Love those reel to reel machines! Makes my engineer's heart happy. Anyone know what model they are?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Brian in UK:

Irene, I remember my Dad bought one and I used to play at overdubbing with an echo. Cannot recall the make.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am thedunkel:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

Happy to see you, thedunkel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

@Irene Trudel
Don't you miss editing tape with a razor and grease pencil? So much more satisfying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am doctorjazz:

Love This Poppy Field (I'm a sucker for finger style acoustic guitar, though I'm not sure that's what's going on, two guitars likely)
Avatar 9:44am TDK60:

Brian, we had one when I was a child. Can't recall the make. We were doing oddball stuff with speed/etc., didn't realize we were "experimental." Wish I'd kept at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

The lead vocal here sounds like beloved Mike Cooper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am melinda:

My dad had a reel-to-reel as well, reminds me of the old days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Irene Trudel:

Yes and no, @Doug. There's something satisfying about manipulating the physical tape. What I don't miss is cutting a lot of tape and dropping the one piece you really need by accident into the pile. These days I actually prefer digital editing and its many levels of un-do when you make a mistake. Fun fact-- when WNYC moved operations to its current (all-digital) facility, John Schaefer was the last person to give up physical tape editing, and only under heavy protest.
  9:48am bigplanetnoise:

Good morning, Sir D and Drummerkids! Happy, Happy Day After, Doug!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Irene Trudel:

I do still have two reel to reel decks, one of them the Otari MX5050. It still works, although I haven't used it in years.
Avatar 9:50am StringOFperils:

Wow. Those Otari machines were really beautiful.
Avatar 9:50am TDK60:

Irene, you want to sell one if it works? (If one can still /get/ tapes.)
  9:52am Martinibomb:

I've got an old akai reel to reel that must be built out of lead cause it's super heavy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

I stand with John Schaefer, Irene!

Speaking of outstanding. Ladies and gentlemen, bigplanetnoise is here!
Avatar 9:53am TDK60:

This B. Brown is interesting. I see that's Richie Havens' subsidiary label right? Stormy Forest.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

???MYSTERY OF THE WEEK???

Can anyone identifying the owner of the hand in today's playlist animation? I'll give you a hint, it's a she.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am doctorjazz:

I'd bee interested in a reel to reel myself, though I think my wife would divorce me ("you're going to start collecting those things too!?!?). An old friend had 1 in a nice audio system, and the sound was quite nice (though the hiss seemed even worse than vinyl noise)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Irene Trudel:

@TDK60, nope! I have lots of things on reel, including a couple of shows dating back to shows I did on my high school radio station. I also have a few DAT tape machines, only one of which still works. But maybe it's time for me to start that big archiving project I've always wanted to do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

@TDK60
Right you are!
  9:54am Martinibomb:

It's Delia Derbyshire
Avatar 9:54am TDK60:

I could see that it was a 'she' Doug. And they appear to be counting to 5.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Listener Bob in PGH:

Irene, I used to have an Otari MX5050 too! What a beautiful machine, so elegant and well made. It made my Tascam unit seem so barbaric and crude.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am doctorjazz:

So glad John Schaffer is still at NYC...seemed rock and go for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Doug Schulkind:

Martinibomb wins the Kewpie Doll!!!
Avatar 9:55am StringOFperils:

@mBomb...I used to have a big AKAI machine as well, sold it, post-art school, out of poverty-driven necessity, which I still regret. The bottom end of the audio spectrum that thing could produce at 15 i.p.s. was phenomenal. I remember taping a Bobby Blue Bland CD onto that, and it sounded like a studio master tape.
Avatar 9:56am TDK60:

Can one still get reel tapes? Online maybe?
  9:56am Martinibomb:

^ I'm in love with Delia so... I'd know her lovely tape editing hands anywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am melinda:

I dig the folky music too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Irene Trudel:

I was lucky enough to have Bob Brown play live on my show in 2016: wfmu.org...
  9:58am Martinibomb:

@string I inherited mine from an uncle with a box of reels that he recorded himself doing math problems on???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

What's not to love, Martinibomb?!

@Irene Trudel
You beat me to it!
Avatar 9:58am TDK60:

In '71 I taped a live session of Procol Harum from a NYC radio station, WPLJ? It sounded great. Gone.
  9:58am Martinibomb:

Oh hey! @Irene I happened to do this live remote last year and was interviewing someone and it turned out they had been on your show like back in 2006 or something.. trying to remember the name of the artist..
  10:00am Martinibomb:

just can't remember their name right now.. hopefully it comes to me later
Avatar 10:00am StringOFperils:

I was going to guess that the GIF was from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop as well, but, as with most things, you folks beat me to it !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am melinda:

I don't remember the Bob Brown live set but apparently I like him then, too, based on comments section. FMU archives are amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Irene Trudel:

@doctorjazz, I work with John on a regular basis. Used to be daily as his live music engineer. Now I edit podcasts for him of older Soundcheck studio sessions and of new sessions on Zoom (which require a bit of Pro Tools magic to fix sometimes). Last October Schaefer's New Sounds was cancelled briefly, which the new CEO undid shortly after she started.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Gina Bacon:

Hooray!! Thanks, Doug! It'll be fun, we promise!!
  10:04am bigplanetnoise:

Can’t wait! Thx, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Irene Trudel:

@TDK60, I taped a Procol Harum concert of WNEW-FM in I think 1973. I excitedly brought it into my high school radio station and one of the idiot guys hanging on there grabbed it from me and buzzed it with the tape eraser. I was not happy.
Avatar 10:07am TDK60:

..just looked, that '71 Procol H. gig audio is found on Youtube.
Avatar 10:09am Linda Lee:

have we figured out yet how to send a 10" Pharoah Sanders master reel backward & get back to 1981?
no?
Avatar 10:09am Listener Gregory:

Today I will not try to spell "Pharaoh."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Irene Trudel:

@TDK60, that's good to know. Maybe that 1973 concert is up as well. Glad I got to see the current Procol Harum with Gary Brooker last year at City Winery in NYC. They still rocked! As for reel and other types of tape, there may be a European company still making tape but I think it's pretty scarce.
Avatar 10:09am Linda Lee:

where's that invite list, anyway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Doug Schulkind:

@StringOFperils
You win a Kewpie Doll, too. Stop by the stage door after the show.
Avatar 10:10am TDK60:

Thanks for the Pharoah, helping to heal the inner turmoil....
Avatar 10:11am StringOFperils:

Pharoah and Procol Harum are easy to misspell if you're not paying attention....ah, attention, focus, memory....it was all once bright jewels, and glittering sand....
Avatar 10:12am Linda Lee:

even if we overshoot by 10 years & we wind up at the Procol Harem gig, i'd find that acceptable. wouldn't you?
Avatar 10:15am Linda Lee:

kids, in case you're not aware: there was something called 'privacy' then. also, 'solitude'. we also kissed in public! i do not lie. look it up!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

Leader of the Free World, Dave Sewelson!!

Glad you rambled by, Ray!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am doctorjazz:

@Irene, I know about the plan to drop John Schaffer, I'm a member, and we were emailed about the plan. I get the sense the new manager got much flack and negative feedback about it, and that had to backtrack on canceling (I was one, probably of many, who sent an email threatening to cancel my membership over it. I later got a thank you email from John, which is why I think that had to do with the cancellation being cancelled).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am chresti:

Good morning to birthday bwoy Doug and drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

As that Art Blakey track with Yusef Lateef was playing, a post came across my Facebook feed from Yusef's wife. We exchanged comments just now. There are no coincidenes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Doug Schulkind:

Woop woop, chesti! Grab some cake! (Well, we had pecan pie. But grab a chunk!)
Avatar 10:32am TDK60:

Morning Chresti. Do you work today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Irene Trudel:

@doctorjazz, your email contributed to the decision to undo New Sounds' cancellation, which generally NEVER happens in radio. Thank you!
Avatar 10:34am Sem:

Good morning, Doug, and greets, Drummer Summers, all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Irene Trudel:

Speaking of Schaefer, I gotta go edit a session. Nice listening and chatting with you all this morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am chresti:

Morning TDK60, no work today, it's my "Saturday" today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

The reversal on the decision to can John Schaffer was as shocking as it was thrilling.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am doctorjazz:

@Irene, I was glad (and frankly, shocked) that it made any difference. I've enjoyed John's presence on NYC, from back in the days of his live Soundcheck afternoon show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

Cheers, Irene!

Welcome aboard, lucyinbklyn!!!

Hello and howdy, wendy del formaggio!!!
  10:39am rw:

Good morning! Doug's Birthday?? Happy belated Birthday Mr. Schulkind!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

As WR departs, rw arrives. IT'S MAGIC!

Like a conceptual palindrome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

My all-time favorite palindrome (simple, but affective): Sit on a potato pan, Otis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am doctorjazz:

Angela's Angel is indeed angelic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

The bass line here gives me chills. So proud and propelling. Two men are behind it: Cecil McBee and Charlie Haden.
  10:49am wendy del formaggio:

Doug, that’s my favorite palindrome, too. And I learned it right around the time I made the online / email acquaintance of Otis Fodder of The Bran Flakes, so it seemed mystical somehow. Haha.

The trumpeter here is Ray Copeland. (Brooklyn boyhood friend of Randy Weston.) I'd bet anything a clear through line can be drawn from Rex Stewart to Ray Copeland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
You will want to go back and check this set from the start. Better yet, let me just do it again.

Avatar 11:07am TDK60:

They loved it. An African American friend. As I dimly recall, he went as part of some project, may have gotten a grant to help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Uncle Michael:

  11:19am wendy del formaggio:

@Jeff Golick: WOW. That’s one hell of a palindrome! I love how the best ones are about food. Potato, salami, lasagna...
Avatar 11:19am TDK60:

Does it matter if one says either, there are no coincidences, or, there are a /lot/ of coincidences? (Asking for a postmodern philosopher I know...)_
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Uncle Michael:

If you wanna, you can join me for Hinky Dinky Time at the top of the hour. No pressure.
