Scratchy vanity 45s, pilfered field recordings, muddy off-the-radio sounds, homemade congregational tapes and vintage commercial gospel throw-downs; a little preachin', a little salvation, a little audio tomfoolery.

John Lewis suffered a skull fracture fighting for what's just. now, people argue over wearing a mask to keep their fellow citizen from getting a potentially fatal disease. Perspective.

Old Dave:

So, I grew up in a community segregated in strange ways. Virginia in the 1970's. We dropped in from Wisconsin, had no idea the history and hurt but were taught straight off by black neighbors where we belonged. They preferred us to keep away. The belief that our current strife is entirely one-sided is dumb as hell. Sorry, you asked Kev

  Swag For Life Member 8:39pm
Jinx:

for 54 consecutive days, protesters have gathered at the Robt E. Lee monument in Richmond, Va. The monument is owned by the state, so the city can't take it down, yet (bureaucracy, not politics). Tuesday night, a Richmond area friend of Elijah McClain organized a memorial concert at the monument. About 30 violinists, cellists, violaists, performed for about an hour. it was emotional.
Avatar 👋 Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
Uncle Michael:

The city could ban the monument and remove the state's property to safeguard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm
mariano:

Oh yeah that was great, sufferwords. As I recall, sinner was there too.

Old Dave: that's one of the most insidious things about a segregated social order, that it becomes habit even among many people on the wrong end of the equation to enforce its norms, if only out of a sense of self-preservation. There might be some equivalence there if both groups had true social and political equality, but that's just never been the case. Not just in the South but all over the country. Everyone's capable of bigotry, but systemic racism is something only the people running the system can perpetrate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm

Jinx:

no can do, UM. the Virginia Constitution is guided by the Dillon Rule. essentially, if the state constitution doesn't explicitly state municipalities are allowed to do something, consider it prohibited.
  8:51pm
Old Dave:

Hey, Jinx I hear you.My history teacher in 4th grade was none other than Betty Weaver, who has the school named for her now and wrote the freakin book they may still use to teach State history there.
Our class made a pilgramage to Derwent, the tiny box of a house where Lee retired. Strange stuff!
The statue was then famous because his horse, Traveller, had a hive of honey bees living inside. It was
not minded by Richmond officials at the point where that city and Atlanta were roughly the same size.
Both cities elected black officials in the late 1960s and one of them prospered... it wasn't the statue's fault!
