Hey Mark, nice to hear you live. That documentary was good, but I already learned so much listening to your show!

I guess it might not be right vs. left, but it *is* capital vs. the rest of us. Not in our name.

Shut it down!

Just tuning in. I met Steve when I was in Boston in summer of 2011! I think he told me I should drop out of highschool, haha. I didn’t take his advice, ended up going to college, and years later realized he had a point.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Handy Haversack:

The person hours that the nonprofit where I work spends on Facebook, Instag, Twiter -- pretty much talking only to the social media staffs at other nonprofits in our industry ... well, capital either eats us or eats for us, right?
  6:35pm David in London:

Hi spodiodi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Handy Haversack:

Excellent point. Computers do what they are told. Facebook works exactly as its officers have directed it to work.

Kind of like the ‘entrepreneurship’ of some of the tech zillionaire. First invent the internet...
(Mariana Mazzucato etc.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Handy Haversack:

What a radical concept: delivering one's people from a plague because they are literally the content of your system. I wonder if such wildness could ever catch on.

"It' sick -- the price of medicine." -- OLD-school Psychedelic Furs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm spodiodi:

i agree with james (i erased what i'd typed, partly because it included that name at all)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm chresti:

Hi spodi!
  6:44pm kevlicki:

Great to hear Steve on here. I know him from the activist art world
  6:44pm P-90:

This “high prices finance new drugs” story capitalizes ruthlessly on the lack of understanding by the public that most of this research is done at universities.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm a5vzener:

I'm a believer in capitalism, because it's only real way to get stuff out of a lab and into the public's hands. But I believe we should extract more from our capitalists in the way of taxes, in large part to help people afford drugs, etc.
  6:44pm P-90:

I’ve been fuming about this for years...
  6:45pm kevlicki:

Mark, you should swing by the 79th st Greenmarket some future Sunday. I’m behind the wood Thrush Farm stand every week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Handy Haversack:

And researchers at universities spend thousands of hours a year securing and securing the renewal of federal funding for that research. So, again, we've paid for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm spodiodi:

and thanks, Mark!
and brainiac, Handy, David in London, chresti! good to see you all.
and hello, kevlicki!
  6:45pm P-90:

Relying on capitalism “to get drugs out of the lab” is the WORST way to do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Mark Hurst:

@kev thx, would like that!
Avatar 6:46pm dk50b:

@Handy Haversack songs of that era decrying our drift towards fascism seem so quaint now
  6:46pm kevlicki:

A5enezerdefine please define “capitalism”,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm brainiac:

Healthcare run as a business instead of a service puts profit above people EVERY TIME.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm a5vzener:

capitalism = private (non-governmental) ownership of the means of production, essentially.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Mark Hurst:

The five prior capitalism-focused interviews I mentioned at the top of the show all have varying definitions, different opinions about the ideal system etc. etc., but all are united on the basic diagnosis that our current Big Tech-driven system must change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm a5vzener:

But also believe that healthcare should not be primarily private. I live in Canada and I like our system up here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Handy Haversack:

R.E.M. was trying at least, dk50b!

brainiac: and that's bad, right? Because it *sounds* bad.
  6:50pm Sam:

This guest has a really sexy voice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm brainiac:

It's as bad as bad can be, Handyman.
  6:52pm P-90:

For a long time I’ve argued that one of the strongest arguments for the adoption of universal healthcare is the negotiating power a government healthcare administration would have: “We’re purchasing X-billion units of this drug or surgical tool. We’re not the only game in town but by far the biggest. Now: who’s got the most competitive bid for our order?”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm a5vzener:

All I'm missing in my life is Dolly Parton.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Handy Haversack:

Glistener Knormalish pointed out how many problems would likely be solved if we could get Dolly Parton to want to be president.
Avatar 6:52pm northguineahills:

nice!

thanks Mark and Steve!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Handy Haversack:

P-90, I wonder if there are other problems of capitalism that could be solved by socialism. Maybe a private company will research that!

Today's ep. was like coming home, Mark! Thanks so much for it. Thanks, Steve Lambert.

Be well, Techyon Particles. Sure was good to be here with youse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm spodiodi:

Thanks, Mark and Steve!
  6:55pm David in London:

Thanks Mark. Good night all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm spodiodi:

good night, David!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm a5vzener:

@P-90 You're right. Big government negotiation is the key. When I was in journalism school (early 90s) I did a story about the cost of one of those morning-after pills. The cost for one in France was about 10 bucks, versus more than 100 in NYC. Vive le gouvernement!
  6:57pm kevlicki:

A5vzener agreed that state control doesn’t represent my ideal. I’d argue for more “democracy” in the workplace and more owners of the means of production.
Historically it appears that capitalism constantly attempts to reduce those factors, while privatize what is shared commonly and extract it for the benefit of fewer folks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm Handy Haversack:

Ha, awesome, Mark! I'll tell Knormalish you quoted her on WAB tomorrow!

'Night, David!
  6:57pm P-90:

Dolly’s much too smart to get involved in such a foolish enterprise...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:57pm ultradamno:

How many Mr. sodas are there...aside from Pibb?
Avatar 6:57pm Bas NL:

Thanks Mark!
  6:57pm Sam:

Netflix is evil though, right?
  6:58pm kevlicki:

Stay healthy and well everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm Handy Haversack:

The one true Mr., ultradamno.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm spodiodi:

none, ultra, afaik. one of my old monikers
Avatar 6:58pm Sonderangebot:

The heavy cost of the healthcare system could be lightened if consumerist culture fueled by capitalism (hyper processed food; pollution; lack of physical activity; poverty; dependency on petrol) calmed down
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm ultradamno:

Señor Cola?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm brainiac:

Keep fighting the good fight, Mark.

Good night all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm a5vzener:

Thanks, Mark. great show!
  6:59pm P-90:

Bravo, Mark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Mark Hurst:

Thanks, everyone, for tuning in! Appreciate all your good comments & your encouragement this evening.
Avatar 6:59pm dk50b:

Handy nothing against politically conscious artists, more that no one, myself included, imagined how low we'd sink
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm Handy Haversack:

Heard, dk50b,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm chresti:
