@dutchtheo: Remember the spring pledge drive? How you gave me the Sun Ra/John Cage DVD you won? Just wanted to let you know that I have watched it, and it is wonderful. Absolutely terrible photography but great performances by Ra on synthesizer and Cage doing a very peculiar spoken syllable performance. So, thanks again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Gina Bacon:

The statement John Lewis left to be published after his death is extraordinary.

Thank you, Sem!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am doctorjazz:

(Having real trouble counting it)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

Terrific description of the scene here:

"The crown jewel of Koliphone Records, Grazia's debut album is by far one of the most intriguing pieces of music to ever be recorded in Israel Jaffa in the late sixties and early seventies had an exciting and exotic sound to offer, where folk musicians performed live at its taverns seven nights a week. It was far from the mainstream hit-parade of swinging Tel-Aviv but close enough geographically to attract listeners from across the Tel-Aviv-Jaffa metropolis. The scene got bigger and wilder as it embraced the Middle Eastern celebration style known as "Hafla", involving heavy drinking, local food and music of course Standing at the center of old Jaffa and it's vibrant music scene was the record store and label, Koliphone Records. Owned by the Azoulay brothers, Koliphone tirelessly recorded these artists and sold their records to the growing masses."
  10:06am Listener Gregory:

You'd think they'd be satisfied with one Rampi, but no.
Avatar 10:08am WR:

Caution. Do not operate heavy machinery or computers affecting hundreds of workers when in a semi conscious waking state.. it is recommended to operate simple listening devices and consume caffeine pending further developments.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Does she have to spell it out for you?

On rampi - Off rampi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

Trying to count the beats makes me a little dizzy, doctorjazz. Surely the desired effect.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
Same thing with my father. He could recall intimate details of moments during the Battle of the Bulge, but couldn't tell me what he'd just had for breakfast.
  10:40am Linda Lee:

we all do, Doug. thank you. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am sinner:

Best compliment I ever heard about John Lewis was from a life-long native Lowndes County voting activist who was also a farmer: "Lewis' head was as hard as a $5 axe handle."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

@Stanley
More like, flute, tenor sax, manzello, and stritch. No, really.

  11:13am Listener Gregory:

Did not know of that Tommy Flanagan recording with the young Coltrane. Interesting! I wouldn't have thought Coltrane fit in with Flanagan's style.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

@sinner
Oh my. I would like to know more, Sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

@chresti
Thanks! I missed you!
Avatar 11:14am Brian in UK:

The Strangers were on Voodoo Funk premium compiled by Frank Gossner 2009.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Flanagan was an interesting choice for Coltrane's Giant Steps date. The music for "Giant Steps" itself was notoriously difficult to play, and wouldn't you know it, Flanagan get terribly lost during the recording. But they kept that take anyway and used it on the record.
  11:17am Listener Gregory:

Yes, it is unfortunate that many only know Flanagan from that record. (He does fine on the other cuts.) It was just unfair to pop that music in front of someone at the session and expect him to play it. Music students spend weeks studying it. Flanagan is really great.
  11:18am Listener Gregory:

Have to run to go outside while the sun shines. Thanks for an excellent show, Doug. You can play any old crap now that I'm leaving.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
I love and cherish that compilation.

@Listener Gregory
I love the humanity of the decision to retain that flawed version of "Giant Steps," with Flanagan's troubles. That's life. Life is hard. It's still beautiful!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am sinner:

I try to make them dismantle their excuses and rationalizations. They know they did wrong and they are embarrassed and sorry, but they don't know how to express it. I try to give them a few ideas.
