The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

Avatar 9:13pm Franco Twinkie:

Davie Allen has an understated and droll sense of humor. I saw him once on The Santa Monica Pier and he told this story about how he was playing and Arthur Lee looked at him intently puzzled, then walked away. It was so anti climatic, it was hilarious....I guess you had to be there.
Avatar 9:13pm Mailman Tom:

That's a relief to know!

Caveman, When The Seeds were on 9th Street West, which seemed like all the time, Daryl Hooper would have a candelabra on top of his Wurlitzer electric piano. It was elegant and funny and cheesy all at the same time. Plus, he had longer hair that any other rock guy at the time, which only enhanced the effect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm coelacanth∅:

"sick and tired" is on a cassette i recorded off Bill Kelly's show c.1982?
when i got my present car, which has tape as well as cd i put that tape in and played it over and over

Now I'll have to watch Mondo Hollywood!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm Gina Bacon:

Hey, Rod!
Avatar 9:45pm WLSClark:

A song so good they put it on 2 Kapp LPs in a row here!
Avatar 9:45pm Jay S.:

Searchers, always underrated in the U.S.
Avatar 9:45pm Rod:

Cool Bob, I still have to finish watching it
Avatar 9:46pm bigplanetnoise:

Can I clicky star my own show's songs?!?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm Gaylord Fields:

You must!
Avatar 9:47pm Jay S.:

Sure, why not?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Gina Bacon:

You sure can!
  9:47pm CC:

Here is the vocalist who is still alive one of my favorites!!!...:)
Avatar 9:47pm bigplanetnoise:

Clark - that's a fascinating thing that happened here in the U.S. quite a bit. On the albums that were assembled here by the "U.S. team"... They never bothered to look and see what was used previously!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48pm Gaylord Fields:

@bpn: The Imperial Hollies LPs have repeats, and I don't mind.
Avatar 9:48pm Jay S.:

This sounds kind of Motown-ish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Gina Bacon:

It really does, Jay!
Avatar 9:49pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - exactly!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm chresti:

Yeah, agree Jay S.
  9:50pm CC:

Oh yeah!!!...:)
Avatar 9:50pm Franco Twinkie:

Okay, I didn't know till right now. Sad. I'm sure I've said this before, but it bears repeating. When I first saw Jan Savage in early 1966 I had not yet heard the word 'hippie' I though he was trying to look like one on the Indians on F-Troop, one of my favorite TV shows at the time. Of course Frank DeCova was an Italian and Jan Savage was a real Native American. That's Hollywood for you.
  9:51pm caveman dave:

Franco - Iron Eyes Cody was also Italian. As you prolly know.
Avatar 9:51pm bigplanetnoise:

That's Hollywood, indeed!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm coelacanth∅:

i'd never heard that animals song before just now, and coincidentally was given some albums over the weekend -including 2 animals albums, one containing help me girl
  9:52pm CC:

I love watching all those Old Wagon Train episodes Franco!!!...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm coelacanth∅:

kinks every week!
Avatar 9:53pm WLSClark:

Yeah Bob, I could not believe how Searchers 4 and Take me For What LPs were so close in tracks. Crazy even for what you said.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm Gaylord Fields:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm chresti:

Help me Girl is such a great song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Gina Bacon:

That's a nice happenstance, coelacanthø!
Avatar 9:55pm Jay S.:

Gale Garnett, who was a Canadian born in New Zealand, used to play Native Americans on TV Westerns...that's really Hollywood for you
Avatar 9:55pm Mailman Tom:

Those are some of the best vocals I've ever heard from Mick Jagger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm coelacanth∅:

why don't i play the kinks every afternoon when i have tea?

i'm clearly an idiot.
  9:55pm Tim from LH:

Wouldn’t it be nice to go to a cafe again and have a Tea or Coffee ?
Avatar 9:55pm Kris Holmes:

My wife maintains that Eric Burdon onnthe Sunset Strip c.2013 is one of her most grueling concert experiences ever lol
Avatar 9:55pm Franco Twinkie:

Dave, I have to think about this, but I saw Iron eyes someplace wearing a war bonnet, He was a senile old man who had become the public service fantasy. Funny, weird and embarrassing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm Gina Bacon:

It would, Tim.
Avatar 9:56pm bigplanetnoise:

Mailman - I agree 10000% - it's the best Jagger vocal ever recorded.
Avatar 9:56pm Snayle:

aww.. Wayne...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm chresti:

Haha coel.
Avatar 9:56pm Julie P.:

R.I.P. Wayne Fontana.
  9:57pm CC:

I think Eric Burdon's song Heaven is absolutely fantastic!!!...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 9:58pm WLSClark:

I'm guessing Tomorrow is coming too.
  9:58pm caveman dave:

I was watching "American Pickers" Franco - too much time on my hands that day! - and they found someone who had Iron Eyes' original teepee that he used for personal appearances, plus a scrapbook full of old photos. Strange, odd, and weird Americana right there.
Avatar 9:59pm WLSClark:

caveman, I saw that episode too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm Gina Bacon:

Wow, caveman dave.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm coelacanth∅:

Tim @9.55 i've enjoyed the café experience a few times recently. sitting outside, as i would anyway.
Avatar 10:00pm Kip Brown:

Is this the original of this or is the version on the Twink "Think Pink" album the original?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Gaylord Fields:

I didn't know about Mark Wirtz. :(
Avatar 10:02pm Kris Holmes:

Main melodic idea is similar to “Here Come The Girls” by Ernie K Doe
  10:02pm CC:

Of course we all know that record collectors look at things totally different than the General Public!!!...:)
  10:02pm Tim from LH:

@coel, I’ve had some good outdoor dining experiences myself, the coffee shops all grab and go.
  10:04pm CC:

Overtones of Donovan here?!?...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm coelacanth∅:

Gina well i think they only had one album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm chresti:

Whoa, this is great.
Avatar 10:06pm Franco Twinkie:

Just before the show my sister and I were talking about all the movie we saw as kids. One, a double bill of How to Stuff A Wild Bikini with Go Go Mania, where The Animals do House Of The Rising Sun. At that point we started calling Eric Burdon Devil Guy, Still do. She saw them a couple of years later during their Sky Pilot period, with a full on salad oil light show that had embedded movies of the war in Vietnam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm chresti:

  10:06pm watchpocket:

Whoa shades of Tull!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm coelacanth∅:

nope. i just looked and i'm quite mistaken.

Avatar 10:15pm Snayle:

Pigling Bland would be such a cool band or even stage name...
  10:16pm CC:

This kind of reminds me of Chick Corea or maybe Jesse Colin Young???...:)
Avatar 10:16pm WLSClark:

Bob, just SOOO thanksful you did the Shames and Bucks mono tracks as stereo too. Those are awesome.
Avatar 10:16pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar 10:28pm Andy R:

Now, I'm right in thinking this was the same Vanguard that did a lot of jazz albums too?
Avatar 10:28pm WLSClark:

Love the loose ending..
  10:29pm Beantown Doug:

It was draft time for my brother, and his number was 8! It seemed certain he would be ordered to report for his physical, but then the draft ended and he was given a free pass. Whew!
  10:29pm watchpocket:

Seems like when you do hear this, it's the Woodstock version. The original is more whimsical.
  10:29pm Tim from LH:

I just watched the Woodstock doc on Netflix last night!
Avatar 10:29pm Snayle:

Kazooos !
Avatar 10:29pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Gina Bacon:

Whew indeed, Beantown!
Avatar 10:29pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - hahahahahahahaha!
Avatar 10:30pm Kris Holmes:

Country Joe gets a bad rap for the “F***” thing. So much more interesting than that. First couple of albums, the one with the purple cover especially, are great.
  10:30pm caveman dave:

this is gonna sound made up, but it's true. Me and my hippie pals in college sang this a capella at anti-war rallies, not in front of anybody but just among ourselves.

  10:33pm CC:

Of course there's a lot of solo Country Joe that is essential!!!...:)
Avatar 10:33pm Kris Holmes:

CC: yes, that first one is great. Funny enough the first CJ I ever owned was the solo Woody Guthrie one.
Avatar 10:34pm vanhooserd:

Andy R: Vanguard was big in folk (Joan Baez) & classical, but also did jazz & rock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 10:43pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

The January 1968 BBC session Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band did is so awesome - i wonder if it has ever been released officially? BBC aired it a few years ago in much better quality than I have heard before.

Avatar 10:47pm WLSClark:

Problemsom, there's a good reason, I'm sure. IF you have good vinyl, try using the Center Cut program. It gets rid of all the noisy pops.

@10:44 Gina Bacon: that Jan'68 Beefheart Peel session absolutely recommended if you can find it somewhere and hopefully listenable quality.
Avatar 10:51pm vanhooserd:

The first Monk I heard was the Underground LP. My friend who liked "weird stuff" (Lenny Bruce, Lord Buckley, Biff Rose) bought it for the cover & name. We knew nothing about jazz but we loved it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Gina Bacon:

It makes sense to me!

You drew that line perfectly

It's great, Matt! Very thought provoking. It takes several views to figure it all out, very 60s.
Avatar 10:59pm bigplanetnoise:

Matt - good here. I complained to Gina today about being in a lousy mood. But all this sure helps!!!

I like that 1968 Grateful Dead Film by Robert Nelson very much. The music is cut up into crazy chaos but it still workds. I might have said this 100 times but it was cool to see it recently and newly restored - in analog! In glorious 16mm instead of DCP or something.
  11:07pm CC:

It was like he was channeling Monty Python or something?!?...:)
  11:08pm Eargasm!:

I expect we may hear Frantic Desolation which always struck me as an attempt at psychedelic ragtime
Avatar 11:08pm Julie P.:

Photocopy, I agree. You can't beat 16mm. There's a certain quality to it.

Gina. Seems likely your Uncle Paul worked with Peter Keepnews father at Riverside Records.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm Gaylord Fields:

My high school English teacher looked down on me with disdain when he asked everyone in the class what we were curently reading for pleasure and my answer was Vonnegut. To this day I don't know why he reacted with such snobbery and dismissiveness.
Avatar 11:29pm vanhooserd:

Garcia optioned the film rights to 'The Sirens of Titan' but never got the film made. The Dead named their publishing company Ice Nine, inspired by 'Cat's Cradle'.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm Gaylord Fields:

No kidding, Gina. I went to a very prestigious high school, but still, why discourage anyone from reading? And it's not as if he then recommended someone else for me to read. I think that's when I realized some teachers were full of unadulterated USDA Grade A hooey.
Avatar 11:33pm bigplanetnoise:

I could go for some toaster pizza right now.... and tequila.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm Gaylord Fields:

Matt, for the record, I dismissed his sneering attitude as his problem and carried on with Vonnegut.

Avatar 11:38pm prguitar:

Understand Rick.. We were often gigging on weekends so at times there was some extra money, even so, LP's were still a stretch for us.. having to be judicious with our purchases for sure, but Blue Cheer was an 'impulse buy' after seeing them on Bandstand.. we wanted to hear it all, and admittedly back then, much of the album took a while to settle in.. "Summertime Blues" seemed the most accessible track at the time..
Avatar 11:38pm WLSClark:

gaylord, I like that Ambrosia song. BTW, we ALL went to prestigious high schools--we just didn't graduate, right?
