Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03pm chresti:

Happy B-Day Joanne!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

....if only there was a way we could make the poor Guitar louder to compete with all those other instruments - alas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm chresti:

LL, my parents' house in the East Bay, used to be occupied by Hells Angels, before that it was used as a hunting cabin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm Linda Lee:

i can imagine the vibe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Linda Lee:

human potential when it's not purposefully smothered.. is a marvelous & miraculous thing
Avatar 12:08pm StringOFperils:

Hallo Storkie ! Herzlich Mittags !
  12:09pm Dean:

Maybeck Recital Hall is an amazing venue. It has changed hands and the name has adjusted since this recording, but the space remains stunning, sonically and visually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ventura - between Santa Barbara where I was & L.A.
Avatar 12:10pm WR:

You set them up Stork and we will knock them down.
Avatar 12:11pm Wolfgang:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well I'm a fan in two minutes.
Avatar 12:11pm Wolfgang:

Hey, Jeff!! Noce shew as ever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm chresti:

I spent a lot of time visiting my friend in Ventura in the 80s, and then SB in the 90s, RevRab
Avatar 12:12pm Wolfgang:

That's nice, not noce.
  12:13pm Dean:

Comment at Berkeleyside from Merrilee Trost: "I was publicist for Concord Records when we first started Concord's historic run there. Dick Whittington, Joan Kenston and I tried to talk Carl Jefferson into recording, but he was resistant. Joanne Brackeen called Jefferson the day of her performance there and he relented. Sent Phil Edwards out with his truckful of recording equipment and the rest is history."
Avatar 12:13pm Wolfgang:

WR - missed ya! Found ya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I wonder if we passed each other chresti !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm chresti:

I bet, esp. in SB, on State st., RevRab.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm chresti:

That's a nice looking house, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A lot of Modern Classical in her - which is dumb to say because everybody does - but you know what I mean. Right now reminds of McCoy. Immeadiately strong & impressive!
Avatar 12:18pm Wolfgang:

Wow, Dean! Thank you for that! Great story!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This ensemble playing is outrageous. Wham. Whoosh.
Avatar 12:21pm Wolfgang:

Oh, she gets compared to McCoy all the time, RevRabb. Totally fair - especially on these 70's records. But she just kept on developing and finding great people to collab with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Like wow immediately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm spodiodi:

aloha, Stork, and Stork Club Flies!
Avatar 12:24pm Wolfgang:

spodi!! Up front with ye!!
Avatar 12:27pm Wolfgang:

Yeah, Clint Houston alone is worth the price of admission. What a monster bassist he was - and he paired (and trioed, and quartetted) often with Joanne.
Avatar 12:31pm Wolfgang:

Houston is about to take off!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Jeff Golick:

This is my maiden voyage on the good ship Brackeen. Thanks so much for the horizon extension, @Stork.
Avatar 12:33pm Wolfgang:

This one's been brewing for a while Jeff. But in the process of putting this together, I am now totally smitten. SMITTEN, I tells ya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm coelacanth∅:

good afternoon Wolfgang and storklings
Avatar 12:34pm Wolfgang:

coelacanth∅: hail to thee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Linda Lee:

this is luscious!!
just fabulous.
Avatar 12:39pm Wolfgang:

Linda Lee made me smile again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Linda Lee:

:-)
& once again i'm too distracted by what i'm hearing to do anything but listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Linda Lee:

this will not end well. :-D
Avatar 12:41pm Wolfgang:

I hope you're not piloting a passenger jet as we speak, Linda Lee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Linda Lee:

hahah!!! wish i was, actually. i'd be on the move rather than stuck in place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Linda Lee:

but no, i'm sitting in a former barn in the catskill mountains, charged with emptying it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Linda Lee:

.. even though i'm not sure why.
Avatar 12:47pm Wolfgang:

In that case, let's hope some careless commercial pilot doesn't get distracted by Joanne's genius and come crashing into any former barns. I hope it's at least lovely there - summer in the Catskills sounds nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Linda Lee:

thanks Wolfgang. we are on a flight path, too, thouigh i don't believe the regional airport is running as many flights at all as they did this winter. i'm more likely to have hail..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Linda Lee:

it is lovely here. you wouldn't know anything's changed from a year ago, aside of normal natural changes. sun's out, birds sing, breezes blow, people sail down the road on bikes normally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Linda Lee:

i'm pleased to see their faces & hear them talking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Linda Lee:

i'm with you, Joanne! i chose getting out into life instead of extended schooling as well. left to living on our own terms, without confusion, we seem to do fine.
  12:58pm Granny:

well, the reboot seems to be more of an ordeal than i thought, so. I'm popping in on my mobile gadget to say howdy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Linda Lee:

hi love. so sorry!
  1:00pm Granny:

put it on the archives pile! it sounds phenomenal, from what i can pick up!
Avatar 1:00pm Wolfgang:

Granny! Hiya! Set yourself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I was spaced out so I just walked onto Art Blakey's bandstand & took over the piano. Gotcha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm doctorjazz:

Hi, Stork Clubbers (and Storky). Sitting, sweating, been loading up my car to move my daughter out of Manhattan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Linda Lee:

*so* good hearing this story! straight ahead!!
Avatar 1:04pm Wolfgang:

DrJ! Where's she moving to?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm doctorjazz:

Back home in Joisey. (She's actually been there since March, just giving up her sublet, silly to keep paying for it).
Avatar 1:07pm Wolfgang:

Yup. Happens to me alla time, RevRabb. Joanne and me we just roll that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Absolutely that always ends well.
Avatar 1:08pm Wolfgang:

Ahh, Joisey - me old Kentucky home! Wait, no... gimme a minute...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Linda Lee:

you all might not realize how little there is to lose when you're already raising four kids alone. the only thing standing in the way of doing what you wish is the possibility of prison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Linda Lee:

gosh, it is nice to have parents. i forget.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Linda Lee:

sure could use a dad with a car & a strong back right now!
Avatar 1:13pm Wolfgang:

here's a great interview/in-studio performance - solo and with Marian McPartland.
www.youtube.com...
--Marian McPartland is way spacier than Joanne - and it's fun. Joanne sez to her at one point: "You're a real character, Marian." And MM answers, "Yes, I guess I am!"
  1:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Enjoying the proceedings! Sitting on the porch eating Chinese takeout leftovers in the warm breeze.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Linda Lee:

nice life ya got there, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Linda Lee:

@spodiodi
The Friday dance party shows are scheduled through the end of August, when the series will come to an end.
Avatar 2:10pm Wolfgang:

Spodi: I'd never say never, but that is one daunting job, and I stand (okay, sit, mostly) in awe of the many Great Ones who have gone before. It is an intriguing idea, though.

  2:34pm Dean:

Can't recall if I've mentioned that there was until earlier this year a Stork Club in Oakland, a real dive of a dive, with a display of dozens of Barbie dolls behind the bar. Heard Flying Luttenbachers there.

Avatar 2:41pm Wolfgang:

  2:44pm Dean:

Weasel Walter was more upset than usual, if I recall correctly. Had to restart a tune or two. Better show was at the Hemlock with...Mick Barr?...Ruins? WW was on fire, as usual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Jeff Golick:

I once stood behind Weasel Walter in line at the Post Office; he was clearly mailing orders out. I did not have the gumption to say, "Hey, Mr. Walter? Big fan."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm chresti:

That sounds delicious, Granny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Jeff Golick:

Most of my life regrets involve not talking to people I wish I'd talked to. Let that be a lesson to you young'uns.

  2:49pm Dean:

Weasel Walter at the PO! Reminds me of seeing Judith Butler at the supermarket. I ran into Scott Amendola on the BART platform in SF a few months ago, and I *did* go up to him and say, "Hey, Mr. Amendola? Big fan." We chatted all the way back on the ride to the East Bay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm chresti:

I want to be freezing in SF.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Jeff Golick:

No regrets in listening to this show, tho. A pure gem, it is, @Stork.
Avatar 2:53pm Wolfgang:

To the swank clientele assembled tonight: this bounty of Joanne shall o'erflow the banks of a three hour Drummer Stream show. We are going WAY the hell over tonight/today. There's another whole set behind this one, and it's a doozy, as the ancient Romans would say. I hope you can dally the dappled, drowsy day away with ol' Storkypants.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm chresti:

My regrets are like Jeff Gs, Missed talking opportunities due to shyness on my part, when I was younger, smiling and waving was the best I could do, maybe nodding.
  2:55pm Dean:

Doozyus est!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm spodiodi:

cool, Dean. i know the feeling, Jeff
chresti, i'll be more quiet about it :-B life is not bad
Avatar 2:57pm Wolfgang:

High praise from JeffG. Gonna be kinda insufferable for a few days now. Gonna wear shades indoors, and everything.
  2:59pm Granny:

thanks, Wolfgang and Storksters!
Avatar 3:00pm Wolfgang:

...aaaaannnnnddd, we are in OT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:00pm chresti:

Bring on the doozy!
Avatar 3:00pm Wolfgang:

Granny thanks for the blessings... see ya next?
  3:00pm Dean:

I had listened earlier that day, or maybe a day or two prior, to a 1999 Paul Plimley Trio CD on which Amendola had drummed (Lisle Ellis on bass). I had to mention as much to him, at which point he tried to recollect the circumstances of its recording more than 20 years prior.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Stork!
Avatar 3:04pm Wolfgang:

Be well, Doc. We'll be up for a while if ya wanna circle back.
  3:05pm Dean:

The cover of this album and of another of Brackeen's, Keyed In, would lead one to believe it were on the CTI label. Same tightly framed close-up photograph. And lo, the designer for Tappan Zee/Columbia was Paula Scher, who designed for CTI.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm chresti:

Franco was talking on the phone with a friend in Montana, she said all these goons from other states are flooding into Montana without masks on.
Avatar 3:06pm Wolfgang:

Ha! Another choice tidbit from Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm spodiodi:

such a comfy seat, and way up front. here for the cheer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I'll have to tell the Derby Rawkers on the main stream or whomever I was hanging with the Jazzbos & the rest is their problem. You just let it roll out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm spodiodi:

chresti, i detest goons
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm doctorjazz:

Hanging here in OT, just never sure how long OT will go for.
  3:08pm Doug Schulkind:

Humor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:10pm doctorjazz:

Have to say, Brakeen has been more of a name I knew than music I've checked out. Glad to have this opportunity to finally get to hear a good sample of her fine work.
  3:10pm Doug Schulkind:

She was born Joanne Grogan. Could she possibly be related to our own Larry Grogan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm spodiodi:

who knows!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm Linda Lee:

surfacing from the chores a bit. wow.. the sounds.. so dynamic!!
Avatar 3:11pm Wolfgang:

@DrJ: we got about an hour or so left, I'd say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:12pm Linda Lee:

this news thrills me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm Linda Lee:

what's your time there, Wolfgang? 9ish?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm doctorjazz:

Wow, that's a long OT...(good for me, though, late arrival).
Avatar 3:15pm Wolfgang:

Welcome back, Linda Lee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm doctorjazz:

Must be flugelhorn on this Hubbard, no?
Avatar 3:16pm Wolfgang:

Yeah, 9:15 pm Linda Lee.
Avatar 3:16pm Wolfgang:

i think you're gonna kinda like the last set, Doc.
Avatar 3:17pm Wolfgang:

I always have a hard time telling flugel from trumpet, but this does sound mellow-flugey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm doctorjazz:

Just a tad "darker" than trumpet too my ears...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Linda Lee:

a nice end to the evening then!! bravo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm Linda Lee:

whose 'summer in the city' is that?
  3:20pm Dean:

Freddie McCoy? See the second entry on today's playlist, LL.

thanks dear!
  3:28pm Dean:

...I'm guessing.
  3:29pm Irene:

Thanks for the shout out! I will indeed be on tomorrow with Peter assisting. Great Joanne Brackeen tribute, btw.
Avatar 3:30pm Wolfgang:

Yup, that's vibe-player Freddie McCoy. He wasnt really in her league, but she characteristically talks about him with great warmth, as being a great, funny guy. She was coming off a long baby-break when she recorded the record in '67. Groovy stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm doctorjazz:

These Maybeck Hall records (of which I have a few, but not enough) are great! (As is this My Foolish Heart).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm coelacanth∅:

bad tambourine playing will ruin any song; excellent tambourine playing can lift a good song to be a great song. often more important than the drums as far as keeping the track together.
why wouldn't a tambourine player get credit?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Linda Lee:

@Wolfgang ~ yes it is.
Avatar 3:35pm Wolfgang:

Wow, thanks, Irene. Peter's swell for helping you - being your hands while you recover. His obit of Annie Ross in the NYT was excellent, everybody. Check it out - i don't have the link handy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm coelacanth∅:

...by the way Wolfie i've enjoyed every bit of this program that i've heard, which is most of it.
  3:37pm Dean:

Indeed, they are, doctorjazz. I'm now at the point where when I see one, I have to think hard about whether or not I already have it. Occurs to me I should inventory them and add them to a t-i-n-y piece of paper I keep in my wallet on which I list in m-i-c-r-o-s-c-o-p-i-c type 1) Hyperion Schubert lieder series issues I need; 2) Naxos Haydn string quartet series issues I have; and 3) Albion Records Vaughan Williams issues I have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm doctorjazz:

I'll post the link...

  3:39pm Dean:

I also have a duet recording of Satoko Fujii and Myra Melford at Maybeck--not on Concord, obvs--a show I attended.
Avatar 3:40pm Wolfgang:

Thanks, coelacanth∅:. To be honest, so have I. This is one of my faves, if I may so boast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm doctorjazz:

@Dean, this might help

Avatar 3:41pm Wolfgang:

Thanks, DrJ! Great writing by Peter, as ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm doctorjazz:

That Toots was purty, got to see him once.
  3:42pm Dean:

It helps a lot! Thank you. Now I can proceed alphabetically across the shelves and check off the holdings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Linda Lee:

this rocks!
  3:43pm Dean:

btw, Concord has a Concord Duo series, at least one release of which was recorded at Maybeck, Alan Broadbent with sax player Gary Foster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm Linda Lee:

(yes, we should have an edit feature on the board so we can clarify what the hell we're tallkin about. solar.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm doctorjazz:

(I'd be redoing 3/4 of my posts...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm doctorjazz:

I remember the duo series, not sure if I have many (think just 1 or 2).
Avatar 3:47pm duke:

Gotta go. Great show, thanks Stork.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm doctorjazz:

We are getting close to an hour, Thanks, Stork, GREAT TRIBUTE!
Avatar 3:53pm Wolfgang:

Go well, duke. Next week, samt ime
Avatar 3:54pm Wolfgang:

Thanks, Doc. A few beauts left for anyone still hangin.'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Linda Lee:

oh yes. too sweet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Linda Lee:

perfect for sorting manuscripts & vintage pornographic love notes..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Linda Lee:

definitely coming back to this beautiful show in the archives! you betcha!
Avatar 3:55pm Wolfgang:

Talk about arousing curiosity, Linda Lee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Linda Lee:

hah! just a box of papers belonging to a beloved one who's passed on. saved & collected. what does one do with these things?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm chresti:

Wolfie, given all the OT hours you've clocked in, I think you have the muscle to take on the Drummer Discotheque on Saturdays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

....still tuned in with breaks to doomscroll on fb & such...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Linda Lee:

listen to that delicious tone..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm chresti:

Thank you, Stork, for the lovely Brackeen Birthday party, also a great learning experience for my ears!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Linda Lee:

thank you so much, kind Sir! fabulous.
Avatar 4:01pm Wolfgang:

Thanks, chresti. It's hard keeping bootys aloft for 4 hours though, But I should try sometime - maybe if they bring the disco back. It ends at the end of August.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Linda Lee:

i cannot imagine how people who make their living traveling place to place to play music can withstand this new economic paradigm. there's just no place for them in it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Linda Lee:

*this* is a fine, fine old favorite. just listen to that..
Avatar 4:04pm Wolfgang:

Most wonderful guests - such a sweet one tonight in the Club. Joanne is a revelation to many, a simple joy to those who already know her. So glad you were all aboard for this one. Mwah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm Linda Lee:

*** mwah! ***
  4:07pm Irene:

Thanks for this birthday celebration, Herr Wolfgang! I don't know Joanne's music well enough but you've given us a lot to explore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm doctorjazz:

LL, I believe they're having a really difficult time. Some have resorted to streaming, but that's iffy at best. I mentioned earlier I was moving my daughter's stuff out of her Manhattan apartment-she's an actor. but auditions, classes, everything she was there for has stopped.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Haven't even said the obvious that here's a female pianist whose not just a stylist or also a singer (none of whom I can think of who aren't essential btw) - but who absolutely rips both technically & energy-wise - & had awesome range as well. I hope that isn't patronizing ' I intend the opposite like - so there! Of course there are other female pianist who are significant - so I shouldn't overstate it....just think she kicks total ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm doctorjazz:

Thanks again for the fine tribute, Wolfgang, really dug it!
Avatar 4:09pm Wolfgang:

Linda Lee - Irene, DrJ, chresti, revrabb, and all who still twirl upon the dance floor - you're all wind under me storky-wings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm doctorjazz:

Rev, her chops and individual approach are indeed 1st rate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yes Thanks! For the overtime too! Most generous to let us hang in the Club past closing.
Avatar 4:10pm Wolfgang:

and she's still playing and teaching, RevRabb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm spodiodi:

thanks, Stork! great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Linda Lee:

Dr J ~ so disheartening. the only recourse we have, i think, is to refuse to normalize this horrific 'new normal'. whatever happens, we must not forget what actuality it like & we mustn't shut down our will to return to what we are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah I meant has not had but autoincorrect! ...& typos.
  4:12pm Dean:

Another female wunderkind pianist, a decade Joanne's junior, is Jessica Williams. Alas, I don't think she can perform any longer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm doctorjazz:

(Garnet for 2 writer's credit for Moanin', but it's actually Bobby Timmons. FYI.)
  4:12pm Doug Schulkind:

She is as good as it gets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Linda Lee:

what actuality *is* like.. damn robot fingers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm doctorjazz:

(Should have read..."Garnett received writer's credit for Moanin'..."
Avatar 4:15pm Wolfgang:

Dean - oh, no!! I LOVE her!! Would love to do a show on her, too!! Jessica Williams - another epiphany waiting ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm doctorjazz:

A current female pianist I like (if it's not sexist to pull them out this way) is Kris Davis.
  4:16pm Dean:

I had the good fortune to hear Jessica in SF not too long before 2012, when she apparently had a surgical procedure that compromised her playing. A joy.
  4:17pm geezerette:

WOW!!!
Avatar 4:21pm Wolfgang:

geezerette! so glad you're with!!
Avatar 4:21pm WR:

But byye
  4:22pm Dean:

Another well-spent day begun with Jeff G. and on through Storck.
Avatar 4:22pm Jeff Moore:

Thanks, Stork!
Avatar 4:22pm Wolfgang:

Wr, Dean Jeff - C Yuz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Stork! and a fine tribute to a fine person it be.

take care
