Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm mariano:

Hey TOPT, crew, everyone! Nice to hear some AC/DC. I hadn't heard them in a long time till about a year or so ago at the Dungeon in the French Quarter. It has this legendary sound system and jukebox (mainly extreme metal but also foundational hard rock), and "Walk All Over You" came on. Hadn't heard it at the proper volume in ages, absolutely blew me away.
Avatar 3:16pm TDK60:

Thanks David, will keep an eye out for the postal worker!

I saw J Geils open for the Rolling Stones in London in the early 80's. They blew the Stones away.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm Mr. Pumpy:

@TDK...good to hear! I know how frustrating and nerve rattling that bullshit can be. Good news!
  3:33pm kpx:

Wait, V Tom. Tecate, would you recommend that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm McGroovey:

I've never heard Rick Springfield sound so heavy, but then again, I haven't listened to many Rick Springfield records.
  3:34pm David in London:

Did Rick Springfield suddenly join Mudhoney? Sheesh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm efd:

I am both stunned and delighted to hear Rick Springfield covering this and furious that I didn’t already know about it!

  3:35pm Victrola Tom:

Les and I saw Rick perform this track live at the Count Basie many moons ago!
Avatar 3:36pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Frank In Queens: The hilarious thing is last night I told Cheryl that you are ridiculously muscular!
  3:36pm Jett:

I like those real early Rick Springfield recordings. Not much on his later stuff.
  3:36pm Victrola Tom:

@kpx Tecate is a great backyard basking in the sun beer! But drink it straight up, line a man! No fruit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm efd:

Pre-General Hospital Rick Springfield made some great pop records, with some Elton John sidemen in his band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm Frank In Queens:

I think you have me confused with someone else Todd!
  3:38pm kpx:

@Medson, I think I heard of a IPA called fat tire. or was that ale?. have you heard of it?.
  3:39pm MFlynn:

Todd, Is this new Jordan Jones?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:40pm Ciggy:

@GeorgeSimian ~ the Stones probably played 45 minutes.
  3:40pm Andy:

Hi, did I just hear a Bear Show reference in that “Text You Back” song?
  3:40pm Andy:

*Best Show
  3:40pm battleaxe:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46pm Stanley:

Hi David - on closer inspection, it's a collaboration with Mondo in London. Picked it up today from The Beerhive (curbside collection). Tell him to give them a call.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm mariano:

That's at least three Who songs about masturbation: this one, Pictures of Lily, and How Can You Do It Alone. Not complaining, just observing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Mr. Pumpy:

@kpx, Fat Tire is an amber ale from New Belgium Brewing Company. They are from Colorado but have been shipping to the east coast for a year or so. The IPA they offer is called Voodoo Ranger.
  3:48pm David in London:

Boss Groover, sure you saw the news that Phil May has died. Massively bad news. Yet again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Mr. Pumpy:

Such a killer Who tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Stanley:

However, there is The Bottle Barron, where he lives. Also a fine purveyor of ales.
Avatar 3:49pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@mariano: It was all hands on deck for The Who.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm mariano:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm mariano:

TOPT: <Keith_Moon_rimshot.wav> ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:50pm GeorgeSimian:

@Ciggy No. They played a huge set. Wembley Stadium. And they were good. But J. Geils were amazing. I think the Tattoo You tour, which was not the same as the Exile on Main St. tour. They were probably in their 40s, and all the papers said they were so old and how could they keep going. And now I'm older than they were, and I'm old, but I'm not that old.
Avatar 3:50pm The Big G:

Gotta “hand” it to The Who. They knew a lot about self satisfaction
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Frank In Queens:

Saw the Tattoo you tour in Buffalo NY.Stones were fantastic, George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers opened for them, he was off the charts spectacular. Stones were in awe of him , asking him for his autograph after the snow. Pics of it in Hampton Va.
  3:55pm kpx:

Love the Byrds also, keep 'em flyin' high.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Mr. Pumpy:

David, I was thinking along the same lines when that Springfield song played. It was like he was channeling Fu Manchu or something. Seems to be a Big Muff, Fuzz Face or the like going on there.
  3:56pm David in London:

Mariano, just after the millennium I saw them do SF Sorrow live, and it was absolutely amazing. With Arthur Brown as the narrator. Quite an evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Mr. Pumpy:

@kpx, the Fat Tire is good stuff. Better than their IPA, to these taste buds.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm McGroovey:

The Byrds are probably the best of the post-New Christy Minstrels bands. If they hadn't lost Gene Clark, they would have been big.

The Groovies gained a lot of traction around here!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Ciggy:

@GeorgeSimian ~ Don't get me wrong, the Stones were my favorite band, but a major disappointment seeing them live @ The Palladium in the late 70s. I won a lottery through WNEW-FM. It was a hot summer afternoon navigating from secret locations to get four tickets. Peter Tosh opened for the Stones. He was excellent. But the Stones mailed it in. They played maybe a dozen songs. They got a great review in the NY Times.
  4:03pm Jett:

I'm a big Waylon guy also! You are kickin' butt. This whole album is really great.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm GeorgeSimian:

@ciggy I love the Stones too. Third World was the first opening band, btw. And they were pretty great too. I saw Peter Tosh once and he was amazing. The Stones just weren't that good. I saw The Who in 80 at Wembley Arena - which is indoors - and I had 2nd row seats. I think I was only 13, but that was an amazing show.
  4:08pm battleaxe:

"Listenin' to Todd...heads beginning to nod!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm McGroovey:

I just listened to "Try" last night on the u-tube. It has a sort of digitally-augmented sound, to my ears. Not in any horrible way. Just an observation. Or maybe it's just because it was on EweToob. I'm looking forward to the release of the whole album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm Stanley:

At the end of this song, you still don't know he actually got Memphis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm McGroovey:

I love Solomon Burke's "That's How I Got To Memphis". I was just thinking about that as Solomon Burke's name came up in Michael Shelley's interview a little while ago.

@GeorgeSimian ~ I 1st saw The Who @ MSG during their Quadrophenia tour. Golden Earing opened. Fantastic. One time my boss called me into work (John Wanamaker's) but I had Who tickets. He said not tonight, Keith Moon is in the hospital. Moon came back with thunder a few nights later. The Best show ever.

Have you ever played The Quitters? Great Rochester band. One of many (really, many) great local bands I used to see all the time when I lived in Rochester. One member spent some time in the Fox Sisters later. The Quitters were hot. They could easily have succeeded beyond Rochester. There are lots of great obscure local bands like that everywhere, but a lot of them have been from Rochester.

I wish I could embrace the obvious cinematic and comedic genius of The General, but that whole Confederate angle is kind of hard for me to get past.
  5:18pm Jett:

Another big favorite is this Runt single. Cool!
Avatar 5:18pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@JohnEBGood: I'm not sure if he was singing about them per se, but I definitely think he was at least paying tribute to them....kinda like the K West sign on the cover of Ziggy.

  5:24pm franz:

How comes there is not a real good documentary about beach boys?!
something that Scorsese could do, there are documentaries about ANYTHING right now, but not a proper one for one lf the best bands ever (and a great and complicated story too)
Avatar 5:25pm JakeGould:

Was Phil Spector ever happy? Did he ever experience any joy?
Avatar 5:25pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Franz: Did you see Love & Mercy? The non-documentary version of Brian's life?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm McGroovey:

Holland and my post-sixties Pretty Things records: On my list to pull out and listen to tonight after Greg C is done spinning. "Savage Eye" and "Cross Talk" also have their moments. Cross Talk (1980) is definitely informed by the power pop and post-pub rock of the time (Graham Parker, Nick Lowe, etc).
Avatar 5:26pm The Big G:

Gaylord: I totally understand the reluctance. I guess I always overlooked it because he was making fun of the confederacy
  5:26pm franz:

Im actually in front of the original poster of the movie, framed and signed by the author! I LOVE IT!!!! beautiful biopic
  5:27pm David in London:

Joe B, yeah, him and Van Dyke both...
Avatar 5:27pm Joe B:

Franz, guessing mike love and probably also Brian's current wife would want editorial control, or at least some veto power
  5:29pm franz:

Wish i could post a photo of it because it's beautiful actually. I normally dont buy ailkscreen posters for that much but well...
Anyway, talking a biopic, anyone remembers the other Beach Boys biopic about the band, a sort of two-part tv serie with actors and everything...maybe on ABC network? That one somehow was always showed on italian TV (dubbed, as we always do)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm Gaylord Fields:

@The Big G: Fair enough. I just wanna find a way into the movie instead of my default of seeing it more like a Hogan’s Heroes where the Germans prevail every week.
  5:30pm Ira:

@JakeGould: I was at a Knicks game years ago and they showed an appropriately blase Paul Shaffer on the jumbotron. He was there with Phil Spector, who seemed extremely joyful, pointing at the screen.
Avatar 5:31pm Joe B:

@Franz yes! summer dreams: the story of the beach boys!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm McGroovey:

Yeah, I never jump up and make a fuss when I come on the jumbotron, either.
Avatar 5:32pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Ira: Well in the same documentary Joe is referring to, Phil did say he get his latter hairstyle from Ben Wallace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm Gaylord Fields:

@Ira: So your point is that Phil Spector derives joy from watching basketball played poorly.
Avatar 5:32pm Photocopy Cha Cha:

@5:29 franz: never dared to watch it, even if I might have it on a hard drive
  5:32pm franz:

I actually enjoyed it a lot. And Why when I say this I do feel a little guilty?!
Avatar 5:32pm Joe B:

or maybe it was The Beach Boys: An American Family. that might have been it
Avatar 5:33pm Joe B:

would not have predicted a Ben Wallace mention on the comment board for today!
  5:33pm franz:

Exactly!
And to make it even more confusing, there is another documentary called Beach Boys: and american BAND
Avatar 5:34pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

This comment board takes after Johnny Rodz!
Avatar 5:36pm Hackensack Slim:

@Gaylord/Ira In that Agony & Ecstasy documentary Phil was practically giddy recounting driving Brian Wilson bananas trying to figure out "Wall of Sound" logistics.
Avatar 5:36pm The Big G:

McGroovey: I just acquired “Freeway Madness” a couple months ago but haven’t really listened much yet. I’m gonna give it a spin tomorrow
Avatar 5:37pm Joe B:

@Todd - thanks for the opening to mention Ivan Putski
Avatar 5:37pm JakeGould:

@Ira and @Gaylord… Wow! Right when you posted that I found a clip on YouTube of Fred Willard (R.I.P.) on Letterman doing a joke about blind prostitutes with Paul Schaffer over-reacting as he usually does.

www.youtube.com...

The joke: “You know what they say about blind prostitutes… You really have to hand it to them…”

Anyway, Phil seems to derive joy from suffering… Like watching the Knicks play.
