A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

This Bobby Hutcherson makes me think of what the Arkestra might have sounded like if Sun Ra had chosen a more "commercial" path.

Sounds great, Trouble. Looking forward to the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Trouble:

here is an excellent short talk with titus kaphar, the artist on top of today's accuplaylist. he mentions the teddy roosevelt statue the natural history museum has finally decided to remove from it's front steps.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Trouble:

thanks @jim the poet! glad to have you here
Avatar 9:21am TDK60:

I urge no deletion whatsoever. (my 2 cents) Why? Because... I think I hear the Chimes of Freedom ringing in the near distance.
Avatar 9:26am TDK60:

Bonjour Trouble. I work near the Museum of Natural History in NYC and for years have wondered why that statue is there. But I've also taken solace in the fact that nearby is a statue of comrade Frederick Douglass.
Avatar 9:27am Linda Lee:

hi! thank you so much for the morning's sounds, Trouble! (so nice to give thanks where appropriate. for the first 50 years of radio fandom i couldn't!)

Trouble, thank you for the Ted talk link. The Titus Kaphar painting is amazing. I was not familiar with his work. Also, as always thank you for the music!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Irene Trudel:

Nice to hear Bobby Hutcherson this morning, Trouble. He was an amazing vibes player and a a lovely human being. When my father-in-law Orrin Keepnews passed, Bobby and his wife Rosemary came to the viewing at the house. He told story after story about him, some sweet and some really funny to lift our spirits.

Got a 2-month house guest arriving here on the east coast of Canada from the west coast, trying to figure out how she can quarantine safely for the requisite 2 weeks while I continue to live and work here. I had read that air travel is actually now only a medium risk activity because of all the official precautions, but just heard from her that no one in the airports is even wearing masks, including staff!
Avatar 9:52am Jeezuseffinchrist:

@Pale Son, that's terrifying. No masks at all?????
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Trouble:

whoa! that's crazy @pale son
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Pale Son:

No, and I guess they're really not enforcing any kind of distancing or other safety etiquette between passengers.
Avatar 9:53am TDK60:

Hi Linda. Despite any problems here the last months, I'm relatively fine; in a good mood, today at least.
Avatar 9:56am Listener Gregory:

@Pale Son, we seem determined to make this outbreak as terrible as possible.
Avatar 9:57am Linda Lee:

beautiful. i'm glad to hear it. today is all we have! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Pale Son:

Agreed, Gregory. I think everyone's getting really lax all of a sudden in Canada because most places haven't had any new cases in two weeks now. But that's because we've been so cautious till now. Airports especially should still be taking this seriously!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am YETI BOB:

@PaleSon: I can't imagine going anywhere near an airport or an airplane. Any traveling I do will be road trip, or train (sleeper car).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Pale Son:

I'm with you, Yeti. This is unfortunately a medically necessary trip that would take three or four days by car or train.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Handy Haversack:

That's terrible, @adampysche! Will send get-well wishes.

@Pale Son: after decades of more and more humiliating treatment when we fly, NOW the airlines are letting people follow their bliss, maskwise?

DOOM. DOOM. DOOM.
Avatar 10:00am Snoochienucci:

such a great show so far. and we get 2 more hours too!
Avatar 10:02am pantz:

I wonder if there will be another Baby Boom, due to everyone being stuck indoors for so long and...er...having nothing better to do. ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am YETI BOB:

@PaleSon: Sorry, I didn't mean to imply any disapproval or criticism of you or your house guest. Just expressing my opinion - I hated flying even before all of this. But if it were an emergency I'd board that plane! Hope all works out well for you and your guest.
Avatar 10:04am Blues Mandinga:

Ea!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Trouble:

thanks@snoochi...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am YETI BOB:

Theaster Gates is awesome, I've seen some of his projects in Chicago. I'm less familiar with the other two artists. Thanks for posting these articles, Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am melinda:

Ah, Arthur Russell! I should listen to him more, been in a musical rut lately and listening to more public affairs talk than music.
Avatar 10:09am Itzall Hear:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Trouble:

he is perfect@ abbie from mars...
Avatar 10:19am Listener Gregory:

What is a good *introductory* Arthur Russell record?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Abbie from Mars:

I started with World of Echo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Passaic River Blues:

@Listener Gregory: I'd say "World of Echo."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Handy Haversack:

Meeting now, but a useful one -- hope to be back for the end!
Avatar 10:29am Listener Gregory:

Thanks, @Abbie and @Passaic! I will try it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am redbee:

When that Russell song came on, I realized I'd been conflating Arto Lindsay and Arthur Russell. Like, thought they were the same person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am mariano:

Hey Trouble, crew, moderns.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Abbie from Mars:

@Gregory enjoy!!
@redbee omg. Arto is awesome
Avatar 10:37am Listener Gregory:

@redbee, I thought for a long time he was Arthur Brown of "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown," who had a novelty hit, "Fire" back in 1968.
Avatar 10:38am Listener Gregory:

[And Arto Lindsay IS awesome. Allow me to plug his latest album "Largest Afternoon," with Joe McPhee & Ken Vandermark. It's a free skronk-jazz thing, not songwriting.]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Abbie from Mars:

Stacked collab!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am redbee:

I will investigate, thanks @Listener Gregory!
Avatar 10:41am Erella:

Avatar 11:12am βrian:

And do you remember when pretty much every school had a librarian?
  11:13am Lucky:

Do we have to fire anyone? Can't we just stop buying all this cutting edge military gear? I hear it's expensive. Why would they need that stuff? Unless, of course they were an occupying army.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am WoodsOfNH:

@Trouble when I first heard about it (being used as an example in this 'defund' era), it did make me wonder if that sort of thing had happened anywhere else. I hope it does, and this time around definitely for altruistic reasons.

Ashes to Ashes vibe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am mariano:

Karol: usually if I don't feel like engaging in political discussion/debate I simply skip over/don't respond to any comments of that nature, since I'm not obliged to read or respond if I don't want to. Simple and effective.
Avatar 11:25am SHAGALOV:

Oh Katya Shilonosova on WFMU thats gr8!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Mick:

Thanks much for the mix of music and commentary -- we don't get through this by *not* talking about it, and using some imagination
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Pale Son:

Ignoring politics is a political decision that we can only make from a position of privilege.
Avatar 11:29am βrian:

Privilege or torpor.
  11:30am Karol Marks:

@mariano My Comment is not in relation to comments. I opened them only to voice my anger at the station that I love for the music it is playing. I always new DJs here have a certain political views, but recently they express them too much to mine liking. It is painful.
Avatar 11:30am Jeezuseffinchrist:

I thought this was Helado Negro!! love him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Passaic River Blues:

@Karol: turn off your radio. Problem solved.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am WoodsOfNH:

You know what else is painful, people needlessly dying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Ike:

@Pale Son, hell yeah, damn straight.

@Karol people are tired of getting murdered in the street by the people who are supposed to serve and protect them. They're being denied their due process. It's unconstitutional. So it's understandable the DJs feel the need to speak out.
Avatar 11:33am dougseidel:

thank you for this show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Adrian in London:

@Karol Trouble talks about politics all the time on her show, always has done. Telling a woman to shut up for expressing an opinion isn't the greatest look, you know.
Avatar 11:34am dougseidel:

thanks you for speaking!
Avatar 11:35am βrian:

All meetings should be text-only. This I believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Trouble:

@karol marks: the whole idea of WFMU is that we are people, not algorithms. It is not surprising to hear that people have opinions, especially people who volunteer their time to dj and share their love of music. What we are doing at WFMU goes against the corporate idea of making money, therefore the opinions you are hearing reflect those ideals. If that makes you uncomfortable then you have other options. One of those is to ask yourself why these sentiments make you uncomfortable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Hughie Considine:

@Karol, there are many archived shows recorded before the pandemic. You can listen to them and not have to endure people talking about the tragedy we are all living through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Handy Haversack:

Hello! I am back! Please make me uncomfortable, Trouble!
Avatar 11:39am Listener Gregory:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am mariano:

Karol: I'm sorry you find it so painful (kind of an extreme term though imho). But it isn't like you're being subjected to some Clockwork Orange-style experiment in which you're being forced to listen.
  11:44am Lucky:

@Stefan - Really? Where di you hear that? That's an astounding idea...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am YETI BOB:

Digging this Suzanne Ciani track! She did a really interesting collaboration with Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, part of the excellent "Freakways" series. There's another really cool one in the same series, with Ariel Kalma and Rob A.A. Lowe. Worth checking out if you like this kind of introspective electronica.

There is a sort of unwritten rule to avoid political stuff on WFMU which seems fair. But at certain times of great change, it's hard to avoid. Sometimes I go to WFMU shows for apolitical comfort. Other times the comments board gets "political" and so do I, as earlier in this show. I'm very political, so I usually try to suss out the mood of the show happening. No need for folks to always agree. But it shouldn't be surprising that a station that is dedicated to freedom in music, has disc jockeys and listeners who also lean toward freedom in most other areas too.

Lixiviation=the process of separating soluble from insoluble substances by dissolving the former in water or another solvent.
I feel this is relevant.

@TDK60: I don't believe there's any such rule, written or not. FMU DJ's talk about whatever they want - the only rules are the FCC regulations, as far as I can tell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am YETI BOB:

I mean, this is the station that used to air Dave Emory!

@TDK60 maybe that's an unwritten rule for all regular folks, too? perhaps there are too few real political discussions in America. and by real, I mean substantive discussions of issues as opposed to politics as a version of team sports.
Avatar 11:50am TDK60:

Yeti, maybe it would be more clear to say, some DJs often urge no politics, usually. These are unusual times, thankfully..

The FCC goes out the window on the Drummer Stream. Heh. Pretty salty sometimes.

Trouble: Please continue saying what you say and doing what you do. All of us need to do what we can.
Avatar 11:51am TDK60:

You're right Lucky, there are too few political discussions by us regular people in this country, until recently.

Thanks for a great show, trouble.

i also think that while everyone may not agree with everyone else, that wfmu tends to be a group of free thinking people (or at least we like to think we are) and it is sometimes good to just get your points out and vocalize them, whether you are a DJ or listener. Discussion is always a good thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Trouble:

the fcc prohibition for swearing only applies to over the radio airwaves, not the streams@brian. thanks for your support @dougseidel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am YETI BOB:

@TDK60: OK. I don't listen to every show on WFMU, but I haven't encountered any "let's not talk about politics" in any of the programs I listen to regularly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Trouble:

merci@adrian! glad you are here

Loved what I was here for, Trouble! Thanks so much! And thanks to your Skeleton!

Be well, all!

If I had a WFMU show, I would revise my archives to put in swearing after the show aired.
That is how I would stick it to the man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Trouble. Always a pleasure.

This has been a stellar show! Really sorry to've missed almost an hour of it.

Have to run, Trouble. Thanks!

Good morning everyone, especially Trouble and her menagerie of birds. Birds were quiet in the forest from which I have just returned, but the squirrels were hosting drive-time talk and the coyotes did the late-nite Art Bell shift.

Persian version of the Allah-La’s. Or, I see where Persian pop/rock has influenced Allah-La’s. Cool tune. Great show. Thanks!
