Avatar 5:16pm Franco Twinkie:

Chresti shared a space with Bong Load Records long ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Franco, "...and when I got home from the show, the real trouble started!"
  5:20pm wfmu listener phillip:

happy fathers day Therese. I hope you did something for yours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm Mr. Pumpy:

Handy, I missed juggling with death today! I hope you enjoyed not having to be on duty.
  5:20pm wendy del formaggio:

Yay disco!
Avatar 5:21pm Joe B:

  5:22pm wfmu listener phillip:

hope many of you did something for your dad's alive or dead this fathers day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm Fuzzy:

Beck song and this GRC song have very little bass...hmm...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm mariano:

Hey, is the sound coming through kind of treble-y or is something wrong with my speakers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:23pm mariano:

Well, that answers that, Fuzzy ;)
  5:25pm wfmu listener phillip:

wow a very disco theme start to your show.nice
Avatar 5:25pm Franco Twinkie:

Mr. Pumpy, last night after that bit of candor, I was thinking about laying in my yet to be new girl friends bed thinking about what kind of mess I had made for myself while I stared at a yellow thumb tack stuck in the wall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm Mr. Pumpy:

Yeah, I kept waiting for the bass to kick in as if it was a studio thang done for effect, but there is some low end missing here. I'm sure Therese is aware and/or on it.
Avatar 5:27pm Hubig Pie:

My speaker sounds kinda cheap
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Mr. Pumpy:

Franco, those are the details...priceless!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm mariano:

No, Mr. Pumpy. I'm being robbed of every minute of bass that I deserve!
  5:27pm CC:

A little bass never hurts...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm mariano:

Welp, never mind then :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm ParUbi:

It does sound tinny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm Stanley:

Ooo, the sound is back!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm Mr. Pumpy:

mariano, you must file Bass Inactivity form 3B-IDHNB54, in triplicate, with the United Nations of Funkosity. Then wait 3-5 months for nothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm Andrew_in_WI:

Mellow Gold was the first CD I ever bought... it was pre-scientology Beck so I'm not ashamed.
  5:31pm Bill D:

Love Therese on Sunday afternoons , especially spring and summer ones.
  5:32pm johnzo:

my week has been FUGGIN CRAZY. I finally know someone who got the virus... one of my co-workers. His symptoms are very mild. I met another guy who's 28 yo neighbor died tho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm mariano:

It's as I feared, Mr. P. In my day you could get it done with a simple 27B-6.
  5:34pm johnzo:

you need advice on seasoning the pan? feel like you put oil on it and put it in th oven on a low heat but Ive never done it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Therese:

Thanks, @johnzo. I've got to get the surface rust off before I can think about re-seasoning the pan...
  5:36pm wendy del formaggio:

Therese: wash pan with soapy water, rinse well, dry well (in the oven is best). When it’s cool, scrub the fuck outta the pan with double-zero steel wool and soy or canola oil or rendered bacon grease if ya got it. Don’t use olive oil, too unstable. When rust is gone, rinse, dry again. Heat over high on the stovetop and rub the inside with more oil / bacon fat and paper towels til it’s coated. Keep rubbing w fresh paper towels til oil sheen is gone. Use tongs so you don’t burn your hands.
  5:37pm MelindafromAustin:

To restore cast iron : soak in a lye solution using powdered lye & water. Cover in durable plastic container with a lid. Submerge for a week & a half. Change solution and let soak longer if needed. Next: scrub with hard wire. Then clean thoroughly before seasoning to full restoration.
Avatar 5:37pm Sketch:

Check out Cowboy Kent on YouTube. He's a great resource for cast iron cooking. Really fun guy too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm mariano:

Wait, the bass is gone again.
  5:38pm MelindafromAustin:

Be careful with lye.
Avatar 5:38pm Hubig Pie:

Lo-fi is such a drag
Avatar 5:39pm Franco Twinkie:

Andrew, When Chresti was in the same building as Bong Load, one of the guys who worked there gave me a single - Steve Threw Up, where Beck itemizes every thing that was vomited off a ride at the fun fair after to much LSD. To this day, my favorite song by Beck.
  5:39pm Barking Dog:

cast iron pan:
1. put it in a self cleaning oven cycle
2. sandblasting is quicker and you start with an as new pan
  5:39pm MelindafromAustin:

I worked at a vintage cooking store & this is how we restored severely damaged antique cast iron to new.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm Handy Haversack:

Franco, I was thinking about how nice it was that you shared those stories and how cool it was you felt comfortable sharing with us. A couple of special shows last night!

Mr. P, it felt weird to have nothing to do. I was so exhausted, though, that it was maybe for the best? I got some reading done in a new RPG book I am really excited for. Watched a little TV. Stared at the dog.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Therese:

@Melinda, I will try Wendy and Sketch's suggestions before I move on to lye. I'm kind of clumsy and tend to spill things...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Mr. Pumpy:

Elusive bass...where art thou?
Avatar 5:40pm Denis:

Wonderful show as always Therese! But Are there technical issues today? Every other song sounds extremely tinny.
  5:40pm Julia F:

This is a solid advice on restoring cast iron. But you really should be looking for carbon steel when walking the streets. Carbon steel is the new cast iron https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-restore-a-rusty-cast-iron-skillet-cleaning-lessons-from-the-kitchn-203086
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm Andrew_in_WI:

@Franco That single sounds amazing
Avatar 5:41pm Sketch:

I just ate an absurd amount of tagliatelle and meatballs and I'm kind of cool with the lack of bass
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm Fuzzy:

Just pretend you're listening to an old transistor radio.
Avatar 5:42pm Franco Twinkie:

Thanks Handy, I just want to entertain you guys, and nothing is more entertaining than the truth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm Therese:

Hmm... don't know about the bass issues- everything's running through the same software and I haven't futzed with any settings...
Avatar 5:43pm Hubig Pie:

Mr. Young is bringing some bottom end now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Mr. Pumpy:

no futzing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:43pm Handy Haversack:

Word, Franco.

@Fuzzy, that game will go nicely with the pegu club I just mixed.
  5:44pm CC:

Just keep throwing a bunch of greasy stuff in your frying pan and make sure never to rinse it out too good!!!...simple!!...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Mr. Pumpy:

It's weird, it's as if their is a gate on the signal, and a certain dB level or frequency level cuts the bass frequencies. Something is going on, Therese. Not really a big deal...the show is rolling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm Mr. Pumpy:

It's also affecting my spelling!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Therese:

Ruth?! Scott?! Any ideas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Handy Haversack:

Use the DESTON tuning fork, M. P!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The radio gods are trying to compel Therese to play some Wing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm Mr. Pumpy:

Not the DESTON!
  5:47pm CC:

Everything sounds real good here!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:48pm Handy Haversack:

Wing could definitely groove with the DESTON!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm Mr. Pumpy:

I actually was fork-silly when we stumbled upon those. I would have rung for days had I been left to my own devices. I probably would have ended up in the tear of a space lizard or something similar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm chresti:

It's as if it switches to AM radio for a minute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm Scott Williams:

Betty brings the bass back!
  5:52pm CC:

Vote Democrat!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm chresti:

the sound, that is ^
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:55pm Handy Haversack:

Modulating our amplitude -- the cheek of it all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Mr. Pumpy:

Men's jackets required. Frequency modulation or non frequency modulation? Enjoy your meal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Mr. Pumpy:

Ghosts in da macheen
  5:59pm CC:

My ears so old I can never get enough of the high frequencies anyway!!!
  6:00pm Listener Robert:

I just looked up Jensen Beach, which was referred to by the other station at 5:30 coming in here on 90.1, and it's near Port St. Lucie, Fla. I used to get off on IDing DX like that during sporadic E skip conditions like around the solstice.
  6:01pm BH:

no offense to the B-52s but that bed music sounds like Weather Channel jazz music
  6:03pm Ball Hitch:

Great to be able to comment DJ Therese! Happy Fathe....erss.... Happy Holiday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Mr. Pumpy:

I've been to Jensen Beach many times over the years. My Grandmother lived in Stuart, FL in the Port St. Lucie area from the 80s until she passed about 15 years back. The name of the beach always struck me because I thought of Jensen speakers every time I heard it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Mr. Pumpy:

I did some solid surf casting there. Fish on!
  6:06pm CC:

My brother-in-law Ron used to sit in with jazz messengers back in the late 60s...
Avatar 6:06pm βrian:

Or Jazz Channel weather music, maybe?
  6:07pm Jett:

Ray Davies' birthday today also Greg Munford, Joey Molland and O. C. Smith.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Handy Haversack:

TOPT, pulling off the coups every week!

Memo to self: Do NOT make canoeing or poker plans next Saturday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:10pm Mr. Pumpy:

CC...that is insane! Blakey, especially during that era, is perhaps my favorite cat from that scene. Indestructible is my favorite bop record, hands down. 'Indestructible' is my go to album, 1964! Damn, I'd love to pick his brain. Very cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Stanley:

Handy! How are you?
  6:13pm CC:

I don't think Ron was ever in too many of the liner notes but he knew all them boys and loved playing with them every chance he got!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Mr. Pumpy:

Therese, my analysis earlier now seems off. It is not a frequency gate, so much as a scoop. It's odd; as if a certain range is scooped out. These are things I've achieved when messing around with my mixers and/or effects intentionally...and that's what it sounds like right now. It's there, but hollowed out. Still, ain't no thang, I'm just trying to help give you info from this side. Rock on!
  6:14pm CC:

Run passed away about 1983 God Rest his soul he taught me everything I know about jazz!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Mr. Pumpy:

CC...I'm sure. That was a bunch, a bunch, of top players that went through the Art Blakey School of Jazz back then. So cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Mr. Pumpy:

CC...I'm happy for you that you have that connection with him which lives on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Handy Haversack:

Stanley! Slainte! So good to see you!

I'm OK -- slept like crap last night but then also had the first day in a long time without scheduled stuff to deal with. Weird but good. Sitting in the sun now, grooving and listening to the sparrows.

How are you?!
  6:17pm CC:

I posted a few Endeavors that Ron did from back in the day on my YouTube page just look up Ron Ruff... family and friends folder...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Mr. Pumpy:

Handy, was it that one more whiskey, ad infinitum? I actually stayed up to around 4:30 myself...doing other things. I'm already overly stoked for next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Stanley:

Sunny day, walk round the cemetary highlight of the day. So not so bad,
I'm thinking of calling myself Donald Twain
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Therese, this Ivan brought this album by Lay Llamas to mind. It's a ride. If you haven't, give it a spin sometime. I think you may dig. layllamas.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 6:20pm βrian:

Oy, back to the upstairs office after two weeks off. I'd rather just sit out front and monitor the hummingbirds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Therese:

Thanks, @Mr. Pumpy- I will check it out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Handy Haversack:

Very James Bond, Stanley!

It does feel like I might be sitting IN the sun. We are approaching melt-the-British temps here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Mr. Pumpy:

Also a great vinyl pressing, and reasonably priced! I think I have the purple one. www.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

This is gettin' a little same-samey!...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bestest Album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Handy, I'm ashamed to say I left my pops and came home today in spite of FD and no HB. He is not into air conditioning...and I needed to cool the hell off! You know, being there are only two rivers between us. I admire your fortitude, hanging out there. I'm not big on AC, but I needed to cool the pipes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm Mr. Pumpy:

Forever Changes! Yes. Yes! YES! Great choice as well, Therese.
Avatar 6:29pm Franco Twinkie:

Arthur Lee - poet laurette of the street.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Stanley:

Best heard through a 1970's transistor radio made in Hong Kong.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

An Album both Baroque & Balanced.
It had the examples of PetSounds & Pepper already - but still...
  6:30pm CC:

Nothing wrong with this!!!...:)
Avatar 6:30pm Hubig Pie:

I got the AM sounds
I got the radio on
Roadrunner, roadrunner
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Mr. Pumpy:

Therese, are you doing an A/B thing between two sources? That may shed some light on the treble trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& for decades - no one much cared!...
  6:32pm CC:

My big speakers sound the same way that my car radio sounded in the 60!!!...hehehe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Mr. Pumpy:

CC, there is a frequency issue. I am not mentioning it for any reason other than to help Therese identify it. Still a great show. Mascis and Co. ar high end heavy at times, but this is not how it sounds...that's all. It's all good, we ain't going anywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33pm Fuzzy:

lttle transistor radio under my pillow 1973...
  6:33pm Ball Hitch:

BTW does anyone have a old Curt Cobain gutar layin' around that's just taking up space and unwanted?
Avatar 6:33pm Sean B.:

Hi. Thanks for the great music today Therese.
Swag For Life Member 6:33pm CleanShirt:

At risk of sounding hyperbolic, were some of these tracks recorded on a flip phone? I refuse to hop onto the flip-phones-as-vintage-hi-fi bandwagon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Stanley:

Fuzzy - right on. We had the same sound issues on the Emily L show last week but we turned them into killer sonic nostalgia trips
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Mr. Pumpy:

@CC...you were kidding. Ha! What gets lost in translation!
  6:34pm phat:

I believe Pseu had the same EQ issues last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

& then BASS :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Handy Haversack:

@Stanley: It's going to need its feet.
  6:35pm CC:

I got some bass here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Really is nostalgia - since they've done incredible things w/ tiny speakers...
Avatar 6:35pm βrian:

Too much bass and the sound gets fishy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Rev Rab...are you speaking about Love - Forever Changes?
  6:36pm johnk77:

@Mr.P: Yes.
Avatar 6:36pm Sean B.:

Sounds great on this end. Hi RevRab. Hope all is well my friend
  6:36pm CC:

I think the only way we'll know is if you play the 1969 version of cold turkey...the single???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Fuzzy:

Amazing bass from these Cambridge Soundworks Oontz Angle Ultra bluetooth speakers.

"Tin Man" or "I Can Help" would sound great with the transistor treatment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Handy Haversack:

@Stanley: the chicken. After the fuel and wood situation has been resolved.

Avatar 6:39pm Sean B.:

@CC Those original Apple pressings.are priceless. And I mean first pressing if you can find them. In mono.
Avatar 6:39pm Fishtown Mike:

Hope everyone is having a nice day! I literally jumped on the comment board, to make sure my subwoofer hadn't blown out while i was outside @ the grill. Great stuff Therese!
  6:40pm CC:

No... that's not very bassish!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Rev Rab...yes. A stellar and transitional album. I didn't realize anyone changed their minds about it. I always saw it as respected by a certain crowd of folks that are into tunes. Has it begun to trend after all these years?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ey-Up Sean B.
I've blown Tweeters & wondered if I'd blown an eardrum...but that's another story...
Avatar 6:40pm βrian:

@FM: Now I want to know what's on the grill...
Swag For Life Member 6:41pm CleanShirt:

Absolutely McGosh-darn righteous show, but something is afoot frequency-wise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Fuzzy:

Probably a cable not plugged in all the way on whatever device is playing now.

I mention it because I've had that happen on this end before and I was wondering what was wrong with the sound -- wasn't plugged in all the way!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Rev Rab, that is why I inquired as to whether there were A & B sources. Not always used in the digital realm, but it would help shed some light on where the problem is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Mr. Pumpy:

I have it on good authority that Dry Cleaning were going by Martinizing until litigation came their way. Bastards of industry!

Therese, s rub that cast iron pan with steel wool. Then wash, soap and water. Then season it. You should be good to go.

I could be mistaken, but isn't "Will To Love" from American Stars and Bars," not "On The Beach" ? You tell me @Therese

Avatar 6:50pm βrian:

Just scrub it well with steel wool, rinse and dry, then nail it with good old-fashioned oven cleaner.

After it sits for a bit, rinse and scrub well, then bake dry in the oven. Coat with flax oil or grapeseed oil, rub dry, and begin the ad infitum seasoning cycles.

@ Brain, just some brats and burgers. BTW, as a long time FMU listener, I can't tell you how many times I've wondered what the hell that horrible noise was, to realize I left the radio playing after a DJ change. Just this week I thought the dishwasher was dying, to find it was just some atonal hellscape Fabio was spinning.
Swag For Life Member 6:50pm CleanShirt:

@Brian - dry cleaning well dun
  6:50pm sugarwolf:

I like the ones I got from Neighborgoods. I’m going to wear them for an extended time this week, so we’ll see how it goes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Scott Williams:

Cheers to Fabio's atonal hellscapes!
  6:51pm Eric:

Put salad oil, about a tbs spoon or two, rub the pan well with it, inside and out, if you need to use something abrasive like steel wool, that would be ok. Wipe out with a clean cloth until dry, put on heat after rubbing pan again with about a tbs spoon of salad oil, cook on low flame for 10 or 20 minutes, oralternatively, put in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes, and it should be as good as new!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Mr. Pumpy:

Therese...my apologies! I forgot you live in JC, so you saying earlier you were coming from JC...I thought you were working in the studio at this point. I wouldn't have gone trying to help you identify the problem as much otherwise. Anyhow, knowledge is power, so hopefully we helped you identify a potential issue for the future.

Kramrellim, perhaps. A line-level input with no pre-amp sounds way more compromised, from my experience. However, something along those lines. Perhaps even internal...which would suck. Anyhow, Therese and Scott are on it. What's done is done for today, as far as I can imagine. Such is Covid DJing!

  7:10pm Jett:

Neil Young question is "Will To Love" is from American Stars and Bars, not On the Beach, am I correct?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Joe B...seriously! Talk about uncouth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10pm Therese:

It's all going through the same program/source. Don't know why one of the decks is problematic, the settings seem to be the same. We're aware of it, there's nothing that can be done at the point.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Mr. Pumpy:

Therese, this show is rocking my socks...first off, and now on, as I may hit the liquor store. Thanks!

yes Jett you are right, she'll fix it later, bigger issues to deal with now.
Avatar 7:12pm βrian:

It could be that the input device has a cold, or maybe some kind of virus?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm Scott Williams:

OK everyone take it easy. It's very likely a setting in Therese's DJ software. We're getting at the root, but today's show is a pre-record so there's nothing we can do about this one. So continued attention drawn to it is no longer helpful, and Therese already feels awful enough about it.
  7:12pm Jett:

True, @Joe B. Hope they can fix the sound issue.
  7:12pm CC:

Therese... just get your turntable out and start playing live records for the next 50 minutes!!!...:)

Saving Private Cast Iron [next from Steven Spielberg] Depending on what the pan is coated with [oxidized grease v/ plain oxidized water aka rust] you may start with vinegar and baking soda, liquefied by pouring in boiling water. Execute this step with the pan placed in a sink or tub as it may bubble up and over. Then mechanically remove grease sludge w/stainless steel version of steel wool pad and liquid detergent. Next, to remove all cleaning residue, place pan on stove and fill w/water and heat to boiling. If crud persists, repeat this step. ALL water must be boiled off prior to final step which is seasoning the pan. When pan has cooled, brush vegetable oil over inside and outside surfaces and dry excess oil w/paper towel. This pan will now outlive you and your descendants. Was introduced to the swinging swirling world of cast iron when we purchased our first skillet in 1973 at a NJ Thrift Store [now known as Consignment Shops] for the munificent sum of TEN CENTS [pan remains in use as of this moment in time]. Next up: Capellini with olive oil & garlic sauteed with panache in Therese's skillet. Bellisima! Pasquale FMU sustaining member. Thank you for your work.

baking soda is great for lifting baked on crud off of almost any cooking vessel. just a little gentle heat, and let it rest. rust can be scrubbed off later and sealed as Pasquale notes. also, check out duck duck and identify which one you lucked into. some of them are real treasures!

Cast iron- the more you use it, the better it gets
Avatar 7:42pm βrian:

I always assume a cast-iron skillet of unkonwn origins may be toxic, hence the oven cleaner.

I once found a cast-iron dutch oven in a long-abandoned hunting camp in VT. That seemed relatively safe, though it was embedded with decayed forest detritus.

love cast iron fry pan. can confirm seasoing after use is most important step. after i clean n rinse i just spray a little pan in it, heat it up on the stove top and rub it around with a paper towel after sealing it in a bit with the heat. i hang my pans so it doesnt leak that way. some keep their fry pans flat inside the stove to store them.
