A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Heidee--I have yet to go, my brother has gone, and my Dad got to go before he died--he was from there originally. I DO have a passport and citizenship, so if things REALLY go to shit out here I CAN get back if I can get the scratch to quarantine for a few weeks per rules. Frankly, the idea of running away to the converted farmhouse on my Dad's childhood property--a small clearing-farm adjacent to fields of flowers and a birch-surrounded lake--sounds pretty damn nice right about now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am

Not many mask songs out there, but I think of Robyn Hitchcock's "Cynthia Mask" and then there was that Andy Summers/Robert Fripp LP, "I Advance Masked." And the Theme from M.A.S.K., natch.

You carry all the ingredients to turn your life into a nightmare – Don’t mix them!

You have all the genius to build a swing in your backyard for God.

That sounds like a hell of a lot more fun.
Let’s start laughing, drawing blueprints, gathering our talented friends.
I will help you with my divine lyre and drum.

Hafiz will sing a thousand words
You can take into your hands,
Like golden saws, silver hammers,
Polished teakwood, strong silk rope.

You carry all the ingredients to turn our existence into joy,
Mix them, mix them!

Has anyone made use of samples from the original film "The Mask"? The b/w 3-D horror film from 1961? The big gimmick was, whenever a 3-D effect was coming up, the audience was prompted to get the glasses on with the booming command PUT THE MASK ON NOW....

seems timely to plunder, no?

The NYCmesh.ner was interesting show on Techtonic... I looked into it
1) Roof install permission. PITA
2) Is a hard wired hookup from antenna to user - even more difficult to get permission in apartment bldg.
3) The internet connection is via the Google street spy kiosks (NYNet) if no NYCMesh antenna is nearby (Mark missed this, is buried deep in NYCMesh website)
4) Yes, they look like a "cooperative", have flex pricing, but the reality is that almost all the install is cost shifted. (Uber business model).
5) I hate the cable cos deeply. The only viable solution is gov't supplied hook up for all... As in Europe, Asia ... ie civilized nations ....

@Handy: We've been debating whether to travel to Michigan. We're hoping to do some socially-distant camping en famille.

trouble...don't you know that law and order are much more important than mental health or social welfare?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am
Trouble:

i know you are being sassy @prudy, but the two are so intrinsically connected, it's shocking that people don't see it. What i suppose they see is the power of police unions to threatened ruin if police are not hired in great numbers. Mental health workers need a strong union like the one that the cops have...

The first headline at news aggregator I read, and my first thought was, "please don't be the sherriff from county where I I grew up."

Difficulty: I grew up in suburban FL, so the answer is naturally, "yes".

@3M, alarm clock radios are notoriously crappy. I get good reception on every radio except for the alarm clock radios. Sorry I don't mean to radio-shame you. The shame is only for the corner-cutting manufacturers!

So... considering that the police union appears to be the only "union" that does not require immediate busting... Why is there no push to privatize the police? Or is there, and once again I'm woefully naive?

Yeah, Handy! Download archives for the road! Good travels!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am
Ike:

Also admittedly, Astoria (was it Astoria?) is trickier than Sunset Park. Down here, we don't have a bunch of buildings in the way of 91.1, and 91.9 is pretty tiny and might not be strong enough to reach all of Astoria from Times Square.

@HandyHaversack, Just to let you know that Vermont's infection rate is extremely low, and people are very well behaved in the supermarkets and shops, especially the co-ops. Every step out of the house is a risk, but you'll be safer in VT than in most places in the country
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am
Handy Haversack:

@ami ad, we have all the CDs from the last couple of Bandcamp Fridays and Juneteenth for the car! We don't have smart phones, but the car has a CD player.

Def. bringing our bleach solution and spray bottle and sanitizing stations.

Thanks, Listener Gregory, that's def. the impression I have! We just figured we'd minimize it. Hoping to maybe even get takeout in Brattleboro our last night up there!

Thanks, pals! I am absurdly nervous. Have not done anything in so long that I guess I'm just not used to the idea anymore!

trouble...agreed..this country has never dealt with mental health issues..that is evolving but there is never enough funding for any social welfare program...we're all supposed to take care of it as "individuals". The one positive thing I see is that cops are actually now being charged and indicted for murder...this never would have happened even five years ago..

@Trouble, Handy Haversack That sense of fear coupled with regret started popping up when I ventured in a small store, CVS, and somewhat, a nearby Whole Foods. I do order takeout, at times. Wonder when it will at least subside. I used to commute, teach in a large community college, and generally loved being out and about.

You know what's weird, though, Deborah and Trouble? The one thing we have done where I did *not* get that sort of pre-dread was going to marches and protests. Helps that it's the only time 90+ percent of the people are actually wearing masks, I guess.
