The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

either kind of biking
  9:18pm Doug in Boston:

The Sonics almost sound like they're about to break into "Steppin' Out"!
Avatar 9:19pm bigplanetnoise:

Rick - how do they sound? I heard them several years ago
  9:19pm Eargasm!:

Didn't you the NC6 nailed it at the Cavestomp shows, BPN?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Gina Bacon:

coelacanthø!

  9:21pm Eargasm!:

Gary Walker did a fabulous version of this as well!
Avatar 9:21pm vanhooserd:

Peter Green did "You Don't Love Me" with John Mayall.
Avatar 9:21pm WLSClark:

With the Cornerstones show, the NC6 are backed by other folks like peterik and others to make things sound really good.
  9:21pm RickJones:

BPN.. I heard them about ten years ago at an oldies fest and they sounded great. Member Ray G leads the band. I haven't yet heard them as part of Cornerstone of Rock but on the concert dvd PBS aired, Ronnie Rce joined them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22pm Gaylord Fields:

@Joe B: I actually like the NC6's Mercury-era hit ballads, but I love love love the Centaur/Sentar stuff!
Avatar 9:22pm Mailman Tom:

A song covered by Pigpen and the Grateful Dead, back in 1966
Avatar 9:23pm WLSClark:

I sorted my 45s of Chicago groups and NC6 won. I had about 150 of their 45s--DJ imports etc.
Avatar 9:23pm bigplanetnoise:

Gaylord - I love it, too. But it's one of those things where I kinda regard them pretty much as two different bands....
  9:23pm Eargasm!:

I've always heard the Stones were not thrilled with Empty Heart and rarely played it live. Everyone else on the planet appears to disagree!
Avatar 9:23pm Kip Brown:

The Rooks for Chicago...you HAVE to check out their single on Twinight. It's a monster.
Avatar 9:24pm bigplanetnoise:

Clark - please find me the 45 of "The Time of The Year Is Sunset". PLEASE!!!!!!
Avatar 9:24pm WLSClark:

Kip, I did not know they were from Chicago! WOW!
Avatar 9:25pm Mailman Tom:

Sonny sounds like Roky Erickson here
Avatar 9:25pm prguitar:

All the Stones covers of covers..well one cover of cover and one cover..Thee Midnighters..The Rooks!!! Super!!
Avatar 9:25pm WLSClark:

Bob, I had the chance for it at $300 and didn't take it. NEVER seen before or since.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25pm Gaylord Fields:

@bpn: Sorta like Parrot-era Ides of March vs. Warner Bros. Ides of March. Must be a Chicago thing.
Avatar 9:25pm Joe B:

@Gaylord - I like a few songs also, just overdoing the snark
  9:25pm Eargasm!:

I think Mr Arf Arf may have that one, BPN!
Avatar 9:25pm prguitar:

Wish I had this whole box of singles!!
  9:26pm Jay S.:

Cryan' Shames also evolved quite a bit
Avatar 9:26pm WLSClark:

Gaylord, I don't have that problem with my Cryan Shames. They just always put out RED albums!
  9:27pm Eargasm!:

This Denise single isn't falling out of trees! $$$$$$$$
  9:27pm joedz:

Bob - Rod B was selling a copy of that NC6 for $800. Don't know if he still has it.
Avatar 9:27pm Kip Brown:

@WLS Clark..Yes, they were. The Mercury single was the first, they also did two other records, on Jo-Way and another on Twilight, the soul label.
Avatar 9:27pm WLSClark:

Wee records! That's a new one on me! Where's that from, Bob?
Avatar 9:28pm Kip Brown:

Denise went on to be in the Ace Of Cups.
Avatar 9:28pm WR:

Hi drummer Planeteers, listening but fatigued, so won't try to keep up with the comments.
Avatar 9:28pm WLSClark:

Kip, I think I have the mercury one, but will have to start a search!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm coelacanth∅:

Denise at the end there reminded me of Judy Henske
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Gaylord Fields:

It's such an unusual phenomenon that there were all these Chicago bands that were basically Beatles big at home but rarely if ever charted nationally. Probably due to the power of WLS.
  9:29pm CC:

Let's all not forget to be responsible and remember the virus hasn't gone away!!!
Avatar 9:30pm Snayle:

Bingo Gaylord...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm coelacanth∅:

i got that Gina
Avatar 9:31pm Julie P.:

Gaylord, I lived in Lexington, KY for six years in the Sixties and I could get WLS on the radio. I discovered so much amazing music that way - and when we moved to Florida, most people had never heard it!
Avatar 9:31pm WLSClark:

Gaylord, esp Exceptions. TALENT galore and popular in Chicago but no sales.
Avatar 9:31pm vanhooserd:

Mike Berniker...seen that name many times. Never thought I would know somebody that knew him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Gaylord Fields:

"Please Please Me" actually made the WLS Top 40 in early 1963.
  9:34pm Steve:

Thanks for playing Milan The Leather Boy - 'IALB' Bob & Gina my fave of his singles !
Avatar 9:35pm vanhooserd:

WLS had a weekly British Top 10 show that was great. On Sunday night, I think.
Avatar 9:35pm WLSClark:

Gaylord, Del's version of "From me to You" was a hit on WLS 63 too.
Avatar 9:36pm WLSClark:

van, indeed Ron Riley did his "Preview" show at 7 featuring new singles and then "British Billboard" at 8. Heard SOOOOO many great Brit tunes that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Gina Bacon:

Hi Steve! You're very welcome!
Avatar 9:37pm WLSClark:

SUMMER 66--gotta get away!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Gina Bacon:

Good, coelacanthø!

Avatar 9:37pm bigplanetnoise:

Hey Steve! Glad you dug it!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Gina Bacon:

Hey, Rod!
  9:37pm CC:

Georgie!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Gina Bacon:

I love these horns!!!
Avatar 9:38pm vanhooserd:

You heard songs that would soon be hits here & others you never got to hear in the States.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Gaylord Fields:

I gotta dive into some WLS airchecks (like Dick Biondi) once I exhaust my current obsessions: Dan Ingram/WABC and The Real Don Steele/KHJ. How's Tina Delgado doing these days?
Avatar 9:38pm bigplanetnoise:

David - Mike Berniker was a GREAT friend. We used to hang all the time - he was still VERY active at CBS when I first got there. Fantastic guy - I'd have laugh-face within minutes of talking with him, each and every time!!!
  9:38pm Eargasm!:

I'm thinking California on Sonny as well, Bob. The flip is the track used by Jerry Raye on Deville
  9:39pm RickJones:

I bought this Georgie Fame album GET AWAY in a cutout bin in the 70s. All I knew of him at the time was his Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde. My ears were sure opened !
Avatar 9:39pm WLSClark:

gaylord, some great choices indeed. Try Big Jack Armstrong too!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Gaylord Fields:

Thanks for verifying, WLSClark!
Avatar 9:43pm Rod:

Yes, Julie London was one of the greats! None of the modern Kralls, etc. can quite capture what she did.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Gaylord Fields:

The one Haydock's Rockhouse song I know, "She Thinks," is, well, I already used "slaps," so instead I'll say it's "fire."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Matt Clarke:

Hi Unc!
  10:12pm Steve:

Isn't it strange that Pretty Things original drummer, Viv Prince outlived Phil May ?
  10:13pm CC:

I don't know if I ever mentioned it but the Black Crowes always reminded me of a cross between Rod Stewart's faces and Humble Pie???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Gina Bacon:

That's true. prguitar. And always a bit bluesy.
Avatar 10:14pm bigplanetnoise:

I should clarify that what I meant is that the EP version of the Pretties sounds different to me than the LP cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Gaylord Fields:

Speaking of Beethoven, now that I'm finally free of mortgage responsibilities after a couple of decades, I treated myself to a 45 that's been on my want list for as long as I've had that mortgage. Namely, the Baytovens' one and only single, off which I played the sublime, Beatlesque "Waiting for You" on my show last night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm coelacanth∅:

WLSC right with the spooky orchestration!
Avatar 10:15pm bigplanetnoise:

David - I bought that Stones album, too. My first Stones LP for decades. I think I was hanging out with Eargasm and Gina when I wandered into Grimey's and bought it.
Avatar 10:15pm Julie P.:

I have that Prettys cut on a 2002 CD compilation of their singles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Gina Bacon:

Congratulations, Gaylord!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Uncle Michael:

That was a cool record, Gaylord.
  10:15pm Steve:

What are the differences between the PT E.P. and L.P. versions, Bob ? I'm not familiar ?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Gaylord Fields:

Thanks! Wait till I break it to the missus I'll be spending the equivalent of a month's mortgage on records every month.
Avatar 10:17pm bigplanetnoise:

I enjoyed that Beatleish set that you played last night Gaylord...most excellent!!!
Avatar 10:19pm WLSClark:

Gaylord, careful. I paid mine off in 93 and now it is full of records!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Gaylord Fields:

@joedz: No sleeve, but I got it very, very cheap, especially for its condition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Uncle Michael:

Get a bigger house.
Avatar 10:20pm WLSClark:

Bob, I'll have to check scheds!
Avatar 10:20pm petersando:

Bob- Don't make my head any bigger!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Gaylord Fields:

@WLSClark: Exactly. I didn't mean I'd sell the first house. The second house would be just for records.
  10:20pm Tim from LH:

Gaylord congrats! It’s a great feeling isn’t it ? I hit that milestone 2 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Uncle Michael:

Are you in Chicago, Clark?
Avatar 10:20pm bigplanetnoise:

Peter - Hahahahahaha!!!
  10:20pm joedz:

re: Chris and Craig
One of the highlights (for me) of that "Book A Trip" Capitol Records singles comp. Didn't know of it previous to that.
Avatar 10:25pm bigplanetnoise:

Steve - just saw your comment - I honestly do not know - I have very little to do with Sundazed things these days! 31 years of hundred-hour workweeks was enough! Very thankful for what we did, and now very thankful to be able to this!!!!
Avatar 10:26pm bigplanetnoise:

Hey Mike Sin!!!! Did they include both sides on that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Uncle Michael:

Clark, you know that my show name is Nebraskan?
Avatar 10:26pm WLSClark:

Mike, I helped out with that "Book a Trip" Cd and was great to get Exceptions on there.
  10:27pm Steve:

I didn't know you no longer headed Sundazed, Bob ?! I can understand where you're coming from.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm Gaylord Fields:

Matt, I predict you will love "Waiting for You"!
Avatar 10:27pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

@10:22 bigplanetnoise: also related (but yet not) to Chris Ducey of Penny Arkade/Chris&Craig, thanks for that Chris Lucey/Bobby Jameson track last week - you got me rather excited so I sought that one and the Color Him In album for more listening- love them, not to mention hours spent wisely with his blog & awesome youtube channel (lotsa rarities there, I hope it does not get taken down ever, since he is no longer with us as many of you might know)
Avatar 10:27pm WLSClark:

Steve, that is news to me too! Bob, are you retired now?
  10:28pm RickJones:

BOB, I thought you were still with Sundazed also. Who runs it now?
Avatar 10:28pm bigplanetnoise:

Steve & Clark - I handed over the reigns late last summer. I am still consulting for now.
Avatar 10:28pm WLSClark:

Uncle, is your show Monday afternoons? I may have heard part of it awhile back, but never knew it was "Nebraskan". COOL!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Uncle Michael:

No, Fridays at Noon Eastern...Hinky Dinky Time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Mike Sin:

@BPN -- No, on the second volume was an unreleased track, IIRC. I have "Isha" on some other comp that I can't remember off the top of my head.
Avatar 10:29pm WLSClark:

Bob, no more mastering for them? THAT is a shame.
Avatar 10:29pm Julie P.:

I hear precursors of more than one Monkees track in this Raves song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm coelacanth∅:

  10:37pm Steve:

Is this Tim Hardin recording of Don't Make Promises before or after The Beau Brummels' version ? I only know theirs

Tim Hardin has always been near and dear to my heart. Have a nice little collection of his 45s. Interesting how Bobby Darin and he covered each other's songs.
Avatar 10:39pm bigplanetnoise:

Steve - Tim was first - he wrote it, of course. I'm glad you guys liked it. MORE TIM HARDIN every week!!!!!

Finally, sitar!

I always think about Tim Buckley when I think about Tim Hardin... I love his son's version of Hallelujah!!!
  10:40pm Eargasm!:

I love Tim Hardin's work as well. His first album is brilliant. I think Barry Tashian mentions in his book how he turned John Lennon onto it during the tour

@10:49 Eargasm!: crap, I just remembered in 1995 I was a stupid 19-year old who DID NOT buy a 60s original of You're A Big Boy Now OST for a very reasonable price not to mention in very good condition. Sadly corona virus gave the final blow to the great record store in question. R.I.P. Fennica Records (Helsinki, Finland 2.9.1978-18.4.2020)

Maybe that's part of why Todd went solo for awhile. ;)
Avatar 11:05pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

@11:01 Gina Bacon: no, it was not my local - that in fact was the only time I ever went there (I was always poor in my teens/20s) but it is common knowledge Fennica was such a legendary shop for this sort of music & other things. Many a good record I did not buy on that sole visit, too many of them, too little money
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm Gina Bacon:

  11:20pm Steve:

Monkees!
  11:20pm RickJones:

Julie, I saw him first in 1976 with Utopia, then in mid 90s in a parking lot in Hobart, Indiana at a Hobart Jaycees fest where I WAS IN FRONT ROW!! Then three years ago at Chicago's Park West where I WON 2 tickets, so my son went with me as he had never seen him.

Avatar 11:21pm bigplanetnoise:

Doug - man, me too.
Avatar 11:21pm Julie P.:

Avatar 11:22pm bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm doctorjazz:

I go for both studio and live Dead. Sometimes the fun in live sets is hearing them screw up., then put it back together. Brave souls...
  11:23pm Steve:

Doug, that was in the era when local radio stations and indie movie theaters showed rare music movies
Avatar 11:23pm Julie P.:

Rick, that Utopia tour with the pyramid was my first tour as well. A real mind-blower!
Avatar 11:23pm Franco Twinkie:

They use to show Head late at night on broadcast TV in the 1970's. I would stay up just to see Frank Zappa walking a cow, then go to bed.
