Mediafire stay out of the line of fire? Fight fire with fire?
Avatar 🥁 9:08pm tim abdellah:

I know! It was basically a random choice by me to use Mediafire when I started the blog.
Avatar 🥁 9:08pm tim abdellah:

Boudjemaa Hgour was one of the original members and creative forces of the group. He died very young, in 1974
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Gary:

He appears on that second album you posted
Avatar 🥁 9:11pm tim abdellah:

This album is called Hommage a Boudjemaa because it contains mid-70s remakes of songs they originally recorded with him a few years earlier.
Avatar 🥁 9:14pm tim abdellah:

That being said, these versions are, for many, THE definitive versions of these songs, because that 2nd album with Boudjemaa is so hard to find. It remains unavailable on any of the streaming platforms, and I've never seen any sort of re-release of it. I wonder if the masters are lost.
Avatar 9:16pm TDK60:

Great stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Gary:

My gosh, this is just -- Tim you gotta help get this back into print it's ethereal
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:25pm chresti:

What TDK60 said. Hi TDK60.
Avatar 🥁 9:27pm tim abdellah:

I would love to see it!! The record sleeve says it was recorded in France, and it has a Polydor imprint. I'd imagine that a master tape or at least a clean vinyl copy exists somewhere.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:28pm chresti:

Thank you for the great blog posts, Tim.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Gary:

There's one for sale in Spain: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:29pm TDK60:

Hola Chresti, been a while. Smokey there?
Avatar 🥁 9:29pm WR:

Great great music. I must admit I'm not saying much because my thoughts keep straying into Rolling Stones Jefferson Kinks similes. . .
Avatar 🥁 9:32pm tim abdellah:

@Gary - yikes - $300!! (and only VG+)
@chresti - it's a pleasure to be able to share thoughts and tunes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Gary:

Hey, Kids! Do you like mUsiC? Wow, then, you're going to LOVE Sam Segal's all-Music radio program, If You Lose Your Horse! It's about music, but so much more. Sound. Patterns of sound. People singing. People playing. Something for everyone! Tonight's episode: "Halfway to 500 Horses": wfmu.org...
Avatar 🥁 9:34pm tim abdellah:

This song "Essiniya" is one of their first big hits. This one features Boudjemaa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Gary:

I guess there is a Nass El Ghiwane Cassette T-Shirt: www.redbubble.com...
Avatar 🥁 9:38pm tim abdellah:

This song is "Mahamouni", not "Lebtana"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:40pm chresti:

TDK60 yes, sometimes smokier than others.
Avatar 9:40pm TDK60:

Gee Gary, I like music too. Sounds. People playing, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Gary:

Oh shoot, what? I have Mahamouni queued up next ... argh
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm chresti:

It seems stronger in the morning, I guess because the wind changes overnight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Gary:

Or wait, no I have Mahmouna queued up next
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:43pm chresti:

Get your Ms in order.
Avatar 🥁 9:44pm tim abdellah:

"Mahamouni" is different from "Mahmouma"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Gary:

I was busy minding my Ps and Qs and totally forgot about the Ms
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Gary:

To, like, the Nth degree
Avatar 🥁 9:46pm tim abdellah:

Avatar 🥁 9:47pm WR:

The sky in the east coast has been hazy grey for a couple of days and I read that it is from the fires on the west coast. It said that the haze is high altitude so not affecting air quality for us on the ground.
Avatar 9:53pm TDK60:

WR I can see it more at sunset. The Sun real dark orange and not as shiny. / Is this the Arabic version of banjo I hear?
Avatar 9:53pm northguineahills:

Beautiful, Gary! Inshallah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Ike:

Awesome. Morocco was my last trip in the Before Times, LOL. I didn't like everything about it but I enjoyed listening to the radio! One good station was called Cor-Med6 (I think) but I'm not sure I've ever found it on the net (or I can't be sure given that I don't read or speak Arabic or French).
Avatar 🥁 9:58pm tim abdellah:

Yes - banjo for sure, though it looks like an American-style banjo (without the frets). I'm very curious about how it ended up being used across North Africa.
Avatar 9:58pm TDK60:

Oh, it's time to go? Thanks Gary and Tim too..
Avatar 9:58pm LambdaCalculus:

Thanks for a great show tonight,Gary!
